President Donald Trump has unveiled a sweeping series of tariffs targeting countries worldwide, including several of America’s closest trading allies.
In a speech delivered from the White House Rose Garden on Wednesday, 02 April, Trump outlined his plan to impose some of the most severe import taxes to date, ranging from 10% to over 49%, marking what he referred to as “Liberation Day.” He said:

Trump reserved some of his harshest measures for what he referred to as the “nations that treat us badly,” slapping a 34% tariff on goods from China, 26% on India, 24% on Japan, and 20% on the European Union, a key ally.
He claimed he was being “very kind,” explaining that he was only imposing half the tariffs those countries levy on U.S. exports.
For other nations, Trump announced a “baseline” tariff of 10%, including on goods from Britain.
Zimbabwean goods would face an 18% import tax, while Zambia would be hit with a 17% tariff. Several African countries, including Rwanda, Somalia, Mali, and Eswatini, will face a 10% tariff.

In a post on X, Rubio accused Rasool of being a “race-baiting politician” who harbours animosity towards U.S. President Donald Trump. Wrote Rubio:

Rubio referenced his post on X to an article from the conservative U.S. media outlet Breitbart, which covered remarks made by Ebrahim Rasool during a webinar hosted by a South African think tank on Friday.
The term persona non grata, a Latin phrase meaning “unwelcome person,” is commonly used in diplomatic circles to describe someone who is no longer accepted or welcome in a specific country. When a diplomat is declared persona non grata, it typically leads to their expulsion or withdrawal.
In a statement released Saturday morning, the office of South Africa’s President expressed regret over the U.S. decision to expel Rasool, urging both nations to maintain “diplomatic decorum” in their relations. The statement reads:

The Presidency urges all relevant and impacted stakeholders to maintain the established diplomatic decorum in their engagement with the matter.

Rasool has reportedly struggled to secure routine meetings with State Department officials and key Republican figures since Trump, a Republican, took office in January.
It is believed that Rasool’s pro-Palestinian stance and criticism of Israel may have contributed to his exclusion from these discussions.
The expulsion of South Africa’s ambassador—a rare move by the United States—marks the latest escalation in the growing tensions between Washington and Pretoria.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said he supports the United States government’s decision to deport over 500 undocumented Zimbabweans residing illegally in the country.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, Mnangagwa said:

The Government of Zimbabwe supports the United States Government’s decision to repatriate and return our Zimbabwean citizens who may have been residing in the US illegally.

It is estimated that approximately 545 Zimbabweans are currently living in the United States illegally.
This figure is part of a larger group of undocumented immigrants who have been ordered to leave the country.

President Mnangagwa said he supports the United States sending back more than 500 Zimbabweans living there illegally. He thinks it's okay for them to be deported. Around 545 Zimbabweans are in the United States without permission. This is just a small part of all the undocumented immigrants who have been told to go back to their home country.

Mnangagwa Supports The Deportation Of Undocumented Zimbabweans From United States

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has issued a new waiver allowing humanitarian assistance programs to resume, despite a freeze on foreign aid.
The waiver enables the continuation of existing programs that provide essential medicines, medical services, food, shelter, and other vital assistance. Said Rubio:

For the purposes of carrying out the President’s Executive Order on Reevaluating and Realigning United States Foreign Aid, I am approving an additional waiver of the pause under the Executive Order on Reevaluating and Realigning United States Foreign Aid and my subsequent direction of January 24, 2025, for life-saving humanitarian assistance during the period of the review.
Implementers of existing life-saving humanitarian assistance programs should continue or resume work if they have stopped, subject to the following directions. This resumption is temporary in nature, and except by separate waiver or as required to carry out this waiver, no new contracts shall be entered into.
1.  (a) For purposes of this waiver, life-saving humanitarian assistance applies to core life-saving medicine, medical services, food, shelter, and subsistence assistance, as well as supplies and reasonable administrative costs as necessary to deliver such assistance.
(b) This waiver does not apply to activities that involve abortions, family planning, conferences, administrative costs other than those covered by 1(a) above, gender or DEI ideology programs, transgender surgeries, or other non-life saving assistance.
(c) Migration and Refugee Assistance (MRA) may only be used to support activities under section 1(a) and for repatriation of third country nationals to their country of origin or safe-third-country.
2. Additional waivers or exceptions for humanitarian assistance not covered by this waiver may be sought through the Director of Foreign Assistance at the Department of State. Implementing partners and NGOs are to work through their U.S. government agency partners on such requests.

U.S. Eases Aid Freeze With Waiver To Resume Humanitarian Aid Programmes

The U.S. government has said President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration must take full responsibility for the health of Zimbabweans, including procuring anti-retroviral therapy and ensuring clinics are properly staffed with nurses.
Reports indicate that since Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980, the U.S. has provided over US$5 billion in humanitarian and development assistance, including more than $1 billion in the past three years alone.
The United States remains the largest provider of development and humanitarian aid, with key initiatives like the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), and the Feed the Future Hunger and Food Security Program.
However, the Trump administration recently suspended donor support globally. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is now working to strengthen its health, development, and cultural exchange programs.
In a statement released Wednesday, the U.S. Embassy in Zimbabwe confirmed that, in line with President Trump’s Executive Order on Reevaluating and Realigning U.S. Foreign Aid, Secretary Rubio has paused all U.S. foreign assistance funded by or through the State Department and USAID for review. Reads the statement:

At this moment, in order to do a thorough review, all programs and grants without a waiver approved by the Secretary of State using foreign assistance funding are paused.

The United States has called on the Zimbabwean government to implement comprehensive political and financial reforms to restore the country’s former prosperity, reported <a href="https://www.voanews.com/a/us-urges-zimbabwe-to-double-down-on-reforms/7876700.html">VOA</a>.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the High-level Structured Dialogue Platform Meeting on Arrears Clearance and Debt Resolution in Harare on Monday, Pamela Tremont, the United States Ambassador to Zimbabwe, said that the U.S. seeks to foster cordial relations with the southern African nation. Said Tremont:

We’re here today as part of our commitment to the Zimbabwe people that is long-standing and consistent, and we’re here to advocate for the reforms that the international community has been asking for for many years.
We’re quite clear — we need public officials to quit using their public offices for private gain. We need the judiciary to be able to deliver justice independently of political considerations.

She said the United States also wants “the rights to assembly and free speech to be fully respected,” in Zimbabwe.
Akinwumi Adesina, the president of the African Development Bank (AfDB), called for negotiations on the debt to be expedited. He said:

It is clearly time to bring this to a close — end the decades of untold damage to the economy of Zimbabwe, the suffering of its people, and have a new beginning with collective hope, aspiration and shared prosperity for its people, today and well into the future. It is time to make Zimbabwe beautiful again.
No one, no matter how strong, can run up a hill carrying on their back piles of sand. The $21 billion debt of Zimbabwe, of which the bulk is actually arrears, has made arrears the new debt stacked like piles of sandbags on the back of Zimbabwe.
We all agree we must play our part to correct this anomaly and give a new lease of life to this nation and its people so Zimbabwe can run again.

Adesina pleaded with institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to finance new loans for Zimbabwe and forgive or reduce old debts.

United States Urges Zimbabwe To Implement Reforms For Prosperity

The United States of America has accused President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Government of lacking the political will to “identify, investigate, or prosecute officials who may have committed human rights abuses”.
In its Zimbabwe 2023 Human Rights Report, the United States Government said significant human rights cases which include credible reports of arbitrary or unlawful killings, extrajudicial killings, cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment by the government and harsh and life-threatening prison conditions, have not been addressed. Reads the report:

The government did not take credible steps to identify, investigate, or prosecute officials who may have committed human rights abuses.
There were credible reports of human rights abuses by criminal gangs in the artisanal and small-scale mining sector. Authorities did not systematically investigate or prosecute such abuses.
There were several reports that the government or its agents committed arbitrary or unlawful killings, including extrajudicial killings, during the year.
On September 15, Persuade Mandara was reportedly killed in Mashonaland Central province by [the] Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
According to the Human Rights NGO Forum, officers investigating his connection with a grain theft case broke into Mandara’s home, assaulted him with burning logs that were being used for cooking, and fired gunshots.
</blockquote>
The United States also alleged that throughout 2023, security forces used excessive force to apprehend, detain and interrogate criminal suspects. It said:

Police and military officers used excessive force and violent means to disperse peaceful demonstrations and to disrupt informal trading. Security forces often acted in the interest of the ruling party.
On January 14, members of the ZRP assaulted Kudzai Kadzere, a member of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), in Budiriro while he was responding to a call for legal assistance by a group of opposition supporters.
ZLHR stated police officers used truncheons and fists to assault Kadzere, leading to injuries including a fractured hand.
</blockquote>
The report also said prison conditions in Zimbabwe were harsh and life-threatening due to overcrowding, food shortages, and lack of water.
It stated that Zimbabwe’s jails are infested with lice, there is a shortage of blankets in the cold season, and prisoners lack of access to personal hygiene products, as well as inadequate sanitary conditions and medical care. Reads the report:

The Constitution and law prohibited arbitrary arrest and detention, although other sections of the law effectively weakened these prohibitions. The government’s enforcement of security laws often conflicted with the constitution.
Security forces arbitrarily arrested and detained persons, particularly political and civil society activists, labour leaders, street vendors and journalists perceived as opposing the government.
The government regularly used arbitrary arrest and detention as tools of intimidation and harassment, especially against opposition party members, political activists, civil society members, journalists, attorneys and ordinary citizens asserting their rights.
</blockquote>
The United States also alleged that the Zimbabwean Government has continued to violate the property rights of citizens. It said:

The Constitution protected property rights, but the government frequently violated this right. On January 7, media reported two ruling party Zimbabwe African National Union-Popular Front (Zanu-PF) activists seized a sugar plantation belonging to a white commercial farmer in Mwenezi, Masvingo province, leaving the owners and scores of workers and their children homeless.

Speaking to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200026164/us-digs-at-mnangagwa-govt">NewsDay</a>, ZANU PF information director Farai Marapira demanded the US to provide evidence substantiating its allegations. He said:

Accusations and observations unsubstantiated by verified facts serve to expose the speaker not the spoken of. The US must lose agendarism [sic] and vindictive engagement with governments that refuse to cower before it.
We are undeterred in our mission to serve our people and the President’s doors remain open to genuine impartial overtures for engagement. In the absence of that, as ZANU PF we march unfazed, unbothered and more resolutely.

In March this year, the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated 11 Zimbabwean individuals including President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who became the first sitting head of State to be designated by the US under its Global Magnitsky Programme early this year. They were designated for their alleged involvement in corruption and serious human rights abuse.

United States Of  America Criticises Mnangagwa Govt's Human Rights Record

U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on Monday, 06 November said President Joe Biden should not attempt to negotiate with the Zimbabwean Government led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa but should rather call out Harare over alleged egregious human rights violations.
In <a href="https://www.foreign.senate.gov/press/rep/release/risch-biden-admin-must-condemn-zimbabwe-governments-severe-repression">a statement</a>, Senator Risch said the U.S. Government should work with its regional and international allies in support of Zimbabweans in their quest to bring about a democratic society. He said:

It is clear the Mnangagwa regime is entrenched. The United States must abandon any misguided belief that it can negotiate with Zimbabwe’s current leaders, who have a lengthy history of human rights abuses, corrupt practices, and anti-democratic actions spanning over two decades. It’s past time the Biden Administration amplifies its condemnation of this severe repression.
The United States should use every diplomatic avenue to forge a coalition of regional and global partners to act in support of the aspirations of the people of Zimbabwe, and who will not ignore the government’s manipulation of the dire democratic, economic, and humanitarian situation for its corrupt benefit.

The U.S. Foreign Relations Committee accuses Mnangagwa’s government of silencing criticism, rampant corruption, and clinging to power through illegitimate methods.
It highlighted reports by local and regional bodies, including the Southern African Development Community (SADC) that the August 2023 general elections failed to meet democratic standards.
The Committee also condemned the expulsion of 15 opposition members of parliament (MPs) and the announcement of new by-elections, saying “this strategy is consistent with past efforts to diminish the opposition’s influence in parliament.” It said:

State-sponsored violence also continues, as evidenced by the abduction and torture of the nation’s youngest member of parliament, the Honorable Takudzwa Ngadziore, which mirrors the mistreatment of other opposition parliamentarians and youth leaders in 2020.
The ongoing arrests and lengthy detentions of opposition figures, like Job Sikhala, on often questionable and politically motivated grounds, illustrate how the government uses the legal system to suppress the opposition and other critical voices.

America Must End Any Talks With Mnangagwa, Says U.S. Top Senator

The United States has expressed concern over reports of assault and abductions of opposition members in Zimbabwe.
Through its embassy in Zimbabwe, the United States urged the Government of Zimbabwe to respect constitutional rights and the fundamental freedoms of all its citizens.
A statement posted on the U.S. Embassy in Zimbabwe’s X page on Thursday afternoon reads:

The United States is deeply disturbed by continued reports of violence, assault &amp; abductions of opposition members in #Zimbabwe. We urge respect for constitutional rights &amp; the fundamental freedoms that underpin them.

This follows the abduction of CCC Member of Parliament Takudzwa Ngadziore, on Wednesday, while on his way to Parliament.
CCC said the youthful MP was dumped in Christon Bank, Mazowe, after he was forcibly undressed, subjected to torture, and injected with an unidentified substance.
Former Mabvuku-Tafara legislator James Chidhakwa (MDC) was also allegedly abducted, tortured and injected with an unidentified substance, recently.
Meanwhile, human rights lawyer Douglas Coltart, on Wednesday staged a solitary protest against the alleged abductions of CCC members by suspected state agents.
Coltart marched along a street in Harare holding a placard with the message: “No to abductions! No to barbarism.”

United States Of America "Disturbed" By Reported Abductions Of CCC Members

United States President, Joe Biden tripped on a sandbag and fell on stage at the Air Force Academy in Colorado on Thursday.
Biden (80), had delivered the commencement address to graduates of the military academy, had just shaken hands with a cadet and had begun walking back to his seat when he fell.
He landed on his right hip before lifting himself up on his right hand, according to <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2023/06/01/politics/biden-us-air-force-academy-trip/index.html">CNN</a>.
A group of men, including an official with the Air Force Academy and two Secret Service agents, helped him back to his feet.
As he got back up, Biden pointed back toward the ground where he tripped, indicating he stumbled on something.
He returned to his seat in the stands without assistance and appeared in good spirits as the ceremony concluded.
Biden had spent more than 90 minutes handing out diplomas and congratulating hundreds of cadets.
Biden is the United States of America’s oldest president and is running for a second term in 2024. He’s had previous stumbles in public.
Despite those incidents, Biden’s doctor has said is physically fit to serve in office.

President Biden Trips, Falls On Air Force Stage

The United States Government says Zimbabwe’s Private Voluntary Organisations (PVOs) Amendment Bill will affect the ability of faith-based organisations to provide essential services if signed into law in its current form.
The PVOs Bill sailed through the Senate on 1 February 2023 and now awaits President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s assent.
The Bill seeks to regulate the operations of civic groups and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
In a report titled: Zimbabwe 2022 international religious freedom report, the US government said:

If passed, members of civil society stated, the amendments would require all trusts to register as PVOs, including faith-based organisations with no transitional provisions.
In meetings with the government, embassy officials raised concerns about the likely impacts of the draft PVOs Amendment Bill on faith-based and other NGOs and their ability to provide essential services, if enacted in its current form.
</blockquote>
Among other provisions, the PVO Bill stipulates that NGOs and civic society organisations (CSOs) should disclose their sources of funding.
The organisations are required to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government defining their activities and zones of geographic coverage.
International NGOs that “digress into programmes that are not specified in the MoU as agreed upon by line ministries and registered by the registrar” will be de-registered.
The Bill gives the government the authority to “deregister any private voluntary organisation that fails to comply with its conditions of registration.” The US report added:

Religious and civil society groups reported increased government monitoring of public events, prayer rallies, church congregations, and activities of religiously affiliated NGOs perceived to be critical of the government.
NGOs and religious leaders continued to report that security services targeted some religious officials who engaged in political discourse perceived as negative towards the government.
According to faith leaders, intelligence officials asked churches to submit their transcripts or recordings of specific sermons thought to be critical of the government.

In February this year, Mnangagwa said that he will “speedily” sign into law the Private Voluntary Organisation Bill (PVO) once it reaches his desk.
He said no amount of pressure from foreign governments will stop the signing of the Bill into law.
Critics argue that some provisions of the Bill may serve as the basis for restricting the operation of many NGOs.

Zimbabwe and the United States have had strained relations since the turn of the Millenium when the former embarked on the land redistribution programme.
The United States responded to Zimbabwe’s land reform policy by imposing economic sanctions on the southern African country through the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act of 2001.

United States Congratulates Zimbabwe On 43rd Independence Anniversary

United States President, Joe Biden has named his nominees for ambassadorship roles in Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Niger.
The U.S. foreign relations committee held confirmation hearings for Biden’s ambassadorship nominees to the four African countries on Wednesday.
According to <a href="https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/biden-names-nominees-for-zimbabwe-rwanda-nigeria-and-niger-ambassadorship-20230303">News24</a>, ambassador-designate to Zimbabwe, Pamela Tremont, has 30 years of experience in foreign services.
Tremont said she will actively work to support the democratic aspirations of Zimbabweans. She said:

President Biden Names Nominee For Zimbabwe Ambassadorship

The United States of America has extended the sanctions that it imposed on Zimbabwe in 2003.
In <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2023/03/01/notice-on-the-continuation-of-the-national-emergency-with-respect-to-zimbabwe-3/">a statement</a> released by the White this Wednesday, 01 March 2023, U.S. President Joe Biden said the restrictive measures initially promulgated through Executive Order 13288 shall continue in effect beyond March 6, 2023. Reads the statement:

<h2>Notice on the Continuation of the National Emergency with Respect to Zimbabwe</h2>
On March 6, 2003, by Executive Order 13288, the President declared a national emergency and blocked the property of certain persons, pursuant to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (50 U.S.C. 1701-1706), to deal with the unusual and extraordinary threat to the foreign policy of the United States constituted by the actions and policies of certain members of the Government of Zimbabwe and other persons to undermine Zimbabwe’s democratic processes or institutions.
These actions and policies had contributed to the deliberate breakdown in the rule of law in Zimbabwe, to politically motivated violence and intimidation in that country, and to political and economic instability in the southern African region.
On November 22, 2005, the President issued Executive Order 13391 to take additional steps with respect to the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13288 by ordering the blocking of property of additional persons undermining democratic processes or institutions in Zimbabwe.
On July 25, 2008, the President issued Executive Order 13469, which expanded the scope of the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13288 and authorized the blocking of property of additional persons undermining democratic processes or institutions in Zimbabwe.
The actions and policies of certain members of the Government of Zimbabwe and other persons to undermine Zimbabwe’s democratic processes or institutions continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the foreign policy of the United States.
For this reason, the national emergency declared on March 6, 2003, and the measures adopted on that date, on November 22, 2005, and on July 25, 2008, to deal with that emergency, must continue in effect beyond March 6, 2023.
Therefore, in accordance with section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622(d)), I am continuing for 1 year the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13288.
This notice shall be published in the Federal Register and transmitted to the Congress.

United States President Joe Biden Extends Sanctions On Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe will host United States and Russian Federation envoys at the same time this week.
The visits come a year into the war in Ukraine that has raised tensions between the United States and Russia.
According to <a href="https://www.news24.com/news24/africa/news/balancing-act-zimbabwe-hosts-us-and-russian-envoys-at-the-same-time-20230301">News24</a>, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of African Affairs Robert Scott is expected to land in Zimbabwe a few hours before the Russians land in Harare.
The Zimbabwean government said that Scott will be in the country to review the “reform priorities” of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government, “especially in the last five years”.
On the other hand, Russia’s minister of foreign affairs and economic relations from the Sverdlovsk region of the federation, Yarin Vyacheslav was also expected in Zimbabwe later on Wednesday afternoon.
Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade said Vyacheslav will be accompanied by Igor Zelenkin, the deputy minister of industry and trade in the Sverdlovsk region. The Ministry said:

During the visit, the delegation will also tour industrial sites specialising in timber processing, the production of rubber and pharmaceutical substances.

It added that the visit was necessitated by the two countries’ “existing excellent political relations”.
The United States is currently working on a law to sanction African countries that trade with Russia.
The proposed law, Countering Malign Russian Activities in Africa Act, was crafted last year and is yet to reach U.S. President Joe Biden’s desk.
However, some African countries, including Zimbabwe and South Africa, have refused to cut their deep roots with Russia.
In fact, last month, Russia’s close ally, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko was Zimbabwe on a State visit.
Lukashenko said last week that his country would take Russia’s side in the Ukrainian war if attacked.

Zimbabwe Hosts US And Russian Envoys At The Same Time

The United States of America says Zimbabwe is moving backwards and is in worse shape now compared to its heyday in the 1990s, amid concerns of an economic crisis and human rights violations.
US Under Secretary for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland told a virtual news conference on Friday following her visit to South Africa, Botswana, Tanzania and Niger that Zimbabwe in the 1990s was “beautiful” but now was falling back. She said:

As you said, there are democracy challenges all over Africa. There is backsliding.
Some — I remember being in Zimbabwe in the 1990s, and it was one of the most beautiful and prosperous and relatively open countries, but it’s a far cry from that now.

She also said US President Joe Biden will not hesitate to condemn human rights abuses and speaking against corruption and other vices. Said, Nuland:

We are not going to be shy. President Biden is not shy, as you saw when he met with President Vladimir Putin (Russia) in Geneva, a meeting that I was honoured to join, and he spoke about our concerns about democracy and human rights.
And we will speak honestly and candidly to countries when we have concerns. And frankly, if countries are choosing a more autocratic path, it will constrain what we can do together.

Relations between the US and Zimbabwe have been strained since 2001 when Washington imposed targeted sanctions on Harare over alleged electoral theft and human rights violations, which the former President, the late Robert Mugabe denied.
The US’ stance towards Zimbabwe has not softened since the 2017 military coup as it accuses President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government of corruption and the use of the military and State security agents to suppress democratic space.

United States: Zimbabwe In Worse Shape Now Than During The 1990s

The United States Embassy in Harare has advised American nationals residing in Zimbabwe to avoid the Central Business District (CBD) in Harare and Bulawayo and to keep a low profile because of anticipated protests by political activists on 31 July.
In a statement, the Embassy also urged American nationals to immediately leave areas where demonstrations erupt as non-participating bystanders can unintentionally get caught in the middle of erupting violence. Part of the statement read:
<blockquote>Local political figures have called for a potentially large protest against the Zimbabwean government and corruption on July 31 while others have called for counter-protests. There is a real possibility for clashes between the opposing groups of protesters and security forces.
Past demonstrations have been met with aggressive tactics by police to suppress protests. Crackdowns by security forces in high-density areas leading up to and immediately following civil disturbances and internet/social media interruptions are possible.</blockquote>

The Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) has lashed out at the United States of America over what it termed as its Big Brother mentality. The war veterans said that they will not be dictated to and spoke out against the US’s alleged interference in Zimbabwe’s affair by extending sanctions through the Zidera Act. Addressing the media, ZNLWVA secretary general Victor Matemadanda said,
<blockquote>The big brother mentality of America is what we don’t want. Our President has opened every democratic space, he has tried to engage. But America by extending ZIDERA they are slapping us in the face.
Post-election violence was an aggression done by the opposition. In South Africa, at Marikana, people were killed but there were no sanctions. If America is going to behave like this, we are going to tell our government to forget about engaging America… we are no longer slaves of Americans. For anyone, Trump included, to think we are patient slaves of America, no! We got our independence through the barrel of a gun, we still have our guns.
…What we have here is African democracy. We define our own democracy, ours is different from Abraham Lincoln’s democracy. We are not inferior in everything, this is why we conquered them in the battlefield.</blockquote>

We Define Our Own African Democracy, We Are Against America's Big Brother Mentality - War Veterans

The United States House of Representatives has passed the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Amendment Act ahead of the July 30 harmonised elections saying that the bill is a call for free and fair elections as well as reforms. The Bill has now been passed by both the Senate and the Representatives, the two houses which form the United States Congress. The bill now needs President Donald Trump’s signature to come into effect.
In a statement Ed Royce, Chairman of the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs said,
<blockquote>I want to thank Senators Flake and Coons for their leadership and sustained engagement on this issue. I also want to thank Chairman Smith and Ranking Member Bass for their focus on Zimbabwe at the Africa subcommittee.
On July 30th, the people of Zimbabwe will have the opportunity to vote for their next president. As the first election since Robert Mugabe, this is a pivotal moment for Zimbabwe. For 37 years, Zimbabweans have suffered greatly under authoritarian rule and economic devastation. The government drove the economy into the ground and violently suppressed any opposition to their power.
With elections now just days away, the situation in Zimbabwe should be viewed with cautious optimism. I am encouraged by some of the statements and actions taken by the government. President Mnangagwa, along with key opposition candidates, signed a public pledge to ensure peaceful elections. The opposition is allowed to campaign across the country, the voter roll has been released for inspection and U.S. and international observers will be permitted to observe the elections.
However, reports of voter intimidation, efforts to politicize food aid and increased military presence in rural polling stations are deeply concerning. The people of Zimbabwe, as well as the international community, remember the horrific violence that occurred during the 2008 elections. That cannot happen again.
That’s why this legislation is so critical. This bill makes important changes to update the 2001 Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act. It lays out our expectations for a free and fair election, as well as actions needed to achieve key economic reforms. The expectations of the 2001 legislation hold true today – Zimbabwe must make credible progress towards holding free and fair elections, restore the rule of law and ensure military subordination to the civilian government, among other desperately needed reforms. These are realistic and universally recognized standards.
Both the government and the opposition must follow through on their statements to hold a free, fair and credible election on July 30th. This is an opportunity to chart a dramatic new course for Zimbabwe. We urge the next president to take bold and immediate action to address key governance and economic issues. We stand by the people of Zimbabwe in their efforts to see a more democratic, peaceful and prosperous Zimbabwe.”</blockquote>

U.S. Congress Passes Zidera Amendment Bill To Call For Reforms Ahead Of Elections, Bill Awaits Trump's Signature

The Zimbabwe Immigration Department has reviews Visa fees for United States citizens after the two countries agreed to create uniformity in Visa policies. After the review, United States tourists will now have to pay $160 for multiple entry visas. In the past, they had to pay the following on arrival,

<li>$45 for Double Entry</li>
<li>$55 for Multiple Entry</li>
</ul>
Immigration Principal director  Clemence Masango said,
<blockquote>Following bilateral consultations between the government of the United States of America and the government of the Republic of Zimbabwe, the following amendments to the visa regime between the two countries have been agreed upon for immediate implementation. These are,
a) American government officials assigned to Zimbabwe will be accorded accreditation status of one year on assumption of duty;
b)American tourists will now be issued with multiple entry visas on arrival valid for twelve, (12) months at a fee of $160;
c)American students enrolled at institutions of higher and tertiary education now pay $160 from the current $200 for a student permit; and
d) Those enrolled in primary and secondary schools now pay $160 from the current $100 for a scholar’s permit. All other conditions remain unchanged. </blockquote>
