CCC’s disputed interim Secretary General, Sengezo Tshabangu, has vowed to address what he describes as the “invisible hand” behind the discord within his party.
As reported by <a href="https://bulawayo24.com/index-id-news-sc-national-byo-250533.html">Bulawayo24</a>, Tshabangu attended a disciplinary hearing chaired by a three-person panel: Senator Sesel Zvidzai, Hon. Concilia Chinanzvavana, and Gilbert Kagodora.
Mushonga served as the Arbiter General, while Kucaca Phulu, representing Tshabangu and instructed by Mabikwa Attorneys, appeared on his behalf.
At the start of the hearing, Tshabangu raised concerns that he had not been provided with a copy of the charge sheet detailing the allegations against him, nor was he informed of the specific provisions of the party constitution under which the charges were brought.
In a statement issued through his spokesperson, Nqobizitha Mlilo, Tshabangu alleged that someone was remotely influencing the panel, preventing it from operating independently.
He further claimed the panel appeared to be taking instructions from an unidentified figure yet to be revealed. He said:

At every turn in the hearing, and when a ruling was to be made, the panel repeatedly made telephone calls to someone who gave instructions as to how the panel should rule on each point.
On this issue, Senator Tshabangu has given instructions to his Attorneys to subpoena the telephone records of the purported Disciplinary Committee members to establish the identity of the person the panel members repeatedly obtained instructions from.

Tshabangu claimed that the lines of communication for resolving what seemed like legitimate differences between the parties have now been irreparably broken, making reconciliation impossible.
He also pledged to bring order to CCC’s parliamentary and local government caucuses. Said Tshabangu:

In the next few moments, action will be taken in decisive terms to bring much-needed stability and cohesion to the party, more so, in the Party Parliamentary Caucus and Local Government Caucus.
The historic work which this 10th Parliament has to, and is about to take in the national interest requires the highest form of cohesion that no moment will lost in frivolity and trivialities.
The Parliamentary Caucus and the Local Government Caucuses, as the only remaining legally valid Article 6 party organs should work in the most efficient and effective manner possible. All tools will be deployed to ensure that this happens. Senator Tshabangu says there shall be discipline.
The general membership of the party is assured that stability will be restored, the needful done, and soon, there will be no unknown knowns.

ZANU PF Secretary for War Veterans, Douglas Mahiya, warned war veterans opposing President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s extended rule that they could be silenced indefinitely, reported <a href="https://cite.org.zw/mahiya-threatens-to-silence-war-veterans-opposing-mnangagwas-extended-stay-in-office/">CITE</a>.
His remarks were aimed at Blessed Runesu Geza and other veterans critical of Mnangagwa’s leadership, citing issues like corruption and cronyism.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has launched a manhunt for Geza, who faces criminal charges, including theft, undermining the authority of the President and incitement to violence.
Mahiya also claimed that had Mnangagwa been less principled, ZANU PF could have declared a state of emergency to extend his rule, citing the sanctions imposed on the country as akin to a declaration of war by Western powers.
Mahiya made comments during the launch of a War Veterans Fund and empowerment programme in Bulawayo on Saturday. Said Mahiya:

We were sanctioned by the West. That’s a sign that we are in a war. When a country has sanctions, when people are in a war, they can stop going for elections because they are in a war and declare a state of emergency.
Mnangagwa is a proper, listening, educated leader, but if the country was under someone else, we could have declared that ‘we are in a state of emergency and there are no elections.’ Then we would remove Mnangagwa from power only if he died…
The leadership we want is not one of a person who is highly educated or who has a character that we don’t know.
We want a leader who has a character and hunhu that we know, and that has been shown by Mnangagwa in the period that he has been running the country. He can extend his term so that the population can benefit.
So if you refuse, we have the right, although forbidden by the law, to act otherwise to stop you indefinitely from saying such things.

Mahiya warned war veterans not to believe that their participation in the liberation struggle grants them the authority to oppose plans to extend Mnangagwa’s term, especially when the majority support it. He said:

It doesn’t give you power, if you do not follow what people want, your going to Zambia and being a war veteran will be useless. You won’t have standing because you are ganging against the people.
I don’t expect, as the secretary of war veterans, to hear any other war veteran say the opposite because the party’s constitution says our duty as the league is to protect the interests of the party and its leadership, which is the resolution that was made here in Bulawayo. That is the interest of the party, and we also protect the leadership.

A resolution from the ZANU PF National People’s Conference in Bulawayo last year called for amending the Constitution to extend Mnangagwa’s second and final term until 2030.

War veteran Douglas Mahiya warned other veterans who don't want President Mnangagwa to stay in power longer. He said they could be silenced forever. Mahiya is mad at Blessed Geza and others who criticize Mnangagwa for being corrupt and having too many friends in power. The police are looking for Geza because of criminal charges. Mahiya thinks the country is at war because of sanctions. He said if Mnangagwa wasn't a good leader, they could have declared a state of emergency to keep him in power. Mahiya warned war veterans not to go against the majority who want Mnangagwa to stay until 2030.

Mahiya: War Veterans Opposing "ED 2030" Will Be Silenced Forever

High Court judge Justice Nevile Wamambo dismissed Welshman Ncube’s application for the immediate enforcement of a previous High Court ruling that prohibited Sengezo Tshabangu from unilaterally reshuffling CCC’s parliamentary leadership.
Last month, the High Court issued a ruling preventing Tshabangu from making changes to the party’s parliamentary leadership, but Tshabangu appealed the decision at the Supreme Court.
In response, the Ncube faction requested permission from the High Court to enforce the judgment while the appeal was still pending.
However, in a ruling delivered this week, Justice Wamambo rejected the Ncube faction’s application. He said:

After reading documents filed of record and hearing counsel, it is ordered that the application be and is hereby dismissed with applicant (Prof Ncube) paying costs to the first (Sen Tshabangu) and third (Mlotshwa) respondents.

Meanwhile, Ncube has called for a disciplinary hearing with Tshabangu, scheduled for tomorrow.
Tshabangu is facing accusations of making unilateral appointments and reassignments of CCC members in Parliament, moves the Ncube camp argues were unauthorised and illegal.

The High Court said no to Welshman Ncube's request about CCC's parliamentary leadership changes. Last month, the court said Tshabangu can't change leaders, but he appealed. Ncube wanted the ruling enforced early, but the court said no. Now there's a hearing about Tshabangu's actions. Some say he made illegal moves in Parliament. The court said Ncube has to pay costs for the request.

Workers at Blessed Runesu Geza’s farm in Sanyati on Monday apprehended a 19-year-old man, suspected of spying after he was caught taking pictures of their boss’ farmhouse.
The young man, who identified himself as Nigel Murwira, was swiftly handed over to the police in Sanyati for further questioning.
At the time of the incident, Geza, a war veteran and ZANU PF central committee member was not present at the farm.
However, farm manager Isaiah Lozane told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200038157/man-caught-spying-at-gezas-farm">NewsDay</a> that their suspicions were aroused when they noticed a car with South African registration plates dropping off the young man near the property. Said Lozane:

He started shooting pictures of the main house, and that’s when we confronted him. The young man gave incoherent answers about his mission.
At first, he claimed he was looking for employment as a general labourer but after interrogation he said he had been sent by people he was not at liberty to name to take pictures of the farm structures and get US$200 as payment.

The suspected spy reportedly attempted to flee during interrogation and was injured while climbing the perimeter fence. Added Lozane:

He later claimed that he had been picked up at Patchway along Kadoma-Sanyati Road by unidentified men to Geza’s farm where his mission was to take pictures in return for $200.
He told me that along the way the men in the Honda Fit were being directed by someone on the phone because none of us knew where the farm was.

The men in the Honda Fit, realising that Murwira was under arrest, sped off in a hurry, disappearing into the distance.
Meanwhile, Geza, the former Sanyati legislator, finds himself at the centre of a political storm. He has been clashing with powerful figures within his own party who are pushing for an extension of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term until 2030.
Geza, a staunch war veteran, is leading a faction that opposes the term extension, while Mnangagwa’s loyalists have been rallying against him, calling for his expulsion from the party and even arrest.

Outspoken war veteran Blessed “Bombshell” Geza has issued a stern warning to Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Commissioner General Stephen Mutamba, urging him not to shoot any Zimbabwean exercising their democratic right to demonstrate.
In an interview with HStv, Geza said that no one should be arrested for protesting and declared that war veterans would take action if the police resorted to such measures.
He stressed that the right to demonstrate is sacred, pointing out that countless Zimbabweans shed their blood and gave their lives to secure this fundamental freedom. Said Geza (via <a href="https://masvingomirror.com/dont-shoot-demonstrators-bombshell-geza-warns-police-chief/">The Mirror</a>):

Be warned (Mutamba); if we hear there is anyone arrested for the enjoyment of his/her constitutional rights, you will see it. We will deal with you. Don’t be used by anybody on the basis of your relationship or nepotism. I want to warn members of the security forces, in particular the Police.

Geza also spoke out against the many roadblocks on Zimbabwe’s roads, warning Commissioner General Mutamba not to turn the country into a police state.
Geza is part of a group of war veterans who have openly opposed ZANU PF’s plans to change the Constitution and delay the 2028 elections, which would allow President Emmerson Mnangagwa to stay in office until 2030.

Blessed Geza, a war veteran, warned the police chief not to arrest or shoot peaceful protesters in Zimbabwe. He said protesters have the right to demonstrate, and the war veterans will take action if police use force. Geza also criticized too many roadblocks in the country and warned against turning Zimbabwe into a police state. He is against changing the Constitution to delay elections and keep President Mnangagwa in power. Geza wants everyone to respect people's rights and not abuse their power.

Geza Says War Veterans Will Respond If Police Use Force On Peaceful Demonstrators

National Democratic Working Group chairman Job Sikhala, a well-known political and civil society activist, has spoken out about his arrest on Saturday in Penhalonga, Manicaland, alongside 40 fellow activists.
According to Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), Sikhala and his group were charged under Section 7(1)(b) of the Maintenance of Public Order Act, which pertains to holding a public gathering without notifying the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
In a statement posted on X early Sunday morning, Sikhala revealed that he was released that same night along with 39 others, but their chief national organiser, Joelson Mugari, remained in custody. Wrote Sikhala:

I have been released with 39 other leaders from different constituent groups who constitute the National Democratic Working Group(NDWG) national leadership.NDWG is a social justice movement whose objective is to engage citizens in a consultative process about their country. It is not a political party. The 8th of February 2025 was a calendar date for its leadership meetings that happens after every 3 months.
The meeting was purely an executive meeting to deliberate on the progress made on the consultative process that is happening throughout the country. The meeting was at the Beat of the Forest Resort in Penhalonga.
Initially, a Toyota Hilux double cab with dark windows arrived with 5 members of the CIO led by Muvhangeri, whose home area is Buhera. They arrived &amp; parked at the premises &amp; engaged with the NDWG Chief National Organiser Democrat Engineer Joelson Mugari.
After some around 5 minutes they left. A few minutes later, another vehicle a Toyota Hilux without number plates arrived with members of the Police Intelligence (PI) formerly PISI &amp; members of the CID Law &amp; Order led by Ngweme. They were dropped &amp; left, &amp; again, Engineer Joelson Mugari engaged them to seek their mission. While he was engaging them, 3 truckloads of riot Police &amp; AK47 wielding police officers descended on the venue led by a plain clothed officer called Shonhiwa.
Shonhiwa stormed into the venue &amp; screamed, “Beat &amp; catch everyone here. Rush &amp; close that other exit entrance.” The AK47 wielding &amp; baton stick holding police officers started assaulting some members and kickedthem around.
I remained calm seated on the couch next to Dr Wurayayi Zembe. Then, the other AK47 wielding police officer pointed his gun at Dr. Zembe screaming, “I am going to shoot you.” Dr Zembe remained calm and watched the drama. This happened right next to me.
After some minute or so, Engineer Joelson Mugari called me to tell me that the Officer Commanding wants to talk to me. I went at the eastern entrance where he was standing at the door. I stretched my hand to greet him so as to hear his story. He arrogantly tucked his hands into his pockets and said, “Don’t greet me. Ndakarombaka ini. Ko mhepo dzangu dzikazokubata?” He then talked to Dr. Zembe and Dr. Zembe told him that he knows his village in Gutu and where he comes from.
He then belowed to me, “I have invited you to tell you the charge you and these people are facing. We are charging you for contravening Section 7 of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act(MOPA) for having this gathering without police authority. I felt a laugh in myself on how 41 people could have been said to have contravened that section when it does not say so.
Secondly, MOPA does not sanction the notification of executive meetings. It’s like ZANU PF seeking police clearance to hold its Politbro meetings. The law only talks of holding public meetings, processions or demonstrations on public places. The meeting we held was in a bush at Beats of Forest and wondered how it turns to be a public place. Secondly, they are mistaking the National Democratic Working Group(NDWG), to be a political party which it is not.
We were then commandeered to get into waiting pick up trucks under heavy and torrential rains. Mutare was heavily raining today. Rains pounded on us from Beats of Forest to Penhalonga Police station around 12 noon. We all got wet that we looked like ramshackles when we finally arrived at Penhalonga Police Station which was a distance.
All our phones were switched off and we were asked to sit down on some dirty floor. Recording of each individual’s details took about 3 hours. We were suddenly told that we are no longer handling your case and you must be taken to Mutare Central CID Law and Order. At the CID Law and Order we were not asked to plead to any charge but they took Engineer Joelson Mugari, Dr. Wurayayi Zembe, Nyabeze and myself for interviews. To be continued……..

Job Sikhala was arrested with 40 other activists for having a meeting without telling the police in Penhalonga, Manicaland. He was released on the same night, but one person remained in custody. The meeting was just to talk about the progress of their work, not to cause any trouble. The police came and started hitting people with batons and guns. Sikhala thought it was funny that they were charged for breaking a law that they didn't actually break. They were taken to the police station in the rain, had their phones taken away, and were moved to Mutare Central CID Law and Order for more questioning.

Job Sikhala Details His Arrest And Release In Penhalonga [Part One]

Job Sikhala, the leader of the National Democratic Working Group, along with 38 other people, was arrested in Nyanga, Manicaland Province, on Saturday, 8 February.
The group was detained for allegedly holding a meeting without notifying the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), as required by law.
The former Zengeza West legislator and the others were charged under Section 7(1)(b) of the Maintenance of Public Order Act.
They are being represented by lawyers from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights.
Section 7(1)(b) of the Maintenance of Public Order Act requires that the convener of a public meeting must provide written notice to the regulating authority for the district in which the public meeting is to be held no later than five days before the meeting. The notice must be signed by the convener.
However, if the convener is unable to write the notice, the regulating authority may do so upon request. During an election period, the notice period is reduced to three days.

Job Sikhala and 38 other people were arrested for having a meeting without telling the police in Nyanga. They are charged under a law that says you have to tell the police about a meeting at least five days before. If it's during an election, you only have to tell them three days before. They have lawyers helping them from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights.

ZANU PF Politburo member Ziyambi Ziyambi has said that President Mnangagwa and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga are united and working together, and there is no factionalism within the party.
Speaking at the party’s Mashonaland West Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) meeting in Chinhoyi on Wednesday, Ziyambi asserted that claims of factional fights within the party are false. He said (via <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/no-feud-between-president-vp/">The Herald</a>):

We now have a clique of people who are fanning divisions within our party, claiming to be representing and speaking on behalf of our leaders President Mnangagwa and his deputies.
There is no division between President Mnangagwa and Vice President Chiwenga and claims that there are factional fights within the party are false.
I am a Politburo member who has never seen Vice President Chiwenga disobey and denigrate his superior. This should be a shining example for all of us.
When Vice President Chiwenga joined Cabinet, he taught me a lot about politics, and the main thing he taught me was to be loyal and respectful.
I have never heard President Mnangagwa say he despises his deputy or Vice President Chiwenga. Who are you (Geza) to claim that there is bad blood between the two?

Blessed Geza, also known as “Bombshell,” is a ZANU PF Central Committee member and war veteran.
He has been a vocal critic of Mnangagwa, particularly opposing the push to extend Mnangagwa’s term beyond the constitutional limits.

Chiwenga Loyal To Mnangagwa, No Factionalism In ZANU PF, Says Ziyambi

The ZANU PF Masvingo provincial executive has suspended Gutu East Member of Parliament Benjamin Ganyiwa and Chiredzi North Member of Parliament Roy Bhila for allegedly causing divisions within the party and damaging its reputation.
Bhila serves as the party’s provincial Secretary for Finance, while Ganyiwa holds the position of provincial Secretary for Business Development.
Ganyiwa faces four charges, including holding a meeting at his homestead without notifying district and provincial party structures, an action considered disloyal by the party.
Ganyiwa is also accused of promoting factionalism by inviting members from other constituencies to the meeting.
The party’s provincial chairman, Robson Mavhenyengwa, said both Ganyiwa and Bhila have been issued prohibition orders and are barred from conducting any party business until their cases are reviewed by the National Disciplinary Committee.
Their matter has now been referred to the party’s disciplinary committee, chaired by Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, the national chairperson. Mavhenyengwa said:

No one is bigger than the party, the disciplinary process will be followed through, regardless of one’s position within the party.

The suspensions of Bhila and Ganyiwa are believed to be linked to internal ZANU PF leadership conflicts regarding a proposal to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s second term by two years, beyond the constitutional limits to 2030.
This proposal has faced opposition within ZANU PF, with some members rallying around Deputy President Constantino Chiwenga, who also opposes plans to amend the constitution.
Bhila was removed from his position as Deputy Industry and Commerce Minister by Mnangagwa in November 2023.

ZANU PF, a political party in Zimbabwe, suspended two MPs named Ganyiwa and Bhila for causing problems in the party. This follows recent calls for Mnangagwa’s resignation by Central Committee member Blessed Geza and some war veterans, who accuse him of constitutional violations, escalating corruption, and betraying the ideals of the liberation struggle.
Geza and several other war veterans are opposed to Resolution Number 1 from the ZANU PF Annual National People’s Conference held in Bulawayo in October 2024, which calls for the extension of Mnangagwa’s term beyond 2028.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, February 5, ZANU PF Secretary for Information and Publicity and Party Spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa said the party would take disciplinary action against Geza for his remarks. Said Mutsvangwa:

The outlandish, treasonable and egregious rantings of errant Runesu Geza offended the hallowed tenets of Party Discipline for a Member of the Central Committee.
They also involved reckless attempts to usurp the credentials of War Veteran entities in good standing with ZANU-PF, the Party of the Permanent Zimbabwe Revolution.
The relevant party organs of organization and discipline are currently seized with this contravention as it is holistically and expeditiously handled and dispensed with.
The Department of Information assures the Party membership of absolute loyalty of the rank and file supporters to President Mnangagwa and that they retain full confidence of the full and legal implementation of Resolution #1 of the Oct 2024 Bulawayo Conference under the aegis of the 2013 Constitution of Zimbabwe.

ZANU PF is supporting President Mnangagwa staying in power until 2030, even though some party members, like Blessed Geza, want him to resign. Geza and others don't agree with the decision to extend Mnangagwa's term. The party is going to punish Geza for speaking out against the president. Mutsvangwa: Geza To Face Disciplinary Action For "Treasonous" Remarks

ZANU PF Politburo member and Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Ziyambi Ziyambi, said that the party would request Police Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba to arrest war veteran and Central Committee member Blessed Runesu Geza on charges of murder.
Speaking to ZANU PF members at a meeting in the North Court, Zvimba East Constituency, on February 3, Ziyambi called for an investigation into Geza’s alleged involvement in the death of an unnamed individual at his homestead several years ago. Said Ziyambi:

In the past, he murdered someone at his homestead and the case was not thoroughly investigated. If you murder someone the case does not just disappear, we’re going to tell Mutamba to investigate.

ZANU PF’s Mashonaland West Province has recommended the expulsion of Geza from the party, citing allegations of undermining and threatening President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Geza has accused Mnangagwa of violating the constitution, exacerbating corruption, and betraying the principles of the liberation struggle. He has also called for Mnangagwa’s immediate resignation.

ZANU PF Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi says Geza is a murderer and should be arrested. Geza is accused of killing someone at his home years ago. Ziyambi wants the police to investigate. The party is also considering expelling Geza for speaking out against President Mnangagwa. Geza is calling for Mnangagwa to resign and has accused him of breaking the law and being corrupt. The situation is tense between ZANU PF members.

ZANU PF Central Committee member and war veteran, Blessed Runesu Geza, has apologized for his involvement in the removal of the late former president, Robert Mugabe, in November 2017, which led to the rise of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200037822/zanu-pf-seeks-to-oust-treasonous-ed-critic-geza-report">HSTV</a>, a digital broadcaster owned by Alpha Media Holdings, Geza, who is reportedly facing the possibility of expulsion from the ruling party, claimed that once Mnangagwa assumed power, he escalated corruption, neglected the people, and focused primarily on his family. Said Geza:

We gave you Mnangagwa with the hope that he would lead our country toward recovery, uphold the constitution, and restore hope to the people.

Meanwhile, ZANU PF Mashonaland West Province on Monday recommended Gezi’s expulsion from the party for allegedly undermining and threatening President Mnangagwa.

ZANU PF Mashonaland West Province has recommended the expulsion of Blessed “Bombshell” Geza, a war veteran and Central Committee member, for allegedly undermining and threatening President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Ziyambi asserted that ZANU PF Mashonaland West Province disassociates itself from Geza’s comments and supports the decision to extend Mnangagwa’s second term by two years. He said:

Nobody in Mashonaland West is supporting his shenanigans, as a province, we solidly stand firm behind the resolution to extend the President’s second term by two years so that he realises his Vision 2030. 
We have since resolved to recommend the expulsion of Cde Geza, and the National Chairman, Cde Oppah Muchinguri, is seized with our decision. It now lies with the National Disciplinary Committee.

Geza has been accused of boycotting the Provincial Co-ordinating Committee (PCC), Provincial Executive Committee (PEC), and Central Committee meetings.
Provincial chairperson, Mary Mliswa-Chikoka, said that Geza’s comments were considered treasonous, which led to the decision to expel him.
Marian Chombo, a ZANU PF central committee member and Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, as well as a member of the National Disciplinary Committee, urged Geza to publicly retract his comments and apologise before the committee takes action against him.

ZANU PF Mash West Recommends Expulsion Of War Veteran Blessed "Bombshell" Geza

ZAPU President Sibangilizwe Nkomo has warned that any attempt by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to extend his rule beyond 2028 will face strong resistance, reported <a href="https://cite.org.zw/zim-will-become-ungovernable-if-you-extend-stay-in-office-mnangagwa-warned/">CITE</a>.
While categorically rejecting support for a coup, Nkomo said ZAPU demands fair and transparent elections in 2028, adding that Mnangagwa must step down once his second and final term ends.
Speaking to journalists in Bulawayo, Nkomo condemned Mnangagwa’s efforts to prolong his presidency, labelling them as “the grandfather of all illegalities.” He said:

Mnangagwa sneaked into power on the back of a military coup in 2017 and now seeks to extend his rule by staging another coup against the constitution of Zimbabwe. It is a treasonous ambition that no patriotic Zimbabwean should entertain.

Nkomo asserted that since Zimbabwe gained independence from Britain in 1980, ZANU PF has consistently taken the country’s citizens for granted. He said:

Nkomo dismissed the ZANU PF national conference held in Bulawayo in October 2024, where delegates resolved to extend Mnangagwa’s presidential term from 2028 to 2030, declaring that only those who profit from death and suffering are advocating for such a move. He said:

At its 21st Annual National People’s Conference in Bulawayo in October 2024, ZANU PF resolved to extend Mnangagwa’s term by two years.
Addressing a ZANU PF Harare Youth inter-district meeting on Saturday, Harare Provincial Chairman Godwills Masimirembwa explained the plan to amend the Constitution to extend President Mnangagwa’s term. Said Masimirembwa (via <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/no-need-for-referendum-to-extend-presidential-term/">The Herald</a>):

After Parliament amends the Constitution by postponing the elections, it is not necessary to go for a Referendum. There will be no need for a Referendum. Parliament was directed to amend the Constitution in line with Resolution Number One.

He asserted that the proposed amendment aligns with Section 91(2) of the Constitution, which disqualifies anyone from running for president after serving two terms, with each term defined as three or more years. Said Masimirembwa:

The Referendum is only necessary if we interfere with the term limit provision, which is a three-year period. If the President serves less than three years, it’s not considered a full term. He falls within the term limit of the presidential term provision.

Masimirembwa argued that the proposed extension does not violate constitutional term limits, as it merely postpones the elections to 2030 without changing the two-term cap. He said:

This will be in line with the two-term limit of the President according to the country’s Constitution. He will be within the confines of the two-term limit. What is required is just to postpone the elections up to 2030.
There is no need to worry about interference with the term limit, so the party resolution is in tandem with the term limit provision.

At a press conference on Thursday at the Bulawayo Media Centre, ZPRA Veterans Association National Spokesperson Buster Magwizi voiced support for fellow war veterans who recently opposed the proposed extension of Mnangagwa’s term beyond 2028. Said Magwizi (via <a href="https://cite.org.zw/zpra-veterans-warn-of-instability-if-constitution-is-violated/">CITE</a>):

Our solidarity is not just a message of solidarity. It is an expanded contribution to political correctness.
The veterans who stood out in a press briefing last week led by Blessed Runesu Geza in Harare were very correct because no one else dares to advise the government correctly on what to do or the leadership on what is straight and what is crooked. We hold the sanctity of the constitution sacrosanct.

Magwizi criticized those who dismissed the veterans who spoke in Harare as “mad, crazy, and biased,” accusing them of seeking to benefit from corruption.
He was referring to Douglas Mahiya, the ZANU PF Secretary for War Veterans, Ex-Political Prisoners, Detainees, and Restrictees.
Mahiya argued that Geza’s sentiments did not represent the position of war veterans but were pushing a foreign agenda to cause disharmony within the party.
Deputy National Spokesperson for the ZPRA Veterans Association, Joakim Moyo, condemned the push for a third term, calling it fraudulent and a direct assault on the constitution. Said Moyo:

There has been a litany of injustices which make us sick as ZPRA veterans. We have always stood as people advocating for political correctness, and we are prepared to go down, dying doing the same thing.
We are a people who want to adhere to the Constitution as a national guide and live by it. The spirit and the flesh of it should be observed by everyone, regardless of size.
Probably let me get down to the constitution and say, we stand ready to defend the constitution of Zimbabwe, and would like to warn all those pushing the 2030 mantra that it is fraudulent.
The current constitution was arrived at as a nationally driven issue. Everybody was consulted and everybody spoke.
And our constitution observed the democratic principles that underlie what you call a democracy.

The ZPRA Veterans Association in Zimbabwe is warning that changing the Constitution to let President Mnangagwa have a third term could lead to serious consequences, like violence. ZPRA Veterans Warn Of Serious Consequences If Constitution Is Amended

Wicknell Chivayo has said he will not be intimidated or moved by threats from “failed politicians,” in what appears to be a response to Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.
Chiwenga who is acting in Mnangagwa’s absence on leave, recently warned corrupt individuals within the ruling ZANU PF party, accusing them of enriching themselves through ill-gotten gains.
He made these remarks at the burial of former Deputy Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Justin Mupamhanga, at the National Heroes Acre on Monday.
In his speech, Chiwenga referenced individuals who, during the liberation struggle, were known as “zvigananda,” a term used to describe people who had gained wealth through dishonest means.
Chiwenga said the founding principles of Zimbabwe were based on equal opportunities for all, not for those who profit from corruption and looting. He said:

We all swore to a shared future in which everyone had a place on the table, a place in the sun, for a culture of equal opportunity where every Zimbabwean served in equal measure.
Zveubvanzu ubvanzu kudya kwemhumi takazviramba. Our Vision 2030 is for all of us, kwete dzamunoti mbinga, kuhondo taizviti zvigananda, those who grow big tummies through ill-gotten wealth and questionable morals.
</blockquote>
Some interpreted this as a thinly veiled reference to Chivayo, who has been accused of amassing large sums from inflated state tenders.
In a statement posted on his social media pages on Wednesday, Chivayo responded, declaring that he would not be “moved by nor shaken by any veiled threats from failed politicians.” He wrote:

I will always support President E.D. Mnangagwa and ZANU PF’s vision, and no individual, Big or Small, can instill fear in me to decide otherwise. I will neither be moved by nor shaken by any veiled threats from failed politicians.

In the same statement, Chivayo also denied any involvement in a letter allegedly written by him, which reportedly requested local banks to permit him to withdraw up to US$20 million per month for various transactions.
In 2005, Chivayo was convicted of money laundering. He received a five-year prison sentence, with two years suspended. The case involved R837,000, which was part of the proceeds of a crime.

Chivayo Hits Back At VP Chiwenga, Calls Him "A Failed Politician"

Douglas Mahiya, the ZANU PF Secretary for War Veterans, Ex-Political Prisoners, Detainees, and Restrictees, has criticized ZANU PF Central Committee member and fellow war veteran Blessing Runesu Geza for opposing the party’s plans to amend the Constitution, which would allow President Emmerson Mnangagwa to run for a third term.
On Sunday, January 26, Geza, along with five other veterans, publicly called for Mnangagwa to step down, declaring that he was “not fit to run this country.”
The group also rejected any changes to the Constitution and dismissed Mnangagwa’s assurances that he had no intentions of staying in power beyond 2028.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zanu-pf-war-vets-stand-firm-on-conference-resolutions/">The Herald</a> in Harare on Tuesday, Mahiya dismissed their position as part of a “foreign agenda” aimed at sowing discord within the party. Said Mahiya:

ZANU PF will not listen to misguided elements. Cde Geza’s sentiments do not represent the position of war veterans. They are advancing the interests of their handlers, who are yet to be identified. This is a foreign agenda meant to cause disharmony within the party.
Once a decision is made at the conference or congress, war veterans cannot oppose it. The decision of the majority will stand.

Sengezo Tshabangu, the disputed interim Secretary General of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) and leader of the opposition in Parliament said that his party will oppose President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s attempt to extend his rule beyond the constitutional two-term limit.
This declaration comes just weeks after Tshabangu publicly supported Mnangagwa’s potential third term during a visit to the president’s Precabe farm in Sherwood, Kwekwe.
Tshabangu’s endorsement of ZANU PF’s proposal to amend the constitution to allow a third term for Mnangagwa sparked criticism from other opposition figures, who labelled him a traitor.
However, in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Nqobizitha Mlilo, after a meeting with Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda, Tshabangu took a different stance.
He expressed strong opposition to the proposed third term, calling it “repulsive and repugnant” and incompatible with Zimbabwe’s national aspirations. Said Mlilo:

It is unnecessarily divisive. We will oppose it. We suggested that the idea should be abandoned so as not to cause unnecessary national disharmony.

Mlilo said that Tshabangu’s meeting with the Speaker of Parliament was a proactive step to convey the party’s position on opposing the third-term bid, especially since the issue has yet to be presented in Parliament.
However, Tshabangu’s recent statement has been met with scepticism by some who question his sincerity.
Critics argue that without the support of State institutions, Tshabangu would not have been able to take control of the CCC, leading them to suggest that he may be indebted to ZANU PF.

ZANU PF’s factional disputes came to the forefront on Monday as supporters of President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his deputy, Constantino Chiwenga, clashed at the National Heroes Acre, reported <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/zanu-pf-factional-fights-explode-at-heroes-acre-chiwenga-denounces-corruption/">ZimLive</a>.
Chiwenga, acting as president during Mnangagwa’s annual leave, presided over the burial of Justin Mupamhanga, who was honoured as a national hero.
In the stands, Information Technology Minister Tatenda Mavetera, leading a group called Young Women 4 ED, rallied Mnangagwa’s supporters in song and dance, openly targeting Chiwenga.
They chanted, “mupanduki mupanduki chera mwena nguva yakwana (sellout sellout dig a hole, the time has come),” a direct jab at Chiwenga for his refusal to support Mnangagwa loyalists’ efforts to extend his presidency beyond 2028, the end of his second and final term.
Chiwenga’s supporters also made their voices heard, singing, “Siyanai naye Chiwenga munomuvengerei, siyanai naye Chiwenga (leave Chiwenga alone, why do you hate him, leave Chiwenga alone).”
They further chanted, “2030 tonosangana, tonosangana kuWedza (in 2030 we will meet in Wedza),” referencing Chiwenga’s rural home in Mashonaland East.
Chiwenga’s supporters argue that the push against him is fueled by the greed of Mnangagwa’s faction, who have allegedly enriched themselves by looting state resources and are reluctant to relinquish power.
In his address, Chiwenga reiterated his commitment to tackling corruption, as he has in previous speeches. He said:

Zimbabwe belongs to all of us. We must share its God-given bounty, share its bounty equally so no one – not even the weak, the widowed or the orphaned are displaced or elbowed out by the strong in a mad rat race to grab unmerited privileges. Corruption has to end.
Our Vision 2030 is for all of us, not those that you call mbinga (corrupt tenderpreneurs). During the war, we referred to them as zvigananda (leeches): those who grow big tummies through ill-gotten wealth and questionable morals!

Mnangagwa became President in late 2017 and completed Mugabe’s term in 2018, after which he was elected for his first full term.

There are some people who are saying President Mnangagwa said he wants to rest. Yes, he said so. But, let me say this, President Mnangagwa is not the one pushing for his stay in office beyond 2028. It is a resolution from the people.
If the voice of the people is the voice of God, then as a people, we are saying God is speaking to his people and the people are pleading with the President to stay in office beyond 2028.
So, to leaders here present, let this information be spread to the cell level. Let everyone know that one of the resolutions during the (ZANU PF) Conference held in Bulawayo was that President Mnangagwa should stay in office until 2030.
So, we are saying Vision 2030 is unstoppable and will be fulfilled with President Mnangagwa in office. No one will stop it.

We ask him to go peacefully. If he refuses to take heed of this advice, we have no option but to ask the no people of Zimbabwe to deal with a rogue president in line with the constitution.

War veteran Knox Chivero, speaking after Geza, declared that it is Mnangagwa’s time to leave “peacefully or otherwise.”
The war veterans vowed to oppose any changes to the Constitution and dismissed Mnangagwa’s claims that he had no ambition to stay in power beyond 2028. 
Geza warned that such plans would “throw the country into disquiet.” He added:

How do you claim not to be involved when your ministers appointed under your hand issue statements in support of this illegal and treacherous 2030 agenda?
Emmerson Mnangagwa on assumption of power showed that he was a man who had learned nothing… instead of correcting the mistakes of Robert Mugabe, he went about proving to all of us that Mugabe was actually a saint.

According to Geza, Mnangagwa has “systematically targeted and purged war veterans in various arms of government and replaced them with crooks.”
Geza fumed that the president’s cabinet is filled with ministers “who either belong to his clan or are benefactors to his family through his children.” He added:

Since assuming power, Mnangagwa has neglected civil servants who are now earning slave wages. Our men and women in uniform have lost their dignity even in the eyes of the public due to state-sponsored poverty.

Geza claimed that the rising frequency of deaths of ex-generals was suspicious, adding that they believe the deaths are “linked to Mnangagwa’s blue-eyed boy Owen Mudha Ncube.”
Owen Ncube is the Gokwe-Kana MP, the Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister, and also the former Minister of State for National Security.

A group of war veterans want President Emmerson Mnangagwa to step down. They say he is not a good leader for Zimbabwe. They say Mnangagwa has failed and should leave peacefully. They are worried about changes to the Constitution that would keep him in power longer. They also think Mnangagwa is getting rid of good people and putting his friends in power. The war veterans are unhappy with how things are going in the country and want Mnangagwa to go.

War Veterans Demand Mnangagwa's Resignation

Information Minister Jenfan Muswere said extending President Mnangagwa’s term beyond 2028 is a rightful obligation for Parliament and other stakeholders.
In a statement on Wednesday, 22 January, Muswere criticized the Zimbabwe Heads of Christian Denominations (ZHOCD) for opposing the Presidential Term Limit Extension.
On Tuesday, the ZHOCD warned that extending Mnangagwa’s term would amount to a coup against the constitution.
Muswere claimed ZHOCD consists of donor-funded individuals pretending to represent the Church in Zimbabwe.
He reminded Christian leaders that ZANU PF is the political establishment that delivered freedom of expression and religion. The statement reads:

The politically broad-based call to extend the Presidential term of office beyond 2028 remains a rightful and unquestionable obligation for Parliament, the Party of Zimbabwe’s permanent national democratic revolution -ZANU PF and other legitimate political stakeholders to this matter.
Parliamentarians from the cross-sectional divide of political parties represent the views and interests of their electorate.
Submissions by Honourable Members of Parliament reflect the aspirations of those who voted the constituencies they were elected to serve.
The Parliament is not answerable to narrow, sectoral and regime- change donor funding antics by a paltry conglomerate of civil society entrepreneurs purporting to represent the views of the Church in Zimbabwe.
In the same vein, such Western donor organisations need not to be reminded that ZANU PF is a political establishment which delivered freedom of expression and freedom of religion among many other rights we all enjoy today.
Likewise, the ZANU PF-led Government still ferociously defends freedom of worship for all Zimbabweans most of which are not affiliated to the Zimbabwe Heads of Christian Denominations (ZHCD) outfit.
However, it is crucial for ZANU PF’s godly existential values not to be abused by minority entities and individuals bent on misrepresenting the cordial relationship which the state and the church enjoy.
The proposal to move a motion on the Presidential Term Limit Extension will follow the provisions of the law.
It must be emphasized that the Constitution will remain centrifugal throughout this process with no iota of infractions.

The Minister of Information, Jenfan Muswere, says it's important for President Mnangagwa's rule to be extended beyond 2028. He criticized church leaders for speaking out against this. Muswere Castigates Church Leaders For Opposing The Extension Of Mnangagwa's Term

The Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiZC) has vowed to challenge ZANU PF’s push to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term of office and possibly postpone general elections from 2028 to 2033.
Mnangagwa’s second term ends in 2028. He has said he does not intend to stay in power beyond his tenure but did not stop his party from passing a resolution to extend his time in office.
ZANU PF is planning constitutional amendments to extend Mnangagwa’s rule beyond the two-term limit.
The CiZC held a meeting on Wednesday with participants from various sectors, including labour, the church, business, parliamentarians, war veterans, political parties, students, women, and youth organizations. CiZC said in a statement:

The primary objective of the meeting was to devise a comprehensive, collective strategy aimed at resisting the erosion of constitutional norms and protecting democratic governance against the backdrop of proposed amendments that threaten to entrench authoritarian rule.
The participants reached a clear and unanimous consensus regarding the proposed constitutional amendments aimed at removing presidential term limits. The participants firmly argued that such changes would significantly undermine the spirit and collective will of the Zimbabwean populace.
The meeting explicitly rejected these amendments, characterizing them as self-serving manoeuvres orchestrated by a small clique of politicians pursuing personal ambitions over the broader interests of the nation. This clique’s pursuit of power, they noted, undermines the very foundation of Zimbabwe’s democracy.
Furthermore, the meeting underscored that these proposed amendments, fundamentally contradict the democratic principles enunciated in the country’s constitution.
The meeting expressed concern that enacting such changes would exacerbate the lingering legitimacy crisis leading to increased international isolation and a further decline in the country’s global standing.

The participants tasked CiZC with building an inclusive movement from all sectors of society to defend democratic space and resist the proposed constitutional amendment.
This aims to unite various stakeholders, including the media, diplomats, community mobilizers, and rapid response teams, to empower ordinary Zimbabweans to engage in this cause.
The meeting also resolved to organize a national all-stakeholders convention to prepare for a united response, specifically a collective Vote NO if a referendum is called regarding any constitutional changes.

Crisis Coalition Vows To Challenge ZANU PF's Push To Extend Mnangagwa's Rule

Sengezo Tshabangu, the self-styled interim secretary-general of CCC, has refiled his appeal with the Supreme Court after temporarily withdrawing it due to a procedural mistake.
Tshabangu is appealing a judgment made by Justice Neville Wamambo on January 8, 2024, in case HCH 5606/24.
The judge concluded that Tshabangu did not have the authority to reassign Members of Parliament to different committees.
The judgment also invalidated the appointment of Nonhlanhla Mlotshwa as the party’s Chief Whip in Parliament, declaring it unlawful.
In a joint statement on Monday, Tshabangu and Mlotshwa explained that they withdrew their initial appeal due to a clerical error in the service address, which has now been corrected. The statement reads:

Senator Tshabangu and Senator Mlotshwa confirm that their previously served and filed notice of appeal in respect of Harare High Court case number 5606/24 was withdrawn, with the customary tendering of the wasted costs so occasioned.

Tshabangu’s new appeal argues that the lower court failed to recognize the constitutional nature of the matter, which falls outside its jurisdiction.
He says the court did not comply with the mandatory provisions of Rule 107 of the High Court Rules 2021.
Tshabangu contends that the judge misinterpreted Section 151 of the Constitution, ruling that members of the Parliamentary Committee on Standing Rules and Orders are appointed for the life of each Parliament.
He argues that Lynette Karenyi, Sesel Zwidzai, and Edwin Mushoriwa were not part of the committee’s original composition and were not entitled to hold the disputed positions.
Tshabangu asserts that the High Court wrongly concluded that his actions, along with those of the Speaker of Parliament, in reshuffling parliamentary positions amounted to a recall under Section 129(1)(k).
He said the court incorrectly determined that the position of Chief Whip is not recognized by law, making Mlotshwa’s appointment unlawful.
Tshabangu contends that these findings are erroneous and unsupported by the legal framework governing parliamentary appointments.

Sengezo Tshabangu has re-filed his appeal in the Supreme Court after withdrawing it before. He is fighting a judgment that said he can't move MPs to different committees. The judgment also said Nonhlanhla Mlotshwa's appointment as Chief Whip was wrong. Tshabangu and Mlotshwa withdrew their appeal before because of a small mistake, but now they fixed it. Tshabangu argues that the lower court didn't understand the constitutional issues and misinterpreted the law. He says the court was wrong about who should be in certain positions in Parliament.

Tshabangu Refiles Supreme Court Appeal After Initial Withdrawal

Sengezo Tshabangu, the self-styled CCC interim secretary-general, accused Welshman Ncube of influencing his lawyers to abandon him before a Supreme Court appeal on Monday.
Tshabangu had filed the appeal against a High Court ruling that nullified his parliamentary appointments, challenged by Ncube and his faction.
He was represented by lawyers from Ncube Attorneys, linked to Welshman Ncube.
According to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200037259/welshman-tshabangu-feud-escalates">NewsDay</a> sources, Tshabangu learned of the lawyers’ withdrawal just as the case was about to be heard. As a result, he withdrew his appeal on Monday.
However, Tshabangu filed a new appeal the same day after hiring Thompson James Mabhikwa and Partners.
On Monday, Tshabangu’s spokesperson, Nqobizitha Mlilo, said the lawyers abandoned him under “unusual circumstances.”
He claimed that some respondents applied intense pressure on Tshabangu’s lawyers to create a legal representation vacuum.
Ncube-led CCC spokesperson Willias Madzimure denied any involvement in the lawyer’s withdrawal, saying the party was confident in its case against Tshabangu.

Sengezo Tshabangu and Welshman Ncube are fighting over parliamentary appointments in court. Tshabangu's lawyers left him before the court appeal, which upset him. He got new lawyers and refiled the appeal. Tshabangu's spokesperson said someone made his lawyers leave on purpose. Ncube's party denied any involvement and believes they will win the case. Ncube, Tshabangu Feud Escalates Amid Lawyer Withdrawal And Supreme Court Appeal

The Zimbabwe Heads of Christian Denominations (ZHOCD) has raised concerns over recent comments by some Members of Parliament and political activists calling for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to extend his term beyond 2028.
The ZHOCD warned that such actions would amount to a coup against the constitution.
In a statement released on Tuesday, January 21, the ZHOCD urged Mnangagwa to resist these calls and the temptation to extend presidential term limits, saying doing so would not serve the best interests of the country. The statement reads in part:

The call to extend the Presidential Term Limits and postpone the 2028 elections is an invitation for the President to be a coconspirator in overthrowing the Constitution of the Country which the President is elected to uphold, respect and defend.
The Church takes relief from the consistent remarks made by His Excellency on several occasions where he has repeatedly affirmed his commitment to uphold the Constitution of Zimbabwe by committing not to extend his Presidency beyond the Constitutional and legal limits.
The President’s pronouncements have always been clear and a significant step towards reinforcing the gains of the liberation struggle, good governance, democratic norms and promoting national peace and unity.
We believe His Excellency intends to remain true to his oath to uphold, defend and respect both the Constitution and the Law in letter and spirit.

The ZHOCD reiterated its call for President Mnangagwa to uphold the constitutional term limits and support a peaceful transition of power in 2028, following free, fair, and credible elections.
The group warned that the proposal to extend presidential term limits could severely undermine public trust in Zimbabwe’s electoral processes and destabilize the country, especially at a time when unity and peace are crucial for economic and social transformation.
In response to these concerns, the ZHOCD urged the President to respect the Constitution and ensure that elections are held in 2028, facilitating a smooth transition of power.
The ZHOCD also called on all Zimbabweans to unite in support of the country’s constitutional integrity and prioritize the nation’s well-being.
Further, the group called for the Government to implement necessary electoral reforms and promote multi-party democracy in preparation for the 2028 elections.
The churches urged Members of Parliament to strengthen constitutionalism by fulfilling their oversight role, ensuring that the Executive respects and defends the Constitution, including adherence to presidential term limits.
The ZHOCD also urged all political parties to commit to upholding the Constitution and laws of Zimbabwe.

Christian Leaders Warn Mnangagwa Term Extension Would Be A Constitutional Coup

ZANU PF and the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) will share ZiG$170 million this year, allocated by the Treasury in the National Budget to fund political parties meeting the required voter threshold under the Political Parties Finance Act.
The funds will be distributed based on the number of seats each party holds in the National Assembly. As ZANU PF holds a two-thirds majority, it will receive the largest share of the ZiG$170 million.
In the August 2023 general election, ZANU PF won 137 geographical constituencies, while CCC secured 73. Consequently, ZANU PF will receive the bulk of the funds.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zanu-pf-ccc-to-share-zig170-million/">The Herald</a>, ZANU PF director of information and publicity, Farai Marapira, said that the funds will be used to pay party employees, among other needs. He said:

As ZANU PF we appreciate these funds as they enable us to rejuvenate and revamp our party. As a party with structures, these funds assist us in getting feedback from our grassroots as well as communicating leadership positions. We have offices and officers and attendant office bills that need to be paid and these funds go a long way in ensuring this happens.

Nqobizitha Mlilo, spokesperson for CCC faction leader Sengezo Tshabangu, said that while the opposition appreciates the funds disbursed under the Political Parties Finance Act, they will provide substantive comments once the money has been released to them.

Zimbabwe's government is giving ZANU PF and CCC parties ZiG$170 million. ZANU PF will get more money because they won the most seats in the election. The money will be used to pay party workers and cover other costs. ZANU PF is happy to get the money to help their party grow. The CCC party is waiting to get the money before saying more. Both parties are happy to receive funds to support their activities.

Treasury Allocates ZiG$170 Million To ZANU PF And CCC

Sengezo Tshabangu on Monday, 20 January, withdrew his Supreme Court appeal against a High Court judgment nullifying his changes to the CCC leadership structure in parliament.
The parties met at the Supreme Court on Monday to hear the appeal, but Tshabangu tendered a notice of withdrawal.
The reason for his withdrawal remains unclear, but the High Court’s decision now stands.
The High Court recently ordered Tshabangu to stop the recalls, ruling he was in breach of an existing judgment.
This ruling followed an urgent application by Welshman Ncube, leader of another CCC faction, who argued that Tshabangu lacked the authority to reassign MPs.
Justice Neville Wamambo agreed with Ncube, stating that Tshabangu’s decision to remove Lynette Karenyi-Kore, Sessel Zvidzai, and Edwin Mushoriwa from the parliamentary Committee on Standing Rules and Orders (CSRO) amounted to recalls.
The judge also ruled the position of opposition chief whip, to which Nonhlanhla Mlotshwa was appointed by Tshabangu, did not exist under Zimbabwe’s constitution.
Following this development, the Ncube-led CCC announced on Monday that reshuffled members would return to their original positions.
In October 2023, a CCC faction, not the one led by Ncube, filed a court application arguing that Tshabangu was an imposter with no authority to make recalls. That case is pending.
Justice Tawanda Chitapi granted an order interdicting Tshabangu from making further recalls until the main matter’s determination on his legal basis to initiate recalls. This order underpinned the present application by Ncube’s faction.

Sengezo Tshabangu withdrew his appeal at the Supreme Court. The High Court's decision against him remains. Tshabangu was told to stop making changes to the CCC leadership. Another faction's leader argued Tshabangu couldn't reassign MPs. The judge agreed, saying Tshabangu's actions were recalls. The opposition chief whip position wasn't valid under Zimbabwe's law. The Ncube-led CCC said reshuffled members will go back to their old jobs. Another faction also argued Tshabangu had no right to make recalls. Tshabangu can't make recalls until a court decides if he can.

Tshabangu Withdraws Supreme Court Appeal

Opposition politicians and activists remember the late ZANU PF official and Cabinet minister, Chenhamo Chekazhe Chen Chimutengwende, for his alleged role in orchestrating violence during the contentious 2000 election period.
Chimutengwende, who passed away last Thursday at the age of 81 after a prolonged battle with kidney disease, was declared a national hero.
However, opposition politician Elliot Pfebve claimed that Chimutengwende was involved in a violent attack on MDC supporters in Mashonaland Central province during the intense 2000 election campaign.
Pfebve alleged that ZANU PF supporters, wearing campaign T-shirts emblazoned with the slogan “Wako Ndewako Che,” attacked a rally, armed with machetes, knobkerries, and iron bars. Said Pfebve (via <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200037186/chimutengwendes-dark-past-revealed">NewsDay</a>):

They started attacking indiscriminately, even the police were surprised and caught unaware.
I immediately pulled my licensed pistol to scare them and save the defenceless people under attack.
The police asked me to fire in the air, which worked, scattering the attackers.

Pfebve said that the violence left dozens injured, prompting his team to transport the victims to Howard Hospital in Chiweshe for treatment.
He alleged that the attack had been premeditated the day before when Chimutengwende reportedly gave ZANU PF youths Z$7,000 to disrupt the MDC rally.
Following the incident, eight ZANU PF supporters were arrested and appeared in court on February 23, 2000.
However, Pfebve claimed that Chimutengwende, along with other senior officials such as the late Border Gezi, interfered with the judicial process.
The suspects, including Chimutengwende’s brother, were granted bail and never prosecuted. From then on, ZANU PF activists allegedly began targeting the opposition with impunity.
Chimutengwende was a prominent figure in Zimbabwean politics, known for his eloquence and his contributions to the liberation struggle.
He began his political career at age 14 in Highfield, Harare, and in 1963 became secretary for information and publicity in the ZANU PF Youth League. He completed his military training in Ghana in 1964.
After Zimbabwe’s independence, he was appointed ZANU PF provincial chairperson for Mashonaland Central in 1986, a position he held for 17 years.
Chimutengwende served in various government roles for 14 years and was a member of parliament for 23 years until 2008.
He held ministerial positions in the Ministry of Information, Posts and Telecommunications; Ministry of Environment and Tourism; and the Ministry of Public and Interactive Affairs in the Office of the President and Cabinet.
Despite his long political career, Chimutengwende’s legacy remains highly divisive. Allegations of his involvement in suppressing opposition voices and benefiting from controversial government programs overshadow his accomplishments.
In July 2020, Chimutengwende was listed in the BSR (Big Saturday Read by Alex Magaisa) of 18 July 2020 as a beneficiary of the 2007 RBZ Farm Mechanisation Scheme, part of the Fast Track Land Reform Programme.
According to the report, he received a loan of US$98,780 under the controversial scheme, which was never repaid, and the burden was ultimately passed on to taxpayers.
