A Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) officer is feared dead after being dragged into the deep waters of the Munyati River by a crocodile on December 30, 2024.
Sergeant Invin’ca Gamunya, 34, was helping three women cross the flooded river when he was attacked by the crocodile.
He had successfully helped the women to the other side and was swimming back when the incident occurred.
The incident happened in the Saltana Ranch area near Kwekwe. Gamunya was deployed at the Kavinga military base and was attached to the 53 Infantry Battalion in Battlefields.
A search operation involving police divers, the army, and the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) is ongoing, but Gamunya’s body has not yet been recovered.
According to a memo from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) seen by <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/soldier-missing-after-crocodile-attack-in-flooded-kwekwe-river/">ZimLive</a>, the women initially asked another officer, Sergeant Innocent Chikuturudzi, for help, but he declined.
Gamunya, who overheard the conversation, offered to assist the women without seeking approval from his superiors.
When Chikuturudzi realised Gamunya was gone, he sent Private Emmanuel Usaiwevhu to summon him back to base, but it was too late. Reads the memo:

When Usaiwevhu got to the river, he saw Gamunya on the other side of the river with the women already gone. He signalled him to return to the base.
Gamunya got into the river intending to cross and when he was about seven meters in the water he screamed for help.
Usaiwevhu quickly noticed that he was being whisked away into the deep waters by a crocodile. He tried to assist by throwing stones in a bid to scare away the reptile but all was in vain.

Usaiwevhu reported to the police that the crocodile dragged Gamunya for approximately 50 meters before submerging.
Police divers have been searching the river for both Gamunya’s body and the crocodile, but their efforts have so far been unsuccessful.

A Major in the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) appeared before the Harare Magistrates Court on Tuesday, facing allegations of raping his biological daughter.
As reported by <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200032456/army-major-in-court-for-raping-daughter">NewsDay</a>, the case was presided over by Magistrate Stanford Mambanje. The accused has been remanded in custody until September 23 and has been advised to seek bail at the High Court.
Mercy Masamvi, representing the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), opposed bail, arguing that the accused is a powerful army officer who allegedly abused his position to sexually assault a minor.
Masamvi further argued that the seriousness of the charges warranted denying bail.
The allegations state that on Sunday while sharing a bed with his daughter, the accused suddenly pinned her down and raped her.
The complainant managed to escape and conveyed her ordeal to her sister, who was in the adjacent room.
The incident was reported to the ZRP in Epworth, leading to the arrest of the accused.

A Zimbabwean Army Major is accused of raping his own daughter. The case is being heard in court, and the Major is in custody until September 23. The prosecutor thinks he should not be allowed bail because he is a powerful army officer who took advantage of a young girl. The Major allegedly attacked his daughter while they were sharing a bed, but she managed to escape and tell her sister. The police arrested the Major after the incident was reported. It is a very serious situation, and the Major will have to wait until September to see if he can get bail.

Zimbabwean Army Major Allegedly Rapes Biological Daughter

A Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) captain Foster Nyasha, who allegedly robbed Chinese national Yao Jingjie of US$60 000, was denied bail by Mutare magistrate Tendai Mahwe, reported <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200024215/army-captain-remanded-in-custody">NewsDay</a>.
Foster, who is facing a robbery charge, was advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
His co-accused, who are all police officers, Albert Machona (42), a sergeant, and constables Charles Musiiwa (33) and Tanyaradzwa Mhondiwa (30) were each granted US$150 bail.
Machona, Musiiwa and Mhondiwa are stationed at Mutare Central Police Station while Nyasha is attached to 3 Infantry Battalion headquarters in the same town.
Allegations are that on 28 February, at around 7 PM, Yao arrived home by taxi from a business trip in Harare.
She was accompanied by her driver Kalim Mukwamba who left with the taxi as the Chinese national was entering her home in Morningside.
But before she could enter her house, Yao saw an intruder who turned out to be Foster wearing a black mask.
He allegedly assaulted Yao, fracturing her hands before robbing her of a satchel containing the cash.
Yao’s screams attracted neighbours who pursued Foster and recovered the bag which they handed to the three police officers — Machona, Musiiwa and Mhondiwa.
The cops allegedly took Foster to the Police Station where they connived to steal part of the recovered cash.
They then booked Foster as an informant and not as a suspect before allegedly releasing him.
The three police officers allegedly went to Ireland Private Hospital where the complainant who had been robbed was admitted and misrepresented to her that US$26 000 was all the cash that had been recovered.
However, the complainant raised the alarm leading to the arrest of the accused persons.
Foster was re-arrested on robbery charges.

Army Captain Accused Of Robbing Chinese National Of US$60 000 Denied Bail

A Zimbabwe National Army officer, Arnold Nyoni (29), allegedly robbed a pedestrian of US$90 earlier this month.
Nyoni appeared at the Plumtree Magistrates Court on Wednesday facing robbery charges.
Plumtree magistrate, Joshua Nembaware, granted Nyoni ZWL$50 000 bail and remanded the matter to tomorrow for trial continuation.
Prosecuting, Arnold Mudekunye said that on 04 August 2023, at around 4 AM, Nyoni accosted Alphonse Nkomo (35) who was walking along a footpath.
Nkomo tried to resist but was overpowered and robbed of his wallet containing US$90.
When Nkomo sought to find out the identity of his attacker, he was told that the robber was a soldier at the 1.3 infantry battalion, Plumtree.
He then went to the army base where he identified the suspect.
Nkomo filed a police report, leading to Nyoni’s arrest.

Soldier Robs Pedestrian Of US$90

A 24-year-old man who was shot outside the Russian embassy in Harare on Wednesday night is a Zimbabwean soldier, reported <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/2022/10/russia-embassy-shooting-victim-a-soldier-who-wanted-ak47-to-fight-touts/">ZimLive</a>.
National police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi on Thursday said the suspect was shot and injured and was admitted to a local hospital.
ZimLive reported diplomatic sources as saying the man was shot twice on his thigh and armpit after attempting to wrestle an AK47 rifle from a police officer guarding the embassy.
The soldier was reportedly involved in a physical confrontation with touts at a taxi rank for Bindura-bound buses on Sam Nujoma Street (formerly Second Street). Added the source:

In his anger, he walked to the Russian embassy where there was a police officer on guard duties.
He demanded the gun from the officer who resisted and it appears they wrestled over the weapon until the soldier was shot.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is ruling out a robbery or political motive.
In his statement issued earlier on Thursday, Assistant Commissioner Nyathi did not disclose the suspect’s name.

Russia Embassy Shooting Victim A Soldier Who Wanted Gun To Fight Touts | Report

A soldier based in Beitbridge narrowly cheated death after he was shot eight times by vehicle smugglers along the Limpopo River last week.
The soldier was part of a security team deployed to curb cross-border crime in the border town.
The smugglers opened fire after they were cornered at an undesignated crossing point along the Limpopo River.
ZRP Officer Commanding Beitbridge District Chief Superintendent Tichaona Nyongo confirmed the incident but referred further questions to the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA). He said:

He was on deployment and no one else was injured. As the norm, you can get detailed facts from the army through their national spokesperson.
</blockquote>
ZNA spokesperson Alphios Makotore said he would issue a statement next week.

Soldier, Crispen Nyabeze, is suing South Medical Chitungwiza Hospital for $44 000 for negligence after the medical institution improperly inserted a catheter into his manhood causing serious injury that has seen the victim now failing to be intimate with his wife. He has since filed papers at the High Court demanding compensation from the hospital.
In the High Court papers filed on April 21 2016, Nyabeze cites Lincoln Savanhu (a nurse) and South Medical Chitungwiza Hospital as first and second respondents, respectively. Nyabeze is employed by the Zimbabwe National Army as an engineer.
Part of the court papers read,
<blockquote>On the 28th day of July 2014, while attending to the plaintiff who was admitted at South Medical Chitungwiza, the first defendant (Savanhu) improperly and negligently inserted a catheter into the plaintiff’s penis and thereby causing injury in the plaintiff’s bulbar urethra. The injury to the plaintiff’s urethra caused some tight strictures. As a result, plaintiff is no longer able to urinate using his penis and a tube had to be inserted into him to pass urine which position caused a lot of pain and discomfort. Plaintiff is no longer able to have sexual intercourse with his wife anymore. He is also incapable of fathering any child through the natural reproductive process, a position which has affected plaintiff’s marriage and social well-being.</blockquote>
Through his lawyers, Dondo and Partners, Nyabeze says he needs to undergo corrective surgery at a cost of about $10,000. In a letter to Nyabeze’s lawyers, the hospital’s legal counsel Wintertons Legal Attorneys, pledged to investigate the matter.
