Brazen armed robbers targeted a cash-in-transit vehicle belonging to Safeguard Security in Bulawayo on Thursday afternoon, making off with US$4 million in cash.
The Safeguard security van was conducting routine duties at the Parkade Centre branch of Ecobank when the robbery occurred.
Videos circulating on social media show that the robbers used a white Ford Ranger with the registration number AGP 2333.
Members of the public captured part of the heist, showing six masked suspects loading what appeared to be cash boxes into their getaway vehicle at the corner of 9th Avenue and Fife Street.
An eyewitness told the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/licence-plate-of-getaway-vehicle-in-bulawayo-4million-heist-captured-on-camera/">Chronicle</a> that the suspects suddenly appeared, fired a single shot in the air, and ordered the security guards to lie down. Said the eyewitness:

As the safeguard workers were trying to get safes From the bank a Ford Ranger open truck appeared with six men wearing face masks.
All of a sudden they shot into the sky once and the safeguard workers all lay on the ground.
The robbers dragged the safes into their vehicle and sped off along George Silundika Street. They had pistols.

An Ecobank worker said that the money was being taken to Harare by Safeguard security. Added the employee:
<blockquote>
The robbers took the money from the security guards’ hands outside the bank when they were about to load it into the car.

Armed robberies involving large sums of cash are not uncommon in Zimbabwe, with some of the robberies a result of insiders sharing information about the movements and storage of cash by security companies.
Police have expressed concern over this trend, as robberies involving insiders are often more successful and can result in larger sums of money being stolen. 
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi has urged companies to improve their security measures and avoid keeping large amounts of cash on their premises.
Robberies involving insiders have occurred across various sectors in Zimbabwe, including businesses, schools, and cash-in-transit vehicles.
Police investigations have often led to the arrest of employees or individuals closely associated with the targeted companies.

Safeguard Security Cash-in-Transit Vehicle Robbed Of US$4 Million In Bulawayo

The security company, Safeguard whose cash-in-transit vehicle was involved in a fatal accident near Lupane has thanked Mr. Mlondolozi Mpofu who retrieved US$100 000 and three pistols from the accident scene and handed them to the company.
Mpofu who was driving to Hwange was the first person at the scene on Wednesday last week and not on Saturday as earlier reported. He retrieved the money and three pistols and rushed one of the injured guards to hospital.
He handed over the firearms to the police and the money to the security company’s officials. Resultantly, Safeguard Security Bulawayo managing director, Mr. Warren King, thanked Mr. Mpofu for the assistance he rendered. In a statement, King said:
<blockquote> We would like to thank Mr. Mlondolozi Mpofu, who witnessed the accident, for assisting our crew while the ambulance and a Safeguard relief vehicle were on their way. Mr Mpofu kindly transported one of the crew members to St Luke’s Hospital in Lupane where he was treated and discharged. The other crew member was taken by ambulance, together with the body of the deceased crew member, to the United Bulawayo Hospitals where he too was treated and discharged.</blockquote>
King also said that Safeguard management and staff convey their deepest condolences to the family of the crewman who passed away. He also revealed that the crew commander and driver of the Safeguard truck that was involved in the accident suffered only minor injuries.

Man Who Retrieved US$100 000 & 3 Pistols From Accident Scene Has Been Thanked

A security company, Safeguard, has managed to recover its US$100 000 and three pistols from an accident after an eye witness retrieved and returned them to the company. The money and guns were retrieved from the accident scene by one Mr. Mlondolozi Mpofu.
The Chronicle reports that a Safeguard cash-in-transit vehicle had been involved in a fatal accident near Lupane on its way from Victoria Falls to Bulawayo. One of the guards died on the spot while two others were seriously injured.
Mpofu who witnessed the accident is said to have helped the injured, retrieved the money and guns before calling the police and the security company. He said:
<blockquote> I was on my way to Hwange after the Lupane 80 sign post when l witnessed the accident. The driver was trying to avoid cattle and he lost control. He swerved left and right. I went there to save lives because l could see that the other security officer was trapped in the car while the other one was thrown out of the vehicle.</blockquote>
After he helped the trapped officer, that’s when he saw the cash box which he decided to take and keep safe together with three pistols that were scattered in the bush. Mpofu is reported to have also called the police whom he gave only the pistols. Mpofu said that he did not hand over the money to avoid the money changing many hands. He then personally handed it over to the security company.
