The arrest of a Zimbabwean man in South Africa for allegedly stealing copper cables has generated a heated online debate. Some individuals have called for a ban on all Zimbabweans from travelling or residing in South Africa as a result of this incident. However, others have come to the defence of Zimbabweans, arguing that it is unfair to judge an entire group of people based on the actions of a few individuals.
The debate emanated from a social media post by PSAFLIVE, an independent online news channel. The news outlet posted:

The Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens from the Eastern Infrastructure Unit together with Gauteng Traffic Police have arrested an illegal Zimbabwean male whom they found in possession of suspected stolen City Power Cables at Primrose in Germiston. The suspect has been arrested and detained at Primrose SAPS.
</blockquote>
Some people suggested that all Zimbabweans should be banned from entering South Africa and that those already there should be forced to leave. Said Lungs @Lungs_star:
<blockquote>
At this point we must ban all the Zimbos from entering SA, and banish all those that are already here.
</blockquote>
Others have voiced concerns about Zimbabweans and other foreigners living in South Africa, claiming that their activities and livelihoods are unknown. Others called for a thorough clean-up of South Africa, emphasising the need for politicians to prioritise the country’s interests. Others said Julius Malema, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) should be made aware of these criminal activities. Malema supports a borderless Africa and argues that Zimbabweans too should be allowed in South Africa.
Those defending Zimbabweans have highlighted that every society has both good and bad people, and it is wrong to generalise and stigmatise an entire nationality because of the actions of a few. Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono emphasised the need to separate criminal behaviour from the broader Zimbabwean community. He responded to the post:

Every society has good and bad people. You can’t paint every Zimbabwean as a bad person because of a few bad Zimbabweans that have committed crimes in South Africa. There are Zimbabweans who have run banks, companies like MTN, have invested millions in South Africa and have contributed to South African sports. I own property in South Africa, I have invested there since 2008, I am not a criminal. So I don’t know why I should be only identified through the lenses of bad Zimbabweans and not the good ones. It is the duty of South African police to arrest everyone who commits a crime in South Africa, it is the duty of South African immigration to uphold the laws of your country. When both fail as you insinuate, deal with your government instead of insulting us online. I am not an illegal immigrant when I enter your borders, I enter through your airports because your laws allow me to do so. I have never used a penny of South African public money, instead my investments pay tax which funds your hospitals that I don’t use. So why should I be asked to account for the actions of a few bad Zimbabweans who have committed crimes when I have always been an upright global citizen each time I am in your country?

Chin’ono also highlights that as long as South Africa continues to support rigged elections in Zimbabwe and undermine alternative political players, the immigration issue will persist. He emphasises that defending a corrupt electoral system next door and then complaining about the consequences is hypocritical. The ANC, which is the ruling party in South Africa, has been known to support ZANU PF, the ruling political party in Zimbabwe. ZANU PF is accused of being corrupt and running the country’s economy into the ground. As a result, many Zimbabweans have been forced to leave their country and go abroad in search of better opportunities.

Some South Africans Call For Ban On Zimbabweans After Arrest Of Copper Cable Thief

Zimbabwe’s ambassador to South Africa, David Hamadziripi, has appealed to his compatriots who reside in the neighbouring country to respect its laws.
Speaking in Pretoria on Thursday, Hamadziripi said not all Zimbabweans residing in South Africa are involved in criminal activities. He said:
<blockquote>
Clearly, it is like in any basket, you will get bad apples. There are those focused on them.
We have thousands of Zimbabweans making positive contributions in South Africa.
We don’t hear much about them. We hear (only) about those who tarnish the name of Zimbabwe.
In our country, we want everybody to respect the law. We also expect them to respect the laws of South Africa.

Hamadziripi said Zimbabwe was worried about the ill-treatment of its citizens by South Africans. He said:

Our route is through the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) to raise our concerns.
This is not the right thing to prevent people from accessing public services.
We have raised that with Dirco about such treatment. We wish those practices to stop.
Regarding those who were recently evicted from a building in Johannesburg, we interacted with authorities, including the police.
Our government has provided funding to assist those people who wish to return home.
Where our people need assistance, we have mobilised to help them.

SA: Ambassador Hamadziripi Says Majority Of Zimbabweans Are Law-abiding

Zimbabwe Consul General Melody Chaurura confirmed Monday that the number of Zimbabweans who died from attacks on immigrants last month in Chavani village outside Elim in Limpopo has risen to four.
This is after Zimbabwean national Tops Mutanho succumbed to his injuries on 26 September. <a href="https://www.groundup.org.za/article/a-fourth-zimbabwean-dies-after-attacks-in-elim-last-month/">GroundUp</a> cites Chauriura as saying:
<blockquote>
Mutanho, a male Zimbabwe national from Chivi area village, succumbed to injuries sustained from mob justice after he was said to have been found in possession of stolen copper cables.
</blockquote>
Two of the other victims who were at first said by police to have been burnt beyond recognition have now been identified as Johan Munago and Amon Munago, both from Chivi in Masvingo. 
The third victim is yet to be identified. 
More than 200 people fled into the bush after the attacks on 18 September.
Chaurura said the victims had not yet been repatriated because of pending forensic investigations.
Dockets relating to the cases were opened at Waterval Police Station but no one has been arrested.
Thomas Shonhai, a relative of the Munago brothers, told Groundup that he had been told by the community that they had been found in possession of stolen solar panels and cables. 
The angry community beat them until the two led the community to the person who sold them the solar panels. The accused denied stealing the solar panels. During the mix of things the accused managed to escape, leaving the Munagos in trouble.
Shonhai says he cannot afford to repatriate his relatives.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwean consulate says it has offered repatriation to families affected by the violence but has no budget for repatriation of the dead.

South Africa: 4th Zimbabwean Dies After Attacks On Foreign Nationals

Three Zimbabwean nationals were burnt to death in Chavani Village outside Elim on Saturday, reported <a href="https://www.groundup.org.za/article/three-zimbabweans-burnt-to-death-in-elim/">GroundUp</a>.
The three Zimbabweans had been accused of stealing cables and solar panels.
Following the attack, about 200 immigrants fled their homes into the bush or other villages. Some were forced out of their houses by vigilante groups.
Makhado police spokesperson Sergeant Tshifhiwa Irene Radzilani said the three Zimbabweans “were burnt beyond recognition”. 
Police have opened murder cases but no arrests have been made.
Malume Chinabwa, from the Kagisano (seTswana for living together harmoniously) programme, run by the Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) in Elim and Musina said:

Since Saturday more than 200 foreigners – Zimbabweans, Mozambicans and Malawians – have been calling me for assistance.
During the day, they try to visit townships where they are not known, in search of food but spend the night in bushes.
</blockquote>
Elim resident Francis Thiba told GroundUp that at about 6 PM on Saturday a group of youths, including women, came to his residence.
He said his wife and three children were ordered to leave and they fled to the bush. Police later rescued them the same day.
Thiba was beaten on the head and in the face before he was rescued by Waterval police at about 7 PM who took him to Elim hospital.
He was discharged on Tuesday and joined his family at Waterval police station, where they had sheltered for three days.
Thiba, who has been living in Shirley village, Elim, for over ten years, has been in South Africa since 2000.
He said they are prepared to leave for Zimbabwe, but he has no money for transport.
Meanwhile, police have called on the community not to take the law into their hands.

Three Zimbabweans Burnt  Beyond Recognition In South Africa

An unidentified man, apparently a foreign national has been whipped by South African citizens allegedly for “taking our jobs.”
This comes as xenophobic attacks have resurfaced in South Africa as locals claim that the ballooning employment rate among South Africans was being worsened by foreign nationals who were flocking into that country for jobs.

The assailants are heard shouting “Hini elithathi imisebenzi yethu boSatan, Nguwe othathi imisebenzi yethu, tsamaya, hamba la” [you’re the ones taking our jobs, you disrespect us, go] as one of them whips the man who eventually gets into a car and drives away.

Zimbabwe has expressed concern over recent xenophobic attacks in neighbouring South Africa that are said to have affected Zimbabwean nationals. Zimbabwe’s representatives in South Africa urged Zimbabweans in that country to reach out to their offices to get help. Pindula News presents a statement by the Embassy:

The Embassy of the Republic of Zimbabwe in the Republic of South Africa and its Consulates in Cape Town and Johannesburg have received reports of disturbing events that recently took place and affected Zimbabwe nationals in parts of Johannesburg and Lephalale in the Limpopo Province. In these instances, nationals reportedly received threats of unspecified action, including forced eviction, if they did not leave the country by a certain date. The Embassy and the Consulates are aware of the anxiety brought about by the non-renewal of the Zimbabwe Exemption Permits and their termination on 31 December 2022.
The Embassy and the Consulates urge all Zimbabwe nationals in the Republic of South Africa to be vigilant and to be law-abiding. Holders of the Zimbabwe Exemption Permits who choose to remain in the country after 31 December 2022 must start the process of migrating to other visas early. Relevant information is on the website of the Department of Home Affairs.
The Embassy and the Consulates are in regular contact with the relevant South African government representatives on matters concerning the safety of Zimbabweans in South Africa.

South Africa: Zimbabwe Disturbed By Xenophobic Attacks On Its Citizens

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has expressed concern over the resurgence of xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
This comes after reports that <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/01/18/watch-south-africans-destroy-foreign-vendors-stalls/">Soweto residents destroyed vending stalls</a> owned by foreign nationals at Bara Taxi Rank.
On Sunday, scores of residents, under the banner of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Operation_Dudula">Operation Dudula</a>, descended on the rank to remove illegal immigrants hawking there. 
There have been reports of violence against foreign nationals in areas such as Diepkloof, Rosebank and Turfontein amid fear that it might spread. In response, ZCTU said:
<blockquote>
 We are seriously disturbed by the resurgence of xenophobic attacks in SA. Foreigners are not in SA by choice but because of difficulties in their countries, including misgovernance.
</blockquote>
Some accuse politicians of fuelling these attacks by making reckless comments for political power and influence.
Recently, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema said he will be vising restaurants to enquire if they had not employed foreign nationals at the expense of South African nationals.
Scores of people were killed in previous attacks targeted at foreign nationals, mainly those of African origin who are being accused of taking employment from local nationals.
Some, however, blame the attacks on South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) for failing to provide public goods and services to its citizens forcing the frustrated nationals to channel their anger on foreign nationals.
