ZANU PF Secretary for Youth Affairs, Tino Machakaire, expressed confidence that the ruling party will secure a victory in the upcoming by-election for the Glen View South National Assembly seat, set for April 12.
Machakaire made his remarks at a campaign rally organised by the ZANU PF Youth League at Chemhanza Grounds in Glen View South on Friday, March 28.
The event saw hundreds of supporters and senior party members come together to rally behind the ZANU PF candidate, Tsitsi Tawomhera.
Machakaire, who was the guest of honour, told the crowd that opposition political parties have failed the electorate and that ZANU PF is the party capable of righting those wrongs. Said Machakaire:

The opposition led councillors have failed to deliver for the people who voted them into office, especially those in urban areas. In Glen View South, sewage is gushing on people’s door steps, which is a health time bomb to the people. Only ZANU PF will end all the challenges for the people.
We cannot afford to lose the seat if we have proper structures in the constituency. With the level of development which is being carried across the country by the Government under the leadership of President Mnangagwa, the electorate will vote for ZANU PF.
The Government is currently working on rehabilitating roads in the area, capacitating youth with ICT skills, and drilling boreholes to ensure access to clean water for residents.

Tawomhera will face stiff competition from four other candidates: Perpetua Mukanda from the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA), as well as independent candidates Chakeredza Tonderai, Tungamirai Madzokere, and George Makwangwaidze.
The Glen View South seat became vacant following the passing of Gladymore Hakata, a member of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party.
The CCC has opted not to nominate a candidate for the by-election due to an ongoing struggle for control within the party between Sengezo Tshabangu and Welshman Ncube, leaving uncertainty over who is actually in charge.

ZANU PF Confident Of Victory In Glen View South By-Election

MDC president Douglas Mwonzora has said President Emmerson Mnangagwa has no legal pathway to extend his term beyond 2028 unless he declares a state of emergency.
Mwonzora, who co-chaired the Constitutional Parliamentary Committee (COPAC) responsible for drafting Zimbabwe’s 2013 Constitution, which replaced the Lancaster House Constitution of 1979, dismissed recent attempts by ZANU PF-aligned legislators to push for term limit extensions through parliamentary motions, calling them legally invalid.
He asserted that any such amendment would require a national referendum, a step ZANU PF is keen to avoid.
Speaking at a press conference in Bulawayo, Mwonzora pointed out that Section 328 of the Constitution explicitly prohibits incumbents from extending their terms without a referendum. He said:

The constitution is very clear about what needs to be done to amend the term limit clause.
All lawyers of substance agree on that point. (Professor Lovemore) Madhuku agrees, I agree, (Professor) Welshman (Ncube) agrees, Tendai Biti agrees, (Patrick) Chinamasa agrees.
But half-baked lawyers like Ziyambi Ziyambi will say things that do not make sense. That’s the problem with being a laboratory assistant, then studying law by correspondence and wanting to speak authoritatively on the constitution.

Mwonzora strongly criticized Justice, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi after ZANU PF officials claimed that term limits could be changed through parliamentary processes alone. Mwonzora called this a deliberate misunderstanding of the law. He said:

Ziyambi is very, very wrong. The constitution says the clause that deals with term limits must be amended in the same manner as the Bill of Rights, through a referendum.
We wrote it in convoluted language because we did not want the government at the time to notice during the drafting. Coincidentally, the drafting was done here in Bulawayo.

Mwonzora also referred to a video from ZANU PF’s National People’s Conference in Bulawayo last year, where former Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa acknowledged that extending term limits would require two referendums – one to amend the term-limit clause and another to allow Mnangagwa to benefit from the extension.
He accused Ziyambi and the pro-2030 agenda group of wanting to avoid a referendum out of fear that they would lose.
Mwonzora warned that the only constitutional way for Mnangagwa to stay in power beyond 2028 would be by declaring a state of emergency, a move that could lead to the suspension of certain democratic rights. He added:

But we were very clear in the constitution, very careful, that a state of emergency had to have a time limit, a length of time.
Maybe if they start havoc, if they start disorder themselves, and it’s not beyond them, they can start disorder and have a state of emergency, but apart from that, there is no other legal way that Mnangagwa can extend his term of office.

Mwonzora also pointed out that Mnangagwa is currently 83, and by 2028, he will be 86. If he were to secure a third term, he would be 91.
He questioned why Zimbabweans should be subjected to such leadership, adding that the country has enough capable and intelligent young people to govern its affairs, and that Zimbabweans did not ask to be ruled by “geriatrics”.

Government spokesperson Ndavaningi “Nick” Mangwana has dismissed reports that business premises owned by prominent local businessmen linked to ZANU PF were petrol-bombed by unknown assailants, calling the alleged arson attack “amateurish stunts.”
Several reports have alleged that business premises owned by figures such as Kuda Tagwirei, Wicknell Chivayo, Tino Machakaire, and John Mangudya, the former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor and current CEO of Mutapa Investment Fund, were attacked with petrol bombs shortly after midnight on Friday.
In a post on X, showing a picture of a charred car allegedly from the crime scene, Mangwana suggested that the assailants had brought an old vehicle and placed it “outside some place” before setting it on fire and fleeing the scene to create fear and confusion. Wrote Mangwana:

Wow, what a mastermind plan! They collect some clunkers, drive them to a spot outside some place, set them ablaze, and then sprint away like lunatics. And the grand strategy behind this “genius move” is… to what? Scare someone? Please. And there are actually people holding their breaths, eagerly awaiting these amateurish stunts? The fire incident occurred approximately 48 hours after war veteran Blessed Geza labelled Tagwirei and Chivayo as “criminals around the president.”

A government spokesperson named Nick Mangwana said that the alleged petrol-bombing incidents in Harare were just amateurish stunts. Some reports said that business places owned by famous people connected to ZANU PF were attacked by unknown people with petrol bombs. Mangwana posted a picture of a burnt car and said the attackers brought old cars, set them on fire, and ran away to create fear. This happened after someone called Tagwirei and Chivayo criminals around the president. Mangwana thinks the attackers did this to scare people, but he called it a silly plan.

Mangwana Dismisses Alleged Petrol-Bombing Incidents In Harare As "Amateurish Stunts"

The NewsHawks reported that a state security official dealing with the current situation, including the planned March 31 protests, said that people may be the biggest losers again in the latest round of the ZANU PF succession battle.
The official, who was not named for professional and security reasons, is quoted as saying:

This is an internal ZANU PF matter, with legitimate public interest. The question is, who benefits from these protests?
The November 2017 coup, which led to the ousting of President Robert Mugabe, was initially celebrated by many Zimbabweans who thronged the streets, seeing it as a chance for change and a break from Mugabe’s authoritarian rule and economic woes.
However, as time has shown, the coup ultimately benefited the military and the ruling elite only, with President Emmerson Mnangagwa, a former Mugabe ally, taking power.
The promised reforms and improvements in the lives of ordinary Zimbabweans have been slow to materialise, and many have been left feeling disappointed and disillusioned.
Now, with the looming protests on March 31, there are concerns that history might repeat itself, and the people might again be the losers.
The demonstrations, which are being driven by widespread discontent with the government’s handling of the economy and corruption, might provide an opportunity for the military or other opportunistic, powerful interests to exploit the situation and further entrench their power.

Geza, a former Sanyati MP and ZANU PF Central Committee member, claims that individuals close to Mnangagwa are looting the country for personal gain, while the majority of Zimbabweans continue to suffer in extreme poverty.
However, top security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed concerns to The NewsHawks about the “real motive” behind the loud calls to oust Mnangagwa.
They warned that the situation resembles the empty “Mugabe must go” slogan from the past, lacking a clear plan for what would follow or how to secure the people’s interests.
The security officials also voiced concern over the country being swept into an internal ZANU PF issue, without clarifying how such a shift would improve the living conditions and material well-being of the people. Said the official:

Who benefits from this? That question must be asked upfront, not later. Yes, Geza has tried to seize the moment and opportunity of socio-economic disgruntlement around the country to fuel and incite anger against Mnangagwa’s government, but do you think people benefit from this? Ordinary people don’t seem enthusiastic about street protests and may just stay away. 
It is because they don’t trust the process and don’t want to be used again, as happened in 2017.
While the disgruntled war veterans have gained a lot of popularity and traction with Geza’s incessant attacks, that whole cabal, fronting some wounded interests and comrades, has made some strategic blunders by revealing why they want regime change.
It is all about themselves, not the people. They are fighting for their time to eat. It might be difficult to mobilise the people for March 31. Yes, people are suffering, but they don’t want to be used. That is clear. 
The situation is made worse by the fact that people like popular opposition leader Nelson Chamisa and those within his latent structures are not involved in this.
In our assessment, based on the current situation and past experiences, Zimbabweans are not only wiser-after they were used, shortchanged and abandoned in 2017-but also contextual and discerning.

March 31 Protests: Zimbabweans Warned Against Being Exploited In ZANU PF Succession Battle

Former ZANU PF central committee member, Blessed Runesu Geza, says there is no justification for 16 million Zimbabweans to suffer at the hands of what he referred to as criminals surrounding President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
On Wednesday, 26 March 2025, Geza released a new video reiterating his calls for “an uprising” to force Mnangagwa to resign on March 31. He declared:

We want an uprising from Plumtree to Mutare, from Zambezi to Limpopo, everyone should flood the streets, Mnangagwa must go.

Geza, who is wanted by the police for allegedly inciting violence and civil unrest through his public statements, appeared in a YouTube video from an undisclosed location wearing military fatigues.
In the video, he named what he referred to as “criminals around Mnangagwa” and a second group of “political criminals.”
The first list included businessmen Wicknell Chivayo, Kudakwashe Tagwirei, Scott Sakupwanya, and Mnangagwa’s wife, Auxilia. He said:

We’re people of action, you need to buy data because you will see the action we will take about these criminals.
They’re not many in number, on the other hand it’s 16 million of us. Why should we suffer at the hands of a few?
It’s sad what’s happening, you now even hear people saying colonial rule was better. All this is being caused by these political criminals.
We’re dealing with Mnangagwa on March 31 but these criminals we’re going after them starting from now.
These people think they’re very clever, but they’re going to regret. It’s they who will in the end voluntarily go to Mnangagwa and say ‘please go now, we’re suffering’.

Geza, who claims to represent a group of war veterans, said they were “very sorry that we let you down” after years of backing the ZANU PF leadership.
Geza has urged opposition leaders to join his call for action, but questions remain about his democratic credentials.
During a ZANU PF politburo meeting in Harare on Wednesday, Mnangagwa said he had enough support from “patriotic citizens to squash efforts by malcontents and rogue, delusional elements bent on disturbing our peace, unity, and harmony.”

Opposition activist Linda Masarira has dismissed allegations that she is a “regime enabler” after suggesting that Zimbabweans should not be misled into supporting the 31 March protests called by war veteran Blessed “Bombshell” Geza.
Geza, who was recently expelled from ZANU PF, has been at the forefront of calling for mass protests to force President Emmerson Mnangagwa to resign, accusing him of corruption, nepotism, cronyism, and incompetence.
Masarira warned that the protests are not about the people’s suffering, but rather a factional battle within ZANU PF. She wrote on X:

It is unfortunate that every time someone calls for strategic thinking instead of blind reaction, they are accused of benefiting from the regime. 
Let me make this clear once again: I am not, and have never been, a regime enabler. My commitment has always been to fighting for justice, economic freedom, and a better Zimbabwe for all, not for a political party but for the people.
Being in opposition does not mean embracing chaos or supporting reckless actions that do not lead to real change. I refuse to be used as a pawn in internal ZANU-PF power struggles. 
The M31 protests are not about the people’s suffering they are a factional battle within ZANU-PF. We have seen this script before, and it does not end with freedom for Zimbabweans.

Masarira said that opposing bad governance should not mean blindly following those who manipulate genuine grievances for their own political gain. She added:

I stand with the people, and I will always fight for real solutions that bring lasting change not short-term reactions that only benefit a few individuals in political fights.
If you believe I am benefiting from the regime, show me where. My record speaks for itself. I have always stood for the people, and I will continue to do so without apology.

"March 31 Protests Have Nothing To Do With Ordinary Zimbabweans"

MDC president Douglas Mwonzora has accused Zimbabwe’s judiciary of attempting to destabilize his party after its opposition to ZANU PF’s plan to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s second and final term from 2028 to 2030.
Speaking at a press conference in Bulawayo on Sunday, Mwonzora claimed that a recent High Court ruling nullifying the MDC’s 2022 congress was a deliberate attempt to render the party leaderless and undermine its opposition to constitutional amendments that could extend Mnangagwa’s presidency.
Mwonzora also said the MDC has been at the forefront of resisting the “ED2030 agenda,” which seeks to extend Mnangagwa’s time in office. He said:

It was the MDC which held a press conference in Harare in January this year to announce its opposition to the machinations of ZANU PF in trying to give President Mnangagwa a third term.
We were then joined by other political parties, civil society organisations, the church was very strong and war veterans, who are very strong on that point.
It was not the war veterans who started the fight against the 2030 Agenda, it was the MDC. We may be saying it in different words, and agendas may also be different, but our agenda as the MDC is that we are against the desecration of our constitution.

Mwonzora claimed that the decision to nullify the MDC’s 2022 congress by High Court Judge Justice Hapias Zhou was politically motivated.
The High Court judgment cited two main reasons for nullifying the congress: MDC gave 24 days’ notice instead of the required 30 days, and the women’s congress was not concluded.
Mwonzora dismissed these reasons as minor technicalities, pointing out that the MDC has historically deferred certain aspects of its congresses without invalidating the entire process.
He added that the MDC has appealed the decision to the Supreme Court, which effectively suspends the judgment. Said Mwonzora:

Even if we had not appealed, this judgment does not affect anything. It restores the leadership as elected at the extraordinary congress, and I remain the leader. Whoever did the math did not calculate well because they left me in charge again.

Mwonzora suggested that the timing of the judgment raised suspicions of state interference. He said:

We can’t say for sure, but a series of coincidences point to the hand of the state. This judgment is very unsound and illogical.
The court case was lodged in 2022, nothing was done in 2023 and in 2024, coincidentally when we raised the issue of our opposition to the third term.
There is a direct coincidence that is strange and leads us to conclude that there is a third hand.

Mwonzora Accuses Judiciary Of Targeting MDC For Opposing ED2030 Agenda

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has retired Lieutenant General Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe from the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) and his position as Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA).
In a statement released on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, Martin Rushwaya, the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, announced that Sanyatwe’s retirement takes effect immediately.
Rushwaya also revealed that Sanyatwe has been appointed as the new Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture, with the appointment effective immediately. Said Rushwaya:

In terms of section 216 (2) (Command of Defence Forces) as read with section 340 (1) (f) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe and section 115 (Commander in Chief Prerogative) of the Defence Act [Chapter 11:02], the President, in His capacity as such and as Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces has relieved and retired, Lieutenant General Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe, from the Zimbabwe Defence Forces and as Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army with immediate effect.
And:
In terms of section 104 (3) of the Constitution, appoints Lieutenant General (Rtd) Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe as Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture with immediate effect.

This is not the first time Lieutenant General Sanyatwe has been retired from the Zimbabwe National Army. He was retired in 2019 and was appointed as Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Tanzania.
However, he was later recalled from his ambassadorial role and reappointed as the Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) following the retirement of Lieutenant General David Sigauke.
On November 12, 2018, Sanyatwe, then a Brigadier-General and Commanding Officer of the Presidential Guard, testified before the Mothlane Commission of Inquiry.
During his testimony, he denied any involvement in the August 1 killings, asserting that the soldiers under his command had not fired on the crowds.
Responding to a commissioner who had asked if any dead bodies were recovered from the area where the kneeling soldier was firing, he said:
<blockquote>
No, sir. If you watch that video closely, that soldier who took a kneeling position whilst firing; if you check properly [with] military experts, that rifle was being fired at an angle of 45 degrees in the air, and not directly at the [people].

Meanwhile, in a post on X on Saturday, social media personality LynneM claimed that a meeting was held at Precabe Farm on that day where a decision was allegedly made to remove Sanyatwe from the military and appoint him a Cabinet Minister.
She claimed that “in attendance were ED, Dr Amai Auxy, Tagwirei K, Emm-Jnr &amp; Mupostori Shumba, those in ZANUPF circles know this Mupostori Shumba.” She added:

The plan of the meeting is to use the election of Minister Kirsty Coventry to the position of IOC President as an excuse for a cabinet reshuffle that will see the removal of the Genroll Chiwenga’s loyalists from any position that has direct links to the security sector.
The target in this scenario is General Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe, who is going to be “promoted” from ZNA Commander to Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation.
Gen Sanyatwe will be replaced by Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi who worked with Tagwirei at FAZ.
Sanyatwe’s wife will be moved from Deputy Minister for Home Affairs to a ministry yet to be established.

In the past, he was made an ambassador but later returned as an army commander. There were allegations and denials about his involvement in killings. Mnangagwa Retires ZNA Commander Lieutenant General Sanyatwe, Appoints Him Sports Minister

Nelson Chamisa, the former leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has distanced himself from the planned mass protests on March 31, 2025, called by expelled ZANU PF Central Committee member, Blessed Runesu Geza.
Geza’s call for protests is in response to a push by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s loyalists to extend his second and final term from 2028 to 2030.
Last week, Geza, who is wanted by the police for alleged theft and other crimes, mentioned several opposition figures, including Chamisa, former Finance Minister Tendai Biti, and former MP Job Sikhala, claiming that they supported the protests aimed at pushing Mnangagwa out of office sooner.
In a statement made via YouTube from an undisclosed location last Tuesday, Geza suggested these opposition figures were backing the protest.
However, Chamisa clarified that while he is open to constructive dialogue with any party, he has not been involved in any discussions related to the protests or recent events. He wrote on social media:

I want to clarify that my door is always open to speak with anyone who reaches out to me for constructive conversations and nation building, but I have not been involved in recent dialogues with anyone. I do not want to be made the focal point of things that have nothing to do with me.

Geza, a former intelligence operative, claimed that some prominent opposition politicians support Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s potential bid to succeed Mnangagwa. He said:

We have spoken with all political players. The likes of Chamisa, Sikhala, Biti, Komichi and Mwonzora. We did not leave anyone behind. We have agreed on the way forward. And among all these people, no one does not like Chiwenga.

A leaked memo from the President’s Department, dated 19 March 2025, instructed regional immigration officers, including those at the Plumtree, Maitengwe, and Mphoengs border posts, to prevent Mathibela from exiting the country. It reads:

The war veterans questioned the legitimacy of Youth Connect, accusing them of disrupting their event on behalf of the state. Said Magwizi:

Mathibela warned the youths that their actions could have serious consequences. He said:

Speaking at the Manicaland Provincial Co-ordinating Committee meeting in Mutare on Sunday, 16 March, Chinamasa said consultations will be held with key stakeholders, including the Politburo and Central Committee, to determine the best approach for amending the Constitution.
He said that if the proposal is approved, the party will direct the Government to initiate the constitutional amendment through Parliament. Said Chinamasa:

Let me address you regarding Resolution Number One, adopted at the national conference in Bulawayo last year. Those present will recall my statement that the President intended to remain in office until 2028, a stance he has since reiterated recently.
The question now arises — why do we wish to extend his term until 2030? Our rationale is that his leadership has been beneficial for the country, and we desire him to complete the developmental initiatives he has undertaken.
If we unite and speak with one voice, his acceptance will be in our favour. The party has tasked me as the Secretary for Legal Affairs with implementing this resolution.
I will consult stakeholders to determine the best approach, which involves amending the national Constitution.
Once we have a clear plan, including consultations with the Politburo and Central Committee, and if the Central Committee approves, we will instruct the Government to amend the Constitution through Parliament.
As for the President’s decision, do not concern yourselves with whether he accepts or declines. That is his prerogative.
If the resolution is passed and the Constitution is amended, it will be up to him to decide. We will not be involved, and I doubt he will consult us. If he does, we will be fortunate.

Speaking at a Special Provincial Coordinating Committee meeting in Chinhoyi, Ziyambi warned that the law would take firm action against the spread of inciteful and violent messages. He said:

It is irresponsible for any journalist to foster panic and uncertainty.
The law will act decisively against the broadcasting of incitement and violent messages.
This kind of behaviour is not only dangerous but also poses a threat to our nation’s stability and economic progress.

Mhlanga was arrested on February 24, 2025, after voluntarily surrendering to the police. His arrest followed allegations of inciting public violence through broadcasts on HSTV, where he interviewed political figures critical of the government, including Blessed Geza, a war veteran and outspoken critic of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

ZANU PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa has been secretly recorded criticising the party’s Second Secretary and Vice President, Constantino Chiwenga.
In the secret recording, Mutsvangwa launches a blistering attack on Chiwenga, labelling him a “cruel, unelectable, and uneducated leader” who struggles to distinguish between the letters “R” and “L”.
The explosive audio, obtained by UK-based investigative unit Dug Up, offers a rare glimpse into the escalating factional battles within ZANU PF, pitting President Emmerson Mnangagwa against his deputy Chiwenga.
According to Mutsvangwa, the rift between Mnangagwa and Chiwenga centres on the upcoming ZANU PF elective congress, where Chiwenga is reportedly resistant to facing a challenge for the top party post. 
Chiwenga allegedly wants to be endorsed as the party’s First Secretary and presidential candidate, while Mnangagwa is pushing for a more democratic process, allowing other candidates to contest the leadership position.
This power struggle is set against the backdrop of Mnangagwa’s constitutional term limit, which expires in 2028. 
Despite a 2024 party resolution to extend his tenure, Mnangagwa has publicly stated that he will not seek to remain in power beyond the constitutional limit. Said Mutsvangwa:

For over three years, Mubaiwa has been entangled in a protracted legal battle, with her passport held by the courts. This has denied her the opportunity to undergo life-saving treatment abroad. She has also been denied access to her children with Chiwenga. Said Mutsvangwa:

Can you imagine, half of the electorate are women in this country and you have decapitated the limbs of your former wife through cruelty and you are refusing her to see the children, including the ones she came to you with.
When Number One tries to pardon her, you refuse. He reeks of cruelty against all women in the country, he cannot win so he does not want elections, but the president has upended him and told him to sell himself to the electorate.

Notwithstanding Chiwenga’s claim to hold a PhD in Ethics from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, Mutsvangwa asserts that the former army general is, in fact, functionally illiterate. He said:

The letter R comes from the mother, the L comes from a teacher, that is the basic litmus test of an illiterate Shona person.
He never managed to graduate from the mother’s alphabet. Going to war is no substitute for illiteracy and ignorance, we went to war from universities.

Addressing a special State of the Party meeting at the ZANU PF headquarters in Harare on Thursday, March 13, Muchinguri-Kashiri said that the resolution should not be exploited to stir up discord or justify petty disciplinary She said:

Allow me to put the 21st National People’s Conference resolution number one under the spotlight. Party leadership has observed, with dismay, the abuse of the resolution and the weaponisation of the ‘2030’ slogan.
The resolution is a collective outcome that cannot be monopolised by a few individuals for personal gain and glory.
These few individuals are now exploiting the resolution and the 2030 slogan to provoke discord and petty disciplinary cases. This must stop forthwith.
You’re all aware that the resolution was and is supported by everyone hence let us give the requisite party protocol time to process it accordingly.

Muchinguri-Kashiri, who also serves as the Defence Minister, is widely regarded as a close ally of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.
In her address, she seemed to take umbrage with the recent orchestrated attacks on Chiwenga, where a faction of party members sang derogatory songs about him at the National Heroes Acre, while lavishing praise on President Mnangagwa.
Muchinguri-Kashiri warned that this behaviour posed a “national security risk”, although she did not elaborate on the specific nature of the threat.
President Mnangagwa is currently serving his second and final term, which is set to expire in 2028. While he has publicly stated his intention to step down at the end of his term, many both within and outside ZANU PF remain skeptical about his commitment to relinquishing power.

Muchinguri-Kashiri Condemns Use Of "ED2030" Resolution To Create Factionalism In ZANU PF

Sengezo Tshabangu has withdrawn his urgent High Court application, which sought to interdict CCC president Welshman Ncube from recalling him from Parliament.
Through his lawyer, Advocate Lewis Uriri, Tshabangu, who claims to be the party’s interim secretary-general, informed High Court Judge Mary Zimba-Dube of their decision to withdraw the case.
In response, Ncube told NewsDay that it was never sensible for Tshabangu to file the application in the first place. Said Ncube:

It was not sensible to file two urgent chamber applications at once. He should have filed the interdict challenging his dismissal first, then the other one will proceed on normal basis.

In a related development, another case (HCH875/25), in which Tshabangu is contesting his expulsion from the party, has been postponed to March 21. This case was also scheduled to be heard by Judge Mary Zimba-Dube.
Meanwhile, Willias Madzimure, spokesperson for the CCC faction led by Welshman Ncube, issued a statement saying:

HCH875/25 has been postponed because the consolidated index was only availed by the registrar this morning which made it difficult for the court and the lawyers to follow hence the decision to postpone it to next Friday.
The other case HCH830/25, wherein Sengezo Tshabangu sought to interdict the party from recalling him from Parliament and the Speaker of Parliament from accepting the recall pending finalisation of the main case HCH875/25, was withdrawn without order of costs.

Tshabangu was expelled from the CCC for making unauthorized changes to parliamentary portfolios, making derogatory remarks about the party’s leadership, and undermining the party’s unity and reputation.
In response, Tshabangu sought an interim court order to prevent his recall from Parliament. Judge President Justice Zimba-Dube granted the order, allowing Tshabangu to retain his seat until the case is finalised.
However, Ncube countered with an opposing application, disputing Tshabangu’s claim to be a legitimate party member. Ncube argued that Tshabangu lacked legal grounds to sue the party.
Tshabangu’s application claimed that the terms of office for all party officials, including Ncube, had expired in May 2024.

In a handwritten note on an appeal letter from one of the fired activists, Jonasi Mandiwisa Musara, Mnangagwa declared the dismissals “null and void.”
Musara, a member of the Varakashi4ED group, which promotes the president’s agenda on social media, had petitioned Mnangagwa to reverse the decision to fire them.
Mnangagwa’s intervention, which directly challenges Chinamasa’s authority, could further deepen the factional rifts within ZANU PF, a party already grappling with infighting over succession issues.
Chinamasa, the executive director of the Varakashi4ED Social Media Unit, had claimed that the activists were dismissed for insulting him and other party officials.
The group, paid to attack critics of Mnangagwa and amplify pro-party messages, has become a key player in ZANU PF’s online warfare.
One of the dismissed activists, Tinotenda Gachange, shared Musara’s appeal letter on social media, now having Mnangagwa’s handwritten comments and signature. Wrote Gachange:

The G40 members were dispersed following the 2017 military coup that ended Robert Mugabe’s 37-year rule. Many of them are now in self-imposed exile, fearing persecution from Mnangagwa’s government.
Notable G40 members who fled the country include former cabinet ministers Saviour Kasukuwere, Walter Mzembi, Jonathan Moyo, Patrick Zhuwawo, and Mandiitawepi Chimene.
During a recent sermon at his Chitungwiza basilica, Makandiwa, who leads the United Families International Church (UFIC), said the remaining G40 members should be allowed to return to Zimbabwe, as they no longer hold power and pose no threat. Said Makandiwa, as quoted by <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/makandiwa-calls-for-return-of-g40-members-says-they-are-harmless/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>:

I have so much respect for Walter Mzembi. It is unfortunate that they are in a foreign land as we speak. You look at Walter Mzembi—he is harmless. He is pure.
If they can allow them back into their country, it will be a blessing for your nation. There is nothing wrong with that. No one is powerful besides the power that you give them.
</blockquote>
Mzembi was a regular attendee of Makandiwa’s church when he was still in Zimbabwe, and it remains unclear whether Makandiwa’s appeal was made to assist a prominent former church member.
Makandiwa also claimed that he had warned Mugabe during his presidency that he would be deposed, with Mnangagwa succeeding him.
The pastor further urged Zimbabweans who have sought better opportunities abroad due to the country’s economic difficulties to return home. He said:

Zimbabwe is full of blessings. Bring your children who are in the diaspora. They are blessings that have left.
</blockquote>
Makandiwa is regarded as one of Zimbabwe’s high-profile church leaders with close ties to ZANU PF, benefiting economically through his association with the ruling party.
In 2023, Makandiwa invited President Mnangagwa to his church, where he publicly endorsed him, saying he was doing a good job at developing the country’s infrastructure.

A pastor named Makandiwa wants the Zimbabwean president to let G40 members come back safely. These members were from the ZANU PF faction and ran away after a coup in 2017. Makandiwa thinks they are harmless now. Some notable G40 members who left include Saviour Kasukuwere and Jonathan Moyo. Makandiwa also told Zimbabweans abroad to come back home, saying the country has blessings. Makandiwa has ties to the ruling party and in 2023 endorsed the president for doing good work.

Makandiwa Urges Mnangagwa To Allow Safe Return Of Harmless G40 Fugitives

MDC-T president Douglas Mwonzora believes he is being targeted by ZANU PF through lawfare after the High Court nullified his 2022 election at the party’s congress, which saw him assume leadership.
Mwonzora claims that ZANU PF is behind the ruling as punishment for his opposition to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s alleged plan to extend his presidency beyond the constitutionally mandated two terms, set to expire in 2028.
Last week, High Court judge Justice Hapias Zhou ruled that Mwonzora must resign and allow for a fresh congress within six months, citing irregularities in the 2022 MDC-T Extraordinary Congress that led to his elevation as party leader.
Speaking to journalists in Harare, Mwonzora vowed not to be intimidated, reiterating his commitment to opposing the ED2030 agenda. Said Mwonzora (via <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/mwonzora-says-zanu-pf-punishing-him-for-resisting-2030-agenda-after-high-court-nullified-his-mdc-t-presidency/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>):

I want to say we are going to attenuate our fight against the 2030 agenda. We will never allow anybody to intimidate us against fighting the 2030 agenda.
So, if there is a faction within ZANU PF which has a hand in this judgment, we say ‘tough luck’ to you. We are going to intensify our fight against the 2030 agenda.
We will never allow the emasculation of our Constitution, we will never allow being bullied against defending our Constitution.

Mwonzora said Mnangagwa’s supporters should not be allowed to reverse what Zimbabwean voters endorsed in the 2023 referendum when they approved the new Constitution. He said:
<blockquote>
The people of Zimbabwe are stakeholders, they spoke during the outreach programme about what they wanted in the Constitution. They spoke during the referendum on what they wanted in this Constitution. 
What they said they wanted in this Constitution was that a President must run the country for a maximum of 10 years, after which they must go home.
We are saying, President Mnangagwa, after the expiry of your term in 2028, go home, and nothing is going to intimidate us from this path.

Mwonzora claimed that MDC-T had formed a coalition with other progressive forces, including political parties, the church, civil society, and war veterans, to resist Mnangagwa’s ambitious plan to become a “life president.”

The High Court said Douglas Mwonzora's leadership of MDC-T is not valid and there must be a new election. Mwonzora thinks ZANU PF is behind this because he opposes Mnangagwa's plan to stay president longer. The court found problems with the congress that made Mwonzora leader. Mwonzora is not scared and will fight against Mnangagwa's plan. He says people want presidents to leave after 10 years. Mwonzora is working with others to stop Mnangagwa from being "life president."

High Court Nullifies Mwonzora's MDC-T Presidency, Orders Fresh Election

Mthwakazi Republic Party (MRP) leader, Mqondisi Moyo, has condemned the proposal by Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe to include Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology training in Zimbabwe’s Early Childhood Development (ECD) curriculum.
Speaking at a training session for councillors and local authority staff from Matabeleland North at the Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology in Bulawayo on Friday, Garwe argued that ideological education should start at the earliest stages of a child’s development.
He claimed this would help cultivate a strong sense of national consciousness in Zimbabweans from a young age. Said Garwe:

We want you to go as far down as even the ECDs in terms of an ECD-based curriculum so that our children or our grandchildren will grow up knowing the nature, the structure, and the architecture of their heritage, which is Zimbabwe.
</blockquote>
In an interview with the <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200039052/storm-over-ministers-ideology-lesson-for-ecds-call">Southern Eye</a>, Moyo described Garwe’s statement as a calculated attempt to embed a ZANU PF-dominated ideology within Zimbabwe’s education system. He said:

This move, under the guise of “national identity and patriotism,” is a direct threat to the cultural identity, language and heritage of Matabeleland indigenous groups, particularly the Ndebele people.
Garwe, a staunch ZANU PF supporter, is merely echoing the party’s long-standing policy of political domination.
The Phakamani High School incident highlights ZANU PF’s push. Students protested against being forced to learn the Shona language and culture, sparking concerns about the erasure of Matabeleland and Midlands indigenous languages and cultures.
</blockquote>
Moyo also warned that Garwe’s proposal would undermine the country’s diversity and foster a culture of superiority.
He argued that by introducing ideological training at the earliest stages of education, the government aimed to create generations of Zimbabweans conditioned to accept the dominance of one tribe over others.

The Mthwakazi Republic Party leader is against a proposal to teach ideology in early childhood education. He believes it will push a ZANU PF agenda and threaten indigenous cultures. Garwe, a ZANU PF supporter, wants young children to learn about Zimbabwe's heritage early. MRP leader Moyo warns this will erase other cultures and promote one tribe's dominance. The proposal could create a generation that accepts one tribe as superior. Moyo is against this proposal as it threatens diversity and cultural identity.

Mthwakazi Rejects Garwe’s Proposal To Include Ideology Training In ECD Curriculum

Peter Munyanduri, leader of the New Innovative and Modernisation Front, has already begun campaigning for the 2028 elections, engaging with passengers in public transport vehicles.
During a recent ride, Munyanduri introduced himself, saying, “My name is Peter Munyanduri, 2028 Presidential candidate. Please vote for me.”
In an interview with <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200039029/presidential-aspirant-rolls-out-2028-campaign">NewsDay</a>, Munyanduri said many politicians make the mistake of only engaging with the public during election time, and he wants to be different by reaching out early. He said:

I am already campaigning, I believe I can be the best president for this country.
The kombi is where Zimbabweans debate everything — from politics to the prices of cooking oil. Why shouldn’t our leaders listen (to people) here first?

After the 2018 elections, Munyanduri joined the Political Leaders Actors Dialogue (POLAD) platform but was expelled for criticizing President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government.
Mnangagwa showered political leaders with luxury cars and generous allowances in exchange for their loyalty and praise.
But following his expulsion from POLAD, Munyanduri’s vehicle was repossessed by the State. He said:

My conscience won’t allow me to keep quiet when I see something wrong. I raised issues of unfair electoral ground.
I questioned the issue of rigging. There is unfair coverage of political parties. I also raised the issue of funding. Small parties do not get any funding. I was expelled for that.

Munyanduri gained attention during the 2018 election when he promised to provide a balanced breakfast, including eggs, bacon, and milk, for every Zimbabwean.
He also pledged to create a Fruit Authority of Zimbabwe to establish fruit tree forests across the country if elected.
However, he didn’t win the election and finished in fifth place.
In the 2023 election, Munyanduri didn’t run for president but instead campaigned for a parliamentary seat, which he lost.

Peter Munyanduri is running for president in the 2028 elections. He is already campaigning by talking to people on public transport. Presidential Aspirant Peter Munyanduri Kicks Off 2028 Campaign

ZANU PF Women’s League national chairperson, Mabel Chinomona, has declared that President Emmerson Mnangagwa will not be stepping down, despite growing calls from some war veterans for his resignation before the end of his term.
The calls for Mnangagwa to resign have intensified in recent weeks, notably from war veterans like Blessed Runesu Geza and Andrease Mathibela.
These demands come amid efforts by Mnangagwa’s allies to extend his presidency beyond his second and final term, set to expire in 2028.
Speaking to the national executive of the Women’s League in Harare on Friday, Chinomona castigated the continued attacks on the President, calling the situation unprecedented. She said:
<blockquote>
People are busy giving each other positions on social media, that this is your year, so-and-so will assume leadership. There is no sun that rises before another one sets…
It is common knowledge that from Mnangagwa, there will come other leaders, it is everywhere, this one comes and goes…
</blockquote>
Chinomona, who also serves as Senate President, accused some party members of accepting bribes as small as US$10 to undermine the party leadership.
At Friday’s event, she showcased state-of-the-art egg incubators, which will be distributed across all 10 provinces to support poultry projects led by women.

Chinomona spoke out against attacks on the President and accused some members of taking bribes. She also showcased egg incubators to help women in poultry projects.

Chinomona Fires Back At Mnangagwa's Critics

The Welshman Ncube-led CCC has accused the Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Mudenda, and Senate President, Mabel Chinomona, of double standards after they indicated they would not act on any recall order against Sengezo Tshabangu until his court challenge is concluded.
Tshabangu, who has sparked controversy within the opposition party due to numerous unilateral recalls since October 2023, recently filed an interdict to stop his recall from the Senate following his expulsion for indiscipline.
His sacking paved the way for the CCC to recall him, but he challenged the decision, claiming the party’s disciplinary committee was improperly constituted.
Tshabangu named the CCC, its National Disciplinary Committee, the Speaker, and the Senate President as respondents.
In a surprising development, parliament’s lawyers indicated they would not oppose Tshabangu’s challenge despite being co-respondents in the case.
CCC spokesperson Willias Madzimure accused the Speaker and Senate President of double standards, pointing out that they had acted without hesitation on previous recalls by Tshabangu, even when affected MPs had filed court challenges. Said Madzimure (via <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/ncube-cries-foul-after-speaker-chooses-to-keep-tshabangu-before-court-decision-on-recall/">ZimLive</a>):

At the case management meeting, the Speaker of Parliament’s lawyers indicated, for the first time in the history of recalls, that The Speaker and President of Senate would not oppose the application but instead would abide by whatever ruling the court will make.
It is worth noting that the Speaker has consistently opposed applications filed by CCC against Tshabangu in which applications he should have been taking the position that he would abide by the court rulings.

When Tshabangu unexpectedly took control of the CCC after the August 2023 general elections, he recalled several popular CCC MPs, including Gift Siziva and Amos Chibaya, claiming they had ceased to be members of the party.
However, Tshabangu failed to provide any evidence regarding how the MPs had ceased their membership, what charges, if any, they faced, or whether any disciplinary action had been taken against them.
Tshabangu will learn his fate on March 17, when the court is set to deliver a judgment on his challenge. The matter will be argued before the Judge President on March 13, 2025.

Welshman Ncube's party is upset with the Speaker & Senate President for not recalling Tshabangu until court case is done. Tshabangu challenged his expulsion from the Senate due to indiscipline. Parliament's lawyers won't oppose his challenge. Ncube's party believes this is unfair because they were quick to act in the past. Tshabangu recalled MPs without evidence of them leaving the party. His fate will be decided by the court on March 17, 2025. Ncube's party is frustrated by the delay in Tshabangu's recall.

Welshman Ncube Hits Out At Mudenda And Chinomona For Blocking Tshabangu Recall

A faction of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) has called for President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s resignation, despite having over three years remaining in his second and final term, reports <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200038947/war-vets-give-ed-two-week-ultimatum">NewsDay</a>.
The faction’s leader, Andrease Mathibela, said at a press conference in Harare on Friday that they had consulted with Zimbabwean citizens, who agreed that Mnangagwa should step down. Said Mathibela:
<blockquote>
Maybe our presser today is the last. We want to address the elephant in the room as quickly as possible. It may be in a week or two, the pressure will be on.
</blockquote>
Mathibela also said the association fully supported Geza, whom they had sent to the front, describing him as “our rabble-rouser.” He said:
<blockquote>
So obviously, the government is not serious about addressing the crisis (that) it has created itself.
So, when we look, as citizens of this country, when we look at any crisis, we ask: What is the root cause? Then we deal with the root cause.
I am here, on behalf of all veterans and members of the public, ordinary people. We were quiet, while all these other noise makers were trying to be relevant. Guess what? We were busy consulting.
Just like what we did during the liberation struggle. We were working with the masses. We were working with the chiefs.
We were working with the mass media, spirit mediums, I would say. And they have told us, that all veterans, you put your government there, sort it out.
</blockquote>
Mathibela asserted that the masses had expressed the need to hold the government they put in power accountable and demand that Mnangagwa step down. He said:
<blockquote>
That is the challenge they have given us. They say you put this government, you sort it out. And very true, we will definitely sort it out.
I am happy that the nation, at large, which is the suffocating victims of this crisis, has said ‘We will go with you veterans, every step of the way’.
They have told us, in no uncertain circumstances, that this time around, we must lead the onslaught, where the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe must step down immediately.
And we are in agreement. We have reasons which we can explain throughout the night, until the following morning.

Mathibela also dismissed the US$1.5 million and housing promises made to war veterans by Paul Tungwarara, an investment advisor to Mnangagwa.
He mocked these promises, referring to the houses as “Tungwararas,” and questioned why only war veterans were expected to benefit, while others who contributed to putting Mnangagwa in power were left out.

A group of war veterans wants the President of Zimbabwe, Mnangagwa, to step down. They say the people they talked to agree. The leader of the group says they need to address the problem quickly. The war veterans say they will work with the people to make sure the government is held accountable. They also don't believe promises made to them by an advisor to Mnangagwa. They think everyone who helped the President should benefit, not just war veterans. They want Mnangagwa to resign now.

War Veterans Association Faction Calls On Mnangagwa To Step Down

Judge President Justice Mary Zimba-Dube on Thursday ordered the CCC not to recall expelled self-imposed interim secretary-general Senator Sengezo Tshabangu from Parliament until his High Court application challenging his dismissal is heard.
Tshabangu approached the High Court seeking an order to prevent his recall, naming his party, the Speaker of Parliament, and the President of the Senate as the first, second, and third respondents, respectively.
In the interdict matter, Justice Zimba-Dube recorded an undertaking from the first respondent (CCC) not to recall Tshabangu or undermine case number HCH 830/25, which pertains to Tshabangu’s court case against his expulsion. The Speaker of Parliament’s lawyers acknowledged the order.
As reported by the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/judge-president-issues-interim-order-barring-tshabangus-recall-from-parliament/">Chronicle</a>, in the declaratory matter, the respondents must file their opposing papers by Tuesday, 4 March 2025, while the applicants must submit their answering affidavit and heads of argument by Monday, 10 March 2025.
The case is scheduled for a hearing on Thursday, 13 March 2025. Tshabangu has cited Sesel Zvidzai, Concillia Chinanzvavana, Gilbert Kadogora, Shepherd Mushonga, and the CCC as the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth respondents, respectively. These people were members of the disciplinary committee that expelled him.
This interim order ensures that Tshabangu will retain his parliamentary seat while his legal challenge progresses.

A judge said Senator Tshabangu can stay in Parliament while he fights his removal. Tshabangu asked the court to stop his party from recalling him. The court said the party cannot take him out until the case is heard. Tshabangu's case will be heard on March 13, 2025. His party and other people who kicked him out must respond by March 4. This order lets Tshabangu keep his seat while he fights to stay in Parliament.

Tshabangu Wins Temporary Court Ruling To Keep His Senatorial Seat

Sengezo Tshabangu, the self-proclaimed interim secretary general of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has approached the High Court to prevent his recall from Parliament, reports <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/tshabangu-rushes-to-court-to-block-imminent-recall/">ZimLive</a>.
After taking control of the party following the August 2023 general elections, Tshabangu used his newfound authority to recall several MPs and councillors.
Nelson Chamisa eventually left CCC upon realising Tshabangu was in charge of the party with the support of State institutions.
Tshabangu was recently expelled from the party by Welshman Ncube and now faces the possibility of being removed from his Senate seat.
To prevent this, Tshabangu has filed an urgent chamber application against the CCC, the Speaker of the National Assembly, and the President of the Senate.
In his application (case number HCH875/25), Tshabangu argues that his recall would be unlawful, citing an irregularly constituted disciplinary hearing held by the CCC on February 12.
He seeks an interdict to prevent the Speaker from declaring his seat vacant and a declaratory order affirming his continued tenure in Parliament.

Sengezo Tshabangu is fighting in court to stop his removal from Parliament by the Citizens Coalition for Change. He took over the party after the 2023 elections and recalled some members. Tshabangu Seeks Court Order To Block Imminent Recall From Senate

Sengezo Tshabangu, a Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) senator, has denied ever being a member of the faction led by Welshman Ncube.
Tshabangu said this following his dismissal from the party last week after a misconduct charge during a disciplinary hearing held by Ncube’s CCC faction.
He was expelled for making unilateral changes to the party’s leadership in Parliament.
Although Tshabangu attended the disciplinary hearing, he claims he did so under protest and insists that he has never been part of Ncube’s faction.
He also said he does not align with either of the two factions within CCC: CCC Blue, which supports former party leader Nelson Chamisa, and CCC Green, aligned with Ncube.
Tshabangu further argued that his position as a Senator is not connected to Ncube’s faction. He said according to the CCC’s constitution, the terms for the party’s leadership expired on May 27, 2024, leaving the party without a sitting president.
In a statement, Tshabangu’s spokesperson, Nqobizitha Mlilo, claimed that Tshabangu has never been a member of CCC Green or affiliated with its structures.
Mlilo also argued that Tshabangu was neither nominated nor deployed as a Senator by Ncube’s faction and has never attended any of its meetings.
Mlilo accused Ncube of trying to gain control of CCC’s financial resources under the Political Parties (Finance) Act.
According to The Standard, despite Tshabangu’s claims of being promised millions of dollars for taking control of the CCC, he has yet to receive any funds. 
The government has indicated that the disbursement of party funds will be delayed until the factions resolve their leadership dispute.

Sengezo Tshabangu, a member of the CCC party, denies being part of a group led by Welshman Ncube. He was kicked out of the party for changing leadership without permission. Tshabangu says he doesn't belong to CCC Blue or CCC Green factions. His spokesperson also says he was not chosen by Ncube's group. Tshabangu claims he was promised money for control of CCC, but hasn't got it. The government won't give party funds until the leadership issue is settled.
