The ZIFA Electoral Committee has revealed that outgoing Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman Farai Jere has been barred from competing in the upcoming ZIFA elections due to the late submission of essential documents.
Jere, along with notable figures such as Twine Phiri, Walter Magaya, Temba Mliswa, and Benjani Mwaruwari, did not meet the eligibility criteria and were therefore excluded from the final list of candidates for the ZIFA presidency.
Jere contested his exclusion, asserting that he was unjustly dismissed from the race, as he possesses the required five O Level passes.
However, a leaked letter from ZIFA National Committee chairman Lincoln Mutasa indicated that the issue stemmed from discrepancies in the submitted certificates, including a name mismatch, which was corrected after the deadline. Reads the letter in part:

I regret to inform you that, following the integrity checks required for candidacy in the upcoming Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Executive Committee elections, it has been determined that you have not met the necessary criteria to proceed as a candidate. The ZIFA Normalisation Committee, acting as the ZIFA Electoral Committee in accordance with Article 85(9), on Monday, December 23, announced the names of all the candidates who have met the eligibility criteria stipulated in the ZIFA Statutes, 2024.
Those who have passed rigorous integrity and ethics checks will contest for positions on the ZIFA Board in the upcoming elections.
The elections, scheduled for January 25, 2025, will mark the end of the Normalisation Committee’s term, paving the way for a new board elected by councillors to take over the governance of football in Zimbabwe.
There is no place for PHD Ministries founder Walter Magaya, PSL chairman Farai Jere, politician Temba Mliswa, and Warriors legend Benjani Mwariwari on the ballot when the ZIFA councillors elect the new leadership next month.

ZIFA Announces Eligible Candidates For Upcoming Elections; Magaya, Mliswa Fail Test

The ZIFA Ethics and Integrity Committee, working with the Normalisation Committee (NC), is set to announce today, December 23, the names of candidates vying for positions on the ZIFA Board in the upcoming elections.
The elections, which are scheduled for January 25, 2025, will mark the end of the NC’s term, paving the way for a new board elected by councillors to take over the governance of football in Zimbabwe.
Since the dismissal of the Felton Kamambo board on April 23, 2022, ZIFA has functioned without a substantive board. Gift Banda, who temporarily filled the position, served until July 11, 2023, when FIFA appointed the NC, chaired by Lincoln Mutasa.
In July, FIFA extended the terms of three NC members: chairman Mutasa, legal expert Nyasha Samanyandwe, and women’s football icon Rosemary Mugadza.
Cynthia Malaba, who managed the finance portfolio, concluded her role after establishing the necessary structures and policies.
Similarly, Sikhumbuzo Ndebele stepped down after successfully filling the positions of technical director and head of coach education.
The roadmap leading to the ZIFA elections included an annual general meeting on November 22, where the draft constitution was adopted.
The elections will be conducted in accordance with this new constitution, which stipulates that the president and male deputy must possess at least O-level qualifications.
Following the meeting, the nomination process opened on December 4 and closed on December 11. ZIFA set December 23 as the date for announcing candidates who have passed rigorous integrity and ethics checks, which involved verification with educational institutions and police clearances.
Once the candidate list is published, individuals will be allowed to commence their official campaigns, with final confirmations scheduled for January 15, 2025.
Among those running for the ZIFA presidency are Nqobile Magwizi, Benjani Mwaruwari, Farai Jere, Marshall Gore, Martin Kweza, Twine Phiri, Philemon Machana, Temba Mliswa, and Makwinji Soma-Phiri.
For the vice presidency, candidates include Gift Banda, Peter Dube, Kennedy Ndebele, Omega Sibanda, and James Takavada.
The new constitution also provides for a female vice-president, with potential candidates including Loveness Mukura, Mavis Gumbo, Joyce Kapota, Patience Mutumwa, Winnet Muropa, and Beaullah Msara.

ZIFA Normalisation Committee Set To Release Candidate List

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Normalisation Committee has announced the date for the ZIFA Executive Committee elections.
The Elective Congress will take place on 25 January 2024.
The nomination process is now open, and nomination forms are available on the ZIFA website, at the ZIFA NC offices in Milton Park, and at the ZIFA House. ZIFA said in a statement:

Please be advised that the ZIFA Executive Committee Election will be conducted in line with the Elections Roadmap, ZIFA Statutes 2024 and ZIFA Electoral Code 2024.
This process will culminate in the Elective Ordinary Congress, scheduled for the 25th of January 2025.

The upcoming elections will be conducted under the amended ZIFA constitution which was recently approved by the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) and registered with FIFA.
Key changes in the constitution include a requirement for candidates to have passed at least five Ordinary Level subjects, including English Language, and to have been ordinarily resident in Zimbabwe for the past two years.
Additionally, all members of the Executive Committee must not have been previously convicted or sentenced for any criminal offence and must be at least 40 years old.

ZIFA has set a date for the Executive Committee elections on 25th January 2024. Anyone interested can get nomination forms online or at certain offices. The elections will follow new rules, like candidates needing to pass five exams and not having criminal records. All executive members must be at least 40 years old. ZIFA Elective Ordinary Congress Date Set

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has set the ticket prices for the Warriors’ crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Kenya on Friday evening at R50 for general admission, with VIP tickets priced at R1800. The match will be played at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa, with kick-off scheduled for 6 PM.

The Warriors, currently in second place in Group J with 8 points, must avoid defeat to qualify. A win in this match and their final match against Cameroon will see them top the group.
Cameroon currently leads the group with 11 points, after they were held to a goalless draw by Namibia in South Africa on Wednesday, opening the door for Zimbabwe to potentially leapfrog them.
If Zimbabwe wins both of their two remaining matches, they will finish top of the group with 14 points, while Cameroon will remain on 11. Kenya, who have 4 points, will have 7 points if they beat Namibia in their final fixture.
However, Zimbabwe will not qualify if they lose to both Kenya and Cameroon and if the Harambee Stars then defeat Namibia, overtaking Zimbabwe and finishing with 10 points.
Due to the unavailability of suitable stadiums in Zimbabwe, the national team was forced to play this crucial match at a neutral venue.
All local football grounds were condemned by CAF ahead of the qualifiers, leaving Zimbabwe with no choice but to host its away games in South Africa.

ZIFA Confirms Ticket Prices For Warriors, Kenya AFCON Qualifier

Zimbabwean football legend Moses Chunga has weighed in on the recent controversy surrounding the Zimbabwe Football Association’s (ZIFA) new eligibility requirements for its chairperson.
One of the new rules is that candidates must have at least five Ordinary Level (O-Level) passes. Chunga, however, argued that footballers who fail to meet this academic benchmark should not be labelled as “madofo”—a derogatory Shona term meaning “dull” or “slow to understand.”
Rosemary Mugadza, the ZIFA Normalisation Committee (NC) member is quoted saying:

I was given a chance by my parents to go to school and they made sure that I have the five O Levels.
I’m a CAF instructor, where a certain level of education is required for you to participate in terms of imparting knowledge to the other fellow females.
It’s the right time for us former footballers to enrol into night schools to get the required academics that we ought to have.
Also, if you look at the current situation that we have, the current crop of players, there are scholarships that are offered for them.

ZIFA Normalisation Committee chairperson Lincoln Mutasa said:

5 O levels are for seeing someone’s ability to be able to read and write, understand numbers and communicate with our principles whether at CAF or FIFA.
That’s basically the reason for that 5 O-level qualification requirement. It’s not a major hurdle, it’s a basic stepping stone only to distinguish those who can’t read and write.

However, Chunga said some footballers and former footballers lack five O’Level passes not because they are “dull” or unintelligent, but because, during their teenage years, they faced the difficult choice between dedicating themselves to football or pursuing formal education.
He pointed out that many young players prioritised their athletic careers, often sacrificing their schooling in pursuit of professional football. Those who follow my posts know that I started playing football for Lytton Primary School B team when I was only around 8 years old.
From that age onwards football was all that mattered to me. I would spend most of my time training, and nurturing my talent.
A footballer trains their muscle between ages 6 and 18. Qualities like speed of thought, accuracy, endurance, resistance, strength and skill have to be mastered between 6 and 18. Fact.
By the time one is 18, they would have reached the end of growth. (Fact). So if one is to excel in football he has to spend most of his teenage years on the field of training.
Unfortunately, this is also the time when this same guy is needed in the classroom. In the end, he/she has to make a difficult decision, that of choosing football ahead of formal education.
Those who mix football with formal education and excel in both are the rare ones. In conclusion, let’s not be too quick to judge these footballers.
They spent hours and hours practising so that you may be entertained. Please let’s not humiliate them.

Footballers Without 5 O-Levels Aren't "Madofo", Says Moses Chunga

The Zimbabwe Football Association’s (ZIFA) Appeals Committee will meet on Thursday this week to review the case between Karoi United and Scottland FC.
Karoi United is appealing a decision by the ZIFA Northern Region Soccer League (NRSL) to award Scottland FC a 3-0 win from their abandoned match on September 15.
The match was called off in the 88th minute with the score tied at 1-1 after referee Mathew Dingo was reportedly hit by a missile and could not continue.
The NRSL charged Karoi United with causing the abandonment and awarded Scottland FC three points, which moved them to the top of the league.
Scottland FC secured the top spot in the NRSL with 87 points after a 3-1 win over Black Mambas on Friday, finishing two points ahead of second-placed MWOS.
ZIFA chief executive officer Yvonne Manwa formally acknowledged Karoi United’s appeal and notified them of the scheduled hearing. She wrote:

ZIFA To Deliberate On Karoi United’s Appeal

Businessman and educationist Innocent Benza has ruled himself out of the race for the ZIFA presidency in the upcoming elections, which are set to take place in early 2025.
The long-awaited elections will follow the expiration of the ZIFA Normalisation Committee’s term in January 2025.
This week, ZIFA’s new constitution was officially registered by the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), clearing the way for the elections to proceed.
The 54-year-old Benza, who is also the Member of Parliament for Mutasa Central (ZANU PF) and a member of the parliamentary portfolio committee on sport, revealed that he has been receiving persistent calls from the football community urging him to consider a bid for the ZIFA presidency.
Despite the pressure, Benza has decided not to enter the race. He said:

Of late I have been receiving a lot of calls from stakeholders to consider running for the position of ZIFA president.
It is not something that I have been thinking about. In fact, I am ready to support whoever wants to go for it as long as they are competent and fit the required criteria.
I love football enough and becoming its leader would have been quite exciting, especially with so much support from stakeholders who are making a lot of calls for me to become the ZIFA leader.
I am really humbled to receive all those calls from key football people. It shows that, they have trust in me.
I am not entirely ruling it out but for now, I am choosing not to contest and I will support the right candidate for the post.
I have been in football administration for close to 30 years and we have also been running other sports like cricket and we have regularly provided national team players.
I hope to support the right candidate for the position based on different factors.

Benza and his son Tino made history as the first— and still the only—father-son duo to play in Zimbabwe’s top-flight football league.
Benza is a prominent businessman and football stakeholder, owning several schools and football teams.
He is the proprietor of Premier Soccer League (PSL) side Herentals, which is currently in 5th place in the league standings with two matches remaining in the 2024 season.
In addition to Herentals, Benza also owns Herentals U20, which competes in the Northern Region Soccer League, and Herentals Queens, the serial champions of the Women’s Soccer League.
His football investments extend further, with four Herentals Division 2 teams based in Harare, Rusape, Kadoma, and Bulawayo.
Benza also runs a thriving academy that caters to players aged 4 to 20, nurturing young talent across multiple age groups.
Meanwhile, the race for the ZIFA presidency is heating up, with several high-profile candidates expressing interest in running.
Among them are Farai Jere, the current PSL chairman and owner of CAPS United FC; Walter Magaya, founder of the Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries, and owner of Yadah FC; Richard Mazodze, owner of FC Wangu Mazodze in the ZIFA Eastern Region Soccer League Division 1; Marshal Gore, a UK-based football administrator; and Philemon Machana, a former ZIFA executive.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has warned aspiring coaches about unscrupulous individuals organising unauthorised coaching courses and workshops under ZIFA’s name.
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 31, ZIFA clarified that it does not endorse or organise any courses, workshops, or events unless they are communicated through its official channels. ZIFA said:

It has come to our attention that unauthorized individuals may be promoting or organizing coaching courses and workshops under the name of ZIFA.
Please be advised that ZIFA does NOT endorse or organize any courses, workshops, or events unless they are communicated through our official channels.
For your safety and to avoid scams, only attend ZIFA events that are announced via our official website and verified social media platforms. Do not trust any other sources that claim affiliation with us.
Any unauthorized use of ZIFA’s name and logo is illegal and may result in prosecution. We are committed to protecting our community and the integrity of the Zimbabwe Football Association.

In one unauthorised course, the organisers were charging US$150 for aspiring coaches who wished to participate in a so-called Level One soccer coaching course scheduled from November 4 to 12, 2024, at Sakubva Primary School in Mutare.

ZIFA Warns Against Unauthorised Coaching Courses

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) and the Premier Soccer League (PSL) have expressed their condolences to Highlanders Football Club following the passing of the club’s chief executive officer, Sihlangu Dlodlo.
Dlodlo was found dead at his home in Nketa 9, Bulawayo, on Monday at the age of 60. Friends reported that he was last seen alive on Saturday, two days before his body was discovered.
Concerned family and friends had to break down his gate to find him unresponsive through a window.
In a statement, ZIFA said Dlodlo’s death has left an irreplaceable void, impacting not only Highlanders but the entire Zimbabwean football community. Said ZIFA:

A Facebook post he made on October 16 is now being viewed as a potential suicide note, raising concerns about his mental well-being prior to this tragic incident. In the post, Dlodlo wrote in Ndebele:

Many of his associates initially dismissed the post, not giving it much thought, as Dlodlo was known for his playful demeanour.

Premier Soccer League boss and CAPS United president Farai Jere is reportedly planning to join the race for the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) president.

The NewsHawks reported sources as saying Jere, a businessman and Murehwa West Member of Parliament, will soon make an official announcement of his candidacy.
Jere is credited with bringing stability to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and restoring order at CAPS United, leading them to the group stage of the CAF Champions League.
Jere has previously served as a ZIFA board member.
ZIFA is currently led by a Normalisation Committee appointed by FIFA to address issues within the previous administration and local football.

The new constitution was ratified by congress on Friday, 18 October.
In a post-Annual General Meeting press conference, ZIFA Normalisation Committee chairman Lincoln Mutasa said that the new constitution will enable ZIFA elections early next year.
He said candidates for the ZIFA presidency must now have five ‘O’ Levels to ensure qualified leadership. 
Mutasa also encouraged players to balance their football careers with academic pursuits if they aspire to lead ZIFA in the future. He said:

The Brave Warriors are set to host the Warriors at Orlando Stadium in South Africa for a Group J matchday 4 fixture in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The match, scheduled to kick off at 3 PM CAT, will be played behind closed doors.
ZIFA spokesperson Mike Madoda confirmed to <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/namibia-cite-matchday-financial-incapacitation-for-afcon-qualifier-against-zimbabwe/">Zimpapers Sports Hub</a> that the NFA has indicated their inability to cover the necessary costs. Said Madoda:

Both matches will be held in South Africa, as neither Namibia nor Zimbabwe has a CAF-certified stadium suitable for hosting international games.

Namibia Blames Financial Challenges For Fan Exclusion In AFCON Qualifier Against Zimbabwe

CAPS United coach Lloyd Chitembwe has castigated Warriors coach Michael Nees and the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) after being barred from using his captain, Godknows Murwira, in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match against Dynamos at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday.
Both Murwira and Dynamos vice-captain Emmanuel Jalai were among the few locally-based players called up by Nees for the upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Namibia, scheduled for October 10 and 14. 
Neither player participated in the Harare Derby, which CAPS United won 2-1.
In an ironic twist, Dynamos goalkeeper Martin Mapisa, who is also part of the Warriors squad, was permitted to play in the match.
Chitembwe criticised the inconsistency, pointing out that players from around the world who were called up for international duty were allowed to compete for their clubs on Sunday. Said Chitembwe (via <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/chitembwe-blasts-nees-zifa/">The Herald</a>):

What irks me most is the fact that, when coach Jairos Tapera was in charge, the PSL refused to release the players and they had the right to do that because it was within the rules.
People now tend to listen to an expat coach more than they listen to a fellow Africans. We don’t need those things in our football.
We don’t want someone who comes in and thinks he is a big elephant in the room.
What is more embarrassing is the fact that they went on to threaten players, that if you don’t listen to this call up then we will not consider you for future assignments. What is that?
This is clowning and people are grandstanding and it’s just unfortunate.

Chitembwe Slams Nees, ZIFA Over Murwira's Unavailability For Harare Derby

Controversial Harare-based preacher Walter Magaya is open to potentially running for the presidency of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA).
Magaya, who owns the Premier Soccer League (PSL) club Yadah and The Heart Stadium in Waterfalls, Harare, claimed that both former and current women’s football administrators have encouraged him to take on the leadership role at ZIFA.
On Sunday, during the inaugural Heart Women Soccer League Tournament final, former ZIFA Women Soccer League board member Cecilia Gambe urged Magaya to consider a run for the presidency.
In response, Magaya, who founded and leads Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries, said he would first consult with his family and church before making any decisions. He said:

A group calling itself “The Candidate”, comprising “progressive football individuals”, is challenging the decision by the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Normalisation Committee to hold an elective Annual General Meeting (AGM) with the current regional affiliates whose term of office has allegedly expired.
In a letter dated August 21, 2024, addressed to ZIFA Normalisation Committee Chairperson Lincoln Mutasa, The Candidate’s Chairperson Rtd Major Special Matarirano said the regional bodies should be replaced by normalization committees before the AGM is held. He wrote:

The recent call and announcement of the intention for the ZIFA AGM have prompted our assembly to question the sincerity of the NC in changing the fortunes of football in Zimbabwe for the good.
On 10 August 2024, the ZIFA General Secretary, Yvonne Manwa published a letter to several defunct functionaries whose mandate ceased years ago, inviting them to attend a voting AGM in October 2024.
It should be made known to the NC that the current regional bodies, who in the Manwa invitation letters, were to constitute 16 members from the 4 regions in the 60 purported ZIFA members, are out of their mandate and by now were supposed to have been normalised in the same way the Felton Kamambo led ZIFA board was replaced by the NC upon the lifting of sanctions on Zimbabwe football in 2022.
This was supposed to be the issue, and it remains pertinent as a gap to be quickly filled before any AGM can be called for.

In a notice dated August 10, and released by chief executive Yvonne Mapika Manwa, ZIFA set October 18 as the date of the annual meeting in Harare. She wrote:

According to Article 24, the members exercise their voting rights through their official delegates, who will also take part in debates of the AGM.
Each official delegate has a single vote and may not represent more than one member.
Also present will be the ZIFA Normalisation Committee members, secretariat staff, Sports and Recreation Commission representative, Zimbabwe Olympic Committee representative and Auditors representatives.
Each member is humbly requested to submit names and passport-size photos of their delegates to the secretariat on or before the 31st of August 2024.

Meanwhile, according to <a href="https://www.zbcnews.co.zw/sport/date-for-zifa-elections-set/">ZBC</a>, the ZIFA Executive Committee elections are set to be held on the 11th of January 2025 under a new constitution.
The report says ZIFA held an Extraordinary General Meeting on Saturday, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), FIFA, and the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) all represented at the EGM.

A group called "The Candidate" is mad that ZIFA wants to have a meeting with old regional clubs. They think the clubs should be replaced before the meeting. Football Group "The Candidate" Contests ZIFA's Plan To Hold AGM With Defunct Regional Affiliates

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) and the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that defines the relationship between the two entities and establishes opportunities for collaboration in the management of football in Zimbabwe.
The MoU outlines the respective duties and responsibilities of ZIFA and the SRC, aiming to prevent the recurrence of clashes that previously led to Zimbabwe’s suspension from international football two years ago.
The signing of the MoU was one of the recommendations made by FIFA when Zimbabwe’s suspension from international football was lifted last year.
The signing ceremony, held in Harare, was attended by high-ranking officials, including representatives from FIFA, SRC Chairman Gerald Mlotshwa, and ZIFA Normalisation Committee Chairperson Lincoln Mutasa.

I think the background of all this is well documented; the FIFA suspension of ZIFA, its lifting last year and the conditions that were set at the lifting of that suspension.
The important condition was a stipulation by FIFA itself that the NC and the SRC needed to sign an MOU regarding the management of their relationship going forward.
That was because FIFA itself had greatly appreciated the issues that had been raised by the SRC and the need to find a common platform between SRC and ZIFA essentially as to how they will collaborate going forward, obviously with respect for the ZIFA and FIFA constitutions as well as the laws of Zimbabwe.
There was no great rush to have it drafted and signed, and that was deliberate. I think we needed to allow the NC to do its work to understand the issues that needed to be addressed and to ensure that those issues were captured in the MOU.
I think as we move towards what I would call the home run in so far as the NC’s mandate is concerned, this has become the appropriate time to sign the MOU because it will not just govern the relationship between the NC and the SRC, but with the new incoming administration of ZIFA as well, going forward…
FIFA itself has played a big role in so far as the importance of this MOU is concerned. So, this is also endorsed by FIFA as well.

According to the MoU, the SRC’s Roles and Responsibilities include:

<li>Create an environment that supports and enhances the development of ZIFA and the sport of football in Zimbabwe.</li>
<li>Endeavour to provide financial resources in order to fund some of the main ZIFA activities especially in relation to the activities of the different National Teams representing Zimbabwe in international competitions.</li>
<li>Advise the government of the needs of ZIFA.</li>
</ul>
ZIFA’s roles and Responsibilities include:

<li>To proactively formulate policies that provide for safeguarding in football and gender inclusivity.</li>
<li>To implement a robust Media/ Public Relations Management arm to keep stakeholders informed on key issues relating to football matters.</li>

New Era For Zimbabwean Football As ZIFA, SRC Sign MoU

Walter Magaya, the owner of the Heart Group which owns the Heart Stadium in Waterfalls, Harare, has threatened to sue ZIFA Normalisation Committee chairperson Lincoln Mutasa.
This comes after ZIFA condemned the stadium as unfit to host international matches.
In a statement on August 5, the ZIFA Normalisation Committee claimed that during preliminary inspections, the Heart Stadium failed to produce a required Stadium Safety and Security Certificate.
The statement also alleged that the stadium lacks a media tribune, a designated area for vulnerable people, and its ablution facilities do not meet standards.
However, through his lawyer Admire Rubaya, Magaya has refuted these claims, accusing Mutasa of having an “insatiable” desire to destroy his football investments.
In a letter of demand dated August 6, the Heart Group stated that Mutasa or ZIFA had never actually inspected the stadium.
The Heart Group has demanded that Mutasa retract his statement or face a US$1 million lawsuit in damages for allegedly lying about the status of their stadium. Part of the letter reads:

Our client was shocked that you claim to have conducted preliminary inspections of the Heart Stadium regards its suitability to host Ngezi Platinum Stars and Dynamos Football Clubs’ preliminary CAF Competitions Fixtures.
It is very unprofessional for you to communicate falsehoods to the nation in the absence of a physical inspection.
Our client wants you to advise the nation as to when you requested to formally conduct the so-called preliminary inspections specifically to ascertain if our client’s stadium is suitable to host the CAF Competitions Fixtures.
Our client instructs that it never received any formal request from ZIFA regards being had to the alleged preliminary inspection.
Furthermore, it challenges you to provide the nation with that request as well as the invitation and/or confirmation from the Heart Stadium administration authorising you to visit his state-of-the-art stadium for the preliminary inspections.
If you do not produce the same, it simply means that you have misled our football-loving nation.
One wonders why you would stoop so low for purposes of claiming that you had done preliminary inspections yet none have been conducted.
It is our client’s contention that you have an insatiable appetite to destroy our client’s reputation in circumstances where your role is to administer Zimbabwean football to be world-class.

Magaya Threatens ZIFA With US$1 Million Lawsuit For Condemning The Heart Stadium

The Zimbabwean government has praised the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA for their initiatives to improve safety and security at football stadiums in the country.
This comes after CAF and FIFA recently held a Safe Stadium Initiative Workshop in Harare, aimed at promoting a safer stadium culture across Africa.
As reported by <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/govt-hails-fifa-caf-stadium-safety-initiative/">The Herald</a>, the workshop was led by instructors from CAF and FIFA and was attended by 40 football security officers and personnel, who graduated with certificates at the end of the three-day program.
The graduation ceremony was attended by several high-ranking officials, the Acting Secretary for Sports, Arts, Recreation, and Culture, Eugenia Chidhakwa, Sport and Recreation Commission director-general Eltah Nengomasha, ZIFA Normalisation Committee chairman Lincoln Mutasa, Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume and a senior representative from the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
In a statement read on her behalf by Chidhakwa, Minister of Sport, Arts, Recreation, and Culture Kirsty Coventry, who was unable to attend due to other commitments, expressed gratitude to CAF for the initiative. She said:

Zimbabwe Commends FIFA, CAF For Efforts To Enhance Stadium Safety

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Normalisation Committee has appointed Michael Nees as the new head coach of the Zimbabwe Men’s National Team, the Warriors.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, 30 July, ZIFA announced that the 57-year-old German tactician will lead the Warriors in the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Nees becomes the first substantive Warriors coach since Croatian national Zdravko Logarusic was fired a couple of years ago. ZIFA said:

ZIFA Appoints Michael Nees As Warriors Head Coach

Castle Lager Premier Soccer League club Herentals College’s owner Innocent Benza has slammed the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Normalisation Committee (NC) led by Chairman Lincoln Mutasa for his alleged “lack of interest in and basic knowledge about football”.
Benza, who is also the Member of Parliament for Mutasa Central (ZANU PF), said Mutasa “must do the noble thing and resign for the good of the game”.
He made the remarks after Mutasa, NC member Nyasha Sanyamandwe and ZIFA chief executive officer Yvonne Mapika Manwa appeared before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Sports and Recreation on Thursday in Harare.
The trio failed to provide convincing responses to the questions they were asked by the sports committee in line with their line of duty and basic football knowledge.
Mutasa revealed he has yet to attend a local league match one year into office since their appointment by FIFA in July 2023, while Sanyamandwe said she had no prior football experience before her appointment to the NC.
Addressing reporters after the meeting, Benza, who is a member of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Sports and Recreation, said Mutasa “must resign” to “save” Zimbabwean football. Said Benza (via <a href="https://nehandaradio.com/2024/07/26/herentals-owner-benza-blasts-zifa-nc-tells-chairman-mutasa-to-resign/">Nehanda Radio</a>):

We are not forcing him to resign but we are saying through his reasoning, he must just hand in his resignation to save Zimbabwean football.
We are lagging not because we don’t have the facilities or football in Zimbabwe but simply because the person at the front lacks interest and he expressed clearly in front of everyone that he is too busy to come to even watch football, we don’t know what he will be doing there.

Herentals Owner Innocent Benza Says ZIFA NC Chairman Must Resign To "Save Zimbabwean Football"

Mhondoro Mubaira Member of Parliament Chamu Chiwanza (ZANU PF) says the members of the ZIFA Normalisation Committee (NC) are “clueless individuals who don’t know anything about football” and called for their immediate resignation.
The ZIFA NC comprises Lincoln C. Mutasa (chairperson), Rosemary Mugadza (member), and Nyasha Tashinga Sanyamandwe (member). Yvonne Mapika-Manwa is the chief executive officer.
Mutasa, Sanyamandwe, and Mapika-Manwa appeared before the Parliamentary Sports Portfolio Committee on Thursday and were grilled by legislators about the state of football in the country.
Parliamentary Sports Portfolio Committee members include Farai Jere (Murehwa West) and Innocent Benza (Mutasa Central) both ZANU PF and the owners of Premier Soccer League clubs CAPS United and Herental College, respectively.
Chiwanza, Jere and Benza were among the committee members who took turns to ask Mutasa critical questions.
During the session, Mutasa revealed that he had not attended a single PSL match in the last 12 months, claiming instead that he watched the games on television, while Mapika-Manwa was exposed for not being able to name some of the players on the national football team.
Speaking to journalists after the session, Chiwanza said described the former Dynamos chairman and his administration as individuals who exposed a lack of knowledge and the inability to run the game. He has no idea. It’s a catastrophe. The decay and degradation of football has been getting worse since they (ZIFA NC) came into office one year ago.
Zimbabwe is a football-loving nation. The people are crazy about football and our president is doing massive work to see that Zimbabweans are happy and we cannot allow people running football trying to distract it.

ZANU PF MP Demands Resignation Of "Clueless" ZIFA Normalisation Committee

FIFA is not satisfied with the reform process in Zimbabwean football and is now set to assemble a new Normalisation Committee for the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), reported <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/fifa-to-name-new-zifa-committee/">The Herald</a>.
The mandate of the current ZIFA Normalisation Committee chaired by Lincoln Mutasa is set to officially expire on June 30.
The Herald reported that the Normalisation Committee is set to be unveiled on July 2 and will be handed a nine-month tenure to complete the task commenced by Mutasa and his team who were appointed on 11 July 2023.
ZIFA chief executive Yvonne Manwa on Friday night told the publication that they were still to receive official communication from FIFA on the future of the Normalisation Committee. She said:

We have not been informed officially of anything with respect to the Normalisation Committee.
There has been no communication as to whether there will be changes or not.
But what is common knowledge is that yes the term of office of the Normalisation Committee is coming to an end on June 30 and we will stand guided by FIFA on the next steps.

FIFA head of development programmes for Africa, Solomon Mudege and director Member Associations Africa, Gelson Fernandes, are reportedly finalising their list for the new leadership for ZIFA. A source was quoted as saying:

FIFA had been hoping that the outgoing Normalisation Committee would have covered a lot of ground in terms of the tasks they were given when they were appointed last year.
But to the disappointment of FIFA, a lot of the work has not been done and ZIFA is not even ready for elections.
The reforms have gone on at a very slow pace and for FIFA they are looking at having another Normalisation Committee, which they hope will do a better job and address the problems that have been at ZIFA.
The names of those who are being earmarked for the Normalisation Committee are still a closely guarded secret that only those in Switzerland know about.
But there is a determination by FIFA to also make some amends by identifying a stronger team that will do far much better than what Lincoln Mutsa and his team have done.

Harare businessman Nigel Chanakira is reportedly expected to be appointed as the chairperson of a new ZIFA Normalisation Committee.

FIFA Set To Appoint A New ZIFA Normalisation Committee

Disagreements between the ZIFA Normalisation Committee and the FIFA head of development programmes for Africa, Solomon Mudege, resulted in the delay in the appointment of the coach of the national senior men’s football team, the Warriors, and hampered the return of Baltemar Brito, reported <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/story-behind-warriors-coaching-chaos">The Sunday Mail</a>.
Mudenge, working with FIFA Forward manager Kudzi Chitima and ZIFA chief executive officer Yvonne Mapika Manwa, had reportedly given Brito the job verbally.
They asked the Brazilian to select his players for the two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and South Africa on 7 and 11 June, respectively.
However, ZIFA Normalisation Committee chairperson Lincoln Mutasa and his executive allegedly refused to process Brito’s papers after he criticised how they handled the previous 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Nigeria in Butare, Rwanda, in November 2023.
The Sunday Mail reported sources as saying Mudege, Manwa and Chitima struggled to convince Mutasa and his executive to rehire Brito after he criticised ZIFA following the Warriors’ back-to-back draws against Rwanda and Nigeria. Said the source:

There was a lot of optimism from FIFA’s Mudege and Chitima that the reappointment of Brito would sail through, hence he was tasked with selecting the players with the help of Chitima.
But when the matter was brought to the Normalisation Committee, they stood their ground and rejected Brito’s re-engagement as he had already fallen out with the committee after the Rwanda trip.
It was then that an initial decision to hire Joey Antipas was made, but the Chicken Inn coach does not have a CAF A Licence badge and when the Normalisation Committee put Lloyd Chitembwe’s name forward, it was rejected by the FIFA guys.
Chitembwe also has his challenges of being blacklisted from entering South Africa, so, in the end, a compromise was reached to settle for the three coaches who had been identified as Chitembwe’s assistants, who are Jairos, Chiragwi and Chaminuka.
Another long meeting was held by the Normalisation Committee to decide on the coaches to preside over the upcoming matches and during that meeting, the chairman, Mutasa, insisted that Mhofu (Sunday Chidzambwa) should be in the setup as technical adviser because he rates him highly.

On Friday, Mutasa announced the appointment of Jairos Tapera as Warriors interim coach, with Takesure Chiragwi and Saul Chaminuka, as assistant coaches for the two World Cup qualifiers.
Former Warriors Head Coach, Sunday Chidzambga, was appointed the Warriors’ Technical Director.
Tapera became the fourth interim coach to take charge of the Warriors since the appointment of the ZIFA Normalisation Committee on 11 June 2023. The others are Sunday Chidzambwa, Brito and Norman Mapeza.
The Sunday Mail also heard that the ZIFA NC members are a divided lot but they have one thing in common: “They don’t like those who criticise them.” Said the source:

"Baltemar Brito Selected Warriors Squad For World Cup Qualifiers In June 2024"

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Normalisation Committee says it will announce a new Warriors coach in the next two weeks.
The new coach will have only two weeks to prepare for Zimbabwe’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Lesotho in South Africa on June 7.
The Warriors will then take on South Africa in the same qualifiers on June 11.
<a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/zifa-in-ridiculous-warriors-coach-appointment-timeline">The Sunday Mail</a> reported ZIFA chief executive officer Yvonne Mapika-Manwa as saying the process to select the Warriors coach is underway. She said:

The evaluation of the applicants is already underway, with a shortlist of the best-placed applicants set to be drawn up, from which the most suitable candidate for the post will be selected. We expect to complete the entire process in the next two weeks.

According to ZIFA, 139 non-Zimbabwean coaches applied, with only 12 being Zimbabwean.
Former Highlanders coach Baltemar Brito, African Cup of Nations winner Winfred Schaffer and Christopher Gamel of France are some of the foreigners who have applied for the job.
Former Liverpool and Warriors keeper Bruce Grobbelaar, Taurai Mangwiro and Saul Chaminuka are some of the Zimbabwean coaches on the list of applicants.
However, the likes of Sunday Chidzambwa, Joey Antipas, Kalisto Pasuwa, Norman Mapeza, Kaitano Tembo and Rodwell Dhlakama did not apply.
Football analysts have criticised ZIFA for delaying the appointment of the Warriors coach, saying the new coach will not have enough time to evaluate the players to understand the players’ strengths and weaknesses.
Given that foreign-based players have to be invited at least three weeks before a match, the new coach will have to work with players selected by a technical committee that will be headed by ZIFA technical director Jethro Hunidzarira.
The Warriors are in Group C of the 2026 CAF World Cup qualifiers, alongside South Africa, Benin, Rwanda, Nigeria and Lesotho.
Rwanda top the group after two rounds of fixtures with four points, one ahead of South Africa.
Nigeria, Lesotho and Zimbabwe are tied on two points, while Benin are bottom of the table with a single point.

ZIFA Set To Announce Warriors Coach In Two Weeks Time

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Normalisation Committee has reportedly determined that the Warriors will host Lesotho in South Africa during the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Zimbabwe does not have a single stadium certified by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host international matches.
The Warriors hosted Nigeria in Rwanda on match day 2 in November 2023, a few days after playing against Rwanda in the central African country.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has unequivocally disassociated itself from the alleged FIFA induction courses.
ZIFA’s official statement issued on Monday, April 8, clarifies that it is currently not engaged in organizing these courses.
ZIFA warned that impersonating football officials constitutes a criminal offence, and all communication related to FIFA courses will exclusively occur through official ZIFA channels. Reads the statement:

We wish to clarify that the Association is not involved in these courses at present. Furthermore, there are no ongoing courses currently, but the Association will organize them in due time.
