Newly elected Kenyan President William Ruto made his debut address to the United Nations General Assembly as a head of state on Wednesday.
Ruto made his presentation at the UNGA days after arriving from London where he attended the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
In his address, Ruto called for the removal of the unilateral sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe and Cuba by Western powers saying they undermine the sovereignty of the targetted countries and also worsen the suffering of millions of innocent people. He said:

There might never be a more opportune time to revisit the practice of unilateral coercive actions, which often violate fundamental tenets of a rule-based international order, such as those imposed on Zimbabwe and Cuba.
Apart from undermining the sovereign equality of nations, they also indiscriminately punish the general citizenry, reserving their bitterest sting for innocent hustlers and the vulnerable. This compounds injustice and worsens suffering.
</blockquote>
Ruto also called for urgent action to deal with challenges facing mankind such as climate change, the global food crisis, terrorism, cybercrime, and armed conflict.

President Ruto Tells United Nations Zim Sanctions Must Go

President Emmerson Mnangagwa reportedly ran away from a group of angry Zimbabweans, who were waiting for him at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
Opposition People’s Patriotic Party (PPP) leader, Zvaringeni Samuel Chasi, told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200000796/1-500-women-die-giving-birth">NewZimbabwe.com</a> that Mnangagwa had a human shield of an estimated 225 aides to stave off the protestors.
Chasi said about 34 Zimbabweans had planned to embarrass the ZANU PF leader upon his arrival, but he used a different exit from the one he was supposed to use where the protestors were waiting for him. Said Chasi:

We were about 34 people, local Zimbabweans and around 80 who joined online in solidarity. We are going to UNGA and his residency.
The citizens have vowed they are going to do a citizen arrest on him. Everyone is going to be down on the ground here today and tomorrow. We are not going to stop. He might not go back to Zimbabwe. He is in trouble.
The picketing was successfully done although he used a different exit from the one he was supposed to use.
He arrived two hours earlier, he arrived nicodemously. It is said he had security personnel of about 225 people.
The protests are not yet over. Everyone is on him. He is on the run.

The protestors want to put pressure on the international community to intervene and arrest Mnangagwa for alleged gross human rights violations, including rape, mass genocides, torture and abductions.
Mnangagwa is currently in New York for the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting where he is expected to address other Heads of State.

Mnangagwa Evades Protesting Zimbabweans In New York | Report

The African Union has repeated its call for the lifting of Western-imposed sanctions against Zimbabwe at the UN General Assembly.
Speaking at the 77th Ordinary Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Macky Sall, President of the Republic of Senegal and Acting President of the African Union, said the sanctions have worsened the suffering of Zimbabweans. He said:

… the African Union calls, once again, for the lifting of foreign sanctions against Zimbabwe.
These severe measures continue to feed a feeling of injustice against an entire people and aggravate their suffering in these times of deep crisis.

Last week the United States of America announced the removal of 11 individuals from the Zimbabwe sanctions list.
The <a href="https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/jy0953">U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC),</a> however, designated one Zimbabwe individual on the Specially Designated Nationals List (SDN List) under the Zimbabwe sanctions program.
The US Treasury said sanctions do not target the Zimbabwean people, the country of Zimbabwe, or Zimbabwe’s banking sector.
It said the sanctions program targets human rights abusers and those who undermine democratic processes or facilitate corruption.

African Union Repeats Call For The Lifting Of Sanctions Against Zimbabwe

President Emmerson Mnangagwa left the country on Monday night for New York, United States of America, to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
This year’s UNGA will be the first to be held face to face following a two-year break because of COVID-19-related travel restrictions.
For the last two years, UNGA has been taking place virtually through pre-recorded speeches.
Mnangagwa was seen off at the Robert Mugabe International Airport by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, Cabinet Ministers, senior Government officials and service chiefs.
He is expected to address the UNGA during the course of this week.
UNGA 77 which is running under the theme, “A watershed moment: transformative solutions to interlocking challenges”, started on Monday, 19 September.
In a press briefing on 14 September, UN secretary-general António Guterres said dialogue and debate are key to finding solutions to the challenges facing the world which include war, hunger and climate change, among others. He said:

Our world is blighted by war, battered by climate chaos, scarred by hate, and shamed by poverty, hunger and inequality.
As fractures deepen and trust evaporates, we need to come together around solutions. People need to see results in their everyday lives, or they will lose faith in their governments and institutions, and they will lose hope in the future.
That hope can indeed only come through the dialogue and debate that are the beating heart of the UN and that must prevail next week against all divisions.
</blockquote>
UNGA is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations.

Mnangagwa Off To New York For UN General Assembly

There were a handful of people in the auditorium when president Emmerson Mnangagwa delivered his speech at the 74th United Nations General Assembly session in New York.
Observers noted that the auditorium was always fully packed when the late former president Robert Mugabe was delivering his speeches.
The difference has been attributed to a sense of anticipation that overwhelmed delegates when Mugabe would take to the podium. Mugabe was known for speaking freely and frankly. Watch the video below.
