The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/04/28/jacob-ngarivhume-sentenced-to-four-years-in-jail">conviction and imprisonment</a> of <a class="Markdown_link__9ACHA MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">opposition leader </a><a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Jacob_Ngarivhume">Jacob Ngarivhume</a> last month have been widely criticised by individuals and organizations. 
Ngarivhume <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/04/28/jacob-ngarivhume-sentenced-to-four-years-in-jail">was convicted of incitement to public violence and sentenced to four years in jail</a> for a tweet he posted in July 2020. Twelve months were conditionally suspended, with his case being seen as a threat to the constitutional rights of all <a class="Markdown_link__9ACHA MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Zimbabweans</a>. In the 2020 tweet, Ngarivhume called for a national shutdown to protest against poor leadership by the ZANU PF-led government. Pindula News presents some of the responses to Ngarivhume’s conviction and imprisonment:
<a href="http://pindula.co.zw/Jonathan_Moyo">Jonathan Moyo</a>, a former Information Minister now in exile, claimed that the conviction and imprisonment of opposition leader <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Jacob_Ngarivhume">Jacob Ngarivhume</a> signifies a <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/05/01/jonathan-moyo-says-ngarivhumes-imprisonment-shows-zims-regression-to-gukurahundi-era">regression of Zimbabwe’s judiciary system</a> back to the Gukurahundi era. The Gukurahundi era was a period of political violence from 1983 to 1987. The Zimbabwean military killed an estimated 10 000 to 20 000 people, mostly ethnic Ndebele, under the pretext of suppressing a rebellion by armed dissidents and due to political tensions between ZANU-PF and PF-ZAPU parties.
Julius Malema, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has expressed shock upon learning of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Jacob_Ngarivhume">Jacob Ngarivhume</a>‘s imprisonment in Zimbabwe. He said:

I was shocked to hear that a Zimbabwean Government has jailed Jacob Ngarivhume @NgarivhumeJacob, for demanding accountability through picket lines on how Covid-19 funds were used in 2020 by kleptocratic politicians. Sending an activist to 4 years imprisonment for simply holding different political views is pathetic. Zimbabweans must learn to protect their own, particularly those who are the voice of the voiceless against the corrupt few. The truth will never be incarcerated; Africa we are one.

Amnesty International has urged <a class="Markdown_link__9ACHA MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Zimbabwean authorities</a> to revoke opposition leader Jacob Ngarivhume’s conviction and sentencing. <a class="Markdown_link__9ACHA MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Amnesty International</a>‘s Interim Deputy Director in Southern Africa, Vongai Chikwanda, expressed concern over the growing crackdown on opposition voices and dissent by Zimbabwean authorities, calling for the quashing of Ngarivhume’s sentence and an end to the weaponisation of the law to target opposition figures and those who speak out against corruption.
Ngarivhume’s defense team leader, Professor <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Lovemore_Madhuku">Lovemore Madhuku</a>, plans to appeal both his conviction and sentencing at the <a class="Markdown_link__9ACHA MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">High Court</a> while also applying for bail pending appeal. The team is confident that the High Court will not uphold the conviction, and even if it does, the sentence of 36 months effective is considered outrageous.
Journalist <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Hopewell_Chin%27ono">Hopewell Chin’ono</a> believes Ngarivhume is being persecuted for fighting corruption. 
Former Petrotrade board chair Tinomudaishe Chinyoka expressed anger over the conviction of Jacob Ngarivhume, calling it a travesty and a low point for Zimbabwe. Chinyoka stated that Ngarivhume did not commit a crime, and his rights to <a class="Markdown_link__9ACHA MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">freedom of expression</a> and assembly were guaranteed by the Constitution. He criticised the sentencing of a man to four years in prison for a tweet and questioned the decision of the Public Prosecutor and Magistrate involved in the case, calling for accountability. Chinyoka, a ZANU PF official said:

I might not agree with Ngarivhume’s politics, but he did not commit any crime. Our constitution says he did not commit any crime. And, while there are many that will disagree with me, I hope that they can find one point on which we might all agree. It is this: that as Zimbabweans, we should all be ashamed to live in country where a man can go to prison for four years for a tweet.

<a href="http://pindula.co.zw/Gift_Ostallos_Siziba">Gift Ostallos Siziba</a>, the deputy spokesperson of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) said:
<blockquote>
The conviction of Ngarivhume for calling for a peaceful demonstration as enshrined in our constitution is as shocking as it is revealing of the farcist nature of the Corrupt, unelectable and unpopular regime!

Team Pachedu shared a video and claimed that ZANU-PF youths incited violence during the July 31 peaceful protests by wielding knives, axes, and sjamboks, yet no one was arrested. They suggested that these individuals were the culprits and not Jacob Ngarivhume.

Reactions To Jacob Ngarivhume's Imprisonment

Jacob Ngarivhume who leads the opposition Transform Zimbabwe has apologised for a Twitter post which claimed that his niece died after surgeons at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals mistakenly cut her intestines during a C-section.
His apology came after the medical institution had issued a statement dismissing the politician’s claims. Ngarivhume said:

I need to set the record straight. My remarks on the incident involving my late niece were misleading in that they the put the blame entirely on Pari. That was not my intention.
I was simply highlighting the challenges we are facing with our healthcare system, whether private or public. The doctors at Pari did the best they could under the circumstances but it was very evident they did not have the resources needed to save my niece’s life.
I’m grateful for all the messages that have poured in during this difficult time. And many people have used this opportunity to share their own experiences with our public institutions.
I am not ashamed to say I was wrong. My remarks should have been more clear for that I apologize to the hard-working men and women at Pari who do all they can to save lives under difficult circumstances.
</blockquote>
His apology attracted backlash from commentators who accused him of deliberately lying to tarnish the image of the government.
In his initial Twitter post, Ngarivhume said:

For the past week I have been helping my sister look after her daughter. She passed on yesterday. She was 34. She died after going through a C-section operation to deliver her third baby at Pari. The doctors made a mistake and cut her intestines. She then developed an infection.
They took her for a second operation to correct the error this didn’t work. A 3rd procedure was planned to clean her up but sadly she suffered a cardiac arrest and died.
During her care she was put on an obsolete ventilator in the ICU at Pari. This country has gone to the dogs. 
Very sorry. Our healthcare system is under enormous pressures from a lack of resources, equipment, training. Sadly such stories will continue playing out until something changes.

Jacob Ngarivhume Apologises For Tweet On His Niece's Death At Parirenyatwa

Transform Zimbabwe also held a demonstration against Primary and Secondary Education Minister Professor Paul Mavima’s order for pupils to rewrite an English Paper 2 exam. .
Last week, Mavima ordered the re-writing of the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zmsec) examination after it emerged the paper had leaked. Transform Zimbabwe submitted a petition refusing the re-write to the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Silvia Utete Masango after a scuffle with the police. Protestors promised to return on Friday if the re-write is not scrapped. The opposition party also delivered a petition to the Parliament of Zimbabwe. Transform Zimbabwe had to storm Utete Masango’s office after she refused to accept the petition.
The permanent secretary also apologised for refusing to accept the protestors’ petition and promised them that she will deliver the petition to the minister although the matter is still before the courts. High Court judge Justice Loice Matanda Moyo is expected to deliver a judgment in the matter in which parents represented by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), are challenging Mavima’s move to order a retake of the 2017 O-Level English Paper 2 examination, which he nullified following reports of massive leaking of the test paper through social media.

Opposition Protests Against Order To Rewrite Zimsec Exams

Jacob Mafume’s Transform Zimbabwe (TZ) has accused former Vice-President Joice Mujuru’s Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) of “stealing” its corporate blue and white colours and using the phrase “transformation” on its campaign T-shirts.
Commenting on the issue Mafume said:
<blockquote>Now, ZimPF has moved to the blue colour. As if that in not enough, they now use ‘transformation’, as their catchphrase. This is unacceptable! It’s clear that ZimPF is trying to take advantage of the rising TZ brand for themselves. They want to confuse the electorate and take advantage of the brand we have worked so hard to build.</blockquote>
However ZimPF spokesperson, Jealousy Mawarire, challenged TZ to produce patent certificates for the contested colours. Mujuru denied accusations by United States-based opposition Zimbabwe People First leader, Maxwell Zeb Shumba, that she stole his party name.
