According to economists and business executives, the demand for commodities and services has started to weaken due to the rising cost of living. The depreciation of the Zimbabwe dollar has eroded the buying power of many people, particularly those formally employed and earning local currency.
Economics professor <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gift_Mugano/">Gift Mugano</a> stated that disposable incomes have been significantly eroded by inflation, leaving consumers with little to spend. While 80% of transactions are now conducted in US dollars, there is not enough liquidity in that currency to stimulate demand. Mugano believes that the majority of workers in the formal and informal sectors are not earning enough to stimulate demand. He said last week:

It’s not about dollarisation or the US dollar dominance, but it is about liquidity, which is quite small.
That is why we have seen prices in the US dollars going down because there is no money to stimulate demand.
Buying power has been eroded and the US dollar incomes have been typically quite low.

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Confederation_of_Zimbabwe_Industries/">Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI)</a> president, Kurai Matsheza, stated that companies are beginning to witness a massive decline in aggregate demand. He said:
<blockquote>
Certainly until and unless the pay adjustments match the depreciation (of the currency), aggregate demand naturally diminishes and more importantly, would the employers be able to match the salaries to the levels of (currency) depreciation? I don’t think so.
 What we are seeing in our businesses is the coming down of demand; it is drying up even the order quantities have also come down.

However, the chief executive of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/ZNCC/">Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC),</a> Christopher Mugaga, believes that aggregate demand is not determined by incomes and salaries from the formal sector because they are insignificant and compensated by artificial demand. He said:
<blockquote>
Aggregate demand is not determined by incomes and salaries from the formal sector because they are very insignificant. That insignificant portion is compensated by artificial demand because there are already fears of shortages of products.
</blockquote>
According to some analysts, the decline in order quantities for manufacturers may not be due to weakening demand, but rather changes in trading terms. Schweppes managing director, Charles Msipa said companies are now insisting on upfront Zimbabwe dollar payments, which has become difficult for some. Msipa added that it is still too early to determine the demand patterns due to these changes, particularly in the formal sector, which predominantly uses the Zimbabwe dollar. Msipa stated that it is hard to know if the uptake of the product is low when retailers do not have their products on their shelves.
Last month, the Finance and Economic Development Minister, Prof <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mthuli_Ncube/">Mthuli Ncube</a>, announced policy measures to stabilize the economy. However, the domestic currency has depreciated by roughly 393% against the US dollar.
While some suggest dollarisation may help, Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor, Dr <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/John_Mangudya/">John Mangudya</a>, stated that full dollarisation of the economy would lead to weakening demand for goods and services. He said the rate at which US dollars go out is faster than the rate at which they come in, and dollarisation would lead to companies scaling down and job losses.

Business Executives: Demand Weakens Due To Rising Cost Of Living

The Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) has issued a note to its members saying the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has assured that <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Nostro balances</a> and liquidity in the overall banking system are safe and secure and can be used for external payments as before.
This followed claims of unfunded Nostro balances circulating on social media. The organization said it is closely monitoring financial sector developments to safeguard its members’ interests. In a statement seen by Pindula News, t<a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">he Chamber</a> notes with concern the <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">unconfirmed claims</a> on alleged restrictions around withdrawing cash against Nostro balances. ZNCC said:

The Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) closely follows the financial sector developments in the Zimbabwean economy, with a view to ensure that the interests of our members are safeguarded. This is in keeping with part of Chamber’s constitutional mandate to “promote, improve and encourage the development of trade and commerce in Zimbabwe.” The financial sector plays a crucial role in the economy and the Chamber notes with concern the unconfirmed claims circulating in social media on unfunded Nostro balances and alleged restrictions in withdrawing cash against them. Upon enquiry with the Central Bank, we learnt that it was just false information. On further enquiry with the Central Bank to get deeper understanding of the actual position in the financial sector, particularly on the actual performance of local Nostro transactions, we have been assured that the nostro balances and liquidity in the overall banking system are safe and secure and can still be used for external payments as has been the case. So far, none of our members have experienced challenges with transacting using their local Nostro accounts.
We urge our members and the wider business community not to panic and make decisions based on inaccurate market information. We also urge monetary authorities and the financial sector at large to continue fostering financial prudence and transparency to safeguard this sensitive sector of the economy in the interests of stability, economic growth, and development.

RBZ Has Assured That Nostro Balances Are Safe, Can Still Be Used - ZNCC

Local businesses have urged the government to waive duty for the importation of generators and solar gadgets to minimise the effects of electricity shortages in Zimbabwe.
Businesses have resorted to using other sources of energy such as solar and generators despite the high costs involved, <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/suspend-duty-on-importation-of-generators-solar-gadgets-government-urged/">The Sunday News</a> reported citing <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Confederation_of_Zimbabwe_Retailers">Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers (CZR)</a> president Mr <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Denford_Mutashu">Denford Mutashu</a>. He is quoted as saying:

It is still quite unbelievable by the generality of business that there is insufficient water to generate (power at Kariba) or we have used up our allocation of water to generate more electricity. However, most businesses have started investing in generators and solar-powered electricity.
We call upon Government to also waive duty for importation of generators as well as an array of solar gadgets into the country. This can also alleviate the impact of the current challenges that we are facing as businesses.
It’s a crisis on both the supply and the payments issue. As it is you may also remember that the power supplier has demanded payment of electricity exclusively in foreign currency the USD especially for commercial purposes.
This means there is more pressure on businesses. It piles more pressure on pricing, it also piles more pressure on members of the public and consumers. Ultimately prices rise because of power challenges. It affects the budgeting by the majority and generality of Zimbabweans.

Matabeleland <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/ZNCC">Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC)</a> chairperson Mr McKenzie Dongo said businesses have resorted to using different and expensive sources of energy like solar and generators, and the cost is passed to consumers.
Since 2019, Zimbabwe has been experiencing acute power shortages which authorities blame on ageing power generators and inadequate foreign currency to import more electricity from neighbouring countries.

Businesses Urge Govt To Waive Duty For Importation Of Generators And Solar Gadgets

Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) president Mike Kamungeremu said the country needs to quickly focus on its own power generation, as power shortages in South Africa threaten local industry.
Over the past few weeks, South Africa’s power utility, Eskom, reported that several coal-powered generation units had broken down owing to old age and poor maintenance.
There are fears that power blackouts in South Africa will result in:
<blockquote>
1). reduced power supply to Zimbabwe. Eskom used to sell up to 400MW of electricity per month to Zimbabwe
2). a delay in delivery of imports from SA by local industry.,
3). a rise in electricity prices in the region as SA will look beyond its borders to secure electricity for its industry.

Kamungeremu told NewsDay Business that Zimbabwe has other options but should now focus on ensuring that its power generators can produce enough power for the whole nation. He said on Eskom’s power blackouts:
<blockquote>
It could have some effect since we import power from them but I don’t want to read much into that. We have other options like Mozambique and Zambia but our real focus must actually be on our own power generating infrastructure.
We have been informed that Hwange 7 and 8 are nearing completion and that’s sweet news to our ears. We would rather look forward to the 600 megawatts expected from those plants than worrying about power cuts in South Africa.

Zimbabwe has a power deficit of between 1 000MW and 1 600MW and as a result, has been importing US$17 million worth of power monthly to meet the local electricity generation shortfall.
Shortages of foreign currency limited imports. Last year, ZESA spent US$225 million on power imports.
<h2>What’s being done:</h2>
The government is upgrading and adding new generation units to the power plants at the Kariba and Hwange power stations. 
Kariba’s two generating units that are being constructed have the capacity to generate 300MW of power while Hwange will see two more units being added with a combined capacity of 600MW.

ZNCC President Says Zimbabwe Should Focus On Own Power Generating Infrastructure

The Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) has claimed that the gross domestic product (GDP) growth projections by the Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Professor Mthuli Ncube are farfetched considering deep discord in the country’s economic achievements so far.
The leading business group speaks after the Finance minister had indicated in his 2021 budget last year that the country’s economy was expected to grow by 7.4 % after a projected 4.1 percent contraction this year.
Mthuli Ncube’s GDP growth projections say the economy’s turnaround will be driven by a strong recovery in agriculture, mining, electricity, construction, transport, and communication as well as finance and insurance.
But ZNCC’s brief 2021 economic outlook said the target was too high also considering that the country is still grappling with the coronavirus pandemic. ZNCC said:
<blockquote>Gross Domestic Product (GDP) forecasts in the last budget can only be a mirage. We will be thankful to the Almighty if we are to post even a +0.5% growth for 2021, with a negative 6%-9% being our forecast before the economy moves out of the hole in the second half of 2022.</blockquote>
ZNCC urged the government to adopt smart and targeted Covid-19 <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/02/27/zimbabwe-businesses-fed-up-with-hard-lockdowns/">containment measures allowing businesses to operate during the pandemic as continuous and strict lockdowns</a> were threatening the mere existence of some companies, mainly small to medium enterprises.
The business member organisation added that the gloomy outlook, “the most pessimistic in 12 years may be explained by the fact that 25% of SMEs believe they won’t come back to normalcy after the pandemic.”
Meanwhile, President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday reviewed lockdown measures to allow businesses to operate albeit observing the World Health Organisation (WHO) protocols.

Mthuli Ncube's GDP Growth Projections A Mirage -ZNCC

The Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) said not enough consultations were done on price controls.
In a letter addressed to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, titled “Sustainable and market-friendly interventions to addressing price spiralling during the lockdown,” ZNCC said there is a need to shift from price controls to price monitoring. Read the letter in part:
<blockquote>ZNCC, with membership across all the value chains of the economy, was not consulted when the decision on the price freeze was implemented. Government announced that it was with immediate effect and that recent price increases, predominantly during the lockdown period, were speculative and unjustified. Government pointed out that the multi-sectoral stakeholders committed to a price moratorium to operate based on the prices which were applicable on March 25 and that this was supported by a Cabinet decision of April 21 2020.</blockquote>
Vice-President Kembo Mohadi in April announced that the Government held a multi-sectoral meeting with the business community and agreed that businesses would maintain prices charged by 25 March as part of measures to cushion the public from effects of COVID-19-induced lockdown.
Meanwhile, some retailers are reportedly continuing to increase the prices of basic commodities in violation of the order.

"We Were Not Consulted," - Businesses Defiant On Price Controls

President Mnangagwa yesterday urged the business community to strike a balance between making profits and national interest in light of the recent price increases.
Mnangagwa said this at the fourth edition of the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) annual business review conference in Harare yesterday. The conference ran under the theme: “Enterprise Development, Corporate Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Growth.” Said Mnangagwa:
<blockquote>I urge stakeholders to continue the good relationship that has been established. I further call on business to strike a proper balance between their business and national interests.</blockquote>
