Special Courts Set Up In MaShurugwi-infested Areas
Chief Justice Luke Malaba said that special courts have been set up to deal with the infamous machete wielding criminals commonly referred to as Mashurugwi.
Malaba made the remarks while officially opening the 2020 legal year at the Constitutional Court in Harare on Monday. He said:
The country is gripped by another spate of violence perpetrated by the so-called machete gangs.
FeedbackThe judiciary acknowledges the work being undertaken by the law enforcement agencies in bringing perpetrators of that wave to book.
May I assure the nation that the courts will decisively deal with the accused of these offences in accordance with the law.
Towards the end of 2019, there was an upsurge in cases of robberies perpetrated by gangs of people wielding machetes mainly in the mining communities.
In December, a machete gang attacked and killed a police officer who was guarding a mine in Kadoma.
