Applications For 2025-2026 Chevening Scholarships Are Now Open

Two videos of a bullying attack on a boy identified as Zimbabwean in the UK has gone viral on social media. The bullying incident itself is said to have happened this week, in a place called Carlisle, Cumbria in the UK. 
In the two videos that were <a href="https://twitter.com/Oluomoofderby/status/1768752973042037239/">posted on Twitter</a>, a white boy rushes to the Zimbabwean boy and punches him several times, pushes him, and then asks him “Get on your knees and kiss my shoes”.
The visibly frightened victim gives in.

As the incident happens it seems there are several onlookers commenting and some of them laughing. It is not clear who recorded the video. The bully was not in school uniform so it is also unclear if he is a student at the same school as the Zimbabwean boy.
One source has told Pindula that he’s familiar with people known to the boy and that they are Zimbabwean. He also said that people close to the situation have suggested that the boy has always been bullied at school because of his visibly strong Zimbabwean accent.
<h2>Arrest of the bully</h2>

<h2>Racism or just Bullying?</h2>
As the video circulated, there have been arguments on social media with some claiming it’s just regular bullying, while others said it’s a race issue.
The bully is a white boy. The Zimbabwean victim is an African.
The Twitter user who posted the videos, Olumo of Derby, commented:

“Racism in the UK is getting worse everyday. A black child was racially abused and beaten up today at St John Henry Newman Catholic School in Carlisle. Are black people not safe in Carlisle?”
</blockquote>
Another user commented:
<blockquote>
Was this racially motivated or was it just a horrible bully picking on a class mate? I see many videos of black kids beating up white kids, I never immediately jump to racism.
</blockquote>
And another who claims to live in Carlisle posted:

I live in Carlisle and have done my whole life. I one hundred percent believe that this is racist. Carlisle is stuck in the 70s with regards to race, gender equality and so on. I feel awful for this boy. But almost worse for the bully because his parents are poisoning him.

There has been increased migration of Zimbabweans to the UK since the 2000, with many seeking greener pastures. Zimbabwe has seen at least 2 prolonged periods of hyperinflation and is currently in the middle of one. Professionals in the health sector have migrated the most in recent years especially following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Video: Zimbabwean Boy Bullied At School In The UK. Bully Arrested Following Viral Videos

The United Kingdom has banned international health and care workers from bringing their dependants to the country on work visas.
The UK Home Office announced the development in a post on its X account on Monday, 11 March. It said:

From today, care workers entering the UK on Health and Care Worker visas can no longer bring dependants. This is part of our plan to deliver the biggest-ever cut in migration.
</blockquote>
A graphic banner accompanying the post reads “Banned: Overseas care workers from bringing dependants. 120 000 people who arrived last year would no longer be eligible under our new rules.”
In December 2023, the UK Home Office announced the plan to reduce levels of legal migration to the UK which it described as “unprecedented” and “unsustainable”.
James Cleverly, home secretary, said apart from the ban on bringing dependents, workers would need to earn at least £38 700 to obtain a visa, up from £26 200. He said:

We will stop overseas care workers from bringing family, dependants and we will require firms in England to be regulated by the Health Care Quality Commission in order for them to sponsor visas.
Approximately, 120,000 dependants accompanied 100 000 care workers in the year ending September 2023, but only 25% of the dependants are estimated to be in work, meaning that a significant number are joining public services rather than helping to grow the economy.
We recognize that healthcare workers do great work in our NHIS and health sector, but it’s also important that immigrants make a big enough financial contribution.
Therefore, it will increase the annual immigration healthcare charge by 66% from £624 to £1035 to raise, on average, £1.3 billion for the health services of the country every year.

UK Bans International Healthcare Workers From Bringing Dependants

Some Zimbabwean single mothers based in the United Kingdom who have been struggling to secure visas for their children to join them abroad were dealt another blow after the UK Government introduced tough immigration laws.
Last week, the British Home Office announced new measures that will make it difficult for Zimbabweans working there to bring along their families.
The UK’s Home Secretary (Minister of Home Affairs), James Cleverly announced plans that will result in the country’s care firms being regulated on visa sponsorship.
Cleverly told parliamentarians that the plan is meant to end the “abuse of health and care visa” as well as stop overseas workers from bringing family dependants.
The minimum salary threshold for foreign skilled workers will be raised to £38 700 (US$ 48 800), from its current level of £26 200 (US$ 33 000).
<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200020844/tears-of-zimbabwean-single-mothers-in-the-uk">NewsDay</a> reported that even before the new visa regime, single mothers, particularly those who went to the UK on the Tier 2 Healthcare visa, faced challenges in their efforts to bring or go with children.
Women of Zimbabwe (WoZ) says it was recently approached by 12 women to raise their plight with the relevant UK authorities.
WoZ representative and UK-based political and human rights activist, Patricia Chinyoka, told NewsDay that it is even more difficult for women whose children bear the surname of their absent fathers as a consent form is required from them. She said:

We were approached by 12 women who wanted us to raise their plight with the relevant UK authorities.
The majority of them are afraid to speak out and share their stories as they fear reprisals from the Home Office, even under anonymity.
Some of the parents have approached Members of Parliament in their respective regions but this has been ineffective.
On refusal of the children’s dependants’ visas, the Home Office has offered most applicants the option for “administrative review”.
This has proven very costly as legal advice is costing a minimum of £1 000 (US$1 259.70) for consultation alone.
In addition, the parents must pay legal advice in the countries of origin.
It is proving an expensive and unaffordable process, in the UK, they have bills to pay as well.
Some of the affected women are broken emotionally.

A single mother of three (name withheld) told NewsDay that her two-year-old daughter was granted a visa as she carried her surname. She said:

However, the boys were denied visas by the Home Office on the basis that there was no compelling evidence despite submitting a sole responsibility document and affidavit.
The father does not live with nor support the children. Currently, the children are living with their elderly grandmother who has a poor health condition.
</blockquote>
Another single mother with two children from different fathers also shared her story. The children’s visa applications were declined on two occasions. She said:

I intend to apply for the third time despite having spent a lot of money on legal and visa application fees.
</blockquote>
A Zimbabwean lawyer based in Norwich who preferred anonymity said:
<blockquote>
It does not matter even if you are divorced. If the child’s birth certificate has the names of both parents, confirmation is required from the other.
The UK Home Office also wants to know why you want to deprive the other parent of access to children by taking them to the UK.
</blockquote>
According to UK authorities, about 20 152 health and care worker visas were granted to Zimbabweans in the year ending June 2023.
Between 2019 and September 2022, the number of Zimbabweans granted work visas to work in the UK went up 1 576% from 499 to 8 363 applicants.
Zimbabwe’s unending economic challenges are pushing millions of its citizens abroad where some are being exploited.

UK-based Zimbabwean Single Mothers In Distress

The United Kingdom on 24 August 2023, updated its travel advisory for citizens intending to Zimbabwe.
Due to the ongoing electoral processes in Zimbabwe following the general elections that were held on 23 August, the UK advised its citizens in Zimbabwe to avoid any political gatherings or demonstrations. The update reads in part:

UK Zimbabwe Travel Advice, 24 August 2023

A Zimbabwean healthcare worker has been awarded more than £25 000 after she was fired by bosses only days after arriving in the UK when they found out she was pregnant.
The <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12314927/Healthcare-worker-30-came-UK-Zimbabwe-better-version-awarded-25-000-employment-tribunal-sacked-pregnant.html">Daily Mail</a> reported on Wednesday, 19 July that Felicity Khupe did not tell bosses she was pregnant when offered employment.
She left Zimbabwe for Britain in 2022 while expecting her second child after a UK firm sponsored her to come.
The 30-year-old was fired after they found she was six months along on her second day.
Khupe then sued Comforting Hands Recruitment for unfair dismissal and maternity discrimination and a tribunal said she “missed out on the excitement of being a mother” and now “lives in fear of being deported”.
The company, based in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, trains staff for deployment to residential homes and nursing homes across Yorkshire, East Riding and the North East.
Giving evidence to the tribunal, Khupe said when she said she was pregnant, the care coordinator said it was a bit tricky and she needed to talk to the director about it.
She said the director visited her the next day, telling her that “unfortunately” because of her pregnancy she could not continue working there. Said Khupe:

[She told me] she was cancelling her Course of Sponsorship so I have to go back to Zimbabwe and I have to do it as soon as possible as I would be given 30 days by the Home Office after which my visa would be cancelled.

Khupe further told the tribunal that she left company accommodation the following Saturday, just one week after arriving from Zimbabwe.
She said she would have taken six months of unpaid maternity leave if she had been able to keep her job, from October 2022 until April this year.

UK: Zimbabwean Healthcare Worker Fired For Being Pregnant Awarded £25 000 Compensation

The United Kingdom has offered millions of public sector workers salary increases in an attempt to end strikes triggered by a cost-of-living crisis.
The pay rise comes as thousands of junior doctors walked off the job in protest for five days.
So-called junior doctors, those who are in the early stages of their careers in the years after medical school, started their strike at 7 AM, demanding a 35 percent pay rise. Health Secretary Steve Barclay said:

This five-day walkout by junior doctors will have an impact on thousands of patients, put patient safety at risk and hamper efforts to cut NHS waiting lists … A pay demand of 35 percent or more is unreasonable and risks fuelling inflation, which makes everyone poorer.
</blockquote>
The UK government decided to accept recommendations for pay increases, Treasury Chief Secretary John Glen said on Thursday.
Junior doctors will now get a 6 percent pay uplift and a lump-sum pay increase of 1 250 pounds (US$1 633.25).
Teachers will get 6.5 percent, police officers 7 percent and armed forces will receive a 5 percent salary increment.
Glen said there would be no new borrowing or spending to fund the increases.
However, teachers’ pay rises will be funded by a reallocation of the existing education department budget.
The pay increases are below the current 8.7 percent inflation rate but are aimed at bridging the gap.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has promised to halve inflation and ministers have stressed the danger that increasing wages too far will undermine that goal and fuel rising prices.

UK Govt Offers Civil Servants Pay Rise As Junior Doctors Strike

The United Kingdom (UK) is refusing to recognise metal driver’s licences for Zimbabweans living in that country.
This comes after the Zimbabwean Government recently launched plastic driver’s licences to replace metal discs.
The new licence has 13 categories which conform to the requirement of the United Nations Convention on Road Traffic International Organisation for Standardisation and International Electro-Technical Commission.
<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200013242/uk-spurns-zim-metal-drivers-licences">NewsDay</a> has established that Zimbabweans living in the UK are failing to get their metal licences converted for use in that country.
The UK’s Driver’s Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) is refusing to convert the licences saying the old metal licences no longer meet the criteria set by the Central Vehicle Registry (CVR) in Zimbabwe.
Zimbabweans are now required to obtain an original “Certificate of Competency” to have their licences converted for use in the UK.
A certificate of competency is a temporary licence valid for 30 days which is issued to drivers who have passed the practical test at the Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID).
A Zimbabwean living in the UK told NewsDay that the development has affected a lot of care workers. Said the Zimbabwean national:

Affected are a lot of care workers who have to drive from client to client to provide their services.
Also affected are Zimbabwean drivers in the UK who had been using their licences temporarily before converting.
</blockquote>
Responding in an email to Zimbabweans who had sought the embassy’s assistance, the consular officer for Ambassador Tendai Chimbandi said:

The embassy has been consulting with DVLA and they have specified that for purposes of converting a licence they will only accept the Certificate of Competency (Blue paper issued by CVR to a person who has completed their driving test in Zimbabwe) and without it, they are not prepared to convert.
Regrettably, most people discard this document upon issuance of the metal disc.
Without the Certificate of Competency, UK DVLA has insisted that to drive in the UK, an applicant will have to complete the practical and theory tests.

The Government says the plastic licence enables Zimbabweans to drive in Angola, Botswana, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Libya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda and Zambia, without conversion.

UK Rejects Zimbabwean Metal Driver’s Licences

ZANU PF spokesperson Chris Mutsvangwa said that President Emmerson Mnangagwa was not part of the heads of State and government who had a photo opportunity with King Charles III because Zimbabwe is not a Commonwealth member.
Mutsvangwa said this in response to reports Mnangagwa was snubbed during King Charles III’s coronation in London on Saturday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the burial of national hero Abraham Kabasa in Harare on Monday, Mutsvangwa said:

We are not a member of the Commonwealth, the President is determined that we should be readmitted into the group of nations.
</blockquote>
Mutsvangwa added that Zimbabwe does not have the right to get close and personal with the king as it is not a Commonwealth member. He said:

But as for Zimbabwe, we did not have the right because we are not yet a member of the grouping.
When we become a member, we would be part of those who will be close to the king.
We want to engage with countries that we have cordial relationships and re-engage those we have had frosty relationships with in the past.
Our President always says we are friends to all and enemies to none.
We were happy that our President was invited to King Charles III’s coronation.
When he was still a prince, he lowered the Union Jack (British flag) and raised the Zimbabwean flag after we had won the liberation struggle in 1980.
It’s a person who we like a lot and it was imperative for the President to attend.
This shows that the engagement between Harare and London is going in a good direction.

Meanwhile, other African leaders who attended Charles III’s coronation had the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Rishi Sunak but Mnangagwa got to meet the United Kingdom’s Minister for Africa, Andrew Mitchell.
Mnangagwa also met Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland who emphasised Commonwealth values in their discussion centred on re-admission.
Scotland said she was “pleased o welcome the President of Zimbabwe, Mnangagwa to Marlborough House for a courtesy call.”
She said they discussed a range of issues, including Zimbabwe’s ongoing application to rejoin the Commonwealth and reaffirmed the commitment to the values of the Commonwealth.

Mutsvangwa Explains Why ED Missed Photoshoot With King Charles III

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has described his meeting with the United Kingdom’s Minister for Africa Andrew Mitchell as an opportunity to work on the full restoration of relations between Zimbabwe and Britain.
Mnangagwa had travelled to the UK to attend the coronation of the new British monarch, King Charles III and returned home on Sunday. <a href="https://twitter.com/edmnangagwa/status/1655316583378501635">Mnangagwa tweeted</a>:

During my trip to London, I had the fantastic opportunity to sit down with the UK Minister for Africa, [ 
Rt Hon Andrew Mitchell MP].
Understanding what steps the UK thinks we must take and developing the relationship between the UK and Zimbabwe is an exciting opportunity for all of us.

However, Team Pachedu, a group of data analysts active on Twitter, derided Mnangagwa’s trip to London, calling it “a trip of shame.” <a href="https://twitter.com/PacheduZW/status/1655185758930567168">They wrote</a>:

Other African leaders had the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Rishi Sunak but Mnangagwa got to meet Mitchell.

Mnangagwa Hails UK "Trip Of Shame"

UK Deputy Prime Minister, Dominic Raab, who is also the Justice Secretary has resigned after months of allegations about bullying behaviour in the Ministry of Justice and other Whitehall departments.
Raab, a senior Conservative MP, had faced multiple formal complaints over his dealings with civil servants.
It was alleged that he bullied and belittled staff, driving some to tears or causing them to vomit before meetings.
The resignation follows a five-month probe, by a senior lawyer Adam Tolley KC, which was set up by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak after complaints about Raab’s behaviour as a minister.
<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-65333983">BBC</a> reported that Tolley was investigating eight formal complaints of bullying against Raab, who was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary in October 2022.
The bullying complaints, which involved 24 people, relate to Raab’s previous periods as Justice Secretary and Foreign Secretary under Boris Johnson, and his time as Brexit secretary under Theresa May.
Below is Dominic Raab’s resignation letter in full:

Dear Prime Minister,
I am writing to resign from your government, following receipt of the report arising from the inquiry conducted by Adam Tolley KC.
I called for the inquiry and undertook to resign if it made any finding of bullying whatsoever. I believe it is important to keep my word.
It has been a privilege to serve you as deputy prime minister, justice secretary and lord chancellor.
I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work as a minister in a range of roles and departments since 2015 and pay tribute to the many outstanding civil servants with whom I have worked.
Whilst I feel duty bound to accept the outcome of the inquiry, it dismissed all but two of the claims levelled against me.
I also believe that its two adverse findings are flawed and set a dangerous precedent for the conduct of good government.
First, ministers must be able to exercise direct oversight with respect to senior officials over critical negotiations conducted on behalf of the British people, otherwise, the democratic and constitutional principle of ministerial responsibility will be lost.
This was particularly true during my time as foreign secretary, in the context of the Brexit negotiations over Gibraltar, when a senior diplomat breached the mandate agreed by cabinet.
Second, ministers must be able to give direct critical feedback on briefings and submissions to senior officials, in order to set the standards and drive the reform the public expects of us.
Of course, this must be done within reasonable bounds. Mr. Tolley concluded that I had not once, in four and a half years, sworn or shouted at anyone, let alone thrown anything or otherwise physically intimidated anyone, nor intentionally sought to belittle anyone.
I am genuinely sorry for any unintended stress or offence that any officials felt, as a result of the pace, standards and challenge that I brought to the Ministry of Justice.
That is, however, what the public expects of ministers working on their behalf.
In setting the threshold for bullying so low, this inquiry has set a dangerous precedent. It will encourage spurious complaints against ministers, and have a chilling effect on those driving change on behalf of your government – and ultimately the British people.
Finally, I raised with you a number of improprieties that came to light during the course of this inquiry.
They include the systematic leaking of skewed and fabricated claims to the media in breach of the rules of the inquiry and the Civil Service Code of Conduct, and the coercive removal by a senior official of dedicated private secretaries from my Ministry of Justice private office, in October of last year. I hope these will be independently reviewed.
I remain as supportive of you and this government, as when I first introduced you at your campaign leadership launch last July.
You have proved a great prime minister in very challenging times, and you can count on my support from the backbenches.

UK Deputy Prime Minister Quits After Bullying Allegations

Zimbabwean nurses and doctors have expressed despair after the World Health Organisation (WHO) banned the recruitment of health professionals from Zimbabwe.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/health/article/200009362/nurses-fret-over-global-recruitment-ban">NewsDay</a>, Zimbabwe Professional Nurses Union (ZPNU) secretary-general Douglas Chikobvu said the massive brain drain in the health sector is due to poor salaries. Said Chikobvu:

As it stands, the future of Zimbabwean nurses set to leave for greener pastures has been dealt a big blow.
The government has been sort of abusive in how (it is) handling the plight of nurses.
Instead of addressing the root causes, (it is) coming up with a raft of measures to tie our already impoverished and starving nurses.
The reason for the massive brain drain is due to measly wages. What we all expected the government to do was to swiftly address bread and butter issues by awarding nurses a living wage in US dollars.

Following the move by WHO, the United Kingdom placed Zimbabwe on the Red List which means that active recruitment is not permitted from the southern African country.
Active international recruitment in the code is defined as the process by which UK health and social care employers target individuals to market UK employment opportunities, with the intention of recruiting to a role in the UK health or social care sector.
It includes both physical or virtual targeting, and whether or not these actions lead to substantive employment.
According to the latest statistics by the UK’s Office of National Statistics, at least 3 000 Zimbabwean health professionals left the country for the UK in the past two years.
Zimbabwe was among the top five countries that registered the highest number of citizens granted work visas to Britain during the same period.

Global Recruitment Ban A Huge Blow - Zimbabwean Nurses

The North Yorkshire County Council in the United Kingdom has recruited 29 qualified social workers from South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The first group of social workers arrived in Harrogate towards the end of last year and the second group arrived in January and February of this year.
The new arrivals have been given three weeks of training and will also be assisted to settle in the United Kingdom.
The <a href="https://www.harrogateadvertiser.co.uk/news/people/social-workers-recruited-from-zimbabwe-and-south-africa-begin-work-in-harrogate-4047049">Harrogate Advertiser</a> quoted North Yorkshire County Council’s Conservative executive member for health and adult services, Councillor Michael Harrison, as saying:

We have recruited 29 qualified social workers from South Africa and Zimbabwe using a network of specialist agencies and working alongside other councils.
They will work across the county in what is a great opportunity to help this group of professional social workers further their careers in North Yorkshire whilst filling vacancies in specialist areas where there is a national workforce shortage.
We will monitor the success of this recruitment campaign closely, whilst continuing to advertise our current vacancies regionally and nationally.

The report says the North Yorkshire County Council decided to recruit social workers from Zimbabwe and South Africa after several large recruitment campaigns in the United Kingdom for more than 30 social worker vacancies had “very limited” success.
The report says the new recruits were also often newly qualified social workers and were not yet ready to manage more complex work.
On any given day, there are at least 1 000 care jobs available across the United Kingdom.

Social Workers Recruited From Zimbabwe Begin Work In Harrogate, UK

Zimbabwe could lose more qualified teachers to brain drain in the coming months after Britain said it will start recruiting teachers from the country and three other African nations.
Zimbabwean teachers are eligible for a qualified teacher status (QTS) in the United Kingdom with effect from 1 February 2023.
Qualified teacher status is a confirmation that one has the right training and meets the standards required to teach in most primary and secondary schools in England.
Local unions representing teachers on Wednesday warned that the country could face a mass exodus of teachers in the coming months.
Progressive Teachers Union Zimbabwe (PTUZ) secretary-general Raymond Majongwe said:

There are calls for teachers even in the southern African region countries such as Botswana and South Africa, among others.
This year alone, we have 15 teachers who have formally bid farewell to us, not talking of those who are silently packing their bags.
Teachers have also been captured by UK job vacancies. It is a sad story. Elderly teachers should be enjoying the fruit of their work in Zimbabwe, but they are going to other countries to work there.
We are suffering a serious brain drain in the country that will affect starting this year and beyond.

British Embassy In Harare To Close For Christmas

China has recalled six diplomats from the United Kingdom who police wanted to question over the alleged assault of a man while protesting outside the Chinese consulate in Manchester in October.
British foreign minister James Cleverly welcomed the removal of the officials, including the Consul General in Manchester.
Cleverly had raised British concern over the incident with Chinese diplomats.
British police had been investigating allegations that a protestor was beaten by several men after being dragged inside the grounds of the consulate in Manchester during a demonstration against Chinese President Xi Jinping.
On Wednesday Cleverly told reporters that the UK police had requested six Chinese officials waive diplomatic immunity so they could be questioned and the embassy had been informed. He said:

In response to our request, the Chinese government has now removed from the UK those officials, including the Consul General himself.

China Recalls Six Diplomats From UK After Consulate Violence

A Zimbabwean woman, Josephine Siziba, was recently elected councillor on a Labour Party ticket in Benton Ward, in Newcastle, United Kingdom (UK).
Siziba celebrated her victory with a cultural inauguration ceremony presided over by dethroned Ntabazinduna Chief Nhlanhlayamangwe Ndiweni this weekend.
Speaking in an interview with <a href="https://cite.org.zw/another-zim-woman-elected-ward-councillor-in-the-uk/">CITE</a>, Ndiweni said that the more Zimbabweans are elected to political office around the world, the more the diaspora community will influence Zimbabwe’s domestic politics. He said:

Such benefits are observed in the election of Rishi Sunak as the first British Prime Minister with an Asian background.

The former chief claimed that there are now over 90 Zimbabweans serving as councillors in various countries, as well as a handful of Members of Parliament. He said:

Zimbabwean Woman Elected Ward Councillor In Britain

The United Kingdom says it does not support or fund any political party in Zimbabwe and has no view on who should win the 2023 general elections.
The British Embassy in Harare on Wednesday released a statement stating its position on the matter.
It also called for an environment that allows all political parties to campaign freely and peacefully, without violence and intimidation. Reads the statement:

The UK does not support or fund any political party in Zimbabwe. We have no view on who should win next year’s elections; that is for Zimbabwean voters to decide. We talk to the Government and to all political parties.
Zimbabwe’s constitution provides for an election process where all political parties are allowed to campaign freely and peacefully, without violence and intimidation, and where voters can vote for the party and the candidates of their choice, without fear of reprisals.
Fulfilling these conditions will allow Zimbabweans to have full confidence in their electoral process.

In Zimbabwe, the Political Parties (Finances) Act [Chapter 2:11] of 2001 prohibits foreign donations to political parties or individual candidates.

Britain Says It Does Not Fund Political Parties In Zimbabwe

ZANU PF Chief Whip Pupurai Togarepi has castigated members of the British House of Lords for allegedly interfering in Zimbabwe’s domestic affairs.
This comes after Lord Robert Hayward, who was an observer at the country’s last general elections, recently questioned the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission’s (ZEC) capacity to conduct free and fair elections.
Speaking in the House of Lords, Lord Hayward said there was no sign that ZEC “will enforce any form of free and fair elections” in 2023.
Togarepi told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/call-to-ban-biased-observers/">The Herald</a> that such statements are uncalled for as they interfere with Zimbabwe’s sovereignty. He said:

We are gravely concerned with statements emanating from our erstwhile colonisers who have now made it a habit to debate issues concerning Zimbabwe, bellying their nauseating colonial hangover tinged by false pretensions of democracy and human rights.
This concern with our Chapter 12 Commissions from foreign countries is a breach of international statutes and even our own laws that brook no interference in local electoral processes.
Our re-engagement and engagement efforts must not be mistaken as docility, weakness, or desperation.
We are friends to all and enemy to none, but still mindful of our duty as the ruling party to safeguard our sovereignty from evil machinations that are brewed day in and day out by unremorseful yet wistful former colonial masters masquerading as democrats.
We hope the House of Lords remembers that Zimbabwe got its independence in 1980 and cannot be toyed with like some colonial outpost.

Togarei said the British House of Lords should leave Zimbabwe alone and debate about issues concerning their nationals such as soaring inflation and the high cost of living.

ZANU PF "Gravely Concerned" About Remarks Made In Britain's House Of Lords - Togarepi

The United Kingdom is set to engage South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa to lead other African leaders to push President Emmerson Mnangagwa to ensure that Zimbabwe holds free, fair and credible elections in 2023.
The issue was debated in the British House of Lords last Thursday after it was raised by Baroness Kate Hoey. She said:

My Lords, the noble Lord, Lord Oates has outlined the shocking violence perpetrated by ZANU PF and Mnangagwa on anyone, really, who opposes the regime.
The economic situation is dire, and hunger is being used against anyone who opposes the regime.
Does not the visit of the South African President — the first state visit under His Majesty the King — give the government a wonderful opportunity to work with the South African government and talk to them about how they, and other countries in Africa, can influence together to ensure that there really will be free and fair elections next year in Zimbabwe?

In his response, the UK’s minister of State, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Frank Zacharias Robin Goldsmith said the issue of Zimbabwe will be discussed during Ramaphosa’s visit. He said:

There is no doubt that South Africa, and indeed southern African countries, not least through SADC, have a particular ability to influence Zimbabwe, far more so than we can.
I am sure that the topic we are discussing today will be on the agenda when the visit happens.

Lord Robert Hayward, who was one of the Commonwealth election observers in the 2018 elections in Zimbabwe, said the elections were not free and fair and challenged the UK to put pressure on the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC). He said:

My lords, reference has already been made to the elections in 2018; at that time I was one of the observers from this country on behalf of the Commonwealth, with the noble Baroness, Lady Jay.
The report was pretty damning, particularly in relation to the events after the general election in 2018.
Can my noble friend (Goldsmith) ensure that very strong representations are made to the electoral commission because it has been lamentable in any action?
It was before the 2018 election, and there is no sign that it will enforce any form of free and fair elections next year.

Goldsmith said the British government was aware that Mnangagwa is keen on re-establishing cordial relations between the two countries and that gives the UK an opportunity to put pressure on Harare to reform. He said:

Rishi Sunak was on Tuesday, 25 October confirmed as the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister taking over from Mary Elizabeth “Liz” Truss, who was on the job for only 44 days.
Sunak won the Conservative leadership contest after rival Penny Mordaunt failed to secure enough backing from Members of Parliament.

The critical importance of the whole justice system to our country cannot be overstated. It underpins all we do, all we achieve, and all we believe in. I am honoured to have played a part in securing its sustainability for the long term, better-supporting victims, and keeping people safe.
Our Party is at a crossroads. We now have an opportunity to reunite and rebuild and we must take it. We must come together and deliver the mandate we were given by the British people. UK: Two MPs Resign From Cabinet Following Sunak’s Address

The Liberal Democrats, a UK opposition party, has urged the ruling Conservative party to ban former Prime Minister Boris Johnson from standing for leadership again.
This follows the resignation of Liz Truss on Thursday after only 44 days in office.
Truss was voted Prime Minister by members of the Conservative party Johnson following his after a string of scandals.
Johnson is among Tories who are thought to be interested in taking over from Truss, but the Lib Dems say that should not be allowed to happen.
In a statement the Lib Dem deputy leader Daisy Cooper said:

She made the announcement outside Downing Street on Thursday afternoon, making her the shortest-serving prime minister in UK history.
The previous record was set at 119 days by George Canning who died in office in 1827.
Truss’ resignation follows her near-complete loss of political authority which has seen her lose two key ministers and the loss of confidence of almost all her own MPs. 
Truss said she has spoken with the King to notify him that she is resigning as the leader of the Conservative party., reported <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2022/oct/20/uk-politics-live-liz-truss-tories-turmoil-suella-braverman-resigns-fracking">The Guardian</a>.
She said she would remain as prime minister until a successor is chosen.
Earlier Truss met with the chair of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady, where they “agreed that there will be a leadership election to be completed within the next week”. She said:

I recognise though given the situation I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative party.

Truss’ finance minster Kwasi Kwarteng unveiled £45bn of tax cuts in her third week, in what they called a “mini-budget”.
However, the measures were widely blamed for causing huge economic problems and this resulted in Kwarteng’s sacking as chancellor.
Dozens of Tories (Conservatives) called on Truss to step down and her Home Secretary Suella Braverman resigned.
She had to hire former rivals Grant Shapps and Jeremy Hunt to plug the gaps in her top team. Shapps replaced Braverman while Hunt took over as Chancellor of the Exchequer (Finance Minister) from Kwarteng.

I came into office at a time of great economic and international instability.
Families and businesses were worried about how to pay their bills.
Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine threatens the security of our whole continent.
And our country had been held back for too long by low economic growth.
I was elected by the Conservative Party with a mandate to change this.
We delivered on energy bills and on cutting national insurance.
And we set out a vision for a low tax, high growth economy – that would take advantage of the freedoms of Brexit.
I recognise though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.
I have therefore spoken to His Majesty The King to notify him that I am resigning as Leader of the Conservative Party.
This morning I met the Chair of the 1922 Committee Sir Graham Brady.
We have agreed there will be a leadership election to be completed in the next week.
This will ensure we remain on a path to deliver our fiscal plans and maintain our country’s economic stability and national security.
I will remain as Prime Minister until a successor has been chosen.

UK Prime Minister Quits After 44 Days In Office

UK Prime Minister Liz Truss has fired Chancellor of the Exchequer (Finance Minister) Kwasi Kwarteng, the first black person to hold the portfolio, and replaced him with former Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Jeremy Hunt.
Kwarteng, who held the portfolio for only 38 days, cut short a trip to the United States and met Truss for crunch talks in Downing Street.
Truss is expected to announce a U-turn on business tax cuts at a news conference in Downing Street on Friday afternoon.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Kwarteng said he still supported Truss’ vision for economic growth. He wrote:

You have asked me to stand aside as your Chancellor. I have accepted.
When you asked me to serve as your Chancellor, I did so in the full knowledge that the situation we faced was incredibly difficult, with rising global interest rates and energy prices.
However, your vision of optimism, growth and change was right.
As I have said many times in the past weeks, following the status quo was simply not an option.
For too long this country has been dogged by low growth rates and high taxation – that must still change if this country is to succeed.
The economic environment has changed rapidly since we set out the Growth Plan on 23 September.
In response, together with the Bank of England and excellent officials at the Treasury, we have responded to those events, and I commend my officials for their dedication.
It is important now as we move forward to emphasise your government’s commitment to fiscal discipline.
The Medium-Term Fiscal Plan is crucial to this end, and I look forward to supporting you and my successor to achieve that from the backbenches.
We have been colleagues and friends for many years. In that time, I have seen your dedication and determination.
I believe your vision is the right one. It has been an honour to serve as your first Chancellor.
Your success is this country’s success and I wish you well.

UK's First Black Minister Of Finance Sacked After 38 Days In Office

A mental health nurse from Norwich, United Kingdom has launched a campaign to return the body of her cousin to Zimbabwe for burial.
Tina Trueman, the late Zimbabwean national, was 51 when she died on December 22, just over two weeks after the death of her husband Norman.
She moved to the United Kingdom after becoming pen pals with her future husband, whom she married in 2000.
Tina’s cousin, Everjoy Maxwell, a mental health nurse from Norwich, has launched a fundraising campaign so that Tina’s body can be repatriated to Zimbabwe and be buried amongst her family. Said, Maxwell:
<blockquote>The cheapest option would be to cremate her and I take over her ashes next time I visit, but for her family in Zimbabwe, they need the closure of being able to see her body and lay her to rest.
It is so sad. Her husband died on December 6, he was 99, and she just did not take his death well – he was the love of her heart.
She had a heart attack just before Christmas, but we did not know until after she died that she also had COVID-19.</blockquote>
Maxwell has set up a <a href="https://uk.gofundme.com/f/repatriation-to-zim-for-tina-trueman?qid=00dc6705d1c707e989db0e488f82f73d" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Go Fund Me page</a> to raise the £5,000 needed to transport her body back to Zimbabwe, which has already raised more than £1,000.

Nurse Launches Campaign To Repatriate Cousin's Body To Zimbabwe

The Minister Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Harare, Zimbabwe, Zhao Baogang said China is taking good care of Zimbabwean citizens residing in his country and as a result, not a single one of them has died of the novel coronavirus.
In a direct dig on the United Kingdom, Zhao tweeted on Friday morning, saying 29 Zimbabweans have died of COVID-19 in Britain while none has died in China. He wrote:
<blockquote>No Zimbabweans died in China due to COVID- 19. We take good care of them. 29 Zimbabweans die of Covid-19 in UK.
