Two men from Harare have been accused of defrauding student nurses by promising them job placements at a government hospital in exchange for money. Effort Chirandata and Martha Chitumba appeared in court facing fraud charges, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200022347/duo-dupes-student-nurses">NewsDay</a> reported. Chirandata was granted a US$100 bail, while Chitumba was remanded in custody.
<h3>What happened?</h3>
The prosecution alleges that the two suspects deceived the student nurses and collected payments from them. According to State prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi, the duo deceived student nurses who wanted to join Sally Mugabe Central Hospital in January 2023.
Chirandata claimed he knew someone who could help the nurses to get employment quickly. He then directed the nurses to Chitumba, who claimed to have connections to secure employment for them.
The accused asked the student nurses to pay different amounts of money to secure jobs. Then, on January 6, 2024, Chirandata sent a message through a WhatsApp group telling the student nurses to go to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital and collect their employment offer letters from Chitumba.
However, when the complainants went to the hospital on January 8, they couldn’t find Chitumba anywhere. The State papers suggest that Chitumba started avoiding them, which made the student nurses suspicious. As a result, they reported the incident to the police, leading to the arrest of the accused individuals.
This case serves as a reminder to be cautious when dealing with people who promise job opportunities. It is important to verify the legitimacy of such offers and not to make any payments without proper verification. If something seems suspicious or too good to be true, it’s advisable to report it to the authorities to prevent others from falling victim to similar scams.
This case is not an isolated incident, as similar frauds have occurred in the past. Some individuals seeking employment have been scammed into paying for overseas jobs that never materialised. In some cases, people were even sold into slavery after being promised well-paying jobs in countries like Oman and South Africa.

Harare Men Accused Of Defrauding Student Nurses With False Job Promises

Two suspected armed robbers were fatally shot during a shootout with the police in Southlea Park, Harare on Tuesday 17 October 2023. The individuals were identified as Israel Zulu (50) and David Dausi Takawira (43). They succumbed to injuries upon admission to Sally Mugabe Hospital.
The police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, stated that the suspects were involved in multiple armed robbery cases in Harare and Bulawayo between 2019 and October 2022. In a statement seen by Pindula News, Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said one of the incidents involved an attack on a security guard at a business centre in Mount Pleasant, Harare, where they stole US$36,200 and ZWL$28,539. The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a shooting incident involving two armed robbery suspects, Israel Zulu (50) and David Dausi Takawira (43), which occurred on 17th October 2023 at Manyame River, Southlea Park, Harare.
The shooting incident follows the arrest of the suspects in Mutare on 16th October 2023. The suspects revealed to detectives from CID Homicide, Harare that they hid firearms in a bushy area near Manyame River, Southlea Park. Upon arrival at the scene, the suspects tried to escape while taking advantage of the current weather situation, leading to a shoot0ut. Subsequently, the suspects were shot by the detectives and were taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital where they died upon admission.
The suspects and their accomplices are linked to ten armed robbery cases which occurred between 2019 and October 2022 in Harare and Bulawayo, including a case of robbery which occurred on 13th November 2019 at business premises along College Road Mount Pleasant, Harare where a security guard was attacked before US$ 362 00.00 and ZWL$ 28 539.00 cash were stolen.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has made it clear that, those who commit crime will be arrested. Police crack teams are on full alert and will deal decisively with criminal elements linked to armed robbery cases.

Two Suspected Armed Robbers Fatally Shot During Shootout With Zimbabwe Police

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Sally_Mugabe">Sally Mugabe</a> Central Hospital, formerly Harare Hospital, is facing a huge water crisis and sometimes goes for days without tap or even borehole water, according to NewZimbabwe.com.
Patients at the country’s second-largest referral hospital said they sometimes get water from the doctors’ residences. Said one woman whose child is admitted to the institution named after the wife of the late former president Robert Mugabe:

Today (Saturday 25 September 2022) we have water, but we sometimes go for several days without supplies.
I have been around for some time with my child who is admitted here and the situation is not good.
We go for days without water; not even borehole water, and we do not know what the problem is. 
Once in a while we get water from the doctors’ residences.
Patients who are able walk have to go to get themselves water from the doctors’ residence.

Harare Central Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Christopher Pasi, said he was not sure about the situation on the ground since he is currently out of the country. He told <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/crisis-hits-referral-hospital-as-patients-forced-to-bring-own-water/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>:

Anyways, the water challenge has always been there. It’s a perennial issue and sometimes it is not about us but the Harare City Council.

One of the doctors confirmed that patients were often provided buckets to fetch their own water. 
The hospital has been grappling with other various challenges, including the shortage of equipment and medicines.
Healthcare workers have also gone on strike this year, protesting the erosion of their salaries by hyperinflation and the fall in the value of the Zimbabwe dollar.
Challenges in local health institutions have forced hundreds of health caregivers to go abroad in search of better salaries and working conditions.

"Sally Mugabe Central Hospital Sometimes Goes For Days Without Water" - Report

The number of caesarean operations at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital Maternity wing has shot up by 100 per cent following the renovation and re-equipping of theatre 1 by financial services institution, Stanbic Bank last month.
Sally Mugabe Maternity Ward Matron Senior Nursing Officer Dade Gertrude Pedzisai said the Maternity ward was now able to complete all its caesarean section elective list as well as attend to all emergency operations from all over Harare thanks to the inspired donation by Stanbic Bank.
Sister Pedzisai said when the ward was operating with only one theatre, the number of births hovered around 30 per week but they had now shot up to over 60 with every case now being attended to whether emergency or pre-booked. She said:
<blockquote>When we had one theatre operating we had a challenge completing our caesarian section elective list and if there was an emergency referred from anywhere we would attend to it first and push the elective list to later and this was a drain on our emotions because we would have to postpone procedures that needed to be done.
Now with two theatres functional we are working 24/7 and are able to complete our elective lists from morning until around 4 pm then attend to emergencies.</blockquote>
She said while the numbers of births had shot up, the most significant aspect of having two functional theatres was that all caesarean operations were now being attended without having to turn down others or even cancelling them due to having one theatre.
Sister Pedzisai said Antenatal Care (ANC) consultation clinics are now being held daily due to the fact that two theatres are operating with all five doctors now coming from Monday to Friday as per their schedule unlike previously when two or fewer consultations were held per week. She added:
<blockquote>The re-quipping of theatre one by Stanbic Bank has definitely led to a big reduction in the loss of life and the number of patients is also growing and we get satisfaction in providing care for women in Harare with high-risk pregnancies with the help of the best surgical facilities we can for the women who require our care. This donation has helped improve the patient pathway and experience.</blockquote>
Stanbic Bank Head of Brand and Marketing Palmer Mugavha said it was pleasing to hear that the institution had made a significant contribution that helped bring and preserve life.
Mugavha said when Stanbic Bank crafted USIZO-RUYAMURO, it sought to achieve sustainable and tangible results as were being experienced at the maternity ward in mind.
