The United Nations has given permission to Zambia and Zimbabwe to construct a $5 billion hydropower dam near Victoria Falls. The dam, called the Batoka Gorge project, will have a capacity of 2,400 megawatts and is located 47 kilometres away from the famous waterfall.
Environmentalists have expressed concerns about the project, as it may affect the natural beauty of Victoria Falls, which is a popular tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. However, the authority overseeing the dam’s construction has stated that it has received clearance from the UN agency to proceed with the project. Munyaradzi Munodawafa, chief executive officer of the Zambezi River Authority, told Bloomberg in an interview that Unesco:

sent inspectors in 2022 after complaints by some environmentalists that the Batoka project was going to affect the Victoria Falls.

During a meeting of the World Heritage Committee, the inspectors reviewed reports and presentations related to the Batoka Gorge project. Munodawafa stated that the inspectors agreed that the project could proceed based on the information provided.
The construction of the Batoka Gorge project, which includes a high wall and power plants, was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and funding concerns. However, it is now set to proceed. The project is led by General Electric Co. and China’s Power Construction Corp. Both Zambia and Zimbabwe, who already share another hydropower facility called Kariba, have faced challenges in meeting their power needs. The African Development Bank is arranging financing for the project, which has been designed to minimize its impact on Victoria Falls.
However, tensions between Zambia and Zimbabwe still exist regarding the project. Zambia’s energy minister, Peter Kapala, announced in June plans to terminate the agreement with General Electric (GE) and Power Construction due to cost concerns and the possibility of a smaller plant being more suitable. Additionally, the rehabilitation of the plunge pool beneath the Kariba Dam, the largest man-made reservoir, is expected to be finished by early 2025. The African Development Bank (AfDB) is also providing advice for the Mphanda Nkuwa hydropower project in Mozambique, which has a cost of $4.5 billion and a capacity of 1,500 megawatts.

United Nations Permits Zimbabwe & Zambia To Construct A $5 Billion Hydropower Dam Near Victoria Falls

Zimbabwean-born South African businessman Sikhumbuzo Manduna has shared the challenges he faced while traveling from Zimbabwe to Zambia.
Manduna, who was driving his Ford Ranger, had obtained all the necessary documents to travel through South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Zambia. However, when he reached the border at Chirundu, he faced extensive questioning from a border official who suspected the car might be stolen. After a three-hour wait, the official called the police from Lusaka, who arrived and arrested Manduna.
He said despite providing all the required paperwork, including proof of purchase through Capitec Bank, insurance records, and company details, the police refused to release him. Interpol was even involved, confirming that the car was not stolen. Manduna was detained for a total of seven days, during which he believed that the police were seeking a bribe. Despite his attempts to cooperate and provide all necessary evidence, the release of his car was delayed.
Manduna said he embarked on a business trip from Johannesburg to Zimbabwe and then to Zambia, driving his Ford Ranger purchased through Capitec Bank. He had all the necessary documents and permission to travel across multiple countries. However, at the Chirundu border, the border official subjected him to extensive questioning about the car’s ownership and potential theft. After a three-hour wait, Manduna was called into the office only to face another ordeal—finding out that the official had called the police from Lusaka during that time to detain him. He narrated:

As we were arguing on the issue after I had presented my passport, car documents, bank papers, insurance records and company details since the vehicle was registered under my company, police arrived in style with blue lights in a Madza BT50; five police officers, three armed with AK-47 assault rifles. The customs officer pointed at me and said that is the guy claiming to be the car owner. I was shocked by what subsequently followed. Police pounced on me and said I was under arrest. I demanded that on top of the papers I had presented, I should be allowed to call my insurance firm and the agent I deal with, which I did. The insurance explained that the car was legitimately bought through Capitec and they had all the papers, which they were ready to send to the border officials if needs be. All that was rejected.
Police then told me they were now taking me to Lusaka to deal with the matter because they suspected the car was stolen even when all documents showed that assumption was false. They drove me in their car as they refused me to even sit in my own car. When we got to Lusaka Central Police Station, I was told the boss named Chomba wanted to see me but it could only be the following day which meant I had to be detained in cells, which they did. I was removed from the cells the following day to see the said boss around 9:30am.
Upon his arrival, he was confrontational; he seized my car keys and the car itself, demanding that I should prove the vehicle was mine. I was told the arresting officer was Detective Constable Mthengwa. So we had to restart the process of providing documents all over again. I gave them all the documents, called my insurance firm and showed them emails between the bank and myself, proving that the car was bought through the bank which had to approve my driving of the vehicle outside South Africa into Zimbabwe, then Zambia.
Interpol was also brought into the fray. On Monday, 28 August, Captain Pieter De Villiers sent an email to Lusaka Central Police Station saying the car was not stolen. Remember I had been in detention for five days at that point without a charge. Arbitrary detention. Just imagine the pressure and anger.

De Villiers urgently informed the Lusaka police that Manduna had been arrested for allegedly possessing a stolen car. He provided the details of the Ford Ranger and confirmed that it was not reported as stolen in South Africa. De Villiers requested the Zambian police to help Manduna retrieve his car, stating that it was owned by Capitec, and the bank had approved its use outside South Africa during the specified dates.
The car involved in the incident is registered under Manduna’s company, Andiswa Phakade (Pty) Ltd, with an address in Johannesburg. Despite providing all necessary documents, including support from his insurance company and Interpol, Zambian police detained Manduna for seven days. Manduna believed that the police were demanding a bribe, as their behavior suggested. He provided extensive documentation, such as his passport, ID, driver’s license, vehicle registration papers, and a letter of authority from the bank. Despite all evidence proving the legitimacy of the car, the police continued to detain him.

Zimbabwean-born South African businessman Narrates His Difficult Journey To Zambia

The Zimbabwean Government uses a broad definition of journalism, which includes any form of interview, filming, or photography.

Big business opportunities are found in places where the drinks are expensive. In fact, in places where they sell cheap Tea, the only people you will find there are people who will be asking you for money. They even clap when you come knowing ‘big buyer’ has come.
3. Stop being Lazy: “Man ooh Man, why art thou Lazy?” You are too lazy for your own good. You sleep the whole day and blame the govt for your poverty. “A Little Sleep, a Little Slumber, poverty shall overtake you like a political cadre in overalls”. A lot of men are just lazy when it comes to making money. They have enough energy to give a woman five ****** but have no energy to start one organization, hmmm that’s why it is so easy for men to manufacture children than it is to make even pegs for putting children’s clothes on the line..
4. Know Productive Things: If you keep too much junk in your head, you get a junk life. I know a lot of men who are so sharp when you are talking about girls, about soccer and about street politics, Who is Rich who is not, Who has a good house but you can’t bring a topic about investment, innovation and business, they start looking at their phone, yawning or saying bye.. Useless things, videos and memes go viral fast than constructive things.. A man must know how to do at least one productive thing (have one skill) even without having gone to college…
5. Get Connected to Big Men Who are better than you: A lot of men are failing because they are not mentored. They don’t have anyone to whom they can sit down and listen, with obedience. In the old days, older men would sit young men down and show them how to hunt and kill animals… and no man was considered a man enough until he has personally killed an animal… now these men of nowadays are not mentored and can’t even kill a bird.. There are men out there who have made it in life, find a way to get mentored by big men who are making waves and impacting people in our community.
6. Work: Stop Spending your time whole day just praying fasting yet you know that the Bible tells you that God will bless the works of your hands yes yes the blessing finds you on your way doing something.

The government has announced that it has granted the Zimbabwe Mission In South Africa a temporary order to allow the clearance of undocumented bodies for repatriation for burial in Zimbabwe because South Africa is running out of bodies storage space, The Herald reports.
This was revealed by Women’s Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister Sithembiso Nyoni during a post Cabinet briefing when she said:
<blockquote>Following recent developments in South Africa, where the time of storage of bodies has been reduced, Cabinet resolved to grant the
Zimbabwe Mission in South Africa a special waiver during the Covid-19 pandemic period to clear the repatriation of undocumented Zimbabwean bodies for burial back home on the basis of submitted affidavits from the chief or village head and relatives in Zimbabwe.</blockquote>
South Africa COVID-19 cases have breached the half a million mark and South Africa is reportedly digging one million graves just to stay ready for the worst-case scenario. However, Zimbabwe’s Southern neighbour has also reported a 68% recovery rate.

Govt Authorises South Africa To Clear Undocumented Zimbabwean Bodies For Burial In Zimbabwe

A report by the Stockholm International Peace and Research Institute (Sipri) a military intelligence think-tank claims the ZNA splashed over 92 Million in murky arms deal between the year 2000 and 2006 The Zimbabwe Independent reports.
According to the publication, these are some of the deals that were done during the time of a dire economic crisis that eventually led to the total collapse of the economy:
<blockquote>The Sipri report, titled Transfer of Major Weapons: Deals with Deliveries or Orders Made From 1995 to 2019, for the first-time sheds light on Harare’s acquisition of arms from Asia and Eastern Europe at a time of economic collapse, while neglecting social service delivery and clocking up massive debt.
According to Sipri, Zimbabwe ordered 60 units of M43 (120mm) mortar in 1999 from Bulgaria and took delivery of the shipment in 2000 at a cost of US$1 million.
In that period, Zimbabwe’s economy suffered unprecedented decline, triggered by chaotic land seizures, unbudgeted disbursement of millions of dollars in compensation to veterans of the country’s liberation war and the costly foray into the Democratic Republic of Congo’s civil war.
According to Sipri, Zimbabwe, isolated by Western governments, paid US$55 million between 2004 and 2006 to China to bolster its military arsenal. It bought a range of fighter aircraft and infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) in 2004 that included 10 units of Type 85 IFVs, five units of Type 89/ZSD 89 armoured personnel carriers and six K-8 Karakorum jet trainer aircraft. The purchases were made in 2004 at a time when the British government refused to sell crucial spare parts to Zimbabwe for the maintenance of Hawk fighter aircraft.
Zimbabwe had last received a shipment of military hardware from the United Kingdom (UK) in 1992 at a cost of US$22 million, Sipri reports.
According to the report, the purchase of a fleet of six K-8 Karakorum jet trainer aircraft from China in 2006 cost Zimbabwe US$21 million. 
Three years earlier, Harare had taken delivery of three Mig-230M aircraft for US$15 million from Libya during the rule of Muammar Gaddafi, who was later deposed.
According to Sipri, all the countries which sold arms to Zimbabwe declared the transactions, but Harare did not. Sipri also shows that Zimbabwe was active in the arms bazaars of Eastern Europe, where it bought a range of aircraft accessories from Ukraine in 2006. They included 12 units of AL-25 turbofan engines for the K-8 Karakorum aircraft. From 2001 to 2006, Harare shelled out US$17 million to Kiev for military hardware, Sipri reveals.</blockquote>

ZNA Spent $92 Million In Weapons Deals During The Time Of Economic Collapse While Neglecting Social Service Delivery And Amassing Debt  - Report

A Pan African business delegation visiting Zimbabwe has said that the country is wrongly perceived by the outside world, a ZBC article reports.
The delegates are reported to have urged the government to come up with strategies that ensure that tourists and investors have memorable experiences when they visit.
Dr. Babalola Omoniyi and Brigadier General Dr. Wallace Williams, who attended the just-ended Pan African Business Summit in Gweru, said experiences on the ground are not tallying with what they expected. Dr. Omonoyi said:
<blockquote>My wife told me before I left Nigeria that I should be extra careful when going out during the night but I am surprised that here I am, I do not even know the colour of a police uniform or even a soldier.</blockquote>
Dr. Williams also said that he is excited by the transformation in the economic environment. He said:
<blockquote>The country is really open for business and I am excited at the various strides the country has made in improving the economic environment.</blockquote>

Zimbabwe Suffering From Negative Publicity - Pan African Delegates

The Zimbabwe Chevrons defeated Afghanistan in an International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup qualifier match played at Queens Sports Club Club in Bulawayo. The hosts managed to win by just 2 runs after the match went into the last over.
Earlier on, Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat first and only managed to make 196 runs. The top order went out cheaply as Solomon Mire, Cephas Zhuwao and Hamilton Masakadza managed to score only four, zero, and three runs respectively. Brendan Taylor managed to steady the shape and top-scored for the host with 89 runs with the help of Sikandar Raza who scored 60 runs.
Afghanistan started the match well but a late collapse saw them losing three quick wickets and needing to score 19 runs from 46 balls with a single wicket in hand. However, some pedestrian bowling from the hosts resulted in the match going to the last over where the Afghans required four runs off the final over which was bowled by Brian Vittorri. Vittori managed to get the job done with two runs remaining when he had Shapoor Zadran caught by Brendan Taylor. Rahmat Shah top scored for Afghanistan with 69 runs while Mohammed Nabi had 51 runs.
With this victory, Zimbabwe now lies in second place in Group B with 4points. Scotland tops the table with 4 points as well by virtue of higher net run rate.
