<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Nelson_Chamisa">Nelson Chamisa</a>, the leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), Zimbabwe’s biggest opposition party, denied claims that he was <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Simon_Rudland">Simon Rudland</a>‘s lawyer in 2016. This comes after an Al Jazeera documentary called “Gold Mafia” implicated Rudland in gold smuggling and money laundering activities.
Recently, presidential spokesperson <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/George_Charamba">George Charamba</a> claimed that Chamisa was one of Rudland’s lawyers, which led to speculation that Chamisa’s silence on the “Gold Mafia” documentary was due to his alleged association with Rudland.
However, Chamisa denied the claim in an interview with a local publication and argued that his critics were directing their anger at the wrong target. Chamisa said:

I am not Emmerson (Mnangagwa). I am Nelson; Mnangagwa is the one who is presiding over this nation and therefore fingers have to point at him because he has the responsibility and the accountability.
He (Mnangagwa) is the one who presides over the Reserve Bank, he is the one who has been entrusted, of course illegitimately, with the stewardship of our national resources, the silverware of the family.
I’m there as the alternative and what has been proven by this Al Jazeera report is what we have always known, that indeed the problem is corruption.

Chamisa stated that he has no relationship with any of the people involved in the scandal and denied representing Rudland. He also criticised the presidential spokesperson for not understanding how lawyers, particularly advocates, function. He said:

In any event, I was not the one who was responsible in that matter; that was an advocate Thabani Mpofu matter and as far as I know advocate Mpofu is one of the finest advocates in the country.
And he acts for his clients, and I am not accountable for that. I did my privileges in advocacy chambers.
So, I would work with advocate Mpofu not as the plea or principal advocate but assisting under the privilege, so it was in the context that we acted in the matter not as my client.

The “Gold Mafia” scandal has gained global attention and was discussed in the British House of Lords. The documentary implicates Zimbabwe ambassador at large and preacher <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Uebert_Angel">Uebert Angel</a>, Zimbabwe Miners Federation boss <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Henrietta_Rushwaya">Henrietta Rushwaya</a>, the first family, gold dealer Ewan MacMillan, and business tycoon Simon Rudland.

Chamisa Speaks On Claims That He's Simon Rudland's Lawyer

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Simon_Rudland">Simon Rudland,</a> the co-owner of Gold Leaf Tobacco Zimbabwe, has dismissed the Al Jazeera documentary called “<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gold_Smuggling_in_Zimbabwe">Gold Mafia</a>” as sensationalized and extreme. He argues that the documentary only presents selective snippets of wild and broad claims without proper context or evidence to support them. In a short video posted on social media platforms this Friday, Rudland said:

This is done to traumatise and sensationalise for maximum exposure. Any investigation into this documentary is welcomed and will reveal the extent of the fabrication of the information portrayed by Al Jazeera.

Rudland was responding to reports by <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/3/23/gold-smuggler-pattni-kenya-zimbabwe">Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit (I-Unit)</a> Rudland is the one assisting broke the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Reserve_Bank_of_Zimbabwe">Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)</a> with <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/rbz-doesnt-have-money-to-buy-gold-rudland-buys-on-its-behalf-al-jazeera/">money to buy gold from miners.</a>
In the first episode of “Gold Mafia,” Al Jazeera claims that Simon Rudland is connected to Zimbabwe’s ruling party, ZANU PF and has a unique agreement with the government that allows him to transport gold to Dubai and bring back cash to Zimbabwe. According to Simon Nango, a South African Airways customer service agent, Rudland’s bags are not searched and he uses Fly Emirates. 
The documentary claims that due to sanctions on Zimbabwe, importing cash is difficult, and gold is an effective way to bypass those restrictions. Simon Rudland is accused of helping the government evade these sanctions by lending them money from his company, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gold_Leaf_Tobacco_Zimbabwe">Gold Leaf Tobacco Zimbabwe</a>, to buy gold from miners. Rudland then provides an advance payment to Fidelity Printers and Refiners, a subsidiary of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, which is the sole buyer, refiner, and exporter of the precious metal. Fidelity buys the gold and gives it to Rudland to export. 
According to former Finance and Economic Development Minister, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tendai_Biti">Tendai Biti</a>, Zimbabwe is losing around US$1 billion annually due to smuggling, and Simon Rudland is at the heart of this operation.

Gold Mafia: Simon Rudland Has Issued A Response

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Reserve_Bank_of_Zimbabwe">Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)</a> has frozen <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Uebert_Angel">Uebert Angel</a>‘s accounts over alleged gold smuggling, money laundering, bribery, and other corrupt activities. Through the Financial Intelligence Unit, RBZ also froze the accounts of Ewan McMillan, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/accountant-reveals-how-kamlesh-pattni-is-duping-zimbabwe-gold-mafia/">Kamlesh Pattni</a> and <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/rbz-doesnt-have-money-to-buy-gold-rudland-buys-on-its-behalf-al-jazeera/">Simon Rudland</a> stating that it is taking a strong stance against money laundering and is tracking activities that could expose further money laundering by the alleged gold Mafia.
The “gold mafia” were reported to banks on March 30, listing all their accounts and assets, including balances, <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/uebert-angel-rudland-accounts-frozen/">The Herald</a> reported citing sources from within the central bank.
Banks were instructed to freeze the accounts and not transfer any funds until investigations are completed by the Financial Intelligence Unit. This directive is effective immediately.
The Al Jazeera documentary – Gold Mafia – captures Uebert Angel offering to use his diplomatic cover to launder large amounts of dirty cash into Zimbabwe, alongside gold smuggling. He repeatedly name-drops the President’s name.
Kenyan-born Kamlesh Pattni is also shown as able to help launder over $100 million. Ewan McMillan and Simon Rudland are portrayed as smugglers, dealing with Fidelity Printers and Refiners to deliver gold bought from small-scale miners to the refinery and then exporting it to Dubai, allegedly providing hard currency for Zimbabwe and laundering millions of dollars.
Other accounts frozen:
The Financial Intelligence Unit also directed banks to freeze the assets of Cleopas Chidodo, David Chirozvi, Mehlululi Dube, and Fredrick Kunaka, as seen in an earlier memo.
Chidodo is the Head of Security at the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe, who was captured in Episode 2 of the documentary detailing how he assists gold smugglers in avoiding detection as they transport their contraband to Dubai via Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.
Chirozvi is the Head of Finance at the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s Aurex Jewellery, while Kunaka is the general manager of Fidelity Printers and Refiners. Kunaka allegedly received a monthly kickback of US$30 000 from the gold mafia, while Dube, associated with Golden Beryl Private Limited, was allegedly paid US$3 000 per month by the gold smuggling syndicate. The four have been aiding criminal elements in smuggling gold and abusing their positions.
Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa announced on Monday that the Zimbabwean government was acting on the allegations raised in the Al Jazeera documentary. She said the government had directed relevant organs to investigate the issues raised. The minister emphasized that boastful behaviour and name-dropping by some personalities featured in the documentary should never be taken as an enunciation of government policy.
Meanwhile, some are sceptical that the accounts have been frozen. They believe the announcement is meant to hoodwink the public into believing that action was being taken against the “gold mafia.”

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been named in the Al Jazeera documentary as one of the Zimbabwean authorities enabling the gold smuggling operations by offering protection to “the Gold Mafia.”
Episode 2 of Gold Mafia, Al Jazeera’s documentary on corruption and money laundering in Zimbabwe which was released this Thursday reports that smugglers use South African banks to launder money.

Al Jazeera Ep2: President Mnangagwa Implicated In Gold Smuggling Operations

Zimbabwean businessman, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Simon_Rudland">Simon Rudland</a>, has demanded a public apology from Al Jazeera Investigations after he was named as part of the “gold mafia” and the biggest funder of smuggling activities in Zimbabwe in a documentary that premiered recently.
During an undercover investigation by Al Jazeera journalists, self-confessed gold smuggler Ewan Macmillan alleged that Rudland was the major financier of the gold smuggling in Zimbabwe and was owed about US$200 million by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ).
Episode One of the Al Jazeera documentary titled “The Laundry Service”, alleges that Rudland launders money through both Zimbabwean and South African companies.
MacMillan, a self-confessed gold smuggler who was exposed by undercover Al Jazeera journalists, said:

He (Simon Rudland) bankrolls this whole country. If he wants, he phones up the governor, the reserve bank governor. ‘Hi, I want a meeting. Okay, fine. What time?’ ‘I am coming at 11. Okay, fine.’
He is massive. He is one mother***, my friend. You have no idea, how big he is.

Rudland, who is the owner of Gold Leaf Tobacco, also indicated he will be suing Al Jazeera over the broadcast. Reads his statement:
<blockquote>
I deny all allegations made against me concerning gold smuggling, money laundering, or collusion with any government.
The allegations are false and are made without any proof and the documentary is extremely sensational, this propaganda is injurious to my good name.
I urge Al Jazeera to retract their statements and issue a public apology.
Notwithstanding this, I will in any event be instituting legal action against the media house for severe reputational harm caused.

The four-part Al Jazeera documentary titled “Gold Mafia”, also implicated President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Special Envoy Uebert Angel, the President’s niece Henrietta Rushwaya, and Kamlesh Pattni in alleged gold smuggling and money laundering activities in Zimbabwe.

Gold Mafia: Simon Rudland Demands Public Apology From Al Jazeera

<a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/3/23/gold-smuggler-pattni-kenya-zimbabwe">Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit (I-Unit)</a> has reported that the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) is broke and relies on individuals like <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Simon_Rudland">Simon Rudland</a> for money to buy gold.
In episode 01 of its documentary titled Gold Mafia, Al Jazeera says Simon Rudland is connected to ZANU PF ruling elite including the late former Foreign Affairs minister <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Sibusiso_Moyo">Sibusiso Moyo</a>.
Rudland, who survived <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/watch-assassination-attempt-on-zimbabwean-businessman-simon-rudland/">an assassination attempt</a> in South Africa in 2019, has a different deal with the government.
Simon Nango, South African Airways Customer Service Agent, explained that Rudland has a contract to move gold to Dubai and get cash to Zimbabwe.
Rudland’s bags are exempted from search. They use Emirates. He has serious buyers in Dubai, Nango says.
Airport officials will be waiting for Rudland’s several couriers who fly to Dubai with gold and back to Zimbabwe with cash. 
The documentary says due to sanctions on the southern African nation, importing cash is difficult and gold is one of the effective ways of dealing with that problem. Therefore, Rudland helps bust sanctions on behalf of the government. 
According to <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Aljazeera_2023_Zimbabwe_Corruption_Documentary">Ewan Macmillan</a>, another mafia in the Al Jazeera documentary, the Zimbabwean government does not have the money to buy gold from miners. That’s where Rudland comes in. 
Rudland has money from his company, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gold_Leaf_Tobacco_Zimbabwe">Gold Leaf Tobacco</a>. According to Ewan Macmillan, Rudland then lends the government the money to buy gold from miners.
Rudland provides an advance payment to Fidelity Printers and Refiners, a subsidiary of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, which is the sole buyer, refiner and exporter of the precious metal.
Fidelity, a subsidiary of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Reserve_Bank_of_Zimbabwe">Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe</a>, buys the gold and gives it to Rudland to export.
Former Finance and Economic Development Minister, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tendai_Biti">Tendai Biti</a>, says Zimbabwe is losing approximately US$1 billion per year through smuggling and Rudland is at the centre of the operation.

RBZ Doesn't Have Money To Buy Gold, Rudland Buys On Its Behalf - Al Jazeera

There is a video circulating on social media which shows dozens of cigarettes being smuggled into South Africa from Zimbabwe. Although the date of the incident could not be ascertained, we do believe it was after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. 
Massive quantities of cigarettes poured across the Limpopo border from Zimbabwe when South Africa banned the sale of cigarettes to prevent the spread of COVID-19. They became freely available on the black market at a fraction of the cost of more established brands such as Marlboro, manufactured by Philip Morris and it is alleged that the treasury lost billions of Rands in revenue each month. Rudland and his Gold Leaf Tobacco say they could not be held responsible for cigarettes legitimately bought in Zimbabwe and smuggled across the border.
