A Harare woman, Plaxedes Taoneyi, won US$20,000 in damages against her husband’s mistress, Enery Madzima, at the High Court, reported <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/woman-wins-us20-000-adultery-damages/">The Herald</a>.
Taoneyi, married to Kudakwashe Taoneyi since 2005, had her life turned upside down when she discovered his affair with Madzima.
The relationship began under the guise of business dealings when Madzima became a client of their family business.
Over time, from phone calls and meetings to church encounters and family interactions, the affair became increasingly evident.
In December 2022, Taoneyi discovered a WhatsApp status posted by Madzima, showing her husband holding Madzima’s hand, alongside a caption thanking him for a birthday gift.
Taoneyi described in court the devastating impact this affair had on her life. She said she once enjoyed her husband’s love, companionship, and support, but now finds herself neglected and emotionally abused.
She said her husband no longer provided the same care for their children and openly boasted about his relationship with Madzima, even claiming to be “waiting to move on” once the legal proceedings were over.
Taoneyi recounted the humiliation she suffered in her church community, where she and her husband were once respected leaders.
She claimed the affair led to their demotion from leadership roles and tarnished their reputation among congregants.
In her workplace and social circles, where she and her husband were seen as a model couple, she now faces pity and judgment.
Madzima allegedly publicly flaunted her relationship with Kudakwashe, posting compromising photos and creating scenes that invaded Taoneyi’s privacy and dignity.
On one occasion, Madzima went to Taoneyi’s home, shouting obscenities and banging on the gate, drawing a mob of onlookers.
She also filed a false assault complaint against Taoneyi, dragging her through the courts for months before the case was dismissed.
Despite the overwhelming evidence, in court Madzima attempted to deny knowledge of Kudakwashe’s marriage, claiming he had presented himself as a divorcee.
However, her version of events was riddled with inconsistencies and implausible explanations.
Justice Emelia Muchawa found her to be an unreliable witness, noting her attempts to manipulate the truth and shift blame.
The court determined that Madzima was fully aware of Kudakwashe’s marriage at the time of their relationship and continued the affair with no regard for the consequences.
In her ruling, Justice Muchawa articulated the importance of protecting the institution of marriage. She said:

There can be no doubt that in this case there was infringement of the plaintiff’s privacy, dignity and reputation.
It is also clear that the plaintiff is a well-respected woman in her family, workplace, community and church. Her good standing was tarnished by the defendant’s conduct.
Defendant’s character of violence where one has the foolhardiness to go to the home of a woman whose husband she is in an affair with, leaves a lot to be desired.
She even had the guts to report the same woman for an assault, harassing her further in the process for a good six months.

Justice Muchawa explained that adultery damages uphold the sanctity of this unique contract between two individuals.
Taoneyi was awarded US$10,000 for the loss of consortium, representing the loss of love, companionship, and support.
She also received US$10,000 for contumelia, which addresses the violation of her dignity, privacy, and reputation.
The court considered several factors in determining the award, including Madzima’s lack of remorse, her disruptive conduct, and the need for deterrent measures to prevent similar actions in the future.

Harare Woman Wins US$20 000 In Damages Against Husband's Mistress

A 50-year-old villager from Chiguhune in Gutu was allegedly caught having sex with his daughter on many occasions. He is believed to be the biological father of her two kids.
The matter was reported to the Zimbabwe Gender Commission (ZGC) and Police late last year. Villagers are worried about the slow pace of the investigations.
ZGC CEO, Virginia Muwanigwa, told <a href="https://masvingomirror.com/gutu-man-sires-2-kids-with-own-daughter/">The Mirror</a> she can only comment after being updated by the investigating officer.
The abused daughter, now 25 years old, has been taken to a relative’s house where she stays alone with her two kids.
Her two young sisters, witnesses to the case, were also removed from home for fear of physical abuse by their violent father.
The case happened in Chawira Village. The Mirror reported they cannot disclose the father’s name to protect the abused girl’s identity.
Villagers complained that the two witnesses, both in form four, have not returned home to start school since it opened this week.
They urged the Police and ZGC to speed up investigations so the children’s lives could return to normal.
Shamwari Yemwanasikana director, Ekenia Chifamba, said it was improper for the abused girl and her sisters to stay with relatives.
She said the Department of Social Welfare should take over the case and find safe places for the children to live. Chifamba said:

I am rather put aback by the fact that these children have been given to relatives to take care of them. The Department of Social Welfare should have taken over such a case because they are qualified to deal with such matters. The abused girl and even her little sisters may end up with health issues.

The accused father denied the allegations in a telephone interview with The Mirror. However, village head Patrick Madziva confirmed the case and said the girl had been abused since she was 16. She now has two children aged eight and four years old. Madziva said:

Yes, the girl was abused since she was 16 years. Her little sisters are in hiding because of fear of the father who is known for being violent.
</blockquote>
Madziva said the issue was the talk of the community, and a report to the local Police post yielded nothing.
The accused’s elder brother also confirmed the case to The Mirror, saying it was a family decision to remove the abused girl from home after incessant reports of the rape.
The accused’s wife also told The Mirror that she found her husband sleeping with the girl on several occasions.

Gutu Man Accused Of Abusing Daughter And Fathering Her Two Children

A 53-year-old Zimbabwean national was expected to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court in South Africa on Monday. He is accused of possessing explosives.
The Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (Hawks) said the man was arrested at the Beitbridge Port of Entry on January 17, 2025. Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa said:

53-Year-Old Zimbabwean Arrested By South Africa's Hawks For Possessing Explosives

A Member of Parliament for the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), Maureen Kademaunga, and a Harare City Councillor from the same party, Clayd Mashozhera, have been acquitted of attempted murder charges after being on remand since 2023, reported <a href="https://www.thestandard.co.zw/news/article/200037153/attempted-murder-accused-ccc-mp-councillor-set-free">The Standard</a>.
The two were acquitted by Harare Magistrate Estere Chivasa on Friday.
Kademaunga, the Sunningdale MP, and Mashozhera, the Ward 10 councillor, were facing charges alongside two residents, Noel Munhuweyi and Daudi Kharim Jessub.
They were charged with three counts of attempted murder and malicious damage to property under various sections of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
The complainants in the case were Cyril Nyauchi, Artwell Marwa, and Spencer Mudarikwa, all members of ZANU PF.
Prosecutors alleged that Nyauchi and Marwa were assaulted by CCC members while distributing food to ruling party election agents at polling stations in Sunningdale between August 23 and 24, 2023.
The complainants were reportedly travelling in a Toyota Spacio when they were allegedly blocked by the accused and 10 others at the intersection of Seke and Boshoff Roads in Sunningdale.
The CCC members were said to have been in a convoy consisting of various vehicles, including a Toyota Noah, Toyota Mark X, commuter omnibus, Honda Fit, and two other vehicles.
While Jessub and others allegedly disembarked and attacked the complainants, Kademaunga, Mashozhera, and Munhuweyi remained in their cars.
The CCC members were accused of shattering the windows of the complainants’ vehicle and assaulting Nyauchi with truncheons, iron bars, small axes, and sjamboks, leaving him with severe injuries.
In addition to the attempted murder charges, the accused were also charged with malicious damage to property, with prosecutors alleging that the complainants lost property valued at US$15,600, including tyres, a fuel jerry can, and mobile phones, during the incident.
Magistrate Chivasa acquitted Kademaunga and her co-accused at the close of the prosecution’s case.
Their lawyers, Tapiwa Muchineripi and Harrison Nkomo of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, argued that there was no evidence linking the accused to the alleged crimes.

A Member of Parliament and a City Councillor from the CCC party were accused of attempted murder and damaging property but were found not guilty by a judge. CCC MP, Councillor Found Not Guilty In Attempted Murder Case

A 36-year-old woman from Chikanga, Mutare, has been fined US$400 by the Mutare Magistrates’ Court for abusing the civil servants’ rebate scheme.
Lornah Bhobho, a pharmacist employed by the Ministry of Health and Child Care, was charged with fraud.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the incident occurred in March 2023 when Bhobho purchased a Toyota Aqua in her name without applying to import the vehicle through the civil servants rebate facility.
She then created a fraudulent rebate letter with a fake ZIMRA reference, falsely claiming authorization from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development to import the vehicle duty-free.
The fraudulent rebate letter caused the state to lose potential revenue amounting to ZWL$4,264,625.17.
Bhobho was fined US$400, with a two-month imprisonment sentence in default of payment.
The Civil Servants Rebate Scheme is a government initiative that allows eligible civil servants to import motor vehicles at a reduced duty rate.
The scheme aims to improve the conditions of service for civil servants by providing them with a non-monetary benefit.
Civil servants who have served at least 10 years in the public service (or 2 years for health sector employees) are eligible. There are no restrictions for doctors.
The imported vehicle must be less than 10 years old from the date of manufacture.
Civil servants need to submit various documents, including a signed application letter, vehicle details, a letter from their Permanent Secretary, a recommendation letter from the Public Service Commission, and proof of employment.
The rebate amount varies based on the civil servant’s grade, with maximum thresholds set for different grades.
The scheme has been extended to members of service commissions and other qualifying civil servants.

According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Ncube is facing two counts of murder after allegedly shooting his wife, Nyengeterai Chakauya (42), and his cousin, Canaan Shumba, with a Star Pistol following an argument.
The incident occurred on Thursday at Nyimo Business Centre in Sanyati. Police have confirmed the details of the case:

Sanyati Businessman Allegedly Kills Wife And Cousin Over Infidelity

Moses Mpofu and Mike Chimombe have said they intend to appeal to the Supreme Court against a High Court ruling that dismissed their application for bail pending appeal.
The duo is accused of siphoning US$7 million from the Presidential Goat Pass-On Scheme.
On Thursday, January 16, High Court judge Justice Pisirayi Kwenda rejected their bail application, citing the seriousness of the offense, which could result in a 20-year prison sentence if they are convicted.
He argued that such a severe penalty could easily motivate the accused to abscond from the trial, regardless of any surety offered.
Mpofu and Chimombe had attempted to assure the court of their commitment to stand trial by offering title deeds to property and surrendering their passports. 
However, the court deemed these measures inadequate, highlighting the risks of interference and non-attendance of the trial as outweighing the value of such sureties.
Through their lawyers, Chimombe and Mpofu expressed their dissatisfaction with the ruling and disagreed with Justice Kwenda’s reasoning in denying them bail.
Lovemore Madhuku, representing Chimombe, said they were disappointed by the outcome and did not agree with the judge’s reasoning. He added:

Our clients have a right to appeal to the Supreme Court and we have been given instructions to do so, so we will be appealing as soon as we get the full judgment.
</blockquote>
Chimombe and Mpofu have been in prison since June 2024, following their arrest, with multiple bail applications rejected by both the Magistrates’ and High Courts.
Their trial is scheduled to begin on February 10 and will proceed on a continuous roll.

Mike Chimombe And Moses Mpofu Denied Bail, Again

The Civil Vehicle Registry (CVR) has issued a warning about a fraudster posing as an employee of the Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID) in Eastlea, Harare.
In a statement, the CVR revealed that the suspect has been sending text messages to prospective drivers, informing them that their licences are ready for collection and requesting a payment of US$50.
Victims are then instructed to send the money via EcoCash or OneMoney. After the payment is made, the fraudster blocks all communication, leaving the victims without their licences or a way to contact the individual. Said the CVR:

It has come to the attention of the Central Vehicle Registry (CVR) that a fraudster with the following Econet numbers — 0779 171 199 and 0783 123 505 — is sending text messages to prospective drivers advising them that their driver’s licences are ready for collection.
He interchanges the following names – Mr Moyo, Mr Sibanda, Mr Nkomo or Mr Dube from VID Eastlea.
Once the victims arrive in Harare, he directs them to deposit US$50 into either OneMoney, whose details are 0715 107 676 or 0715 107 468 and Ecocash 0786 721 613.
Once the money is deposited, he then blocks the victim. The public has been urged to be vigilant and report such incidents to the nearest police station.
Secondly, do not deposit any money into an account provided by a stranger. Report to the nearest police station if you are texted by any of the above listed numbers to help the Zimbabwe Republic Police to apprehend the fraudsters.

Fraudster Impersonates VID Staff, Demands Payment From Prospective Drivers

Two police officers stationed in Mutare, Dudzai Jennifer Chiponda (47) and Glynislynn Mutsago (38), have been arrested for allegedly soliciting a bribe from a pirate taxi driver and then attempting to flee from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) officers.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the incident occurred on January 07, 2025. Chiponda and Mutsago arrested an illegal taxi driver for operating in the Mutare Central Business District and demanded a bribe of US$90 to release the vehicle.
The driver pleaded that he did not have the required amount and requested to go to his employer’s residence to collect the money.
Under this pretext, the driver drove to the ZACC offices, parked outside the gate, and entered the premises, leaving the accused officers waiting under a tree across the road.
The driver then reported the matter to ZACC officials, who set a trap. However, the police officers had already disappeared from the area.
The driver, accompanied by a ZACC investigation officer posing as his employer, returned to the CBD, where Chiponda and Mutsago approached and entered the vehicle. They accused the driver of deceiving them and insisted on their demand.
The ZACC investigation officer successfully negotiated for the bribe amount to be reduced to US$20. The two police officers then instructed the driver to drive towards the civic centre, where they followed to collect the bribe.
When ZACC reinforcement approached, Chiponda and Mutsago dropped the money and attempted to flee, but they were quickly apprehended.
The two police officers were granted bail and are scheduled to appear in court again on January 25, 2025, to face charges related to the attempted bribery.

ZACC Arrests Two Police Officers Demanding Bribe From Pirate Taxi Driver

Police in Harare have arrested a “street kid” named Godknows Chataika, who allegedly killed a passerby in the central business district.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Chataika snatched the victim’s cellphone, identified as Kivo Muzari (24), before shoving him.
Muzari fell and hit the tarmac with his head, succumbing to the head injury. The ZRP said:

The ZRP confirms the arrest of Godknows Chataika in connection with a case of murder which occurred at the corner of Kwame Nkurumah Street and Chinhoyi Street, Harare on 15/01/25 in which Kivo Muzari (24) died.
The suspect, who is a street kid, allegedly snatched the victim’s cellphone before pushing him. Resultantly, the victim fell and hit the tarmac with the head. The victim succumbed to the head injury.

Meanwhile, the police are appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of three other suspects only identified as Witty, Maken and Kedha, who are being sought in connection with this case.

Police Arrest "Street Kid" For Allegedly Killing Passerby In Harare CBD

A 30-year-old man from Mwenezi, Masvingo Province, is facing charges of murder and attempted murder after he fatally assaulted his wife and injured his mother-in-law in a fit of rage on Sunday.
The suspect, Trust Bhonde, is currently in police custody following the violent incident involving his wife, Nollen Rivete (27), and his mother-in-law, Manyuke Sasai (50).
According to a statement from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Bhonde set fire to a hut where his wife and mother-in-law were sleeping in Sikomo Village, Mwenezi.
When the two women managed to escape the flames, Bhonde struck his mother-in-law on the head with a hoe before attacking his wife multiple times.
Rivete suffered severe head injuries and later died, while Sasai also sustained head injuries and lost consciousness. Reads the Police statement:

The ZRP confirms the arrest of Trust Bhonde (30) in connection with a case of murder and attempted murder which occurred at Sikomo Village, Mwenezi on 12/01/25 in which his wife, Nollen Rivete (27) died.
The suspect allegedly set a kitchen hut ablaze in which the victim and his mother in-law, Manyuke Sasai (50) were sleeping in.
Subsequently, the suspect went on to strike his mother in-law on the head with a hoe before hitting his wife several times on the head as they escaped from the burning hut.
Resultantly, Manyuke Sasai sustained head injuries and became unconscious while Nollen Rivete sustained head injuries and succumbed to the injuries.

In a separate case, Police in Budiriro are investigating the murder of an unidentified adult male whose body was found floating in a stream in Budiriro, Harare on Tuesday.
The victim had bruises on his back and thighs, and was wearing a pair of blue jeans, a black t-shirt, white socks, and white sneakers.

30-Year-Old Man Kills Wife, Injures Mother-in-Law In Brutal Attack

High Court judge Justice Pisirayi Kwenda is expected to receive an update on Friday regarding the State’s investigation into Marry Mubaiwa’s request for a permanent stay of her trial.
Mubaiwa, the ex-wife of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, sought a permanent stay of prosecution last year, citing poor health.
Her lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa, told journalists in Harare on Wednesday that the hearing was initially scheduled for the day, but was postponed due to the State’s failure to upload the agreed-upon documentation.
The judge indicated that the investigation outcomes would help determine whether Mubaiwa’s prosecution should be halted. Said Mtetwa (via <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/marry-mubaiwas-request-for-stay-of-prosecution-to-be-heard-friday/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>):

There was a case management today…there are investigations which the judge said were necessary to be done before he can decide whether or not our application of permanent stay should succeed or not.
So when we were last in court, he said we should agree that the investigation should proceed, and we exchanged correspondence and agreed on the issues and sent the issues to the prosecution department on 12 December.
Unfortunately, for some reason, they did not upload it or scan and send it to the judge although it was an agreed document.
So we are coming back on Friday 10 so that the judge can be updated on where we are with that process.

Mubaiwa, who has been battling poor health for over five years, is unable to stand trial or provide instructions to her lawyer due to her condition.
She suffers from lymphoedema, a disease that has caused her to lose both of her limbs. As a result, the former model is now confined to a wheelchair.
Mubaiwa is facing serious charges, including attempting to kill Chiwenga while he was critically ill and hospitalized in South Africa.
She is also accused of money laundering. However, her trial has been delayed, largely due to her ongoing health issues.

She is accused of doing bad things but hasn't been to trial yet because of her health. The judge will know more on Friday.

Marry Mubaiwa's Request For Stay Of Prosecution To Be Heard On Friday

Three inmates at Bulawayo Prison were arraigned before Regional Magistrate Joseph Mabeza on Tuesday, facing allegations of raping a fellow prisoner, reported <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/3-inmates-in-court-for-raping-fellow-prisoner-at-bulawayo-prison/">ZimLive</a>.
The accused, Bhekimpilo Sinyoro (30), Thabo Ncube (24), and Arnold Chemhere (29), allegedly assaulted a 20-year-old inmate currently incarcerated at the facility.
The victim reported to the police that he was sexually assaulted during a power outage around 9 PM on December 29 of last year.
According to Prosecutor Dominic Moyo, the incident began when Sinyoro approached the victim, inviting him to sleep closer.
When the victim declined, Sinyoro returned with Ncube, and together they forcibly dragged him to their sleeping area.
Once there, the victim was made to lie on his side, and Chemhere allegedly covered his face with a blanket, pressing him down.
When the victim resisted, Sinyoro reportedly unbuttoned his shirt, and with the assistance of Ncube and Chemhere, forcibly removed his shorts. Sinyoro then proceeded to sodomize the victim.
After the assault, when the victim managed to free himself, the trio allegedly offered him rice and beans, possibly in an attempt to appease him.
INcube has a prior conviction for malicious damage to property and is scheduled to complete his sentence on February 1, 2025.
Chemhere was previously convicted of unlawful entry in aggravating circumstances, while Sinyoro had recently completed a 30-day sentence for theft and was arrested while leaving prison.
The three men were remanded in custody and are set to appear again on January 25 for their trial. They are represented by lawyer Takunda Chipisa.

20-Year-Old Man Sodomised By Three Inmates At Bulawayo Prison

Two Harare men, Norest Sasa (39) of Tafara, Mabvuku, and Clive Makofa of Old Tafara, Mabvuku, were arraigned before the Harare Magistrates’ Court, facing seven counts of robbery and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm.
The court heard on December 16, 2024, the accused robbed a Mukuru Money transfer booth at Glenview 2 Shopping Centre.
They allegedly fired gunshots, demanding money from the teller, who complied. They ordered the teller to open a cash box containing US$1,839 and R2,350, which they placed into a black satchel.
Sasa and Makofa then searched one of the clients and stole his brown wallet containing US$950 before escaping in their getaway vehicle, a Black Toyota Mark X, while firing shots into the air to disperse the crowd.
On December 20, 2024, the accused, using the same method, targeted another Mukuru Money Transfer booth at Kamunhu Shopping Centre in Mabvuku, making off with US$1,374 and R22,000.
Their crime spree continued as they robbed the Manyame Complex Mukuru Money Transfer booth, stealing US$5,030 and R18,700, and the Beatrice Mukuru booth in January 2025.
The case was remanded to January 29, 2025, and the accused were advised to seek bail at the High Court.

Two Robbers In Court After A String Of Mukuru Booth Heists

The Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) has uncovered a syndicate of dishonest businesses in Bindura’s central business district, Mashonaland Central Province, involved in repackaging low-quality, underweight sugar.
The sugar, weighing 1.6kg, was being falsely labelled as 2kg under the brands Star Brand and Sugar Pack, deceiving consumers and shortchanging them. The CPC stated:

These despicable pseudo businesspersons were caught during the ongoing Cabinet directed operation/blitz against business malpractice where CPC conducted inspections in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Trade Measures Department, Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA), the Zimbabwe Republic Police, and the Ministry of Health and Child Care.
Preliminary Intelligence information indicates that this business is a major supplier of illegally repacked sugar in the country.
The shop was subsequently closed, the sugar confiscated, and legal proceedings have been initiated against them.
So far during the ongoing operation, over ninety unscrupulous businesses were prosecuted, and those found guilty of serious offenses have been taken to court to answer to their charges.
Such actions constitute a clear violation of section 10 of the Consumer Protection Act (Chapter 14:44), which prohibits suppliers from selling or marketing any goods or services unless they meet the mandatory safety and quality standards as prescribed by law.

Seventeen people have been arrested for taking photographs with their smartphones at the scene of a road traffic accident in Harare.
The accident occurred on Wednesday morning at the busy intersection of Sam Nujoma Street and Robert Mugabe Road in central Harare, resulting in several injuries.
A commuter omnibus, attempting to overtake a City of Harare refuse compactor while evading arrest failed to complete the manoeuvre and collided with the vehicle, injuring several commuters.
Police arrested the individuals, who were taking pictures, and confiscated their cellphones.
The practice of recording and posting accident scenes on social media has become increasingly common.
In cases of serious injuries or fatalities, relatives and friends may learn about the tragedy through photos posted on social media before the police have had a chance to properly identify the victims and inform their next of kin.

Police Confiscate Phones, Arrest 17 For Photographing Harare Traffic Accident Scene

Shylock Zulu, a 28-year-old from Themba Ndlovu Homestead, Mashala Village in Hwange, was convicted of theft by the magistrates court.
He stole a goat, slaughtered it, and then sold the meat to the goat’s owner.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), on January 8, 2025, Zulu took a black and white male goat belonging to Thabani Sibanda from the Mashala grazing area.
He then slaughtered the goat and went to Sibanda’s homestead, where he sold the meat for US$15, claiming it was bushbuck meat.
Sibanda became suspicious that the meat was from his missing goat.
Following an investigation, Zulu was sentenced to six months in prison, with three months suspended on the condition he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.
The remaining three months were suspended on the condition that Zulu pay the restitution of ZiG1057 to the complainant.

A man named Shylock Zulu stole a goat and sold its meat to the owner, pretending it was bushbuck meat. The owner became suspicious and found out the truth. Man Steals Goat, Sells The Meat To Owner As Bushbuck

Two robbers were apprehended by members of the public in Mufakose, Harare, on Sunday after their victims cried out for help during the robbery.
According to a statement from the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the two suspects, Vincent Tabvirakare (41) and Peter Munyaradzi Runganga (35), had stolen US$400, over R1000, and cellphones from their victims before being captured. Police said:

Meanwhile, the ZRP is appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of two other suspects, only identified as Zindoga and Gumbura, who are currently being sought in connection with the robbery case.

Heroic Mufakose Residents Capture Robbers Mid-Crime

Harare magistrate Taurai Manuwere on Monday dismissed an application by ZANU PF central committee member Mike Chimombe and his accomplice Moses Mpofu for refusal of further remand in a case involving serious allegations of fraud linked to a streetlight tender in Harare.
Chimombe and Mpofu are accused of submitting falsified documents to secure a US$9 million contract for the rehabilitation of streetlights.
In his ruling, Magistrate Manuwere said it was premature for the duo to make such an application and should allow the State sufficient time to prepare its case in accordance with the law.
Chimombe and Mpofu are being represented by lawyers Tapson Dzvetero and Arshiel Mugiya.
The court heard that in January 2024, the Harare City Council launched a streetlight rehabilitation project in preparation for the SADC summit.
The council invited bids, and 11 companies responded, including Juluka Endo Joint Venture (Pvt) Ltd, a company co-owned by Mpofu.
The tender invitation required all prospective bidders to provide stamped audited financial statements for the previous two years, as well as proof of payment for special procurement oversight committee and administration fees, among other conditions.
It is alleged that on April 19, 2024, an evaluation committee awarded contracts for eight lots to rehabilitate the streetlights.
However, Mpofu’s company failed to meet the requirements, as its audited financial statements lacked an audit opinion, a key prerequisite for bidding.
Despite this, the council invited Mpofu’s company to submit a revised bid, which allegedly contained falsified statements.
Mpofu is said to have misrepresented his company’s compliance with procurement regulations.
Court documents reveal that Mpofu submitted a bid security dated March 26, which had been used in a previous unsuccessful tender.
He also submitted audit documents that he claimed were prepared by three consultancy firms, but these companies were reportedly unregistered, according to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission.
Mpofu’s company was eventually awarded the contract, with Chimombe allegedly signing as a witness. The duo reportedly received a part payment of US$260,000.
The case has been postponed to January 27 for routine remand.

Court Dismisses Chimombe And Mpofu Application In Streetlight Tender Fraud Case

High Court judge, Justice Never Katiyo, will on Tuesday, January 14, hear an application filed by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights on behalf of the Harare Residents’ Trust (HRT), over the government’s inaction in repairing defective flyovers posing a serious safety risk to residents of the capital city.
The residents filed the application at Harare High Court on February 15, 2024, seeking an order to compel Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona to rectify the defects on three of the city’s flyovers.
The flyovers are located along Simon Mazorodze Road, Lytton Road, and Fidel Castro Road, identified in a report dated July 27, 2012, as well as all other defects within 90 days of the court order to ensure the flyovers are safe for road users.
HRT also wants the High Court to declare that Minister Mhona’s failure to rectify the defects on the three flyovers violates residents’ right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being as enshrined in section 73(1)(a) of the Constitution.
Through the application, submitted by ZLHR’s Tonderai Bhatasara, HRT, along with Loreen Mupesa, a resident of Harare who frequently uses the roads on the flyovers, argued that as the official responsible for road maintenance and rehabilitation in Zimbabwe, Minister Mhona must safeguard people’s lives by ensuring roads are safe.
HRT and Mupesa protested that Minister Mhona had not addressed the defects, noted several years ago, exposing the flyovers to the risk of collapse and endangering public safety.
They argued that with each passing day, the flyovers became increasingly dangerous and unsafe to use.
According to HRT and Mupesa, the defects on the three flyovers were identified by officials from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development and the City of Harare during a joint inspection, contained in a report produced on July 27, 2012.
The report listed defects such as spalling of concrete on bottom flanges of beams, severe corrosion to reinforcement steel, visible cracks along the centerline deck, severely damaged expansion joints, excessive vibration of the superstructure, poor drainage, water leaking on expansion joints, and longitudinal cracks.
HRT and Mupesa noted that while Minister Mhona’s ministry acknowledged the existence of the defects in 2021 and undertook to rectify them, the defects remain unfixed, compelling residents to seek the High Court’s intervention to eliminate the danger posed to motorists and other road users.

Harare Residents Sue Government Over Unsafe Flyovers

A man suspected to be part of a gang of armed robbers that targeted Mukuru Money Transfer agencies around Harare in recent weeks has been arrested.
According to <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/member-of-a-gang-of-armed-robbers-who-attacked-mukuru-money-transfer-booths-in-the-past-few-weeks-nabbed-he-says-he-will-plead-guilty-to-two-counts-of-armed-robberies/">H-Metro</a>, Clever Chada, from Stoneridge, appeared before Regional Magistrate Tilda Mazhande facing armed robbery charges. He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody.
Chada told the court that he would plead guilty to two of the robberies and a charge of illegal possession of explosives recovered from his car.
The alleged crimes date back to December 16, 2024, when Chada and his gang reportedly robbed the Mukuru Money Transfer booth at Glen View Shopping Centre.
They arrived in a black Toyota Mark X, parked outside the booth, and confronted the complainant, Tawanda Tagara, who was on duty. The robbers fired shots into the air and ordered everyone inside the booth to lie down.
They then threatened Tagara with firearms and demanded money, forcing him to open the cash box containing US$1,839 and R2,350, which they placed in a black satchel.
In addition, they searched client Proud Muchairi, stealing his brown wallet, which contained US$950, a driver’s license, and business cards, before making their escape, firing shots into the air.
Four days later, on December 20, the gang struck again at the Mukuru Money Transfer booth at Kamunhu Shopping Centre in Mabvuku.
The suspects, who were reportedly driving an unmarked silver Toyota Sienta, fired shots into the air and demanded cash from complainant Belinda Chapepura.
Despite her pressing the panic button linked to Safeguard Rapid Response, the robbers continued their attack, threatening to shoot her. She complied, handing over US$1,374 and R22,000 before they escaped.
On January 3, the gang targeted the Mukuru Money Transfer booth at Manyame Complex. Armed with pistols, they demanded money from employees Munyaradzi Rusere and Sarafina Banda, threatening them with death.
After stealing two cash boxes containing US$5,530 and R18,700, they confronted Sarudzai Pupajena, an EcoCash operator, and stole US$680 in cash and a G-Tel cell phone. The gang fired a shot into the air before fleeing the scene.
The gang’s final known robbery occurred on Saturday at a Mukuru Money Transfer booth in Beatrice. After attacking tellers Simbarashe Mutirandwa and Tatenda Walter Muchenje, one gang member drew a pistol and demanded the booth’s door keys.
The robbers stole US$3,500, ransacked the booth for other valuables, and took two Mukuru cell phones, as well as the teller’s Samsung A35 cellphone. They locked the two tellers in the booth before escaping.
Chada was arrested after police received a tip-off. Upon searching his car, they discovered three Thunder T90 explosive dynamites, one Emex explosive dynamite, and detonator cables, all without a valid license for possession.

A man named Clever Chada from Harare has been arrested for robbing Mukuru Money Transfer booths with his gang. Chada plans to plead guilty to two robberies. The gang stole money and threatened employees with guns at multiple locations. Chada had explosives in his car when he was arrested. He is facing charges of armed robbery and illegal possession of explosives. Chada was caught after a tip-off to the police.

Harare Man To Plead Guilty To Robbing Two Mukuru Booths

Illegal miners, commonly known as zama zamas in South Africa, who were arrested after being rescued from disused mines in Stilfontein, North West, have appeared in court and received wholly suspended sentences.
As reported by <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/north-west/stilfontein-miners-deported-to-neighbouring-countries-after-getting-wholly-suspended-sentences-105bec57-ff0b-4bca-93a3-9e00bf5ec966">IOL</a>, the second group of illegal miners was sentenced at the Stilfontein Magistrate’s Court on December 31 for illicit mining and violating the Immigration Act.
According to North West provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, the accused include 10 Lesotho nationals, four Mozambicans, and five Zimbabwean undocumented migrants, aged between 20 and 43.
Each of the accused was sentenced to six months in prison or a R12,000 fine for illegal mining. These sentences are suspended for five years, provided they are not convicted of illegal mining during this period.
Additionally, the miners were sentenced to three months in prison or a R6,000 fine for violating South Africa’s Immigration Act, with this sentence also suspended for five years on the condition of no further violations. Said Mokgwabone:

Meanwhile, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, has welcomed the conviction and subsequent deportation of the zama zamas.
Asaneng reiterated that the ongoing “Vala Umgodi” operation will continue to ensure that those who commit crimes are held accountable in accordance with the law.

Illegal miners called "zama zamas" in South Africa were rescued from abandoned mines in Stilfontein, North West. They got suspended sentences in court for illegal mining and breaking immigration laws. Five of them, from Zimbabwe, were deported back to their country. Five "Zama Zamas" Deported To Zimbabwe After Getting Wholly Suspended Sentences

A 25-year-old woman from Triangle in the South East Lowveld has been charged with murder after allegedly throwing her two young daughters into a water canal before attempting suicide last week.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said Blessing Chiromonye was arraigned before the Chiredzi Magistrates’ Court on Monday and was remanded in custody to January 23, 2025. Said the NPA:

Allegations are that, on the 8th January 2025, the accused threw her two daughters aged 4 and 8 into the main water canal, Triangle, resulting in their drowning and death. 
The accused person tried to commit suicide by jumping into the canal but was thrown out by the water. She went home and changed her wet clothes and tried to flee. 
The driver of the commuter omnibus she took was tipped about what had transpired and drove the accused person back. A police report was made, leading to her arrest.
</blockquote>
In an earlier statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said Chiromonyo took her daughters—aged three and seven—and jumped into the canal.
The children were swept away by the strong current, tragically drowning, while Chiromonyo was able to escape from the water unharmed.
Investigations by the Police established that the incident occurred after Chiromonyo had accused her husband of infidelity.

A woman named Blessing Chiromonye has been accused of throwing her two daughters, aged 4 and 8, into a canal, causing their deaths. She tried to commit suicide but was stopped by the water. She changed clothes and tried to run away, but the driver of the bus she took brought her back. The police arrested her. Earlier, she had jumped into the canal with her other two daughters, aged 3 and 7, because she accused her husband of cheating. She survived, but the children drowned. Chiromonye is now in custody, waiting for a court date in January 2025.

Woman Accused Of Drowning Her Two Daughters Remanded In Custody

The South African Police Service (SAPS) seized goods worth R500,000 bound for Zimbabwe on Saturday after they were abandoned on the banks of the Limpopo River.
In a media statement released late Sunday afternoon, SAPS confirmed that upon noticing police presence, the smugglers abandoned their inflatable boats and fled.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) Operation Vala Umgodi National Intervention (Roving) Team has successfully thwarted a major smuggling operation along the Limpopo River, in the Musina policing area leading to the confiscation of goods valued at approximately R500,000.
On the morning of 11 January 2025, at around 11:20 AM, the team was conducting a routine patrol near Tshiurundu village when they received a tip-off about approximately eight (08) small boats loading goods.
Upon noticing the police presence, the suspects quickly got into the boats and fled back into Zimbabwe, abandoning most of the goods behind.
The confiscated items, which were likely being smuggled across the border, include alcoholic beverages, energy drinks, baked goods, flour, and other consumer goods, along with a chest fridge.
The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commended the team for their swift and decisive action, noting that the success of the operation highlights the SAPS’s ongoing commitment to combating cross-border crimes and illegal trade activities.
All seized items have been registered at the Musina SAPS for further investigation and processing.

Police caught the goods near the Limpopo River as smugglers fled on inflatable boats.
The stuff included drinks, food, and a freezer, most likely smuggled from Zimbabwe.
The police praised for acting fast, stopping illegal trading between the countries.
All the items are now being checked by the police for more investigation.

Police in Harare are seeking information to help identify members of a mob involved in the fatal assault of an intruder in Budiriro suburb on Friday morning.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said the victim, identified only as Honest, was caught by the mob after breaking into a house and “grabbing” a 19-year-old woman who was asleep in her bedroom around 3 AM.
The woman screamed for help, alerting neighbours who rushed to the scene and apprehended Honest before he could flee.
The mob then attacked Honest with wooden logs, leaving him severely injured. He later succumbed to his wounds. The police statement reads:

Police in Harare are investigating a case of murder which occurred along Gunguwo Street, Budiriro, Harare on 10/01/25 at around 0300 hours in which a victim only identified as Honest died.
The victim was apprehended by a mob on allegations of unlawful entry into premises where he allegedly grabbed the complainant (19) who was sleeping in her bedroom, at a house in Budiriro 5B, Harare.
The mob assaulted the victim using wooden logs indiscriminately and left him for dead. The victim succumbed to the injuries.
The body of the victim was taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital mortuary for post mortem.

Police are also working to determine the motive behind the unlawful entry, as it appears the woman may have been targeted for sexual assault or robbery.

The police in Harare are looking for people in a group who killed a man named Honest. Honest broke into a house and grabbed a 19-year-old girl. The girl screamed, and neighbors caught Honest. The neighbors hit him with wooden logs, and he died from his injuries. The police are trying to find out why Honest broke into the house, maybe to rob or hurt the girl. The police want to know who else was in the group that killed Honest.

ZRP Seeks Leads On Fatal Mob Attack On Intruder In Budiriro

A Gwanda-based magistrate, Talent Phiri, has been sentenced to an efffective five years in prison after soliciting a bribe of US$3,000 from a businessman, reported <a href="https://bmetro.co.zw/us3-000-bribe-seeking-magistrate-jailed-five-years/">B-Metro</a>.
The trial was conducted by Harare regional magistrate Farai Gwitima at the Tredgold Magistrates Court in Bulawayo.
Phiri, 35, from Mount Cazalet suburb, pleaded not guilty to the charge of criminal abuse of duty as a public officer.
However, he was ultimately convicted and sentenced to seven years in prison, with two years suspended on the condition that he does not commit a similar offence within the next five years. Additionally, he was ordered to return the bribe amount he received.
Gwitima presided over the case after Bulawayo magistrates recused themselves.
In delivering the sentence, Gwitima stressed the urgent need to combat the rampant corruption that has become a pervasive issue throughout the country.
He underscored the responsibility of the courts to take a stand against such misconduct and restore integrity within public service. Said the magistrate:

Members of the judiciary must honor their public offices and must not solicit gifts or bribes. The aggravating factors far outweigh the mitigating factors in this case.
</blockquote>
Gwitima said that all witnesses provided substantial evidence, and the offender was caught red-handed, which led to the guilty verdict.
In mitigation, Phiri’s lawyer, Prince Butshe Dube from Mathonsi Ncube Law Chambers, urged for a lenient sentence.
He said Phiri was a first-time offender who had already lost his job and was the sole breadwinner for his wife and three children.
Prosecuting, Acumen Khupe, informed the court that the offense occurred after Phiri granted an interim protection order to Qiniso Ncube against her former husband, Lungisani “Two Minutes” Ncube, on August 27 2024. A warrant of arrest for Ncube was attached to the protection order.
On September 4, Phiri called Ncube, claiming he wanted to assist him in his domestic violence case.
He falsely alleged that officers from the President’s Office, police, and the National Prosecuting Authority were involved and demanded a US$3,000 bribe to prevent Ncube from being jailed.
Ncube informed Phiri that he would try to raise the money, but Phiri persistently called to demand it.
During their conversations, Ncube negotiated the amount down to US$2,500 and was instructed to deliver the money to Phiri’s residence the next morning.
Ncube reported the matter to the police, providing audio recordings of his conversations with Phiri.
A sting operation was set up, and the following morning, police accompanied Ncube to his meeting with Phiri.
Phiri was arrested after accepting the trap money, which was found in the right pocket of his boxer shorts.
In his closing arguments, Khupe highlighted the severity of Phiri’s actions, saying Phiri abused his position as a judicial officer, exploiting court proceedings for personal gain.
He said such conduct erodes public confidence in the justice system and warrants a fitting sentence.

Gwanda Magistrate Sentenced To Seven Years For Soliciting US$3,000 Bribe

The Zimbabwe Republic Police have confirmed two chilling murder cases that unfolded over the weekend, evoking shock and horror in the community.
In separate incidents, a father beheaded his son, and a man was killed over a pot containing sadza and chicken.
In the first case, a 32-year-old man from Daakoni Village in Buhera faces murder charges after allegedly beheading his 11-year-old son on Friday.
Tawanda Magoso reportedly returned home from a shrine where he had gone for prayers, retrieved an axe from his bedroom, and attacked his son.
The community rallied together, apprehending Magoso and escorting him to the local police station. Said the ZRP:

The ZRP reports that Tawanda Magoso (32) was arrested in connection with a case of murder which occurred at his house in Daakoni Village, Buhera on 10/01/25 in which his son, Taonga Magoso (11) died. 
The suspect allegedly returned home from a shrine where he had gone for prayers and took an axe from his bedroom which he used to strike the victim indiscriminately all over the body.
The victim’s head separated from its torso and sustained multiple injuries on the back. Resultantly, the victim succumbed to the injuries.
The suspect was later apprehended with the help of members of the community.

The second case occurred the following day in Village Midzi, Masvingo, where 41-year-old Makneme Chikutuva was arrested in connection with the murder of 42-year-old Maxwell Manjonjo.
Chikutuva allegedly assaulted Manjonjo with ox yoke leather straps after accusing him of stealing a pot filled with sadza and chicken.
When Chikutuva noticed that Manjonjo was struggling to breathe, he callously carried him to Musingarahwi Business Centre and abandoned him there.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has also launched a manhunt for Takunda Gwitira, who is also being sought in connection with the murder case.

Police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred at a financial institution in Beatrice on Saturday morning.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is appealing for information that could help apprehend the culprits.
According to a statement from the ZRP, three unidentified male suspects, armed with pistols and wearing face masks, seized keys from the teller at the booth.
They forcibly took US$3,500 in cash and three cellphones before locking the teller in the booth and making their escape in a silver-grey Toyota Sienta.
Police are urging anyone with information about the robbery to come forward. Said the ZRP:

The ZRP is investigating a case of robbery which occurred at Beatrice Township, Beatrice on 11/01/25 at around 0900 hours.
Three unidentified male suspect who were armed with pistols and wearing face masks, pounced at a local financial institution and demanded keys to the booth from the teller.
The suspects gained entrance into the booth and stole US$3 500.00 cash and three cellphones.
The suspects locked the teller into the booth before driving away in a Silver Grey Toyota Sienta with no vehicle registration number plates.
Anyone with information to report at any nearest Police Station.

Armed Robbers Strike Financial Institution In Beatrice, Make Off With US$3,500

A 25-year-old woman from Masvingo has been arrested for allegedly drowning her two daughters in a water canal on Wednesday, following a dispute with her husband.
According to a statement from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the suspect, Blessing Chiromonyo, took her daughters—aged three and seven—and jumped into the canal.
The children were swept away by the strong current, tragically drowning, while Chiromonyo was able to escape from the water unharmed. Police said:

Police in Masvingo arrested, Blessing Chiromonyo (25) for murder which occurred at a water canal at Section 4, Triangle on 08/01/25.
The suspect got hold of her two daughters aged three and seven before diving into the water canal.
The children drowned after being swept away by water while the suspect managed to get out of the canal unhurt.
Investigations by the Police established that the incident occurred after the suspect had accused her husband of infidelity.

Chiromonyo is now facing two counts of murder, each stemming from the tragic deaths of her daughters. If convicted, she could face a lengthy prison sentence.

Mother Drowns Her Two Young Daughters In Apparent Botched Murder-Suicide Attempt

Four Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) officials—Revenue Officers identified as Maguta, Mitwira, Homera, and Gwatirinda—were arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) for allegedly extorting a transport operator.
The ZIMRA officials are accused of demanding a US$6,000 bribe from Beatrice Maramwidze, a director at Best Express Logistics, to release a company bus impounded during an anti-smuggling operation.
Despite Best Express Logistics paying the ZiG 55,000 customs duty, the officials demanded a bribe to release the bus from BAK Storage in Harare.
Following a ZACC undercover investigation triggered by Maramwidze’s report, the officials were apprehended in a ZIMRA vehicle after accepting a US$1,500 bribe.
A subsequent search revealed an additional US$3,951, suspected to be proceeds from further extortion.
The suspects are being held at Avondale Police Station and are scheduled to appear in Harare Magistrates’ Court on Friday, January 11, 2025.
