Killer Kombi Driver Jailed Four Years For Culpable Homicide
A kombi driver was on Friday sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of culpable homicide.
Harare magistrate Yeukai Chigodora sentenced Bruce Mutizingwa, 29, to four years’ imprisonment before she suspended one year on condition of good behaviour.
According to prosecutor Isheunesu Mhiti, Mudzingwa’s conduct pushed for a custodial sentence to act as a deterrent against would-be offenders. He said:
The accused person only managed to stop 500 metres after the point of the accident which shows that his degree of negligence was very high.
The court should not lose sight of the fact that a life was lost and thus a fine would trivialise this offence. A clear message ought to be sent that drivers must exercise caution to preserve lives.
Mudzingwa was driving his Nissan Caravan along Mutare road at an excessive speed when he hit Yeukai Masvingise, who fell 100 metres from the point of impact.
She was rushed to Avenues Clinic where she died an hour later.
