A Harare man was on Saturday whisked away by state security agents after he tried to confront President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Epworth.
According to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/thestandard/news/article/200010574/harare-man-breaches-ed-security">The Standard</a>, the incident occurred as Mnangagwa was delivering a speech at the launch of the Presidential Title Deeds and Settlement Regularisation Programme in the dormitory settlement.
As the President was delivering his speech, a young man raced to the stage to confront Mnangagwa but was stopped by State security agents a few metres away.
He was then taken behind a VVIP tent where he was beaten up.
At the event, Mnangagwa handed over 265 title deeds to residents and promised them that more were coming. He said:

The regularisation of this settlement is a mammoth development project which must be collective in nature.
Every individual and household effort, skills and contribution counts. Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo/Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo’.
Let us remain focused, united and determined to see the success of this project.
We must transform Epworth and other human settlements while ensuring that benefiting households enjoy the real value of their properties and environments.
</blockquote>
The Government says the 11 200 title deeds that are ready for Epworth residents are part of the targeted 38 000 for the sprawling suburb.
Thousands of ZANU PF supporters were bussed to the venue from various parts of Harare to attend the event.

Harare Man Breaches Mnangagwa Security At Epworth Event

Chitungwiza North MP, Godfrey Sithole (CCC), says suspected state security agents have been trailing him in an effort to intimidate him.
Sithole told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/thestandard/news/article/200007352/mp-hounded-by-stalkers">The Standard</a> that he has been receiving strange visitors at his home “on a daily basis”. He said:

I have noticed that there are people who are monitoring and following me just like a hawk does its prey.
We have been receiving strange visitors at my residential place purporting to be lost and some asking funny questions, on a daily basis.
It is not a coincidence, they are being sent.
I have also noticed that cars without registration numbers are following me and others are parking nearby.
In this country, we have a situation whereby security agents and government institutions declare that they only take orders from seniors, not recognising the law, and trashing their constitutional duties.
Professionalism and respect were lost due to crass political opportunism.

Sithole was arrested in June 2022 alongside Zengeza West MP Job Sikhala (MDC Alliance) after political violence rocked Nyatsime following the murder of Moreblessing Ali, a CCC activist.
The two legislators were detained alongside 14 other Nyatsime residents charged with inciting public violence.
Sithole and the Nyatsime 14 were granted bail in November but Sikhala remains in pre-trial detention.

Zimbabwe Human Right Commission (ZHRC) has urged the government to stop using state security agencies to instil fear in the citizenry ahead of the 31 July demonstrations.
The matter came to light in a statement which was released by the commission which also urged the state security agents to desist from measures such as torturing the citizens:

<div>In light of the impending protests scheduled for 31 July 2020, ZHRC urges all citizens of Zimbabwe to … take into consideration constitutional rights limiting provisions as well as the Covid-19 regulations which have been in place for the prevention and containment of the pandemic. In exercising the right to demonstrate and petition, interests of public safety, public order and public health should be taken into account and be allowed to take precedence.</div>

<div>The State, through its apparatus, should desist from inflicting constitutionally proscribed measures such as torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment on dissenting political voices.</div>

ZHRC Implores The Government To Stop Using State Apparatus To Instil Fear In Citizens

NewZimbabwe.com reports that MDC deputy chair Tendai Biti’s book has been seized by state security again.
Although details are still sketchy, a source close to Tendai Biti has said that the books meant for the Zimbabwean and Malawian market were taken this morning, a few minutes before the official launch.
A consignment of 18 books sent by the book’s publishers according to Biti was seized by State security agents in January.
The book, Democracy Works was authored by Biti, former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, Gregg Mills and Jeffrey Herbst.
