<p>Zimbabwe have named two uncapped players in their squad for a sub-regional qualifying contest in Kenya this month as they begin their quest for a place at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.</p>
<p>The newcomers are all-rounder Tashinga Musekiwa and right-arm fast bowler Tinotenda Maposa, with 11 of the players who featured against India in July being retained.</p>
<p>Aiming to rebuild under new head coach Justin Sammons, Zimbabwe are going to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional Qualifier B with a young squad with an average age of 26 and a total of 509 T20I appearances.</p>
<p>Captain Sikandar Raza, at 38 and with 91 matches under his belt, is the team’s most experienced player, followed by the returning all-rounder Ryan Burl, who at 30 has featured in 77 games.</p>
<p>The other seasoned campaigners in the side are all-rounder Wessly Madhevere and pace bowlers Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava, aged 24, 28 and 26 and with 65, 56 and 55 T20I appearances respectively.</p>
<p>Apart from Burl, recalled after regaining his form, Zimbabwe also welcome the return of right-arm seamer Trevor Gwandu, who had not made the cut since his international bow against Ireland in December last year.</p>
<p>Zimbabwe’s Convener of Selectors, David Mutendera, is confident the young side will deliver results at the six-team ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional Qualifier B, the other participants being the Gambia, Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda and the Seychelles.</p>
<p>The top two sides in the tournament will advance to the regional final, where they will be joined by Namibia and Uganda, who were given a bye after having participated in the previous ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, and four other teams from sub-regional qualifiers A and C. Said Mutendera:</p>

<p>We have picked a young squad that is good enough to make us qualify and I am confident they will deliver in Kenya.</p>
<p>If you look at the direction we are taking, with the 2026 T20 World Cup and the future in mind, we have been blooding in youngsters who will definitely do the job like they did in winning single matches against Bangladesh and India in our last two series.</p>
<p>Raza is still there for now, but we had to start the process of building a younger team for the future. Of course, there are some players who have missed out on selection this time but they are still part of our plans.</p>

Uncapped Duo In Zimbabwe’s Squad For T20 World Cup Qualifier

<p>Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) on Wednesday, 19 June announced it had appointed South African Justin Sammons as Head Coach of the Zimbabwe Senior Men’s National team.</p>
<p>Sammons was part of the Proteas technical team as a batting consultant between 2021 and 2023.</p>
<p>In a statement, ZC said Sammons will be joined by former Zimbabwe international Dion Ebrahim who is coming in as Assistant Coach.</p>
<p>Ebrahim represented Zimbabwe in 29 tests and 82 ODIs between 2001 and 2005 and has been a part of the coaching staff with the New Zealand senior men’s team.</p>
<p>Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani said:</p>

<p>We are delighted to confirm Justin as Head Coach of the Zimbabwe Senior Men’s National Team.</p>

<p>Dave Houghton resigned as Zimbabwe’s head coach in 2023 after the country failed to qualify for the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies.</p>
<p>Sammons, who is set to lead Zimbabwe for the first time in a five-match T20 series against India in Zimbabwe beginning July 6 in Harare, said:</p>

<p>It is an absolute privilege to be appointed as the Zimbabwe Senior Men’s National Team Head Coach.</p>
<p>I look forward to the road ahead and I am excited to start working with this talented group of players.</p>

<p>The rest of the technical staff for the senior men’s side will be appointed in consultation with Sammons.</p>
<p>ZC has also announced former Zimbabwe captain Elton Chigumbura as Head Coach of the Zimbabwe Under-19 Men’s National Team.</p>
<p>Rangarirai Norbert Manyande, who played first-class cricket in Zimbabwe before he went on to feature for Namibia, was named as his Assistant and Batting Coach, while former South Africa star Paul Adams will be the Bowling Coach.</p>

Justin Sammons Named Zimbabwe Senior Men’s Cricket National Team Coach

<p>The construction of a multi-purpose sports stadium is set to commence soon in Victoria Falls and the facility is expected to be completed in August next year ahead of the 2027 International Cricket Council World Cup.</p>
<p>The tournament will be co-hosted by Zimbabwe, South Africa and Namibia.</p>
<p>The stadium will also host some sports codes such as football, rugby, tennis, hockey and squash.</p>
<p>President Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to lay the foundation stone to mark the commencement of construction of the stadium.</p>
<p>Speaking at the post-Cabinet briefing on Tuesday in Harare, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Jenfan Muswere said the construction of the facility will create training and employment opportunities for the local communities. He said (via <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/world-cup-stadium-for-zim/"><strong>The Herald</strong></a>):</p>

<p>Zimbabwe Cricket was allocated 10 hectares of land for the construction of an international cricket stadium and ancillary facilities in the Masuwe Special Economic Zone for Tourism in Victoria Falls.</p>
<p>The project will contribute towards the US$5 billion tourism and hospitality industry by 2025, as well as the development and expansion of sports infrastructure in the country.</p>
<p>Tourism is a key pillar of the Zimbabwean economy and ranks at number three after mining and agriculture, accounting for 12 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product during the period January to September 2023.</p>
<p>The construction of the cricket facilities and associated infrastructure will also create training and employment opportunities for communities in Victoria Falls.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Babra Rwodzi said the stadium will be constructed by ZC (Zimbabwe Cricket) who will own the facility for the next 25 years. Said Rwodzi:</p>

<p>The stadium will be completed next year, 2025, in August to allow the work on the grass, which has to be done a year before the World Cup, to take place.</p>
<p>The other sports disciplines that will be conducted in the same stadium will be rugby, tennis, hockey, and squash. They are still looking at other disciplines that can come on board.</p>
<p>There is another ground (B-Arena) to be constructed in the same place for the practice sessions of the teams that will be competing at the World Cup.</p>
<p>Zimbabwe Cricket is funding the construction. Zimbabwe Cricket is leasing the ground on a 25-year agreement with the Government and they will be constructing using their own money.</p>

<p>ZC chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani on Tuesday night told The Herald that the funding for the 10,000-seater stadium was in place.</p>

<p>Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has suspended another national team player, Kevin Kasuza, after he tested positive for a banned recreational drug during an in-house doping test. ZiFM Stereo Sports anchor, Mike Madoda reported:</p>

Zimbabwe Cricket Has Suspended Another National Player For Doping Violation

Zimbabwe Cricket Has Suspended Wessly Madhevere And Brandon Mavuta Over Use Of Banned Recreational Drugs

<p>Dave Houghton has resigned as the Head Coach of the Zimbabwe Senior Men’s National Cricket Team. He will remain with the Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) Board in a different role, <a href="https://zimcricket.org/news/2626/ZC-accepts-Houghton%E2%80%99s-resignation-as-Zimbabwe-Head-Coach">Zim Cricket</a> reported. Houghton submitted his resignation letter before the board meeting, where they were going to discuss Zimbabwe’s failure to qualify for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Houghton felt that after 18 months in charge, he had “lost the changeroom” and believed a new voice was needed to lead the team. The resignation came after Zimbabwe’s loss in a limited-overs series against Ireland. He said in a statement:</p>

<p>I have always had Zimbabwe cricket at heart and, though my coaching of the national team comes to an end, I would love to be involved in other areas.  </p>
<p>The talent base in Zimbabwe is enormous. How we move players from talented to performing well on the international stage is a great project to be involved in.  </p>

<p>ZC Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani acknowledged Houghton’s contribution and regretted that he felt the changeroom needed a change. He said:</p>

<p>With Houghton’s departure, an interim technical team will be appointed to oversee Zimbabwe’s upcoming tour to Sri Lanka in January. The ZC Board also formed a three-member committee to investigate the team’s failure to qualify for the World Cup and to review the cricket affairs structure of the organization. The committee, whose other members are Mr Godfrey Nyadongo and Mr Blessing Ngondo, has been given three weeks to complete its tasks.</p>

<p>Zimbabwe are close from qualifying for the cricket World Cup after winning against Oman by 14 runs on Thursday at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. This was the Chevrons’ first match in Bulawayo having played all their group matches in Harare.</p>
<p>They scored 332-7 from 50 overs, with Sean Williams hitting his third hundred of the event. Oman put up a strong fight with the bat but were unable to overcome the massive Zimbabwe total, falling short by 14 runs. They scored 318-9.</p>
<p>Zimbabwe now tops the table, having won two matches against the West Indies and the Netherlands during the group stage. They are trying to qualify for the one-day showpiece, which they have missed out on for eight years.</p>
<p>The top two teams in the Super Six standings will qualify for the World Cup. Oman is all but out of contention. Despite starting the match with zero points, they pushed Zimbabwe hard.</p>
<p>Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani took three wickets to put Zimbabwe on the brink of victory, while Luke Jongwe made a remarkable catch on the boundary. Williams scored 142 off 103 balls, with 14 fours and three sixes, to provide the backbone of Zimbabwe’s innings.</p>

Cricket: Zimbabwe Move Closer To World Cup With Oman Win

<p><strong><a href="https://africasacountry.com/2023/05/the-meanings-of-heath-streak/">Fungai Machirori</a> </strong>suggests that the career of Zimbabwean cricketing legend <strong><a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Heath_Streak/">Heath Streak</a> </strong>reflects the unresolved tensions of race and class in Zimbabwe. Machirori, a creative and communication and digital media specialist, says despite this, there are few white Zimbabwean sporting figures who can generate interest and discussion across the country’s many divides.</p>
<p>Recently, <strong><a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2023/05/14/health-streak-battling-cancer/">news emerged of Streak’s critical illness as he battles advanced cancer</a></strong>. Streak, a prominent figure in Zimbabwe’s golden cricketing era, made his one-day international debut in 1993 and test debut the following month. Streak remains Zimbabwe’s all-time leading wicket-taker in both Test and ODI cricket, and the only Zimbabwean to complete the double of 1000 Test runs and 100 Test wickets, and 2000 ODI runs and 200 ODI wickets.</p>
<p>Streak and South African Lance Klusener stood out on their sides for their fluency in local languages, in a sport where the majority of players were white. Streak was a native Ndebele speaker who could offer post-match interviews to local media news outlets in the language.</p>
<p>Zimbabwean cricket’s earliest teams rarely reflected the demographics of a black-majority nation, with most national players being white and generally coming from farming and private school backgrounds. Streak became the Zimbabwean team captain in 2000 but resigned amid tensions with the Zimbabwe Cricket Union board over payments and proposed team quotas based on race. He returned to Zimbabwe’s captaincy in 2002 but faced criticism for not taking more political stances favourable to the board and government. It was during Streak’s captaincy at the 2003 Cricket World Cup that <strong><a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Henry_Olonga/">Henry Olonga</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Andy_Flower/">Andy Flower</a></strong> wore black armbands in silent protest over the worsening social and political conditions in the nation.</p>
<p>By 2004, many white players including the Flower brothers and Campbell had left the international fold, and Streak retired from international cricket in 2005. Streak returned to the national team as a coach, first as a bowling coach in 2009, and then as a supporting coach in 2010, before becoming the national team coach in 2016. His tenure was shaky and saw Zimbabwe fail to qualify for the 2019 Cricket World Cup, and he was forced to resign.</p>
<p>In 2021, Streak became controversial after being banned from cricket for eight years by the International Cricket Council for his role in match-fixing in various leagues. Machirori says Streak’s career mirrors many of the unresolved tensions of race and class in Zimbabwe, yet he remains an integral part of Zimbabwe’s cricketing story and history.</p>

<p><span>Zimbabwe won the third Twenty20 (T20) international series 2-1 after beating Ireland by four (4) wickets in the final match at a packed Harare Sports Club on Sunday.</span></p>

<p><span>The series-deciding win is a significant achievement for the Zimbabwean side.</span></p>
<p><span>The southern African nation was missing several key players including Sikandar Raza, new man Gary Ballance, Blessing Muzarabani and Sean Williams for varying reasons.</span></p>
<p><span>Ireland made 141-9 off their 20 overs and it looked like they were on the way to a famous series win.</span></p>
<p><span>However, Zimbabwe captain <strong>Craig Ervine</strong> scored a half-century before Ryan Burl produced some sensational power-hitting at the end.</span></p>
<p><span>Ervine’s 54 off 43 deliveries remained in the game for long periods before the momentum appeared to swing back in Ireland’s favour when he was caught by Curtis Campher off the bowling of Mark Adair in the 16th over.</span></p>
<p><span>Burl, however, brought Zimbabwe back in control when he hit back-to-back sixes off George Dockrell in the 18th over as he made 30 runs off just 11 balls and the hosts eventually won with six balls to spare.</span></p>
<p><span>The sides meet in the first of three One Day International (ODIs) at the same venue on Wednesday.</span></p>

Zimbabwe Beat Ireland By 4 Wickets To Win The T20 Series

<p>Zimbabwe national cricket team fielding coach, Shepherd Makunura, has died.</p>
<p>Makunura, who was also Southern Rocks mentor, passed away at West End Hospital in Harare on Thursday morning. He had been ill for some time.</p>
<p>Makunura missed the International Cricket Council World Cup that was held between October and November due to ill health.</p>
<p>A Zimbabwe Cricket official confirmed Makunura’s death to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/sport/article/200005046/zim-cricket-coach-dies"><span><strong>NewsDay</strong></span></a> on Thursday morning.</p>
<p>Zimbabwe national cricket team batsman Tadiwanashe Marumani paid tribute to Makunura in a Twitter post. He wrote:</p>

Zimbabwe Cricket Coach Dies

<p><span>Zimbabwe’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup suffered a major blow after losing to Bangladesh at the iconic Gabba in Brisbane, Australia, Sunday.</span></p>
<p><span>Bangladesh won by three runs against Zimbabwe who Zimbabwe needed 16 from the final over.</span></p>
<p><span>Muzarabani missed the last-last ball and the show was over, ESPNCricinfo reported.</span></p>
<p><span>In the first half, Zimbabwe fell short. Muzarabani bowled just two overs and picked up two wickets, and the catching was poor.</span></p>
<p><span>The bigger blow came when Sikandar Raza, the big man for Zimbabwe, top-edged a pull. Afif Hossain took the catch, and the celebrations proved how big the moment was for Bangladesh. </span></p>
<p><span>Zimbabwe were 35 for 4 in the powerplay and very much on the back foot.</span></p>

T20I: Zimbabwe Cricket Won By 19 Runs Against Pakistan

<p>The International Cricket Council (ICC) has granted ODI and Test status to all full-member women’s cricket teams. The development means the women’s teams of Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, join the other ten teams that had the privilege of playing Test cricket.</p>
<p>Before the decision to grant ODI and Test status to all full-member women’s cricket teams, only India, West Indies, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, South Africa, Netherlands, Ireland, England, Australia, and Pakistan had the privilege of playing Test cricket.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/02/03/zc-workers-salaries-cut-as-icc-cuts-funding-to-zimbabwe-by-44-for-a-year/">ICC</a> board was quoted by BDcrictime as saying on Thursday, April 1:</p>

<p>Zimbabwe has been a full member of the ICC since 1992. The country’s men’s team has been playing Test cricket since then. The granting of test status to the Zimbabwe women’s cricket team means they now have the opportunity to test themselves regularly against the best teams.</p>

International Cricket Council Grants Zimbabwe Women Test, ODI Status

<p>The Zimbabwe national cricket Tuesday recorded a consolation victory in the 3rd and final One-Day International against Pakistan at Rawalpindi Cricket stadium in Pakistan.</p>
<p>Zimbabwe won the toss and opted to bat and seemed to be in a usual downward route until Sean Williams saved the day with an unbeaten 118 at the close of 50 overs to end the Chevrons’ innings at 278 for 6.</p>
<p>The Zimbabwean bowling attack, however, came out hopping mad, claiming 5 wickets for 85 runs within 20 overs.</p>
<p>Richard Ngarava and Donald Tiripano each contributed 2 of those wickets with the other coming from Blessing Muzarabani.</p>
<p>The match headed for a tight closing contest, with Ngarava having the task of sealing the victory for the Chevrons by bowling the last over.</p>
<p>The battle was fierce with the host in need of 5 runs from the last ball of the match to gain victory.</p>
<p>Muhammad Musa forced a super over as he hit Ngarava’s full ball outside off past the hands of the extra cover fielder, Tendai Chisoro to the boundary for 4 runs.</p>
<p>Zimbabwe eventually won with 3 balls to spare.</p>

Zimbabwe Cricket Records Consolation Win Against Pakistan

<p>Zimbabwe Cricket has launched the National Premier League (NPL) in which nine top clubs will be competing. The NPL is premised at giving cricket players some game time and national coaches the opportunity to identify talent.</p>
<p>Zimbabwe Cricket board chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani spoke during the official launch of the competition and expressed excitement over the NPL. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p>I want to congratulate Hamilton Masakadza, the director of cricket for the work that he has done with the team to bring this into fruition.</p>
<p>We would have wanted to do this back in the year but because of the Covid-19 situation, we couldn’t do that but there’s no time lost.</p>
<p>We have had more time to prepare and get ourselves in good standing and allow ourselves to launch this National Premier League today.</p>
<p>I’m calling to all cricket loving people to support this cause and all those that will have an opportunity to play for any club that they will play for to do it with all the energy and grace that is required so that we see a new breed of athletes.</p></blockquote>
<p>The Sports and Recreation Commission has given ZC the green light to have the club competition take place, with the clearance coming at the same time as the permission for the senior men’s team to tour Pakistan.</p>
<p>The country’s nine top clubs to participate in the inaugural NPL are Amakhosi (formerly Emakhandeni Cricket Club), Queens Sports Club, Midwest, Takashinga, Great Zimbabwe, Kings, Rainbow, Gladiators and Eastern.</p>
<p>The winner of the tournament is expected to pocket US$10 000.</p>

Cricket Results: Zimbabwe Vs South Africa

<p>In a statement, Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) said it will not be renewing almost all staff contracts as part of its new  financial strategy to reduce expenses</p>
<p>ZC had failed to pay its staff and players some of their outstanding dues before the International Cricket Council (ICC) intervened. The ICC bailout, which was structured at a meeting in Dublin, Ireland, at the end of June, comes with some stringent conditions for the way the funds have to be utilised. Said ZC:</p>

Zimbabwe Cricket Squad For Australia, Pakistan T20I Series

<p><span>Sikandar Raza Butt will miss the Zimbabwe national cricket team’s T-20 tri-series which will feature Australia and Pakistan next month.</span></p>
<p><span>After the T-20 tri-series, Zimbabwe will play Pakistan in a five-match one-day international series in Bulawayo. Raza will be playing at the Canada Global T-20 competition. T</span>he interim selection panel led by Walter Chawaguta released a squad for the tri-series which will be split into two groups to play a tri-series that will involve Kenya.</p>
<p>The triangular series will take place at the Old Hararians and Takashinga in the capital. Douglas Hondo has been named the Zimbabwe select coach and will be assisted by Stanley Timoni, who will also double as team manager. The t<span>ournament involving Kenya will give Zimbabwe’s interim head coach, Lalchand Rajput an opportunity to assess some of the players before the Twenty20 international (T20I) with Australia and Pakistan.</span></p>

Sikandar Raza To Miss T20 Tri-series

<p>Zimbabwe cricket players have boycotted training and have issued an ultimatum to Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC). The players who are owed three months’ salary and match fees say that unless these are paid by June 25, 2018, they will not be taking part in the July’s Twenty20 International (T20I) tri-series with Australia and Pakistan</p>
<p>Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, an unnamed ZC official said,</p>
<blockquote><p>Due to a very difficult financial situation beyond its control, ZC has been unable to meet some of its obligations, including paying player and staff salaries in time. However, because this is a matter of top priority, ZC has been working round the clock to address the challenge and, as promised to the players by our chairman, ZC expects to start processing payments this week.</p></blockquote>

Cricketers Issue Ultimatum Over Unpaid Allowances, Salaries, Threaten Boycott Of Australia, Pakistan Series

<p>The Board of Zimbabwe Cricket has appointed a three-man interim national selection panel. This follows the dismissal of Heath Streak and the previous selection panel after the Zimbabwe Chevrons failed to qualify for the 2019 Cricket World Cup to be hosted by England and Wales.</p>
<p>The new selection panel consists of Walter Chawaguta, Kenyon Ziehl and former captain Prosper Utseya. Chawaguta and Ziehl have previously served as selectors with Chawaguta being appointed as the Convener. The panel will pick the squad which will face Australia and Pakistan in a triangular Twenty20 International (T20I) series scheduled for July in Harare.</p>


Zimbabwe Cricket Appoint 3-Man Interim Selection Panel

<p>Zimbabwe Cricket will receive $94 million from the International Cricket Council (ICC)’s revised revenue-sharing model. The amount will cover the 8-year cycle from 2016-2023. This is $19 million than Zimbabwe would have received under the previous agreement.</p>
<p>Under the new revenue sharing model, the money will be distributed as follows:</p>

<li>Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI): USD 293 million</li>
<li>England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB): USD 143 million</li>
<li>Cricket South Africa (CSA): USD 132 million</li>
<li>West Indies Cricket Board (WICB): USD 132 million</li>
<li>Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB): USD 132 million</li>
<li>Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB): USD 132 million</li>
<li>Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC): USD 132 million</li>
<li>Cricket Australia (CA): USD 132 million</li>
<li>New Zealand Cricket: USD 132 million</li>
<li>Zimbabwe Cricket: USD 94 million</li>
</ul>
<p>39 Associate Members will receive a total funding of USD 280 million<br/>

Zimbabwe Cricket set to receive $94 million Windfall

<p>Zimbabwe’s under-19 cricket team won by 5 wickets against South Africa’s under-19 team with 37 balls remaining in a Tri-Nations series underway in Cape Town, South Africa.</p>
<p>This becomes Zimbabwe’s first win in the tournament having lost to South Africa in their first by 76 runs and by 8 wickets, with 223 balls remaining to Sri Lanka. Their next match will be tomorrow against Sri Lanka.</p>
