Telecel Zimbabwe employees have declared incapacitation saying the company’s management’s failure to find a solution to the challenges facing the firm has reduced them to destitutes.
Speaking on behalf of workers, Business, Communications and Allied Workers Union of Zimbabwe secretary-general David Mhambare said:

We are worried as a union because workers have been reduced to destitutes as management has failed to find solutions to the challenges bedevilling the company.
Workers are resigning in numbers and most have resorted to resigning and signing six-month contracts so that they get terminal benefits and pensions from Zimnat.

Mambare said the lowest-paid Telecel employee was getting ZWL$70 000 plus US$100 transport, which is paid weekly. He added:

The salaries are not economic and are meaningless in light of the current hyperinflation environment.
</blockquote>
In a letter copied to the Allied Workers Union by a member of the workers’ committee, Telecel employees said they are financially incapacitated to continue reporting for work. The letter reads in part:
<blockquote>
This letter serves to advise that with effect from June 8, employees will not be able to report for duty as they have stated that they no longer have transport money and have fallen into serious arrears as there is no salary being paid.
They regret to advise that they have exhausted all avenues for borrowing money for transport and basic living expenses.
Staff are stating that, until remuneration issues have been resolved, they cannot afford to come to work.
Staff regrets to state the fact that, as much as they have been very loyal to the company, and continue to report for work religiously using borrowed funds, they are in a very deep financial crisis.

In <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/06/23/telecel-zimbabwe-workers-declare-incapacitation/">June 2022, Telecel employees embarked on a strike</a> in protest over low salaries.
The workers claimed incapacitation and also complained about Telecel’s failure to remit their medical aid and funeral policy contributions despite deducting the money from them.
At the time, Mhambare claimed that most of the company’s workers’ salaries were below ZWL$35 000.

Telecel Zimbabwe Employees Declare Incapacitation

Econet announced the launch of its 5G network in Zimbabwe in February 2022. The company rolled out 5G with the help of Ericsson. Econet is the only mobile operator in Zimbabwe currently that has 5G. 
In general, 5G offers internet speeds that are up to 10 times that of 4G. 
With the release of more and more 5G capable phones globally, Zimbabweans may not be clear if these phones are relevant in Zimbabwe.

According to the telecoms industry regulator, POTRAZ,  Econet has a total of 22 5G base stations currently (<a href="https://www.techzim.co.zw/2023/04/potraz-q4-2022-report-out-internet-penetration-now-65-3-theres-more/">based on December 2022 data</a>).  In March this year, Econet promised to deploy more 5G sites around the country but did not commit to any numbers.
<h2>Does it make sense to buy a 5G phone in Zimbabwe?</h2>
As you can see above, the total number of 5G base stations in the whole country is just 22. This is a very small number, especially considering that 5G has a limited range compared to 4G and 3G. 
To put it into perspective, Econet has over 900 4G base stations in Zimbabwe. Based on these numbers, in a practical sense, we can’t really say there is 5G in Zimbabwe.
In the rare case that you live or work in one of the 22 locations listed above that have 5G, it will be worth it for you, yes. Otherwise, there’s no point.
<h2>Does NetOne have 5G?</h2>
As of the writing of this article, NetOne does not have any commercial 5G sites in Zimbabwe.
What about Telecel? We cannot even talk of 5G when it comes to Telecel. The company is struggling to deploy a 4G network, with only 17 of them so far according to the industry regulators report.
<h2>Which phones available in Zimbabwe have 5G?</h2>
This is a hard question to answer because most of the phones in Zimbabwe do not come into the country through the manufacturer’s official channels. 
People buy mobile phones that were made for other markets like US, UK, South Africa, and Australia (basically where Zimbabweans in the diaspora are found). They also buy phones meant for Asia that are imported via market the Dubai gray market channels. 
This means that 5G phones available in these countries can also generally be available on the local market. But again, there’s no point in buying a 5G mobile phone right now. At least it being 5G must not be the reason for buying it.

5G Network Coverage In Zimbabwe - Where Can You Find It? Should You Buy a 5G Phone?

Police in Kwekwe have arrested Romeo Rodgers Shava, who is alleged to be behind a series of copper cable theft cases in the town, following an ambush on one of his runners in Newton.
ZBC News reports that preliminary investigations reveal that an ambush laid by TelOne in the Newton area led to the arrest of 22-year-old Robert Mtetwa, who implicated Shava as his recruiter.
Mtetwa, who was apprehended while in the company of six others, five of whom are on the run, was handed over to Kwekwe CID for investigations.
He confessed to stealing TelOne copper cables along Burma Road in Kwekwe, two days before his arrest. He also showed detectives a place where they burnt the stolen cables.
Mtetwa also indicated that Shava would drop them at designated places to steal TelOne copper cables and they would call him to pick them up after cutting and pulling out the cables.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of stealing TelOne copper cables and was remanded in custody for sentencing.
Meanwhile, Shava was dragged to Gokwe regional magistrate court facing two counts of stealing TelOne copper cables, but he denied the charges.
The magistrate remanded him in custody until the 29th of September. If found guilty of theft of TelOne cables or vandalism of TelOne infrastructure, he will be sentenced to a minimum jail term of 10 years.
<h2>Some Context:</h2>
Copper cable theft has grown into a pandemic in Zimbabwe, particularly for the electricity, telecommunications, and railway parastatals.
Earlier this year, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/ZESA">ZESA</a> claimed that it had lost US$256 million in stolen materials, additional millions in replacement infrastructure and in security mitigation for the same period.
Households are also feeling the heat as they spend days without power and are sometimes asked to pull resources together for the purchase of copper cables.
It is suspected most of the stolen cables are being smuggled to South Africa and they are then shipped further to countries that use the metal in the construction and manufacturing industries.

Police Bust A Syndicate Targeting Copper Cables

Telecel Zimbabwe has launched new US dollar data, voice and SMS bundles which it says are for the convenience of its customers.
According to the mobile network operator (MNO), the bundles are available to the Telecel prepaid customers, as well as selected Telecel red and Telecel business customers.
Telecel Marketing Director Christopher Rubatika said that the bundles are available on *480#.
He added that the bundles are designed in different packages. People can choose daily data, WhatsApp bundles or the new Giga Data bundles for heavy users. Said Rubatika:

For just 1US dollar, Telecel’s daily data bundle has 1024 Mb of data and is valid for 24hrs.
The Giga data bundle 15 that comes with 15360MB is valid for 30 days and it costs only 12USD.

Telecel has also introduced voice bundles. The cost of the voice bundles ranges from a daily bundle of $0.50c that only gives 30 minutes to call, to another one ranging from $4 having 320 minutes to call. Said Rubatika:

We also offer SMS bundles for just $0.50c and it has 230 SMS valid for 14 days. If one needs a monthly bundle, they can get 600 SMS for just a dollar.

Telecel Chief Executive Officer Angeline Vere explained the rationale behind the introduction of the USD bundles. She said:

The introduction of USD bundles is a way of cushioning our valued customers against inflation.
As is the norm, our bundles are affordable and varied offering a choice to all segments of our customer base.

Telecel Introduces USD Data, Voice And SMS Bundles

Telecel while debunking social media reports circulating that it is about to shut down said it was opening more of its shops and franchises to serve its customers who need service during the lockdown. In the statement below, The MNO said it is in the business for the long haul and it was already to serve its customers:

Telecel Zimbabwe has dismissed as false reports claiming that it is was given 30 days by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) to shut down.
A story claiming that the company had been ordered to close was run by The Herald in 2015 and the same story has been circulating on social media platforms recently.
Responding to the rumour, Telecel issued the following statement:

Telecel Responds To Reports Claiming It Is Closing

Telecel Zimbabwe has reportedly cut its workers’ salaries to just ZW$800 (around US$16) per month.
The company allegedly sent an email to its employees, informing them that the pay cuts were due to pressures exerted on the business by Covid-19. The email read:
<blockquote>This mail serves to inform you that due to the lockdown, our revenues have declined whilst our fixed and indirect costs continue to increase. This has put a strain on overall business performance.
A decision has been made to immediately pay a provisional salary through Telecash for the month of April whilst analysis of the financials are being done.

Telecel Cuts Its Employees' Salaries To ZW$800

Workers at Zimbabwe’s third-largest Mobile Network Operator (MNO), <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Telecel_Zimbabwe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Telecel Zimbabwe</a> on Monday morning staged a sit-in at the company’s headquarters in Harare.
The employees have requested an upward review of their salaries and allowances, with reports claiming that they are yet to be paid their January salaries.
The workers are also unhappy with alleged rampant corruption at the managerial level and a working environment which they consider to be a threat to their health.
Telecel management was expected to address the striking workers at 1400hrs on Monday.
