President Emmerson Mnangagwa has defended the recent launch of the country’s first satellite, Zimbabwe Satellite (ZimSat-1), saying it will enable the government to make timeous responses to disasters such as pandemics.
The government has been criticised for prioritising space projects when it is failing to adequately fund health and education among other critical national needs.
But Mnangagwa, writing in his column in the Sunday Mail, said the project will assist in disaster mitigation. He said:

Many thought this was rank madness by some starry-eyed dreamers, was something well beyond our reach given the myriad challenges we grappled with at the time.
Our infrastructure was broken, our economy was in a state of collapse and we endured long hours of power outages. Yet there we were, dreaming about participating in the space economy.
ZimSat-1 allows us to see our country from outer space. We are also able to make key interventions in national health, including foreseeing pandemics in time for timeous responses.

Satellite Allows Us To See Our Country From Outer Space - Mnangagwa

Zimbabwe’s first satellite,  ZimSat-1, was launched on Monday, 7 November 2022, by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
The launch was made possible by Japan’s Kyushu Institute of Technology which unveiled what it called the Joint Global Multinational Birds Programme, or the “BIRDS” programme in 2015.
The programme is meant to increase knowledge of space technology around the world by training scientists from non-space countries, like Zimbabwe.
According to <a href="https://newzwire.live/one-small-step-meet-the-scientists-behind-zimbabwes-debut-satellite-launch/">newZWire</a>, four Zimbabwean scientists, Victor Mukungunugwa, Kudakwashe Jeje, Ramson Munyaradzi Nyamukondiwa, and Timothy Kuhamba, are working with Kyushu Institute of Technology under the current BIRDS-5 programme.
The scientists worked on “cubesats”, or nanosatellites, small satellites that weigh no more than 10kg and are widely used in the industry.
These were handed over to the Japanese space agency, JAXA, in July this year.

Victor Mukungunugwa is a graduate Aerospace Engineer and Space systems engineer from the National Aerospace University of Ukraine and Kyushu Institute of technology respectively. Victor is the BIRDS-5 Project Manager. He works mainly in satellite structure designing, satellite environmental testing and safety review.
<h2>Kudakwashe Jeje</h2>
Kudakwashe Jeje is an Aeronautical Engineer from Samara National Research University in Russia. He is part of the BIRDS-5 Project in the Structures and Attitude Determination and Control System.
<h2>Ramson Munyaradzi Nyamukondiwa</h2>
Ramson is a PhD Student in Electrical and Space Engineering in the laboratory of Lean Enterprise and In Orbit Experiments. He is a member of BIRDS-5 and LEOPARD Satellite Project.
<h2>Timothy Kuhamba</h2>
Timothy Kuhamba is the leading member for the Attitude Determination and Control Subsystem. Kuhamba is also responsible for designing the Attitude Visualization software to predict the camera pointing of the satellite.

Here Are The Four Zimbabweans Working On Satellite Programme

Zimbabwe’s first satellite is <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/launch-of-zimsat-1-postponed-nasa/">scheduled to be launched</a> on Monday 7 November 2022 after missing the October and <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zimbabwes-first-satellite-goes-into-space-on-6-november-2022/">today (6 November 2022)</a> schedules.
Government critics say the satellite is not a priority for a country that is failing to provide basic health care.
In a post seen by Pindula News, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Permanent Secretary, Nick Mangwana, seems to be responding to critics. He said:

Commenting on the case previously, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development Minister Professor Amon Murwira said <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/03/22/zimbabwe-moves-closer-to-launching-own-satellite-higher-and-tertiary-education-minister/">the successful launch of the satellite</a> will result in the country saving millions of foreign currency.
He said the money is currently being paid to foreign companies for foreign satellite services.
Murwira said at the moment, MultiChoice, the owner of DSTV, is getting more than US$18 million yearly in subscriptions from Zimbabweans while the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) is paying US$1.2 million annually to a French company for radio and television satellite signals. 
Murwira said $25 million was secured for the initiative.

The launch of Zimbabwe’s first satellite, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/nasa-says-zimbabwes-1st-satellite-will-be-launched-into-space-on-november-6-2022/">ZimSat-1, has been postponed,</a> the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced.

NASA said the launch of the NG-18 rocket that carries Zimbabwe’s ZIMSAT-1 has been postponed due to a fire alarm in some parts of the building. The weather and the rocket were reported to be okay.
The launch is now scheduled for tomorrow (Monday 07 November 2022 at (12:27 PM Zimbabwean time) 5:27 a.m. EST).
The launch will air on NASA Television and the agency’s website, as well as YouTube, Twitter, and NASA’s App.

Launch Of ZIMSAT-1 Postponed - NASA

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has said <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zimbabwe-launching-its-1st-satellite-into-space-in-october-authorities/">Zimbabwe’s first satellite, ZimSat-1</a>, will be launched into space on November 6 from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport on Wallops Island, Virginia, United States, according to <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/date-set-for-zim-satellite-launch">The Sunday Mail</a>.
ZimSat-1 will be on board the Cygnus NG-18, an uncrewed spacecraft that provides commercial cargo resupply services to the International Space Station (ISS). The spacecraft will also carry two other small satellites from Japan and Uganda.
In a statement, Ms Melissa Gaskill, an official with the NASA ISS programme research office, said:

The 18th Northrop Grumman commercial resupply services mission for NASA to the International Space Station carries out scientific investigations of topics such as plant mutations and mudflow structure along with a demonstration of camera technology and small satellites from Japan, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
BIRDS-5 is a constellation of cubesats: Pearl AfricaSat-1, the first satellite developed by Uganda; ZimSat-1, Zimbabwe’s first satellite; and TAKA from Japan.
BIRDS-5 performs multispectral observations of earth using a commercial off-the-shelf camera and demonstrates a high-energy electronic measuring instrument.
The statistical data collected could help distinguish bare ground from forest and farmland and possibly indicate the quality of agricultural growth.
This could help improve the livelihood of citizens of Uganda and Zimbabwe.

NASA Says Zimbabwe's 1st Satellite Will Be Launched Into Space On November 6, 2022

Authorities have said the launch of Zimbabwe’s first satellite, ZimSat-1, into space has been moved to 28 October after missing the July deadline due to stormy weather.
ZimSat-1 is scheduled to reach the International Space Station (ISS) in October before its launch into orbit in November.
The Sunday Mail reports that ZimSat-1 is provisionally scheduled to reach the ISS on October 28, before being launched from the Japanese Kibo module.
Zimbabwe’s space programme began in 2018 following the establishment of the Zimbabwe National Geospatial and Space Agency (ZINGSA).
It is envisaged that the satellite will immensely enhance the country’s mineral exploration, monitoring of environmental hazards and mapping of human settlements, among other capabilities.
ZINGSA co-ordinator Dr Painos Gweme said the launch is now imminent. He said:

Our launch was disturbed by weather and it is now scheduled for October 28.
The rocket will go to the International Space Station in October, then the satellite will be loaded into the Japanese Kibo module, awaiting release into space.
This is usually determined by weather in space.
So, it usually takes two or three weeks, then the satellite is released into orbit.
We already have the necessary infrastructure in place. We have the receiving systems in place, so once we launch, we will immediately be able to put our space presence to good use.

Three Zimbabwean scientists are said to have been in Japan working on the project.
Authorities say the satellite will enable Zimbabwe to deploy geospatial technology to manage its boundaries, calculate its full mineral quantities and help telecommunications companies improve their services.
Over the past three years, ZINGSA developed a Revised Agro-Ecological Map for Zimbabwe, which was last updated in 1960.
Meanwhile, critics say Zimbabwe needs to fix basics like roads and hospitals first before “dreaming” about going to space.
