Marry Chiwenga's Condition Deteriorates - Mtetwa
Marry Mubaiwa-Chiwenga’s health condition has continued to deteriorate, her lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa told the court on Thursday when she appeared before Justice Benjamin Chikowero.
Mtetwa made the remarks while praying for the relaxation of her client’s bail conditions so that she can seek medical attention from South Africa.
The former model is suffering from lymphoedema, which has caused swelling of her arms and legs including severe puss dripping wounds which are giving her sleepless nights because of pain.
She is, however, unable to seek medication from South Africa as the state has her passport as part of her bail conditions in a case she is accused of money-laundering, attempted murder and assaulting a family maid. Mtetwa told the court:
Her wounds have worsened and we can bring her to court so that you can have sight of her wounds. They are also on her thighs, but she can’t show them to the public.
It’s so difficult that she has to move around with a machine that drains liquids and puss from the wounds and a container which collects the discharge.
Following her submission, Justice Chikowero demanded that Marry be brought to court for him to see the wounds physically.
The state is afraid that Marry might abscond because she has links in South Africa. Meanwhile, the state has since written to the health permanent secretary to confirm whether she can have treatment in Zimbabwe or not.
Mtetwa told the court that the state should not be worried because Zimbabwe has Extradition Treaty with South Africa.
She also said that the fact that Marry’s husband with whom she is locked in a nasty divorce is the minister of Health means that the permanent secretary cannot give an independent opinion especially when he has not examined the applicant.
Mtetwa added that Marry was already receiving treatment from South Africa when she was arrested adding that a local health practitioner confirmed that Zimbabwe had no specialists to treat her condition.
