MDC-T president Douglas Mwonzora has slammed former party spokesperson Witness Dube and other parliamentarians who recently defected to ZANU PF.
Mwonzora said Dube and the other defectors are “weak-willed” and were bribed by ZANU PF. <a href="https://bulawayo24.com/index-id-news-sc-national-byo-233670.html">He was quoted as saying</a>:

Some top MDC leaders and parliamentarians, who were weak-willed, have been bought by trinkets and joined ZANU PF.
These blinded them such that they see nothing wrong with hobnobbing with a party that has destroyed the livelihoods of millions of Zimbabweans.
The MDC remains the only party that is pro-poor and pro-people, a true vanguard of the people.

Dube, who dumped MDC-T on Saturday, was paraded by ZANU PF at a rally in Centenary later that day.
He claimed that the MDC-T received funds from the State but squandered the money resulting in its failure to field parliamentary candidates in the upcoming general elections.

Mwonzora Says Witness Dube Was "Bought" By ZANU PF

Former MDC-T spokesperson Witness Dube has criticised opposition political parties in Zimbabwe and accused CCC and his former party of abandoning founding values.
Both CCC and MDC-T are offspring of the MDC which was formed in 1999 and led by trade unionists, academics and lawyers among other interest groups.
Speaking in an interview with <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/witness-dube-slams-opposition-demigods/">The Herald</a>, Dube likened CCC and MDC-T to the Biblical Philistine building that Samson demolished by shaking two pillars, suggesting that the two parties will cease to exist without their current leaders. Said Dube:

The opposition has deviated from the founding vision of its founding fathers to be about creating jobs for the people who will then draw political funding for their leadership.
CCC is blatantly a Philistine building that Samson destroyed by shaking two pillars.
Without Chamisa (Nelson) and a few others, there will be no CCC to talk about.
On the other hand, the MDC leadership has collapsed all organs of the party and abandoned the organic relations which the founding fathers had with the people.
More disturbing is the disturbing arrogance of both Nelson Chamisa and Douglas Mwonzora who in hindsight, tore the MDC the day they decided to run for secretary-general back in 2014.
CCC had double candidates at by-elections, and they are still in denial that they are that disorganized as they repeated the same albeit on a bigger scale in these general elections.
MDC misused the grant and failed to pay for its 87 candidates of mostly staff members who stepped on to save the party from the embarrassment of not having candidates.
The agenda is clear and systematically pursued. The opposition only uses the people to create jobs for each other and to access taxpayers’ money through political funding.
They have not added any value to the leadership matrix and development in our country.

He said ZANU PF is the only party with a genuine passion for reforming itself, while “the opposition formations have been degenerating without any hope for ever self-healing as they have no institutional capacity to do so.”
Dube resigned from his post in the MDC-T on Saturday, 22 July, and later that day, was spotted at a ZANU PF rally that was addressed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Centenary, Mashonaland Central Province.

MDC-T Defector, Witness Dube, Castigates Zimbabwean Opposition Parties

Witness Dube, a former senior official of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), has made a statement on social media claiming that the “radar of democracy” is now permanently located within the ruling party, ZANU PF. This statement was made in response to criticism from David Coltart, a former Education Minister during the Government of National Unity (GNU), who had accused Dube of defecting and joining ZANU PF.
Dube had posted a photo on Twitter showing himself at a ZANU PF event while wearing the party regalia, which Coltart criticised as “utterly shameful”. In response, Dube claimed that ZANU PF was now the home of democracy. Dube’s initial tweet reads:

Then Dube responded and said:

The radar of democracy is now permanently resident in @ZANUPF_Official. But I do understand why you have to scream for your Mayoral post, you were never the people’s choice, &amp; now have to divert attention away from that fact. We are coming for the cities &amp; towns. EDpfeeee!

His remarks are significant given his previous position within the MDC as the national spokesperson. It suggests that he no longer believes that the MDC can provide a viable alternative to ZANU PF in terms of promoting <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">democratic ideals</a>. While Dube is not the first to defect to ZANU PF, his departure and statements could have implications for the political landscape in <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Zimbabwe</a>, particularly as the country approaches its next elections.
Since its formation in 1999, the MDC has been committed to removing <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">ZANU PF</a> from power, accusing it of being autocratic and engaging in anti-democratic practices such as <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">election rigging</a>, voter intimidation, and harassment.

The Radar Of Democracy Is Now Permanently Resident In ZANU PF: MDC Defector

The national secretary for Information and Publicity of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), Witness Dube, has resigned and left the party.
In a letter addressed to the party president, Douglas Mwonzora, Dube announced his resignation and termination of his membership, stating that he had found a new political party that he would be joining. Reads the letter:

Dear MDC President and the MDC family at large, please accept this letter as formal notification that I am resigning from my position as the party’s National Secretary for Information and Publicity with immediate effect. I also wish to terminate my membership of the party which I have held since 11 November 1999, also with immediate effect.
I am grateful for having been a member of the party from the lowest to its highest organ which opened my global view of the politics of service and sacrifice. My current portfolio taught me a lot about the Zimbabwean political leadership question, and the opportunities available for working for and supporting development in our country while insulating future generations from repeating our past mistakes and recycling our past pains.
I wish the party and it’s leadership well in their future endeavours. Regrettably there will be nothing more I can do to wrap up my duties as I will be joining a new political home which I am looking forward to instantly serving with the best and all of my abilities

Dube has been a member of the main opposition party since its formation in 1999 and has held various positions within the party. His resignation comes just a day after another opposition party member, Edmore Gomba, withdrew his candidacy for the August 23 harmonised elections and joined the ruling ZANU PF party.

Senior MDC Official Resigns, Leaves The Party Days Before Elections

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Elias_Mudzuri">Elias Mudzuri</a>, a former MDC vice president, and six other party members who were suspended lately over a number of alleged offences have argued that their removal was unlawful, raising more doubts about <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Douglas_Mwonzora">Douglas Mwonzora</a>‘s authority as the party’s leader.
The opposition suspended Mudzuri, Norest Marara, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gift_Konjana">Gift Konjana</a>, John Nyika, Den Moyo, Edwin Dzambara, and Edwin Kakora on Monday for allegedly breaking party rules, having illegal meetings, and undermining the democratic procedures of the organisation.
The seven argued in an internal memo submitted to the party’s national chairperson Solomon Chikohwero that the Mwonzora camp’s suspension of them was unlawful. They also vowed to continue carrying out their party obligations.
They cited sections of the MDC constitution that state that the president and national chairperson are elected in a congress, therefore, since there was no congress, the party’s presidency, national chairperson, and standing committee positions were all vacant. As per 6.4.4.1 of the MDC Constitution, The President and National Chairman of the party together with the rest of the Standing Committee office bearers shall be elected at Congress.
Since no congress has been held according to the tenets of the party constitution, the offices stipulated in 6.4.4.1 are deemed to remain vacant.
Any individual seeking to usurp powers vested in 6.4.4.1 is acting ultra-vires the party constitution and any actions, announcements, or representations from such individuals are null and void.

The seven officials, according to MDC spokesperson Witness Dube, were accused of leaking the information to the media in an effort to get unwarranted attention.
Dube claimed that the suspended officials were merely seeking public sympathy because they even considered writing to Chikohwero, who they claim was improperly using his position as party chair. Dube said:

We will not be drawn to argue on our constitution in the media because this is what these attention seekers will derive satisfaction from.
The fact that they recognise a chairperson they consider to have been elected illegally shows that they are only playing to the gallery, and may be afraid of appearing before the disciplinary hearing.
The party will comment after their case has been properly considered in accordance with our constitutional provisions.

Insiders claim that the seven suspended party leaders were unofficially dismissed for criticising Mwonzora’s leadership, and the opposition used the impending disciplinary process as a public relations gimmick.
According to reports, the suspended leaders are currently developing a plan to contest their expulsion and Mwonzora’s authority.
They attribute the party’s unpopularity and dismal performance in last year’s by-elections to Mwonzora’s strategies.

Mudzuri, 6 Other MDC Officials Say Their Suspension Was Unlawful

The MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora early this month reversed the recall of Victoria Falls Ward 8 Councillor Joseph Dzangai who it had mistakenly taken for a loyalist of CCC president Nelson Chamisa.
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) had to cancel the by-election called to replace Dzangai. ZEC Chief Elections Officer Utloile Silaigwana wrote Friday:

This notice serves to advise the public that the Election Notice published by the Commission on 20 October 2022 on the occurrence of a vacancy in Ward 8 of Victoria Falls Municipality is hereby withdrawn.
This withdrawal follows a letter dated 3 November 2022 by the Town Clerk of Victoria Falls Municipality advising the Commission that the MDC-T had erroneously recalled the incumbent Councillor.

In October, Mwonzora issued recalls on MDC Alliance councillors in Binga, Gweru and Victoria Falls accusing them of being loyal to Chamisa.
MDC-T spokesperson Witness Dube on Friday told <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/2022/11/mwonzora-withdraws-recall-on-councillor-forces-scrapping-of-by-election/">ZimLive</a> that Councillor Dzangai “had been erroneously recalled because processes to determine his membership had not been completed”. He added:

The party has profusely apologised to him. Membership to the party is subject to our party constitution, and if he is expelled from the party because of violating his membership, he has to be recalled.
Put simply, our party constitution Article 5 provides for the expulsion of any member who ‘joins or supports’ another party while holding on to the party membership.
Party organs have to determine whether he has ‘joined’ or is ‘supported’ by another party.

MDC-T Withdraws Recall On Victoria Falls Ward 8 Councillor

The MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora says it is not being driven by malice or jealousy in recalling parliamentarians and councillors who were elected on the MDC Alliance ticket in 2018.
Since 2020, MDC-T has recalled dozens of MPs and scores of councillors who refuse to recognise its president, Mwonzora, or are suspected of hobnobbing with CCC leader Nelson Chamisa.
MDC-T spokesperson, Witness Dube, said the party has the constitutional right to recall members who join other parties.
He challenged the elected representatives who join other parties to honourably resign and join movements of their choice without waiting to be recalled. Said, Dube:

We are not being driven by malice or jealousy. Perhaps the question should be why the recalled persons are not resigning to join the political parties of their choice and not the narrative you are trying to insinuate.
Recalls are constitutionally provisioned to redress duplicitous situations like these. We should be pressured not recalling such since they have no integrity to resign before joining other political parties.
There also is a question of why those people do not resign by themselves before joining other political parties.
The conduct of being in-between parties actually does affect the discharge of their duties and the fulfilment of party manifestos.
There is so much more to explore about the recall clause other than just vilifying the MDC for effecting a constitutional provision meant to protect the voter.
If that clause is removed a strong institution like ZANU PF, because of its reliance on the deep state, will be able to buy the way of their people into opposition bodies.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has since 2018 handled 66 parliamentary and 168 local authority by-elections.
The majority of the vacancies were created by recalls engineered by MDC-T, first under Thokozani Khupe who later joined CCC and now under Mwonzora. Added Dube:

Remember how Jonathan Moyo crossed back to Zanu PF with the Tsholotsho seat before this clause? Without this clause, who knows what Temba Mliswa would have done by now?

Moyo was an independent representative of Tsholotsho before rejoining ZANU PF.

"It's Not Malice Or Jealousy", MDC-T Justifies Recalls

The opposition MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora has disputed remarks made over the weekend by its national chairperson, Morgen Komichi, who said the party will contest upcoming by-elections after boycotting all by-elections held after 26 March 2022.
Komichi told an online publication that the party had fielded representatives in all the vacant wards. He was quoted as saying:

This time around we are going to take part in the upcoming by-elections. We have already identified through consensus our candidates. We are urging Zimbabweans to vote for the MDC-T.
</blockquote>
However, in a statement released on Monday, MDC-T spokesperson Witness Dube refuted Komichi’s comments saying the party’s position on by-elections has not changed. Dube said:

The MDC’s position on by-elections remains that we will not be participating in any by-election until after our current restructuring exercise and congress preparations are completed.
A report by an online newspaper on the 31st of October 2022 suggesting that we will be participating in the upcoming by-elections is not the correct party position but simply statements attributable to our National Chairperson Morgen Komichi.

Following the 26 March by-elections in which the MDC-T failed to win a single seat, the party’s leadership took a decision not to participate in any future by-elections.
Ten (10) local authority by-elections will be held on 3 December 2022. In Binga, the by-elections will be held in Wards 6, 8, 10, 15, 20 and 23 while in Gweru the elections are set for Wards 4, 5 and 18. We Have Not Changed Our Stance On By-elections - Mwonzora's MDC-T

Job Sikhala’s spokesperson Freddy Masarirevu has denied claims that MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora met the jailed Zengeza West MP at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison on Saturday.
This comes after MDC-T spokesperson, Witness Dube claimed that Mwonzora had met with Sikhala.
Mwonzora yesterday visited Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison where 14 other Nyatsime residents charged alongside Sikhala and Sithole are in pre-trial detention.
But Masarirevu told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/thestandard/local-news/article/200002077/chamisa-denied-access-to-sikhala-as-govt-allows-mwonzora-to-visit-chikurubi-prison">The Standard</a> that Mwonzora did not see Sikhala on his visit to Chikurubi. He said:

I don’t want to comment on Mwonzora’s visit. Just like any other person, he is allowed to visit Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison but I was with comrade Sikhala (yesterday) from 9 am to 12 pm and he told me clearly that he was not going to see Mwonzora. He does not want to see him. If they say he (Mwonzora) saw him, they are lying.

Addressing journalists outside Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison, Mwonzora demanded the unconditional release of Sikhala, Sithole and the 14 other CCC activists.
Sikhala, Chitungwiza North MP, Godfrey Sithole, and the other CCC activists from Nyatsime were arrested on 14 June 2022 after attending the funeral of political activist Moreblessing Ali.
Ali was brutally murdered and her remains were dumped in a disused well and were only discovered three weeks after she had gone missing.
The Leader of Government Business in Parliament, Ziyambi Ziyambi, who is also Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/ziyambi-says-sikhala-has-been-denied-bail-because-he-violated-previous-bail-conditions/">recently told Senators that Sikhala has been denied bail by the courts because he allegedly violated past bail conditions in the past.</a>
Sikhala is said to have been arrested 67 times but has no single conviction.

"Jailed Job Sikhala Refused To Meet Mwonzora"

MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora on Saturday, 15 October 2022, visited MDC Alliance MP, Job Sikhala, and over a dozen CCC activists who have been in pre-trial detention for over 100 days.
Sikhala is being held at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison on allegations of inciting violence.
Sikhala, Chitungwiza North MP, Godfrey Sithole, and the other CCC activists from Nyatsime were arrested on 14 June 2022 after attending the funeral of political activist Moreblessing Ali.
Ali was brutally murdered and her remains were dumped in a disused well and were only discovered three weeks after she had gone missing.
In a statement, MDC-T spokesperson Witness Dube said the continued incarceration of Sikhala and the Nyatsime CCC activists infringes on their right to freedom. Said, Dube:

As concerned Zimbabweans, we believe that Honorable Sikhala and the Nyatsime 16 are entitled to evenhandedness and their continued incarceration infringes on the fundamental rights to justice, which in the circumstances has been delayed.
We are concerned for Honorable Sikhala and the Nyatsime 16 as we would for any other Zimbabwean.
