The Zimbabwe senior men’s national football team is set to receive a US$1 million boost from the government for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals, which will be held in Morocco.
Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube announced the allocation during his presentation of the 2025 National Budget on Thursday. He said:

Government has… made a provision of US$1 million for the preparations and participation of the Zimbabwe National Football Team (Warriors) for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) set for December 2025 in Morocco.

Zimbabwe will be making their sixth appearance at AFCON in Morocco, marking a milestone 20 years since their debut at the 2004 edition in Tunisia.
In related developments, the government has allocated ZiG189 million for the ongoing renovations of the National Sports Stadium.
However, the completion target has been extended to 2025, after missing the initial deadline set for the end of this year. Said Ncube:

Sports, arts and culture sectors contribute significantly to employment creation, as well as help mitigate drug and 
substance abuse, while also serving as catalysts for economic growth.
To support these sectors, ZiG888.4 million has been allocated to the Ministry of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture.
This allocation is meant to facilitate country-wide identification and development of talent in sport, arts and culture among the youth, as well as the rehabilitation of national sports stadia, multi-purpose sports facilities and other recreation facilities across all provinces.
Specifically, ZiG189 million is meant to complete the renovations of the National Sports Stadium to make it usable during the year 2025.

Renovations of the National Sports Stadium began in 2023 but have faced delays due to insufficient funding from the Treasury, as revealed by Minister of Sport, Kirsty Coventry, earlier this year.
At present, Zimbabwe lacks any stadiums certified by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host international football matches.
Historically, the National Sports Stadium and Rufaro Stadium in Harare, as well as Barbourfields in Bulawayo were used for international fixtures, but all have been condemned by CAF for failing to meet the required standards.
As a result, Zimbabwe has had to rely on alternative venues in neighbouring countries, such as South Africa and Botswana, to host international games.

Wicknell Chivayo and Pedza “Scott” Sakupwanya have jointly donated US$250,000 to the Zimbabwe national football team, the Warriors, in recognition of their qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.
Chivayo is a highly controversial figure known for his lucrative business dealings—largely through state tenders and contracts.
Sakupwanya, also a polarising figure, is a prominent gold dealer, owner of the Scottland Football Club, and a Member of Parliament.
His political career has been marked by controversy, including winning a seat unopposed after the CCC candidate was disqualified by the courts just hours before a by-election.
In a post on his social media pages this Tuesday, Chivayo announced that the donation would be officially handed over to the Warriors next week, once he returns from France. He wrote:

Warriors midfielder Andy Rinomhota has said the team is focused on securing qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, set to be held in Morocco, when they face Kenya’s Harambee Stars this Friday.
The Cardiff City midfielder acknowledged that Zimbabwe has struggled in past encounters against Kenya, therefore, they will not underestimate their opponents.

Zimbabwe faces the Harambee Stars this Friday at the new Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa, in a crucial Group J match.
A draw will be enough for the Warriors to secure their spot in next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
If the Warriors draw, Kenya, who currently have four points, will drop two points and no longer be able to surpass Zimbabwe’s tally.
The Warriors still have a chance to top Group J if they win today and also defeat Cameroon in their final qualifier. With 14 points, they would finish ahead of Cameroon, who would remain on 11 points.

Rumours had also circulated that Zimbabwean FIFA official Solomon Mudege, who is accused of secretly influencing ZIFA’s decision-making, had suggested Nees’ appointment.

These crucial matches are scheduled for September 6 and September 10, respectively. Interestingly, both games will be played at the Mandela National Stadium in Uganda, with Kenya hosting Zimbabwe on the 6, and Zimbabwe then welcoming Cameroon four days later.
The decision to play the home matches at a neutral venue is because neither Zimbabwe nor Kenya currently have CAF-certified stadiums capable of hosting international fixtures.

Nees said he will not select players who are not currently affiliated with a club, arguing that match fitness and regular team training are essential requirements for players to be considered.
ZIFA revealed that its technical committee was still finalising the candidates to assist Nees.
Reports suggest a technical committee chaired by former Highlanders chief executive Nhlanhla Dube had shortlisted four names, from which Nees can select his assistants in the coming days.
Nees, who agreed to work with local personnel as part of his contract, was clear on the desired calibre of assistants he wanted to have. He said:

Tapera Applauds Warriors' Strong Start At COSAFA

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Normalisation Committee has made several changes to the Warriors squad for the 2024 COSAFA Cup.
This is the third iteration of the Zimbabwe Warriors squad for the upcoming 2024 COSAFA Cup.
The initial squad was announced on June 2, a revised squad was named just before midnight on June 21, and the latest changes were revealed on June 23.
South Africa will host the tournament in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) from 26 June to 7 July.
Zimbabwe, Zambia, Comoros, and guest nation Kenya are in Group B.
Ngezi Platinum Stars duo Nelson Chadya and Laslie Kashitigu, Highlanders striker Lynoth Chikuhwa and Manica Diamonds trio of Thubelihle Jubani, Geoffrey Chitsumba and Farai Banda, and Bikita Minerals’ Denis Nhongo are among the players dropped from the squad announced on Friday last week.

Warriors Squad Undergo Third Revision Ahead Of 2024 COSAFA Cup

The Zimbabwe Senior Men’s Football National team, the Warriors, dropped seven places to number 129 on the latest FIFA Rankings released on Thursday, 20 June.
The Warriors’ latest ranking came close to matching their worst global ranking of 131, which they experienced in 2016.
The Warriors were in action in the recent international window and lost their two matches in the 2026 CAF World Cup Qualifiers Group C. Zimbabwe lost 0-2 to Lesotho, before losing 3-1 to South Africa.
In Africa, the Warriors dropped five places to number 38 with 1122.54 points.
2022 World Cup winners Argentina remained the top-ranked side in the world and Morocco is topping the African ranking.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/warriors-tumble-disastrous/">The Herald</a>, top Warriors fan Chris Romario Musekiwa said the team’s lowly rankings were a reflection of poor leadership and lack of planning. He said:

The Warriors slumping to 129th in the world is disastrous and shows our standards in terms of international football continue to fall.
</blockquote>
The Warriors have had five different coaches in under 12 months under the current FIFA-appointed ZIFANormalisation Committee chaired by Lincoln Mutasa.
The coaches have been appointed on an interim basis, and the squad for the 2024 COSAFA tournament that kicks off next Wednesday in Gqeberha, South Africa, is yet to be announced. Said Musekiwa:

We might have quality players playing in some of the top leagues and some talented young players but if we do not plan accordingly for international assignments we plan to fail and the results will always be catastrophic.
Just recently a caretaker coach was appointed, a week before key World Cup matches in South Africa The coach didn’t have time to play any friendly and assess all his players.
Football does not lie, we performed dismally. Lesotho (ranked 149th) outplayed us because they have been together as a team for more than a month.
We are imploring the ZIFA Normalisation Committee to appoint a substantive coach to take charge of the Warriors with immediate effect.
We still have six more World Cup qualifying matches to play and if we can put our house in order we can expect better results in future international matches.
The AFCON qualifiers will be starting soon. ZIFA should take the national team seriously and ensure the team is adequately prepared ahead of any international assignments.

Also speaking to The Herald, Zimbabwe National Soccer Supporters Association (ZNSSA) secretary-general Joseph Mutawu said poor funding of the national team and corruption have resulted in the Warriors’ slump. He said:

It’s a cause for concern. It means our football standards in the country are going down. The Warriors will not be able to attract friendly matches from big and competitive games.
This will also affect our players in terms of selling them to other competitive leagues in the world.
I would attribute this slump to poor preparations and poor funding of our national team, selfish and corrupt football Administrators of our game.
But the major cause of all this was the Asiagate. Many people would want to conveniently sweep it under the carpet but it was the start of all our problems.
That is when the Warriors are beaten by unknown teams.

Warriors Fall Seven Places On Latest FIFA World Rankings

Zimbabwe is yet to taste victory in the ongoing CAF 2026 World Cup qualifiers after losing 3-1 to South Africa on Matchday Four at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday evening.
The Warriors were beaten 0-2 by Lesotho on Friday, and drew their other two matches against Rwanda and Nigeria, respectively, in November 2023.
Yesterday, Bafana Bafana made the perfect start when Iqraam Rayners pounced on a defensive blunder by Munashe Garan’anga and scored in the opening minute.
However, South Africa’s lead lasted only 60 seconds as Tawanda Chirewa pulled one back almost immediately, to give the Warriors hope of a win.
Later in the first half, Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams had to be alert to prevent 20-year-old Chirewa from hitting the back of the net.
South Africa thought they had scored a second goal through Rayners, but Elias Mokwana, playing down the right wing, was judged to have been offside.
Hugo Broos’ men went ahead early in the second half when Oswin Appolis crossed for substitute Thapelo Morena, who was left with a simple tap-in to make it 2-1 to the hosts after the Warriors goalkeeper failed to hold onto the ball.
With Zimbabwe looking for the equaliser, space opened up in the centre of the pitch and Teboho Mokoena put substitute Morena through on goal.
Morena rounded Warriors goalkeeper Geoffrey Chitsumba to make it 3-1 to give South Africa some breathing space.
In the end, Bafana Bafana were able to hold on for the 3-1 win to boost their standing in Group C of World Cup qualifying.
Meanwhile, Rwanda are now the leaders of Group C, which includes South Africa, Benin, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Nigeria.
Three teams are now tied with seven points in the group as South Africa and Benin picked up crucial wins on matchday four.
Despite having an impressive start in the CAF 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Lesotho were beaten 1-0 by Rwanda on Tuesday.
The World Cup qualifiers resume in March 2025, with the Warriors set to host Benin on the 17th, before taking on Nigeria on the 24th.

Tawanda Chirewa Shines But Warriors Lose 3-1 To Bafana Bafana

Former Warriors and Highlanders striker Zenzo Moyo said Zimbabweans should accept that the country’s senior football team has been reduced to minnows in international football, therefore, losing to countries such as Lesotho should not be surprising.
Zimbabwe lost 0-2 to Lesotho on Friday and has another tough assignment against Bafana Bafana this Tuesday in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Speaking to the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/we-are-now-minnows-zenzo-moyo/">Chronicle</a>, Moyo said Zimbabwe has to go back to the drawing board, identify why standards have gone down low, and take corrective action. He said:

I don’t understand people who say we are losing to minnows when we have become the minnows ourselves.
Football being football, we can get a result from Bafana Bafana this evening but that does not take away the fact that we need to regroup, restrategise come up with a clear five to 10-year plan of what we really want to achieve.
At the moment we don’t have a clear plan as we just react to the situation that is on the ground. It should not be a surprise that we are losing to teams like Lesotho because while they were developing we have been degrading.
We used to beat teams like Lesotho, Botswana and even South Africa on impressive scorelines but now we are struggling against the same teams.
We are not at the level which we used to be at and the sooner we accept that the better. We have to look at where we have done wrong and rectify that. It will be a process but that is what our football needs right now.

South Africa’s men’s national football team coach, Hugo Broos, aims to secure three points in the Group C 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe in Bloemfontein, Free State, on Tuesday, June 11.
On Friday, Bafana played to a 1-1 draw against the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Uyo, while Zimbabwe suffered a 0-2 loss to Lesotho in Soweto.
Broos anticipates a challenging match against Zimbabwe, recognising that the Warriors also seek maximum points to remain in the race for a World Cup finals berth. He said:

We are playing on Tuesday against Zimbabwe; we need the three points. I will not be happy if we don’t win against Zimbabwe.
But it is easy to say it here behind the microphones, but I know already on Tuesday it will be a tough game [once] again.

This is something that was the biggest change at AFCON where smaller [football] countries progressed.

We need to work on our defence and we need to work on the set pieces. Against Lesotho, we had so many free kicks and so many corner kicks, but we just couldn’t put the ball into the back of the net.
We need to work on the movement of strikers and wingers so that we have more crosses into the box. We had so many chances in this match, but we couldn’t convert. It’s worrisome that we concede, but we don’t score. We have to sit down and analyse.
We have to be man enough to admit that we have failed ourselves in this match, but we have to see how we can move on and prepare better for the next assignment.
This is football, the way we lost today is the way we can win against any other team tomorrow.

The Warriors have drawn twice and lost once in their three games so far; fortunately, Group C remains wide open.
Lesotho are top of the table with five points while Rwanda, South Africa and Benin have four points each.

Bafana Bafana Coach, Hugo Broos, Targets 3 Points From Warriors Match

Interim Warriors coach Jairos Tapera plans to shuffle the team that started in the 2026 World Cup 0-2 defeat to Group C leaders Lesotho at Orlando Stadium on Friday.
The squad left Johannesburg for Bloemfontein in the Free State early Sunday morning for the match against Bafana Bafana on Tuesday.
Tapera has indicated that he will “tinker with the team a bit” following poor displays by some players in the loss to Lesotho. He said (via the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/tapera-to-ring-changes-warriors-bafana-bafana-face-off/">Chronicle</a>):

We were disappointed with the result against Lesotho. We played good football but we often switched off when it mattered and we were duly punished.

South Africa picked up a point against Nigeria on Friday in Uyo and they will go into the game against the Warriors as the favourites.
However, the Warriors have a slight physical advantage given that Bafana Bafana travelled more than 9,000 km to and from Nigeria while the Zimbabwe squad was in South Africa during that period.
Zimbabwe anchors the table with two points while Lesotho, who are on five points lead the standings going into the matchday four fixtures.

Tapera Set To Shuffle Warriors' Starting Lineup For Bafana Bafana Match

Warriors coach Jairos Tapera expressed disappointment over the team’s 0-2 defeat against Lesotho on Friday. Despite the loss, he commended the players’ performance in the second half.
Tapera attributed the loss to defensive mistakes that led to two soft goals during the half of the match.
He said that while Lesotho deserved respect, the Zimbabwean team should have secured a victory based on the quality of their players, many of whom compete in European leagues. Said Tapera:

I am very disappointed with the result. We conceded two soft goals due to defensive blunders in the first half.
It was a bad first half, but my boys played well in the second half and I am very happy with that performance.
It’s a game of football, but we needed to respond and win the match.
I am not disrespecting Lesotho, but we ought to beat them given what we have in terms of personnel as compared to them.

Tapera Praises Warriors' Second-Half Performance In 0-2 Loss To Lesotho

France-based Warriors captain Marshall Munetsi says the Confederation of African Football (CAF) should introduce video assistant referees (VAR).
Munetsi made the call during a post-match press conference following the Warriors’ 0-2 home loss against Lesotho at Orlando Stadium, Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa, on Friday.
A Video Assistant Referee is a match official in association football who assists the referee by reviewing decisions using video footage and providing advice based on those reviews. The VAR team monitors the game remotely using multiple screens. 
Munetsi believes the absence of VAR contributed to the Warriors’ loss to the Crocodiles. He said:

We need VAR, especially in African football, because even to talk to the referee is a difficult thing. You try to ask him anything, and the next thing he gives you a yellow card.
For us it’s difficult, we always cry about the situation, but it is also unfortunate because it was not on our side.
Situations like those happen in football and sometimes I think the referee has also to come and allow us to ask.

The Warriors had their first penalty appeal turned down in the first half following an apparent handball.
In the second half, substitute Tymon Machope also had a penalty appeal rejected by the referee after he appeared to have been brought down inside the box.
Zimbabwe’s next 2026 World Cup qualifier is against South Africa on Tuesday at Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.

Marshall Munetsi Calls On CAF To Introduce Video Assistant Referees (VAR)

Zimbabwe’s hope of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals suffered a blow on Friday afternoon following a 2-0 defeat by Lesotho.
The Warriors paid the price for a poor first-half defensive display in the Group C matchday three encounter played at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Zimbabwe were favourites going into the match, after fielding a relatively strong first XI that included Wolves youngster Tawanda Chirewa, who made his international debut in the match, as well as Marshall Munetsi, Tino Kadewere, Jordan Zemura, Teenage Hadebe, Divine Lunga and Andy Rinomhota.
The Crocodiles took the lead after 21 minutes when left-back Rethabile Rasethuntsa helped the ball over the line when Zimbabwe’s defence failed to deal with a corner.
Lesotho doubled their lead just nine minutes later as Jane Thaba-Ntso slid in the second, following another Warriors error.
Chirewa and Munetsi were both denied by the woodwork as the Warriors’ efforts came to nothing.
Zimbabwe remain on two points after draws against Rwanda and Nigeria in their first two matches.
Benin beat Rwanda 1-0 at home on Thursday to climb to third in Group C.
Nigeria was scheduled to host South Africa on Friday at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. The match kicks off at 9 PM CAT.

Zimbabwe Lose To Lesotho In World Cup Qualifier

Interim Warriors coach Jairos Tapera says he is happy with his squad’s attitude and enthusiasm to represent the country in the two upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and South Africa.
Tapera met the players for the first time since his appointment, in South Africa on Monday morning before conducting their first training sessions. He said (via <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/warriors-mentality-excites-tapera/">The Herald</a>):

I am happy to be with this amazing group of players who are showing a lot of zeal and enthusiasm in representing their country.
As the technical team, we got to meet the players in the morning before we started training. I should say, I am thrilled with the attitude on display.
They are showing that they want to defend the badge and that is a very good sign if you ask me.
The morning session was basically about assessing the players’ fitness levels. I am not too satisfied and that’s an area we need to work on.
I think the reason for that is because the season is over for most of them especially those coming from Europe. They are not very far off though.

Tapera said they are preparing for the match against Lesotho on Friday and will not be underestimating their opponents. He said:

We will focus more on loading and tactics. I think the physical fitness aspect will also be addressed in the process.
We have quality players in this team and we will try to work on combinations in the next few days.
I am impressed with what I am seeing. I am seeing players who are very passionate about their work and players who are showing a lot of hunger to succeed.
So obviously the combinations will not be very difficult to build. I am seeing some really good chemistry and I am happy.
We are working towards the match against Lesotho coming on Friday.
We know what they are capable of doing and we need not lower our guard. We are keen to bag the full points.

Warriors co-captain Teenage Hadebe did not take part in yesterday’s sessions after he flew out to sign a contract with a new club after he left Turkish side Konyaspor following the end of the Super Lig season.
Tapera said Hadebe will be back in South Africa this Tuesday.

Interim Warriors caretaker coach Jairos Tapera has named his squad for the 2024 COSAFA Cup tournament in Durban, South Africa in July.

Tapera Names Warriors Squad For COSAFA Cup Tournament

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has announced the gate charges for the forthcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier match against Lesotho.
The match is slated for 7 June at the Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.
According to a post on ZIFA’s social media pages, the Rest of the Ground ticket costs R50 for adults and R30 for kids under the age of 12 years.
ZIFA also said tickets will be available online via a link shared on the same post.
Zimbabwe is hosting Lesotho in South Africa because all local stadiums were deemed unfit to host international matches by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
After hosting Lesotho, the Warriors will remain in South Africa to play Bafana Bafana at Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on 11 June.
Zimbabwe also played its first 2026 FIFA World Cup home qualifier against Nigeria in Rwanda in November 2023 a few days after playing the central African nation.
The Sport, Arts, Recreation and Culture Deputy Minister Emily Jesaya on Wednesday said that renovations at the National Sports Stadium will not be completed this year as there is still a lot of work that needs to be done at the facility.
Some of the CAF requirements include installation of bucket seats, electronic turnstiles, a Venue Operations Centre (VOC) and renovation of the B-Arena.

ZIFA Announces Gate Charges For Warriors World Cup Qualifier Against Lesotho

Interim Warriors coach Jairos Tapera says he attempted to persuade former captain Knowledge Musona and China-based Nyasha Mushekwi to end their international retirement and participate in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, but his efforts were unsuccessful.
Tapera, who is being assisted by Takesure Chiragwi and Saul Chaminuka, on Wednesday, announced a 23-man squad for the matches against Lesotho and South Africa in June.
There are only seven locally based players in the squad, namely Chicken Inn, Manica Diamonds and Dynamos goalkeepers Donovan Bernard, Godfrey Chitsumba and Martin Mapisa respectively, as well as Highlanders defender, Andrew Mbeba, CAPS United defender Godknows Murwira and Simba Bhora duo of Walter Musona and Tymon Machope.
The squad include the likes of Tawanda Chirewa, Jordan Zemura, Andy Rinomhota, Daniel Msendami, Shane Maroodza, Munashe Garananga, Tivonge Rushesha, Joey Phuthi, Walter Musona and Tawanda Maswanhise.
Tapera told the <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/tapera-reveals-musona-mushekwi-wish/">Zimpapers Sports Hub</a> that he had tried without success to rope in Musona, Mushekwi and England-based striker Macauley Bonne. He said:

We tried the best that we could to make sure that all departments were balanced. There are some players that we had wanted to be part of the squad, but we couldn’t get them.
Mind you, these are very important games that we are facing, so you would need all your best players available. We reached out to Nyasha Mushekwi but the response was slow.
We also talked to Knowledge Musona and he is unavailable as well. Besides, he is nursing an injury which made him miss the last three games for his team.
Then there is Macauley Bonne, he asked to be excused. He indicated that he was currently changing clubs, so he asked to be excused so that he could facilitate a smooth transfer.
It’s important that we have the core of the squad. There were a few adjustments to the team that has been representing Zimbabwe of late.
We respect what (Baltemar) Brito did in Rwanda (during the opening matches of the qualifiers against Rwanda and Nigeria) and we also respect what Norman Mapeza did in Malawi.
So, we just looked at the core of the teams they deployed, and we worked with that, obviously with a few alterations.

The Warriors squad will report for camp on Sunday in Johannesburg, where they will host Lesotho at the rented Orlando Stadium on June 7.
Zimbabwe will then play hosts South Africa on June 11 at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.

We Wanted Musona And Mushekwi For World Cup Qualifiers - Jairos Tapera

The Zimbabwe National Soccer Supporters Association (ZNSSA) plans to send at least 200 fans to South Africa to support the Warriors in their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The Warriors will host Lesotho at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg on June 7 before taking on Bafana Bafana at Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on June 11.
Although there are millions of Zimbabweans living in South Africa, the ZNSSA believes local fans should be able to watch the Warriors in action.
Zimbabwe was forced to host its match against Lesotho in South Africa because all local stadiums were condemned by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Speaking to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/us48-000-bill-for-warriors-supporters/">The Herald</a>, Joseph Mutawu, ZNSSA secretary general, said they have already started mobilizing funds for the trip to South Africa, with blessings from ZIFA. Said Mutawu:

We are appealing for funds to transport at least 200 national team supporters to South Africa for the senior men’s national team games against Lesotho and South Africa on the 7th and 11th of June, 2024.
We have come up with a budget of US$48 000 to cover the costs of the two matches. We will need US$30 000 for transport and US$18 000 for food and accommodation.

ZIFA chief executive officer, Yvonne Mapika Manwa has commended the ZNSSA for coming up with the initiative. She said:

Zimbabwe is in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers alongside Rwanda, Nigeria, South Africa, Lesotho, and Benin.
The Warriors secured two points through two draws against Rwanda and Nigeria while under the guidance of the Brazilian-born Portuguese mentor, Baltemar Brito.
Jairos Tapera, the coach of Manica Diamonds, will lead the Warriors in the upcoming fixtures. He will be assisted by Saul Chaminuka, the coach of Green Fuel, and Takesure Chiragwi, the gaffer of Ngezi Platinum Stars.
Sunday Chidzambwa, who led Zimbabwe to its first-ever AFCON finals in Tunisia in 2004, serves as the team’s technical advisor.

Warriors’ Fans Seek US$48 000 For World Cup Qualifiers In South Africa

Warriors’ caretaker coach Jairos Tapera is on Wednesday expected to finalise the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and South Africa next month.
<a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/tapera-to-name-warriors-squad/">The Herald</a> reported that the original squad was selected by former Warriors coach Baltemar Brito and ZIFA’s FIFA Forward manager Kudzi Chitima as ZIFA was racing against time to send requests for release letters to foreign clubs.
FIFA rules and regulations state that football associations wishing to call up a player must notify the player in writing at least 14 days before the first day of the international window. 
Tapera and his assistants, Saul Chaminuka and Takesure Chiragwi, as well as technical advisor Sunday Chidzambwa, were appointed on Friday last week but were only formally handed their appointment letters on Monday afternoon during a meeting with ZIFA.
Tapera on Tuesday told The Herald that he will include most of the players who worked with his predecessors, the Brazilian-born Portuguese Brito and Norman Mapeza. He said:

I think we will be able to announce the names of the squad that will do national duty in South Africa tomorrow (today) by the end of the day.
If all goes according to plan, we should be able to finish the task by then.
From what is on the ground, we will have to make do with the core of the squad that has been doing national duty in recent assignments.
Surely, there is no time to experiment or try too many new faces.
We just have to build on what has been there. After all, the squad has been in the hands of Baltemar Britto and Norman Mapeza.
These are experienced and good coaches that we believe have set a base we can carry on from.
Where we feel there is a need to make changes, we will duly do so but like I said the basis of the squad has to be from those that have been there.

Tapera, who is the Manica Diamonds coach, is also expected to name the squad for the COSAFA Cup that will follow soon after the World Cup qualifiers.
The Warriors will host Lesotho at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg on June 7, and then play against South Africa at Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on June 11.

Jairos Tapera To Finalise Warriors Squad

Disagreements between the ZIFA Normalisation Committee and the FIFA head of development programmes for Africa, Solomon Mudege, resulted in the delay in the appointment of the coach of the national senior men’s football team, the Warriors, and hampered the return of Baltemar Brito, reported <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/story-behind-warriors-coaching-chaos">The Sunday Mail</a>.
Mudenge, working with FIFA Forward manager Kudzi Chitima and ZIFA chief executive officer Yvonne Mapika Manwa, had reportedly given Brito the job verbally.
They asked the Brazilian to select his players for the two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and South Africa on 7 and 11 June, respectively.
However, ZIFA Normalisation Committee chairperson Lincoln Mutasa and his executive allegedly refused to process Brito’s papers after he criticised how they handled the previous 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Nigeria in Butare, Rwanda, in November 2023.
The Sunday Mail reported sources as saying Mudege, Manwa and Chitima struggled to convince Mutasa and his executive to rehire Brito after he criticised ZIFA following the Warriors’ back-to-back draws against Rwanda and Nigeria. Said the source:

There was a lot of optimism from FIFA’s Mudege and Chitima that the reappointment of Brito would sail through, hence he was tasked with selecting the players with the help of Chitima.
But when the matter was brought to the Normalisation Committee, they stood their ground and rejected Brito’s re-engagement as he had already fallen out with the committee after the Rwanda trip.
It was then that an initial decision to hire Joey Antipas was made, but the Chicken Inn coach does not have a CAF A Licence badge and when the Normalisation Committee put Lloyd Chitembwe’s name forward, it was rejected by the FIFA guys.
Chitembwe also has his challenges of being blacklisted from entering South Africa, so, in the end, a compromise was reached to settle for the three coaches who had been identified as Chitembwe’s assistants, who are Jairos, Chiragwi and Chaminuka.
Another long meeting was held by the Normalisation Committee to decide on the coaches to preside over the upcoming matches and during that meeting, the chairman, Mutasa, insisted that Mhofu (Sunday Chidzambwa) should be in the setup as technical adviser because he rates him highly.

On Friday, Mutasa announced the appointment of Jairos Tapera as Warriors interim coach, with Takesure Chiragwi and Saul Chaminuka, as assistant coaches for the two World Cup qualifiers.
Former Warriors Head Coach, Sunday Chidzambga, was appointed the Warriors’ Technical Director.
Tapera became the fourth interim coach to take charge of the Warriors since the appointment of the ZIFA Normalisation Committee on 11 June 2023. The others are Sunday Chidzambwa, Brito and Norman Mapeza.
The Sunday Mail also heard that the ZIFA NC members are a divided lot but they have one thing in common: “They don’t like those who criticise them.” Said the source:

Brito was dropped as a possible choice for the coaching for reasons aligned with criticism of the establishment as well.
But I can tell you that Brito was the favourite for the job and he was even seconded to pick the squad he wanted to work with. So, he, together with Kudzi Chitima, was responsible for selecting and inviting the players.
This interim technical team to lead the squad will have no say on which players to use since they have already been selected, especially for the World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and South Africa.
Maybe they will have a say, but not much, for the players they will use in the COSAFA tournament, which they will also take charge of.
