The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZIMPARKS) has urged visitors to Parks Estates to follow established rules and regulations to ensure their safety and the preservation of wildlife.
This appeal comes after a 23-year-old man was killed and eaten by two crocodiles while illegally fishing at night in Gonarezhou National Park.
In another tragic incident, an 18-year-old boy drowned in Matobo National Park while swimming in prohibited waters.
In a statement issued on Thursday, December 19, ZIMPARKS spokesperson Tinashe Farawo emphasized the importance of adhering to the strictly designated park visiting hours from 6 AM to 6 PM. Said Farawo:

We wish to remind all visitors into Parks Estates of the importance of adhering to the rules and regulations established to preserve the safety of both individuals and wildlife within our estates.
Recent events highlighted the dangers associated with illegal night fishing when a 23 -year-old man lost his life in Gonarezhou National Park after being attacked by two crocodiles and his remains were to be removed from the bellies of the reptiles.
Another sad incident was an 18-year-old boy who drowned in Matobo National Park whilst illegally swimming in prohibited waters.
Our condolences to the bereaved families. May their souls rest in peace.
These incidents serve as a reminder of the risks associated with failure to follow laid down rules and regulations within the parks estates.

ZIMPARKS Urges Visitors To Follow Rules After Fatal Crocodile Attack And Drowning

Over the weekend, more than 1,000 fish were found dead in Lake Chivero, according to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks).
In a statement issued on Sunday, December 15, Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo attributed the fish deaths to possible poisoning caused by sewage runoff from the Marimba area. Said Farawo:

At least 1,000 fish were found dead over the weekend in Lake Chivero.
Preliminary investigations indicate that sewage runoff from the Marimba area has forced contaminated water into multiple bays, creating hazardous conditions for aquatic life.
High pollution results in a boom in algae growth, this increases oxygen demand on the water body resulting in high mortality for the fish.
As wind patterns continue to shift, we anticipate that this issue may further impact fish populations across the lake.
In response, our team is currently on the ground carrying out further investigations on a broader scale.

Zimparks recently confirmed that four rhinos, three zebras, four wildebeests, and four fish eagles, along with several goats and cattle, have died after drinking water from Lake Chivero, the main water source for Harare.
Lake Chivero is facing a severe pollution crisis. The contamination is primarily from sewage effluent, industrial and domestic waste, and agricultural runoff.

More than a thousand fish were found dead in Lake Chivero in Zimbabwe. The fish may have died because sewage from the Marimba area contaminated the water. Pollution causes algae to grow and use up oxygen, which can harm fish. The issue could spread to other parts of the lake. Other animals like rhinos and zebras have also been affected. The pollution in Lake Chivero is mainly from sewage, waste, and runoff from farms. Authorities are investigating the problem to try to help the animals and clean up the lake.

Sewage Contamination Suspected In Mass Fish Deaths At Lake Chivero

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has arrested Mathew Mudimu (37), a Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) ranger, on charges of theft and criminal abuse of duty.
According to a statement from ZACC, Mudimu is accused of conspiring with fellow ranger Courage Homela to illegally sell stolen Kapenta fishing permit tags, resulting in an estimated loss of US$1,200 for ZimParks. Reads the statement:

It is alleged that Mudimu conspired with fellow ranger Courage Homela to steal unregistered fishing tags from ZimParks storerooms. These tags were meant for official allocation to kapenta fishers.
In March 2023, Mapuranga Chikwasha, a fisherman, had his application for a kapenta fishing permit rejected due to lake overcapacity.
However, Mudimu reportedly offered Chikwasha three stolen fishing tags for lease for US$450 per month.
Chikwasha paid US$700 through Mudimu’s wife and the accused person installed one of the tags on Chikwasha’s vessel.

According to ZACC, the theft was uncovered during a routine patrol when ZimParks officials discovered an unregistered fishing tag and subsequently impounded the vessel. Investigations later confirmed that the tag had been stolen from ZimParks.
Mudimu was arraigned at the Chinhoyi Magistrates Court on November 27, 2024, where he was granted US$100 bail. He is scheduled to return to court on December 14, 2024.

A ZimParks ranger named Mathew Mudimu was arrested for stealing and selling fishing tags. He worked with another ranger to steal tags from ZimParks and sold them to fishermen. Three lions were discovered dead in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, with their heads and paws removed.
The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) suspects that the incident is linked to poaching for ritual purposes.
According to ZimParks, the lions were shot on Monday at Nyamandlovu Pan, near Hwange Main Camp, before being beheaded and having their paws cut off.
ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo stated that the lions were killed using a heavy-calibre rifle. Said Farawo:

We are investigating a suspected case of lions poaching in Hwange, the suspects used a heavy calibre rifle before they chopped the heads and feet of the lions.

Occasionally in Zimbabwe, lions kill people, often with little public condemnation. In contrast, when humans kill lions, it sparks outrage among conservationists both locally and globally.
In 2015, there was widespread condemnation when Cecil the Lion, one of the country’s most famous big cats, was lured with an elephant carcass and subsequently hunted.

Three Lions Found With Heads And Paws Removed In suspected Ritual-use Poaching Incident In Hwange

Zimbabwe has over 130 tonnes of elephant tusks stockpiled, from which it cannot derive any economic value due to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) banning ivory trade in 1989.
This stockpile, valued at over US$600 million, remains idle in Zimparks’ vault in Harare, and the quantities continue to grow.
Fulton Mangwanya, the director general of the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks), made these remarks during a recent signing ceremony with Defend, formerly known as National Park Rescue (NPR), in Chizarira National Park in Binga. Because of natural mortality, because of maybe management of elephants, they (stockpiles) continue to rise.
The situation that I have right now is that the vault on its own is now full of ivory. I don’t know what to do with it.
Right now, we are doing it internally. We want to kill, utilise the meat; we are not exploiting, they still make noise…you send them (elephants) to China, they make noise. You say we want to sell the hides, they (conservationists) make noise.
You want to sell the ivory, they make noise. So, by the end of the day as a sovereign state we have to do what is good for our nation.
We will not watch and see our people dying of hunger, especially those surrounding the parks where we have got these elephants.
So indeed yes, we are going to kill 200 or even more if they don’t actually service the need.

Zimbabwe is home to over 80,000 elephants, with Hwange National Park home to between 45,000 and 55,000 elephants, exceeding its carrying capacity of 15,000. The country last conducted an elephant culling in 1988.

Zimbabwe Faces Dilemma With 130 Tonnes Of Ivory Worth $600 Million

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks), on Saturday, September 28, responded to a distress call from a resident in Victoria Falls and gunned down a problem elephant that had entered their yard.
As reported by <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/thestandard/news/article/200032971/zimparks-defends-shooting-of-vic-falls-elephant">The Standard</a>, the elephant was shot around 5 AM, prompting outrage among animal conservationists who argued that the elephant left behind calves. Said an animal rights activist:

An elephant cow was shot dead on the streets of Victoria Falls today (yesterday) leaving her three orphaned calves.
This has caused an outcry. The elephant was just eating some plants outside someone’s garden and it was shot by parks rangers at 5 AM.

However, Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo defended the decision to kill the elephant, saying it had posed a threat to human life. Said Farawo:

Yes there was an incident of elimination of an elephant, human life was under threat and normal in this is part of our wildlife control measures.
I do not know how they come to the conclusion that this elephant had three young calves.
You know we do not use emotions when we deal with these things. We deal with facts.
The fact still remains when human life is under threat, that is how we react and we are not apologetic.
I think it’s not right for people to invoke emotions around problem animals control.
When human life is under threat we react, its provided for in our policy and legislation and that is what we have done.
How do they prove that this is the calf of the eliminated elephant, they are just playing games.

ZimParks and Defend, formerly known as National Parks Rescue (NPR), have been collaborating in the management of Chizarira National Park for the past six and a half years.
Chizarira National Park is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including four of the Big Five: elephants, lions, leopards, and buffaloes. However, rhinos are not present.
The park is also a paradise for bird watchers, with over 360 species recorded, including the rare Taita falcon and African pitta.
Chizarira offers a true wilderness experience with activities like walking safaris, allowing visitors to explore its majestic gorges, natural springs, and diverse ecosystems.

ZimParks, Defend Forge Partnership To Revitalise Chizarira National Park

Four primary schools near Matusadona National Park are set to benefit from a €200,000 feeding scheme that will last until March 2025.
The schools receiving support are Nselelo Primary School (under Chief Negande), Dove Primary School (Chief Mola), Chikuro Primary School (Chief Nebiri), and Majazo Primary School (Chief Musambakaruma).
Tinashe Farawo, a spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks), revealed the details of the feeding scheme during a media tour of the national park.
In 2019, Zimparks invited African Parks to assume management of Matusadona National Park under a 20-year agreement. The goal is to revitalise the park for the benefit of both wildlife and surrounding communities.

Adequate nutrition is essential for optimal cognitive function and learning. In drought-affected areas, where families may struggle to provide sufficient meals, feeding schemes in schools can ensure that students receive regular and nutritious meals.

Last week, United Nations officials appealed to the international community for support to help Zimbabwe address the humanitarian impacts of El Niño which is threatening 7.6 million people with acute hunger.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 22 per cent of school-aged children are out of school because of the economic and social impacts of the drought.

Feeding Scheme Benefits 1,300 Primary School Learners

Two Village Heads from Dete, Hwange District, Matabeleland North Province, were sentenced to 12 months imprisonment for setting a class one wire snare for trapping a lion.
Elias Nyoni (51) and Zenzo Ndlovu (47) were also ordered to compensate Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management (ZimParks) an amount of US$ 20,000.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), a report was made to the Police on 17 May 2024 following suspicions that a lion might have been killed because the collar tracking signal seemed to be stationary from 12 May 2024 to 17 May 2024 when a report was made. Said the NPA:

The Police and the ZimParks authorities proceeded to the scene to locate the lion but only found the carcass of a donkey and a class one wire snare with lion fur.
Investigations carried out in the illegal resettlements (Muraga) linked the accused persons to the lion. The accused persons led to the recovery of the collar tracker and a class one wire snare used to trap the lion.
The collar tracker was destroyed beyond repair. Further investigations led to the recovery of three sacks of game meat as well as 16 lion claws, and four lion teeth. The lion was valued at US$ 20,000.

Nyoni and Ndlovu pleaded guilty to the charges and they were sentenced to 12 months imprisonment of which 6 months were suspended for 5 years.
The accused persons were also ordered to compensate ZimParks an amount of US$ 20,000. The class one snares, claws, teeth and game meat were forfeited to the State.

Two Village Heads Jailed For Killing A Lion

In a recent incident in Katombora, Middle Zambezi Valley, two suspected poachers met a fatal end after engaging in a firefight with Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife (Zimparks) rangers.
The confrontation resulted in the deaths of the poachers, while three others were apprehended. 
The rangers acted swiftly to protect wildlife and recovered 15 elephant tusks, along with a rifle and ammunition.
Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed the incident posting on X:

2 suspected poachers were gunned down in Katombora (Mid Zambezi) after an exchange of fire with @Zimparks rangers while 3 were arrested. 15 tusks, 375 rifle, 5 rounds of ammunition were recovered. Investigations are in progress.

Poaching remains a critical issue in Zimbabwe, threatening the country’s rich wildlife heritage.
A recent investigation revealed a cyanide scandal implicating authorities and a mysterious Chinese businesswoman named Li Song.
According to The NewsHawks report, a staggering 40 tonnes and a pallet containing 1.1 tonnes of cyanide were clandestinely and unlawfully stored at a warehouse in Bulawayo.
Cyanide, commonly associated with mining, is also used by poachers, with recent reports suggest that over 300 elephants have died in Hwange National Park due to poachers lacing watering holes and salt licks with cyanide.

Two Poachers Gunned Down, Three Arrested In Mid-Zambezi

In the tranquil fishing community of Gatche Gatche, nestled along the shores of Lake Kariba, a chilling legend has taken root.
Residents speak in hushed tones of a crocodile with supernatural powers—a creature that has allegedly claimed the lives of more than 21 people, primarily fishermen.
But it’s not the sheer number of victims that sets this reptile apart; it’s the gruesome manner of their demise.
Locals have christened this elusive giant reptile as “Macheni” because of the crocodile’s peculiar taste for human private parts.
Victims consistently lose these intimate body parts, while the rest of their bodies remain untouched.
Some even speculate that Macheni is no ordinary predator. Instead, it serves as a weapon, wielded by an individual possessing potent “magical powers.”
This mysterious figure allegedly employs the harvested private parts for dark arts.
Kariba residents, who shared their accounts with <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/the-terror-of-kariba-with-a-taste-for-human-private-partszimparks-spokesperson-tinashe-farawo-responding-to-h-metro-enquiries-has-told-this-newspaper-that-residents-of-the-affe/">H-Metro</a>, insist that Macheni is no mere crocodile. They believe it is a phantom, slipping through the murky waters undetected.
Officials from the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) have reportedly struggled to track down and eliminate this enigmatic creature.
Residents also allege that most, if not all, of the attacks have occurred in a concentrated region.
Tinashe Farawo, Zimparks spokesperson, acknowledges the community’s belief that Macheni transcends the natural realm. He said:

A total of 32 lives were lost from crocodile attacks in Lake Kariba, between Sanyati River and the Lake Kariba Dam Wall, between 2016 and 2023.
Between 2016 and 2023, 38 crocodiles were eliminated during the same period. Over 40 crocodiles were also captured and translocated.
As from 2019, legal and illegal gill netting fishers in Gatche Gatche area assumed that crocodile attacks taking place in the Tsetse Island general area were caused by one crocodile.
While the fact that the attacks are caused by only one crocodile remains an assumption, efforts have been made by Zimparks to assess the area and to eliminate suspect crocodiles in the general area.
The community has named the alleged crocodile “Macheni.” Reasons for the assumption that the crocodile attacks were caused by one crocodile emanated from the fact that most of the attacks were taking place in one general area.
“The fishers have a belief that the crocodile is a spiritual crocodile and this is the reason they named it “Macheni,” since they claim that the crocodile used to only remove testicles from men after the attack.”

Farawo said that their observations have revealed that the crocodile attacks in this area were generally taking place at night. He added:
<blockquote>
Gill netting at night is not allowed, it is actually conducted by poachers. The area of concern is not a legal fishing ground, which they also called “Macheni Bay”. Illegal fishers usually delay giving reports of attacks and this makes follow up difficult.
The reasons why most of the attacks were taking place in this general area were that many people were flocking to this area to do illegal fishing, this is probably because they were enjoying good fish catches in this area.
It is also a fact that crocodiles also feed on fish and they also tend to flock areas with more fish and this has caused this conflict. 
More than 7 crocodiles have been eliminated in the general area between 2020 and 2023, however, the Gatche Gatche community has maintained that the alleged “Macheni” is still alive. 
Several attempts to eliminate the alleged crocodile were done way after the crocodile attacks, since all reports are received days after the attacks, making the searches difficult. 
We have also called upon the Gatche Gatche community to help to identify the alleged crocodile so that we eliminate it once it has been spotted.
We are continuing working with the fishers association to identification of the alleged crocodile.

Farawo said between December and January this year, Zimparks intensified anti-poaching patrols at Tsetse Island and removed all poachers, who periodically put illegal shelters.
He said since then, no person has been attacked by crocodiles at the alleged “Macheni Bay”.
Farawo added that once the specific crocodile is positively identified, Zimparks will take decisive action to eliminate the threat it poses.

Zimbabwe has recorded a decline in poaching at the Hwange National Park, the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) has said.
A total of 36 wildlife animals were poached in 2022, down from 42 in 2021.
From 2016 to 2019, at least 322 elephants were killed by poachers, largely for their tusks.
ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo told the <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200021472/hwange-game-park-records-decline-in-poaching">Southern Eye</a> that poaching had been on a decline, with no cases recorded in 2023 at the game park. He said:

Poaching has gone down in Zimbabwe. In Hwange, we have been doing extremely well in terms of managing our wildlife.
We are not doing this in isolation, but we also work closely with others like the International Fund for Animal Welfare, the World Wildlife Fund, the African Wildlife Foundation and many others too many to mention in fighting poaching.

Farawo said harsh jail sentences coupled with various interventions such as joint patrols with wildlife agencies have contributed to the decline in poaching. He said:

In terms of partnerships, what we are calling conservation partnerships, they are also helping us in terms of resources such as vehicles, and refresher courses for our rangers and it has helped a lot because we are now more visible in communities.
We are now more visible in the parks, which is deterring would-be poachers. The mandatory nine-year sentence has also proved to be a deterrent.

Poachers target elephants and rhinos for their horns, which are in high demand in Asia.
Reports suggest that some Asians believe ivory and tusks have medicinal properties although there is no scientific evidence for this.

Hwange Game Park Records Decline In Poaching - Zimparks

The 30-year-old female security guard who died following an attack by an elephant while at work in Hwange on Friday was not equipped to safely discharge her duties, it has emerged.
The now-deceased Lydia Dube was deployed alone at night without a firearm or a radio communication system.
This was said by Farai Maguwu, the founding Director of the Centre for Natural Resource Governance (CNRG). <a href="https://x.com/FMaguwu/status/1728842793240736138?s=20">He posted on X Sunday</a>:

Lydia Dube (30), was tragically killed by an elephant whilst guarding a broken down crane at Chaba mine in Hwange yesterday.
She was deployed alone at night without a firearm. She also did not have a radio communication system. Perhaps they wanted her to defend the machine with her body.
She is survived by her daughter. Human-wildlife conflict is now rife in Hwange due to various factors which may include climate change and mining near national parks.

According to a report by <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/female-security-guard-dies-after-elephant-attack/">The Sunday News</a>, Lydia Dube was pronounced dead on arrival at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo on Saturday after being transferred from Hwange Colliery Hospital.
The killer elephant has since been put down by Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management (Zimparks) rangers.
A source was quoted as saying Dube who was employed as a security guard was on duty where she was guarding a broken-down crane at Chaba Mine. Said the source:

She saw an elephant a distance away and disembarked from the machine she was guarding to go to the guard room.
Unbeknown to her, there was an elephant lurking behind her that attacked her before she got to the guard room leaving her for dead.
She was discovered still alive but seriously injured.

Dube was reportedly rushed to Hwange Colliery Hospital where her condition deteriorated before being transferred to Mpilo where she succumbed to the injuries on arrival.

Female Security Guard Killed By Elephant In Hwange Was Alone At Night, And Had No Firearm Or Radio - Maguwu

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZIMPARKS) has suspended two senior officials, Edmund Chirongedzo, the Procurement Officer, and Delia Mapuranga, the Procurement Clerk, effective July 21, 2023, pending investigations into allegations of procurement irregularities.
The suspension follows accusations of tampering with quotations to give favoured suppliers an advantage. ZIMPARKS spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo said:

The Parks and Wildlife Management Authority would like to confirm the suspension of Edmund Chirongedzo the Procurement Officer and Delia Mapuranga the Procurement Clerk, effective 21 July, 2023, pending investigations on allegations of procurement irregularities involving tampering with quotations in order to give advantage to certain suppliers among other malpractices. The suspension is in line with the Government’s drive to fight corruption within public entities.

ZIMPARKS had earlier been accused by a group of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) of threatening to cancel tenders awarded to them. The SMEs supply ZIMPARKS with supplies through tenders and Request for Quote (RFQ), and have accused senior officials at ZIMPARKS of attempting to create a corrupt procurement system. The SMEs had written to the office of the President and Cabinet expressing their concerns over the matter. Reads the letter:

We also seek to bring to the President’s attention that the move by the parastatal is digressing from national policies on Youth and Women Empowerment.
The move was communicated by on Brian Mupandawana who visited all SMEs providing procurement services to the environment entity. We believe that a wave of corruption is now game of the day at the parastatal and this is now affecting the survival of our local businesses.
We are kindly requesting our President through the responsible ministry to intervene on our behalf. We are living up to the Vision of the President in making Zimbabwe great using our own local SMEs, hence “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo”. Anyone who clamps down on Women and Youths is an enemy of the Second Republic and Vision 2030.

Tinashe Farawo has denied the accusations made by the SMEs that senior officials at ZIMPARKS were attempting to create a corrupt procurement system.
Corruption and tender scandals have been a recurring issue in government parastatals in Zimbabwe. The Auditor General often reports corrupt activities in the awarding of tenders and procurement processes, with some senior officials being implicated in the scandals. ZIMPARKS Suspends Two Senior Officials Over Procurement Irregularities Allegations

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has recorded a slight decrease in the number of people killed by wild animals since last year, reported the <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local-news/article/200009926/human-wildlife-conflicts-rise-in-hwange">Southern Eye</a>.
ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo said that 15 people were killed by wild animals during the first quarter of 2023 compared to 22 killed during the same period last year. Said Farawo:

We have noticed a slight decrease in the number of people who have been killed by wild animals since last year.
Last year, we lost about 22 lives in the first quarter compared to 15 during the same period this year.

ZimParks said it trans-located 150 elephants in Hwange in the first quarter of 2023, the same as last year, as a way of dealing with overpopulation.
According <a href="https://bmcecol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12898-020-00319-1#:~:text=The%20cause%20of%20human%20wildlife,and%20deforestation%20in%20national%20park.">to a study</a>, the root causes of human–wildlife conflicts include agricultural expansion (30%), human settlement (24%), overgrazing by livestock (14%), deforestation (18%), illegal grass collection (10%) and poaching (4%).
An international ban on the trade in wildlife products and species has been blamed for an increase in the elephant population in Hwange National Park.
According to ZimParks, the elephant population in the game park is more than 50 000, far beyond its holding capacity of at least 15 000.

Number Of People Killed By Wild Animals Falls

The Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management (Zimparks) has managed to account for a crocodile that recently attacked and seriously injured two teenage boys in the Chivake River in Gutu.
Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zimparks-kill-problem-gutu-crocodile/">The Herald</a> that the crocodile was shot and killed by rangers and its carcass taken to Masvingo. Said Farawo:

We eliminated the crocodile in the Chivake River in Gutu after it attacked and injured two boys who were taken to Chivhu Hospital for treatment. Their condition is stable.
Every time there is a problem animal, Zimparks attends to such situations and either kills the animal or animals or just scares them away and in this case we killed the problem crocodile in Chiguhune.

Farawo implored members of the public to treat water bodies with caution as they risk being attacked by crocodiles.
Cases of human-wildlife conflict have been on the rise in recent years and this has been attributed to a population increase of both humans and wildlife, the effects of climate change, deforestation, illegal cutting of grass, and general mismanagement of natural resources.

Zimparks Rangers Kill Problem Crocodile In Gutu

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) has put down an elephant that was destroying crops and fruit trees in the Mkhosana and Mfelandawonye suburbs of Victoria Falls.
Over the weekend, Zimparks rangers reacted to a distress call by the community and put down the lone elephant.
A resident told ZBC News that the elephant was destroying gardens, fields, orchards and perimeter fences. Said the resident:

We are grateful to Zimparks for listening to our plight and the patrols they are making in our areas. Let them continue and increase such.
We are very happy, the elephant was a real problem and it was destroying our fruit trees, mangoes and paw paws and others.
We had resorted to putting elephant dung on our crops to scare them away.

A commentator on wildlife issues Bulisani Mathe gave an insight into circumstances that warrant an animal to be put down. Mathe said:

It is not in the best interest of conservationists to put down wild animals, but there are times when it has to happen. 
When a wild animal becomes a threat to human life and property and when it’s injured beyond recovery through human intervention such as snares, it has to be put down before it kills people or damages more property.

Cases of human-wildlife conflict have been on the rise in Zimbabwe over the past few years as animals frequent human settlements in search of food and water.
In 2022, about four people were trampled to death by elephants in Victoria Falls.

Six elephants that include four adults and two calves were recently found dead in a forest near Victoria Falls.
Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) spokesperson Tinashe Farawo said they are ruling out poaching because the carcasses were found with their tusks intact.
As a result, Zimparks was conducting investigations to ascertain the cause of death. Said Farawo:

We can confirm the death of six elephants in a forest near Victoria Falls. When the carcasses were found, the ivory was intact. We are investigating the cause of the death of these elephants.
We are ruling out poaching, but we suspect that they could have been struck by lightning.

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) has reviewed entry fees into the Victoria Falls Rain Forest and Zambezi River.
The new conservation fees for entry into the Zambezi River and Victoria Falls are with effect from 1 January 2023.
According to the new fees schedule, locals will pay US$10 to enter through the ordinary gate up from US$7 per person.
SADC and clients from overseas will pay US$30 and US$50, up from US$20 and US$30 respectively.
Locals will pay US$30 per person to enter through the VIP gate, SADC clients will pay US$75, while international clients will pay US$150.
Locals who want to tour the rainforest under the moonlight will be expected to pay US$15 per person while SADC clients will pay US$70 and US$100 for international clients.
To visit the Zambezi River, international clients will pay US$15, SADC clients will pay US$12 and locals will pay US$5.
Children above five years of age will pay half the adult fees.
Tourism industry players say they were not consulted before the new fees were announced but Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo said they do not get funding from Treasury. Farawo said:

The fees will be effective in January and I think the prices are fair if we do a comparison with our competitors in the region.
We have a sensitive Government that wants people to access these things which is why we always try to maintain affordable rates.
This is our most prized asset, Victoria Falls and as our premier tourist destination, I don’t think US$10 is too steep for locals because the asset must generate its own income.
Compared to other destinations around the world you find that viewing gorillas in Rwanda is between US$750 to US$1 500 while park entrance fees in Tanzania are US$30 while visiting the rainforest is the cheapest thing that a person can get in Victoria Falls.

Zimparks Raises Entry Fees At Victoria Falls Rain Forest

One of Zimbabwe’s leading tourist attractions and home to 350 bird species and large mammals, Mana Pools, is slowly dying due to the effects of climate change.
According to the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife (Zimparks), three pools in the National park dried up during the 2019 drought.
The name Mana Pools was derived from the Shona word “Mana” which means “Four” in reference to the park’s four large pools which are the remnants of ox-bow lakes carved out by the Zambezi River when it changed its course.
Since 1963, Mana Pools has been a protected area known for its four pools namely Green, Chine, Chisasiko and the Long pool which is 7 kilometres.
Zimparks Area Manager for Mana Pools, Edmore Ngosi revealed that since 2019, Chine Pool has been struggling to hold water throughout the year largely due to siltation as a result of land degradation. Said Ngosi:

Since 2019 because of the effects of climate change due to global warming, that is when this pool, Chine Pool dried up together with Green Pool and the Long Pool.
Siltation is taking place, there is a lot of erosion that is taking place as evidenced by the Gullies.
There is a lot of erosion that is taking place in the catchment area and this has resulted in the siltation of the pool and in the process resulting in the low water levels.
Once we start receiving rains, the pool will fill up but around mid-August it loses its water.

Climate Change Hits Mana Pools National Park

Residents of Mbizo and Msasa suburbs in Kwekwe are living in fear after a local man claimed that he heard a lion roaring while working in his fields.
The man was working in his field along Mvuma road, a few metres away from Eye of the Wild, a sanctuary on the outskirts of Kwekwe.
A message circulation on social media claims the lion is suspected to have escaped from the sanctuary which takes care of orphaned or injured wild animals.
Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) regional manager, Kwanele Manungo confirmed to the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/panic-as-lion-spotted-in-kwekwe-suburbs/">Chronicle</a> having received the alarm.
She, however, said authorities at Eye of the Wild said their one and only lion was still at the sanctuary. Said Manungo:

We are on the ground as we speak as we try to track the lion if indeed it’s there. This is after we received calls that a man heard a lion roar while in his fields so we are trying to ascertain if indeed it’s there, but as of now there are no tracks of the said animal. Meanwhile, we urge residents to remain alert and watch their steps.

Panic As Lion Heard Roaring Close To Kwekwe Suburbs

A woman from Figtree in Matabeleland South Province and her family were given groceries worth US$50.00, T-shirts and conservation books by the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) after she handed over a live pangolin that she had encountered in the veld.
Portia Moyo from Mahenya Village received the gifts from Zimparks principal wildlife investigation and security officer Amos Gwema.
Gwema told <a href="https://vicfallslive.co.zw/index.php/2022/10/12/figtree-woman-rewarded-for-handing-over-pangolin/">VicFallsLive</a> that the gift was meant to encourage communities to conserve wildlife. Gwema said:

I handed over a grocery hamper worth US$50 to Portia Moyo of Mahenya Village after she picked a live pangolin while she was cutting thatching grass.
I also handed three T-shirts to the family with a conservation message to appeal to the community against committing wildlife crimes.
Portia Moyo was very thankful and she encouraged me to continue doing the good work because she said the community is rarely recognised in wildlife conservation.
She spoke touchingly saying ‘You are a rare person, who remembers us, poor villagers, most funds are used by elites on meetings and on hotels without recognising the poor villagers who reside side by side with these animals.

Gwema said the pangolin has been released back to the Hwange National Park.

Zimparks Rewards Woman For Handing Over Pangolin

Zimbabwe’s Minister of Environment, Climate Change, Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Mangaliso Ndlovu has said it is of much vitality for the country to avail more resources to Zimparks to combat poaching.
Ndlovu made the remarks after tasting the exciting experience offered by Mana pools campsite in the Zambezi Valley Environment recently. He said:
<blockquote>We have registered some massive successes in terms of combating poaching. The area they are covering is 12 000 km2. We are advised there are different species targeted by poachers especially elephants. I am happy with the work they are putting in despite the fact that they face sophisticated poachers. Among the critical issues that were raised have to do with resources which issue I will raise especially with my colleague, the Minister of Finance. We are advised that for the 120000 KMS our rangers are sharing about five cars and we are worried about that.</blockquote>
Zimparks Zambezi Valley Cluster Manager, Felix Chimeramombe told ZBC News that some 73 wildlife poachers were caught last year.
Zimbabwe is believed to be losing millions of United States dollars through poaching with the illegal hunters targeting animal species such as elephants and rhinoceroses for ivory.
The tourism sector is one of Zimbabwe’s main foreign currency earners.

An investigation into the deaths of 20 elephants in Hwange National Park has suggested that they could have died of a disease called hemorrhagic septic-aemia.
The contagious bacterial disease affects cattle and water buffaloes with a high mortality rate in infected animals.
The Director-General of Parks and Wildlife Management Authority of Zimbabwe  Fulton Mangwanya told Parliament on Monday while giving oral evidence that the diseasecan cause massive deaths. He said:
<blockquote>The results, to date, point to cause of elephant deaths in Zimbabwe being a disease known as hemorrhagic septic-aemia. It has been reported to kill Asian elephants in India. It also affects cattle, pigs and chicken in Southern Africa, in which species it can cause massive mortalities.</blockquote>
The disease is said to have killed over 200 000 saiga antelopes in Khazakhstan in 2015.
Elephants have over the years been attracting large numbers of local and foreign tourists hence they are a major revenue source for Zimbabwe.
Meanwhile, authorities have been expressing concern over the ever-increasing number of elephants saying they are now unable to contain the herds.
International laws governing the sell and management of wildlife has restricted Zimbabwe from selling the elephants.
