Renco Mine workers have pledged to continue their strike, now on its 11th day, until all outstanding salaries are paid.
The miners downed tools on October 9, 2024, over unpaid wages dating back to July. Renco Mine is a subsidiary of the RioZim Limited Group.
One worker who preferred anonymity told <a href="https://businesstimes.co.zw/renco-mine-workers-down-tools/">Business Times</a>: “We’ve had enough of empty promises. We can’t continue working without being paid for months on end. Management needs to resolve this once and for all.”
When contacted by Business Times for a comment, Renco Mine’s general manager, Irvine Taurayi Nyamukondiwa, directed all inquiries to the corporate communications department.
The publication reported that all attempts to obtain a comment from the corporate communications department were unsuccessful.

Renco Mine Workers Vow To Continue Strike Until Salaries Are Paid

Telecel Zimbabwe employees have declared incapacitation saying the company’s management’s failure to find a solution to the challenges facing the firm has reduced them to destitutes.
Speaking on behalf of workers, Business, Communications and Allied Workers Union of Zimbabwe secretary-general David Mhambare said:
<blockquote>
We are worried as a union because workers have been reduced to destitutes as management has failed to find solutions to the challenges bedevilling the company.
Workers are resigning in numbers and most have resorted to resigning and signing six-month contracts so that they get terminal benefits and pensions from Zimnat.
</blockquote>
Mambare said the lowest-paid Telecel employee was getting ZWL$70 000 plus US$100 transport, which is paid weekly. He added:

The salaries are not economic and are meaningless in light of the current hyperinflation environment.
</blockquote>
In a letter copied to the Allied Workers Union by a member of the workers’ committee, Telecel employees said they are financially incapacitated to continue reporting for work. The letter reads in part:

This letter serves to advise that with effect from June 8, employees will not be able to report for duty as they have stated that they no longer have transport money and have fallen into serious arrears as there is no salary being paid.
They regret to advise that they have exhausted all avenues for borrowing money for transport and basic living expenses.
Staff are stating that, until remuneration issues have been resolved, they cannot afford to come to work.
Staff regrets to state the fact that, as much as they have been very loyal to the company, and continue to report for work religiously using borrowed funds, they are in a very deep financial crisis.

In <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/06/23/telecel-zimbabwe-workers-declare-incapacitation/">June 2022, Telecel employees embarked on a strike</a> in protest over low salaries.
The workers claimed incapacitation and also complained about Telecel’s failure to remit their medical aid and funeral policy contributions despite deducting the money from them.
At the time, Mhambare claimed that most of the company’s workers’ salaries were below ZWL$35 000.

Telecel Zimbabwe Employees Declare Incapacitation

Workers at Waverley Blankets, in Graniteside industrial area, Harare, have gone on strike.
The strike action comes after the company refused to comply with an arbitration outcome that ordered all textile employers to increase their workers’ salaries to a minimum of US$184 per month.
<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200012361/waverley-blankets-workers-strike-over-low-salaries">NewsDay</a> reported that the National Employment Council (NEC) of the Textile Manufacturing Industry recently said any deadlock on wage negotiations in the sector would now be resolved through voluntary arbitration as agreed by the parties. It said:
<blockquote>
Accordingly, the arbitral tribunal awarded that the minimum wage be US$184 with the same percentage differential applying across all grades/levels.
That all companies in the textile manufacturing industry shall pay 45% of minimum wages in United States dollars and the remaining balance of 55% shall be paid in local currency, i.e. Zimbabwe dollar, at the prevailing official exchange rate, at the date of processing.
For the avoidance of doubt, the official exchange rate refers to the RBZ [Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe] auction rate.

Waverley Blankets’ Managing Director reportedly applied to NEC seeking exemption from paying the wages agreed during arbitration which the Council declined. NEC wrote back:
<blockquote>
It should be noted that your application for exemption was considered and declined.
In other words, it was turned down or rejected and, therefore, there is no pending application for exemption before the NEC.
In the circumstance, the status quo of the arbitral award is still in force until it is set aside by a competent court.

Waverley Blankets employees have vowed to continue striking until the company complies with the arbitration outcome.
Workers in both the private and public sectors are clamouring for United States dollar salaries as most goods and services including fuel are being sold exclusively in foreign currency.

Waverley Blankets Workers Down Tools Over Low Salaries

Public prosecutors across the country are planning to go on strike starting on 20 April to push their employer, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), to restore their 2018 salaries.
According to <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/prosecutors-demand-us900-salary-ahead-of-planned-strike-npa-threatens-dismissal/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>, the pay entry level for a junior prosecutor in 2018 was US$899.
Currently, junior prosecutors earn ZW$100 000, which is equivalent to US$100, plus an additional U$200 government allowance.
Prosecutors are accusing the NPA of neglecting the welfare of low-ranking staffers while senior law officers in the grade of chief or provincial public prosecutors have numerous benefits.
Chief or provincial public prosecutors reportedly earn in the range of ZWL$2 million and ZWL$3 million.
They get fuel coupons for their allocated double cab vehicles, Isuzus, Toyota Fortuners, or Ford Everest.
The Prosecutors’ Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) notified their employer of their intention to strike in a letter dated 5 April 2023.
PAZ demanded that the NPA urgently address concerns or face a nationwide strike starting on 20 April. Wrote PAZ:

This serves as formal notice to engage in collective job action in terms of section 104 of the Labour Act.
This is also based on a poll that has been endorsed by members who cast votes.
We also take cognisance of the fact that we do not fall under any of the exceptions which ban employees from engaging in collective job action.
We appreciate that the grounds for giving such notice must be matters of a dispute of interest as required by law.
</blockquote>
The issues prosecutors want to be addressed include salary review based on 2018 rates, payment of responsibility and retention allowances for public prosecutors who head stations, and promotions of deserving individuals. Said PAZ:
<blockquote>
Hence our position is that if the above issues are not attended to within 14 days as required by the law, public prosecutors will engage in collective job action on the 20th of April 2023.
</blockquote>
However, NPA Acting Secretary Tafadzwa Mupariwa, representing Acting Prosecutor-General Nelson Mutsonziwa, warned the prosecutors of unspecified action if the strike goes ahead. He said:
<blockquote>
The Authority notes that the notice is fatally defective at law and therefore a nullity. The PAZ has been advised.
In light of the defects in the notice for industrial action, be advised that any industrial action based on that defective notice is unlawful.

Mupariwa said the NPA was working on improving the conditions of service and the general welfare of staffers. He said:
<blockquote>
These include the provision of station vehicles, whose pilot project has seen the distribution of 19 brand-new Isuzu single-cab vehicles.
The next stage is now the provision of vehicles and conditions of service for prosecutors in charge of stations.
This is a phased approach and we hope to equip all the stations progressively.

The NPA said engagements with Treasury were ongoing with a view to a 100% salary increment effective 01 April 2023.
It said talks with local councils would see prosecutors allocated housing stands.
Sector-specific allowances were also being tabled for adoption, the NPA said.

Prosecutors Plan Nationwide Strike, Demand US$900 Salary

The recently signed Health Service Amendment Act will worsen the exodus of health workers and put more pressure on those who remain on their jobs, a health expert has said.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200006007/fears-over-health-service-act-amendments">NewsDay</a> on Tuesday, Community Working Group on Health executive director Itai Rusike said:
<blockquote>
It is unfortunate that health workers are caught in the middle of a system that is slow to respond to their needs and ethical pressures not to take collective job action.
The unpopular Health Services Act will most likely exacerbate the exodus of health workers from the country thereby putting extra pressure on those who will remain on their jobs.
</blockquote>
Rusike urged the government to address the conditions of service for health workers to plug the brain drain.
Under the Act, government health workers cannot go on strike for more than 3 continuous days within a two-a-week period.
During a strike, they should continue to provide Emergency Services
The Act also says incitement to job action against set conditions can lead to criminal prosecution.

"Health Service Amendment Act Will Worsen Exodus Of Health Workers"

President Emmerson Mnangagwa last week signed into law the Health Services Amendment Bill which among other things, makes it illegal for government health workers to embark on industrial action lasting more than three days.
The Health Service Amendment Act stipulates that during job action, government health workers must continue to provide emergency services.
Under the Act, the old Health Services Board (HSB) was upgraded to a full commission, that is, the Health Services Commission (HSC) which set health workers’ conditions of service.
Health workers are now independent of the Public Services Commission (PSC), just like the judiciary, defence forces and police.
The restrictions on the health workers’ right to strike are contained in Section 16A of the new Act which says health services shall be deemed an essential service as defined in the Constitution. It reads:

Notwithstanding anything in the Labour Act, the Health Service shall be deemed as an essential service referred to in section 65(3) of the Constitution.
No collective job action, whether lawful or unlawful, shall continue for an uninterrupted period of 72 hours or for more than 72 hours in any given 14-day period and notice of any collective job action must be given in writing 48 hours prior to the commencement of such collective job action.
</blockquote>
The Act says anyone inciting or organising collective job action in defiance of the new conditions can be tried for a criminal offence and if found guilty fined up to level four or jailed for six months.

Govt Outlaws Prolonged Strikes By Health Workers

The University of Zimbabwe (UZ), has denied reports that its workers are on strike, saying the misinformation is being peddled on social media platforms by a few misguided employees.
In a statement, UZ stated that its workers are not on strike and it is business as usual as the country’s most prestigious learning institution. Read the statement:

The University of Zimbabwe wishes to advise its Staff, Students, Stakeholders and the general public that its employees have not downed tools, contrary to information circulating on social media.
The University Executive and Works Council strongly condemns the actions of a few misguided employees for circulating misinformation purporting that the University employees were on strike.
The University of Zimbabwe, therefore, wishes to assure all its stakeholders that normal business is going on as usual.

University of Zimbabwe Dismisses Employees' Strike Reports

At least 100 workers from the Wattle company protested by walking 40km from the company’s estate in Vumba to its headquarters in Mutare to demonstrate against the non-payment of salaries. The workers alleged that they were last paid in 2014 and are reportedly owed about $350 000. Four of the workers’ representatives have been reportedly fired over this issue.
One of the workers who spoke to NewsDay said:
<blockquote>Currently, we don’t have a workers’ committee because it was fired after leading a march from Vumba and it’s very unfortunate, four were fired.
We are owed our salaries since 2014, and this affects 150 workers, both contract and permanent workers. They initially gave us $70 each and later $50, but we have resolved to continue with the strike until we have received full payment.</blockquote>
The company disputed this saying:
<blockquote>It is not true that they walked all the way from Vumba, but they used public transport, which dropped them off by the gate. Since they have taken the arrears dispute to the court, we are now waiting for the courts to finalise the matter.</blockquote>

Wattle Company workers walk 40km, to protest against non-payment of salaries since 2014

Today marked the third day of the doctor’s strike which started on Wednesday the 15th of February, 2017.  The strike seems to have intensified as senior doctors from the department of obstetrics and gynaecology also joined the strike, say they would only resume their duties after the return of junior doctors due to the overwhelming nature of their work.  The paediatrician ward at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals has also been closed until the strike is over.
The Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association has said that doctors will be continuing with their strike until they have proof that the 250 posts which the government has claimed to have created actually exist.  They also said that they are not returning to work until the government keeps its word, and honours a 2014 promise to increase their on-call allowances to $720 per month. The doctors a;lso want the government to provvide them with a facility to import vehicles into the country.

The membership expressed deep concern about lack of documentary evidence of the created posts including treasury concurrence. The membership notes that a document has been shown to some members but no copy has been availed to the association for filing.</li>
<li> The membership made it explicitly clear that the other two issues have to be given the same PriOritY with creation of posts. 3. The membership resolved that they will not resume their normal duties until the government honors its 2014 agreement of increasing the on call allowance to $720 per month and availing of a vehicle duty-free facility</li>
