Police have confirmed a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on Wednesday around 2 PM at the 5-kilometre peg along the Wedza-Mutiweshiri Road.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi on Thursday said that seven people lost their lives and nine others were injured when a Toyota Quantum carrying 15 passengers veered off the road and overturned before landing back on its wheels.
Five passengers died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries after being admitted to St Mary’s Hospital in Wedza. The deceased have been identified by their next of kin as follows:

<li>Evans Marerwa (37) a male adult of Kuwadzana 5, Harare and employed by the Ministry of Home Affairs as a police officer stationed at Police General Headquarters.</li>
<li>Liberty Marerwa (31), a male adult of Kuwadzana 5, Harare</li>
<li>Wirimai Munhuuripi (49), a male adult of Norton</li>
<li>Mendy Marerwa (12), a female juvenile of Kuwadzana 5, Harare</li>
<li>Panashe Marerwa (25), a male adult of Kuwadzana 5, Harare</li>
<li>Yvonne Meki (26), a female adult of Kuwadzana 5, Harare</li>
<li>Ethel Mhena (1), a female infant of 4902 Kuwadzana 5, Harare.</li>
</ul>
Commissioner Nyathi urged motorists to exercise utmost caution and adhere to speed limits to reduce the occurrence of road accidents.

Seven Killed As Toyota Quantum Overturns On Wedza-Mutiweshiri Road

The five pedestrians killed in Bindura on Saturday when a vehicle veered off the road and struck them were young girls from the same extended family.
In a statement posted on the official ZRP X page on Sunday, 29 September, Police confirmed the accident, saying a Nissan Primera, carrying one passenger, veered off the road and struck six pedestrians who were walking along the roadside before overturning and landing on its roof. Police said:

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 28/09/24 at around 1604 hours at the 90-kilometre peg along Harare-Mukumbura Road in which five people were killed.
A Nissan Primeira vehicle with one passenger on board hit six pedestrians who were walking along the road after the vehicle had veered off the road before overturning and landing on its roof.
As a result, three pedestrians died on the spot and two died upon admission at Bindura Hospital. Another pedestrian and a passenger in the Nissan Primeira vehicle were injured and were admitted at Bindura Hospital.

A witness, Mikirina Julius, said the accident happened so fast that she did not realise her young relatives had been killed. She said:

When I crossed the road, I saw the kids and crossed the road when I looked back I heard the car screeching and it had overturned and I got to the scene and I started crying. I didn’t even realise the children who died were my sisters.

Bindura Assistant District Development Coordinator, Llydia Hlabati said the Civil Protection Unit is mobilising assistance for the bereaved family. Said Hlabati:

As CPU Bindura district, we compiled a report which we sent to the head office. We are hoping the children will be buried by the government.
We are deeply touched because all these girls are near the same age and they are coming from one homestead.
They were staying at their uncle’s house, so it’s painful they were all staying at one homestead.

Four of the girls, two aged 14 and two aged 13, died at the scene, while the fifth girl, whose age is unknown, passed away after being admitted to Bindura Hospital.
A sixth child sustained serious head injuries and a fractured right leg and is currently hospitalised at Bindura Hospital.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Tuesday, 17 September, released the names of the victims of two fatal road traffic accidents that occurred in Masvingo and Rusape on 14 September 2024 where seven people were killed.
Police said a Nissan Serena carrying eight occupants veered off the road and overturned after its rear right tyre burst at around 7:25 AM, approximately 60 kilometres along Roy–Chiredzi Road. Four people lost their lives, and four others sustained injuries.
The names of four victims who were killed in the Masvingo accident are:

In the Rusape accident, a Toyota Hilux with two passengers was involved in a head-on collision with another Toyota Hilux carrying eight passengers.
The accident occurred at the 60-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road, resulting in three fatalities and seven injuries.
Two of the three victims who were killed in the Rusape accident were identified by their next of kin as follows:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has urged motorists to exercise caution and refrain from overtaking when it is unsafe, following two tragic road traffic accidents that claimed seven lives in Masvingo and Rusape on Saturday, September 14.
In a statement issued on Sunday, September 15, ZRP Chief Staff Officer for Press and Public Relations, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the incidents.
In one accident, a Nissan Serena carrying eight occupants veered off the road and overturned after its rear right tyre burst at around 7:25 AM, approximately 60 kilometres along Roy–Chiredzi Road. Four people lost their lives, and four others sustained injuries.
In the second incident, a Toyota Hilux with two passengers was involved in a head-on collision with another Toyota Hilux carrying eight passengers.
Commissioner Nyathi said the second accident occurred at the 60-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road, resulting in three fatalities and seven injuries. Reads the statement:

Two Killed In Toyota Wish Accident On Harare-Bulawayo Road

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on 28 July at around 1.30 PM along the Mutare-Masvingo Road at the 134-kilometre peg.
Police said a Mitsubishi Colt vehicle was travelling along the road when its front right tyre suddenly burst, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
The Mitsubishi Colt then veered off the road and overturned multiple times before eventually landing back on its wheels.
The accident resulted in the tragic deaths of three people who were travelling in the Mitsubishi Colt.
Nine other occupants of the vehicle sustained various injuries and were rushed to the nearby Birchenough Bridge Hospital for medical treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were also transported to the hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
In a separate incident on the same day, at around 5:45 AM, a head-on collision occurred along Willowvale Road, opposite the Old Willowvale Flats in Harare.
A Toyota Hiace Kombi, which was carrying several passengers, collided head-on with a Honda Fit vehicle.
The impact of the collision resulted in the death of one individual, while 13 others suffered injuries of varying severity.

3 Killed, 9 Injured As Overloaded Mitsubishi Colt Vehicle Overturns

Police have confirmed a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on the Masvingo-Mbalabala Road, at the 103-kilometre peg, on July 25, 2024, at around 7 AM.
Police said two pedestrians were killed, and two others were injured when a Nissan NP200 vehicle, which had no passengers on board, veered off the road and struck the victims who were walking along a footpath approximately 70 metres away from the road.
The bodies of the deceased victims were transported to the Zvishavane District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations, while the injured individuals, as well as the driver of the vehicle, were admitted to the same hospital for medical treatment.
In an unrelated incident, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed a serious road traffic accident which occurred at Bradford Turn-off along Bulawayo Road, Harare on the 20th of July.
12 passengers were injured when a Toyota Hiace Kombi registration number AGB 3305 with 20 passengers on board, veered off the road and landed on its left side.
Police said the injured victims were referred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for treatment.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on July 21, 2024, at around 7:50 PM along the Ngundu-Tanganda Road.
In a statement, the ZRP said the accident occurred at the 70-kilometre peg on the road, where a Toyota Probox vehicle with registration number AFD 7476, carrying nine passengers, veered off the road and rammed into a bridge pillar.
The vehicle overturned several times, throwing all of the passengers out of the vehicle before it landed on its right side.
Tragically, eight of the passengers were killed in the accident, while the remaining two were injured. Police said:

Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Felix Mhona has said that any vehicle involved in an accident after passing through a manned roadblock would result in the accountability of the police officers and/or Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID) officials manning the roadblock.
Mhona made this statement in response to a question from Manicaland Senator Jane Chitsamba, who had inquired about the Ministry’s efforts to address the surge in road carnage.
In recent weeks, dozens of people have been killed in several accidents across the country, with some of the accidents attributed to unroadworthy vehicles. Said Mhona (via <a href="https://cite.org.zw/traffic-cops-to-be-held-liable-for-accidents/">CITE</a>):

It is quite saddening that over 26 precious lives were lost in June alone, with over 56 people injured.
We are taking serious measures in terms of mitigatory actions as a Ministry, but this calls for a holistic approach.
Where we have witnessed recklessness, where we did not preserve the sanctity of life on our roads, where others are driving under the influence of alcohol, and through the enforcement agents, we have said if a vehicle passes through a manned checkpoint and is involved in an accident, the officials are accountable.
Not only that, even the operators of those buses. So we are not only charging the drivers.
</blockquote>
Mhona revealed that in all reported accidents, the vehicles did not have certificates of fitness, indicating they were unfit for the road. He said:

So we cannot continue to watch. We cannot continue to allow such anarchy and lawlessness on our roads. We are tabling a very deterrent Statutory Instrument (SI) to address such malpractices.
We are witnessing 2,000 lives lost per annum in this small country of Zimbabwe. We cannot continue to have such an alarming number.
I want to assure the august House that we will not rest on our laurels as a Ministry, but will continue to appeal to this august House for deterrent measures.

According to the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ), from January to May 2024, the country had a total of 21,183 road crashes, resulting in 860 fatalities and injuring 4,350 people.

The Minister of Transport in Zimbabwe said that if a vehicle gets into an accident after passing through a roadblock, the police officers at the roadblock will be responsible. Police Officers Manning Roadblocks To Be Held Liable For Accidents, Says Minister Of Transport

The driver of a haulage truck, who on June 25, 2024, jumped a stop sign at the intersection of Masvingo-Mbalabala and Tokwe-Mhandamhambwe Roads, resulting in a fatal crash is now facing culpable homicide charges.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/truck-driver-faces-culpable-homicide-charges/">The Herald</a> that investigations were in progress.
According to police, the crash took place on June 25 around 3:30 PM at the 55-kilometre peg on the Masvingo-Mbalalabala Road highway.
A Nissan Note vehicle carrying five passengers collided with a Freightliner truck at the intersection of the Masvingo-Mbalabala Road and the Tokwe-Mhandamhambwe Road.
The truck driver reportedly failed to stop at a stop sign, causing the tragic collision. The ZRP said:

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 55 kilometre along Masvingo-Mbalalabala Road on 25/06/24 at around 1530 hours. Four people were killed whilst two others were injured when a Nissan Note vehicle with five passengers on board rammed into a Freightliner Truck after the truck driver failed to obey a stop sign at the intersection of Masvingo-Mbalabala Road and Tokwe-Mhandamhambwe Road.

Culpable homicide is a legal term that refers to the unlawful killing of a human being. The term “culpable” implies that the act was committed with some degree of fault or negligence, but falls short of constituting murder.
It encompasses different levels of seriousness depending on the circumstances surrounding the act, such as whether it was intentional, reckless, or negligent.
In April 2024, a police officer, Farai Muchandisiye (37), was fined US$200 by the Norton Magistrates Court following his conviction for culpable homicide.
He was facing two charges: (1) culpable homicide, and (2) failing to report an accident to the Police.
Muchandisiye pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to a fine of US$200 or 2 months imprisonment for count 1.
He was sentenced to a further US$100 fine or 1 month imprisonment for count 2.
Culpable homicide is defined by Section 49 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act as the unlawful killing of another person due to negligence or recklessness. The section reads as follows:
<blockquote>
Any person who causes the death of another person –
(a) negligently failing to realise that death may result from his or her conduct; or
(b) realising that death may result from his or her conduct and negligently failing to guard 
against that possibility;
shall be guilty of culpable homicide and liable to imprisonment for life or any shorter period or 
a fine up to or exceeding level fourteen or both.

Haulage Truck Driver Faces Culpable Homicide Charges After Fatal Crash

Four people were killed in a road traffic accident involving two buses and a haulage truck which occurred along Harare-Mutare Road on Thursday afternoon.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said a Tenda bus collided with a haulage truck and a Phils and Pats bus at the 32-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road near Mutangadura. Reads the statement:

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred this afternoon at the 32-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road near Mutangadura in which four people were killed when a Tenda bus collided with a haulage truck and a Phils and Pats bus.
The Tenda bus was on the way to Mutare whilst a Phils and Pats bus was on the way to Harare.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Marondera Provincial Hospital mortuary for post mortem whilst the injured were referred to Marondera Provincial Hospital and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
Police officers are currently at the scene. The total number of passengers in the two buses is yet to be confirmed. More details will be released in due course.

Four People Killed As Tenda Bus Collides With Phils And Pats Bus, And A Haulage Truck

The death toll from Saturday’s road accident in Beitbridge involving two buses has risen to eleven from nine after two passengers died in hospital.
The collision occurred when a City Bus coach, carrying 25 passengers, struck a donkey and veered into the path of a Blue Circle bus with 43 passengers on board, leading to a head-on collision.
Seven passengers died on the spot, and two more succumbed to their injuries upon arrival at Beitbridge District Hospital.
The death toll has now risen to eleven from the initial count of nine, <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/beitbridge-accident-death-toll-rises-to-11/">The Herald</a> has cited Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister, Evelyn Ndlovu, as saying.
Ndlovu visited some of the survivors admitted to United Bulawayo Hospital (UBH) on Monday, 18 March.
Both the Government and bus operators have pledged to assist the victims’ families by covering medical and funeral expenses.
Ndlovu said the Government is processing relevant documents for the repatriation of a South African national who also lost their life in the accident.
Blue Circle operations manager, Nicholas Gowo, assured that they would cover all costs for the families who lost their loved ones and also handle the medical bills of the survivors.
Sam Matanda, operations manager for City Bus, expressed their commitment to assisting in every possible way, acknowledging the sadness of losing lives in the accident and mourning with the affected families.

Beitbridge Bus Collision Death Toll Rises To 11

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released the names of five of the nine victims who tragically lost their lives in a head-on collision near Beitbridge.
ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the incident occurred on Saturday morning when a City bus, carrying 25 passengers, struck a donkey and veered into the path of a Blue Circle bus with 43 passengers on board.
The fatal accident unfolded at the 267-kilometer peg along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road on March 16, 2024, around 1:20 AM.
Police said seven people died instantly, while two others succumbed to their injuries upon admission at Beitbridge District Hospital.
39 individuals were injured, with nine referred to United Bulawayo Hospital, 12 admitted at Beitbridge District Hospital, and 18 treated and discharged.
The victims’ identities are as follows:
1. Taurai Muketiwa: A male adult employed by Blue Circle Bus Company as an assistant driver.
2. Mudarikwa Netsai (40): A female adult from Chegutu.
3. Rangarirai Mbizvo (43): A female adult from Dulibadzimu, Beitbridge.
4. Miriam Majengu: A female adult from Macheke.
5. Clever Chikare: A male adult from Phase 2 Damafalls, Harare.
The other four victims are yet to be identified by their next of kin. Added Assitant Comm Nyathi:

Police Identify Five Of The Nine Victims Of Beitbridge Buses Collision

In a heart-wrenching incident, five passengers lost their lives in a fatal road traffic accident along the Harare-Bulawayo Road.
The collision occurred at the 191-kilometre peg, involving a Homan Sino truck and a Toyota Aqua vehicle. The accident took place around 3 PM on Friday, March 15.

Accident Claims Five Lives On Harare-Bulawayo Road

In the Toronto area of Penhalonga, located on the outskirts of Mutare, a devastating accident unfolded on Tuesday afternoon.
A speeding vehicle, allegedly driven by an intoxicated driver, struck three learners. Tragically, among the victims were the only two children of a local couple.
The incident occurred around 3 PM on Tuesday, March 12, at the 2-kilometer mark along Christmas Pass-Shamu Road.
The siblings, Silvian and Strive Maponde, and another learner, died on the spot.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the accident. Additionally, a fourth victim sustained injuries and was admitted to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital. Fortunately, he was discharged the following day.
In a statement, ZRP national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi identified the deceased as Blessing Chasarira (nine), Silvian Maponde (13) and Strive Maponde (nine), all of Chirochangu Plot, Toronto. He said:

Acting spokesperson for the ZRP in Manicaland Province, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said the driver of the vehicle, John Dumbura, was being charged with culpable homicide.
Silvian Maponde was in Grade Six at Little St Augustine’s Primary School, while his sibling, Strive was in Grade Two at the same school. Chisarira was in Grade Two at Beaule Primary School.
According to witnesses who spoke to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/couple-loses-all-children-in-accident/">The Manica Post</a>, the driver of the vehicle was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and driving at high speed.
It is believed that Dumbura lost control of the speeding vehicle, leading to the tragic outcome.
Gift Maponde, a resident, faced unimaginable grief as his only two children had just disembarked from a kombi and were only a few meters away from their home. He said:

My children, Silvian and Strive were hit by the car and died on the spot. They are gone. They had just disembarked from a kombi on their way home.
Even though I arrived a few moments after the accident, I saw the driver; he was visibly drunk. It happened around 3 pm since I had come from where I am employed as a security guard.
This is so devastating. I cannot believe that I no longer have any children. They were all taken in the blink of an eye.
This is so difficult to comprehend and adapt to. I am in extreme pain, and whoever did this must pay for his sins.
</blockquote>
Primrose Masiiyiwa, who said she witnessed the accident unfolding, said:

I was coming from fetching water and saw these kids checking both sides of the road before crossing.
Everything happened so fast and the next thing I heard was a loud crashing sound. When I rushed to check what had happened.
I realised that the kids had been knocked down by the car and were lying in a bush by the roadside.

Tragedy Strikes: Couple Loses All Children in Alcohol-Related Car Accident

Three schoolchildren died whilst another learner was injured when a Toyota Fortuner vehicle veered off the road to the left and knocked them down in Penhalonga around 3 PM on Tuesday, 12 March.
The boys were on their way home from school.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi on Wednesday said the pupils were crossing the road at the 2-kilometre peg along Christmas Pass-Shamu Road when they were hit.
In a statement, Asst Comm Nyathi said the victims were identified by their next of kin as follows: Blessing Chisaria (09) of Grange, Toronto (Chirochangu Plot); Silvian Maponde (13) of Grange, Toronto (Chirochangu Plot); and Strive Maponde (07) of Grange, Toronto (Chirochangu Plot). He added:

Speeding Toyota Fortuner Ploughs Into Schoolchildren; 3 Killed, 1 Injured

The Zimbabwe Embassy in South Africa has deployed a team to assess the needs and ascertain circumstances around a bus accident that claimed the lives of 13 Zimbabweans in the Western Cape Province on Saturday evening.
A Simlex Bus Company coach collided with a commercial truck that was going in the opposite direction, 140km before Cape Town along the Hex River Pass.
The bus was travelling from Harare to Cape Town. The stretch of road on which the accident occurred has sharp curves.
Reports suggest that the driver jumped out of the bus during the collision, but unfortunately, he died as well.
Zimbabwe’s Consular General in Cape Town, Esther Mudambo said the 13 people who perished in the accident were yet to be identified. She said (<a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/western-cape-bus-tragedy-latest-zimbabwe-embassy-dispatches-team-to-accident-scene/">via The Herald</a>):

Following the tragic accident that occurred on March 9, about 140 km from Cape Town, South Africa along the N1 highway, involving a Zimbabwe-operated bus company, Simlex Tours, officials from the Zimbabwe Consulate visited the accident scene to offer assistance.
Currently, the Consulate is working flat out to assist the victims of the accident. Preliminary reports indicate that 13 people are confirmed dead, while 12 are still hospitalised, nine are at the Worcester Hospital and three others are hospitalised in Cape Town.
Thirty-eight (38) have since been discharged and further details will be availed in due course.

Zimbabwe Embassy Dispatches Team To Western Cape Bus Accident Scene

Six people were killed on Friday afternoon at the 35-kilometre peg along the Mutare-Marange Road while 12 others were injured in a road traffic accident involving a haulage truck and a Mazda BT50 vehicle.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident saying the fatal crash occurred around 1:30 PM.
He said a Mazda BT50 vehicle with 17 passengers on board, travelling towards 22 Miles, was hit from behind by a haulage truck while giving way to a truck at Marange Turn-off.
Asst Comm Nyathi said that the haulage truck’s driver fled from the accident scene.
Police have released the names of the deceased persons:

<li>Anna Tariro Machangachanga, a female adult (30) of Sakubva, Mutare.</li>
<li>Joyce Duchi, a female adult of Mushunje Primary School, Mutare.</li>

Six People Killed As Haulage Truck Ploughs Into Mazda BT50

Four people died while several others sustained serious injuries in a road traffic accident involving a bus, haulage truck and a Mercedes Benz vehicle along the Harare-Mutare highway, near Marondera, on Wednesday, 27 December.
<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200021421/four-die-in-marondera-road-accident">NewsDay</a> cited Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, who was at the scene of the crash, as saying four bodies had been retrieved from the wreckage and the death toll could rise after rescue teams complete the removal of trapped people.

Four Killed In Marondera Accident Involving Bus, Mercedes Benz & Haulage Truck

The Acting Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Chris Mutsvangwa has implored drivers to exercise caution on the roads to curb avoidable accidents during the festive season following the death of 12 people in two separate accidents that occurred on Sunday and Monday.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said on Sunday, around 3 PM, three people were killed when a Sino truck with three passengers on board was involved in a head-on collision with a DAF truck at the 50-kilometre peg along Mutare Juliasdale Road.
Asst Comm Nyathi said on Monday, nine people were killed whilst three others were injured in a head-on collision involving two Honda Fit vehicles around 2.30 AM at the 43-kilometre peg along Harare-Mukumbura Road.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/govt-urges-caution-after-9-killed-in-head-on-collision/">The Herald</a>, Mutsvangwa urged drivers to exercise caution on the roads. He said:

The festive season has started on a painful and tragic note with two terrible car accidents.
Taking due cue from the Head of State, the Ministries of Home Affairs and of Transport, the Zimbabwe Republic Police and other Government traffic safety agencies are imploring the driving public to exercise due safety and extra care on our highways.
H.E. the President Dr. Emmerson D. Mnangagwa issued an impassioned plea for safe driving with an emphasis against drinking and driving in his address at the final Politburo meeting of 2023.
Every driver owes it to all fellow road users to exercise maximum alertness once one takes to the highway.

During the ZANU PF Politburo meeting last week, Mnangagwa cautioned motorists not to drive under the influence of alcohol to prevent the unnecessary loss of lives.

Mutsvangwa Urges Caution After 12 Killed In Head-on Collisions

STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER OF TRANSPORT AND INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT, HONOURABLE F. T. MHONA (MP) URGING MOTORISTS AND ALL ROAD USERS TO EXERCISE CAUTION DURING THE YEAR 2023/2024 FESTIVE SEASON
Fellow Citizens,
The festive season is upon us! Unity Day is on Friday, 22 December 2023, Christmas falls on Monday, 25 December 2023 and New Year is on Monday, 1 January 2024.
I wish to thank all Zimbabweans and visitors to our country during the year 2023 for heeding our call to observe rules and regulations on our roads throughout the year. However, the year 2023 was not without unfortunate incidences on our roads.
Let me express our deep-seated condolences to the families of the deceased and those who got injured in road accidents during the year 2023.
While we have taken time as a Government to commiserate with the families of the deceased and those who got injured during the year, we continue to embolden the deceased families to remain strong during the difficult period of grief.
We however need to take stock of what happened in the year 2023 and avoid a replica of such unpleasant statistics in 2024.
The festive season is characterised by high levels of mobility. Our beloved compatriots from the neighbouring countries will be traversing the motherland, in and out of our borders.
The season is also associated with excessive excitement, as we celebrate the gift of life. Road traffic densities increase at a time when the rainy season is at its peak.
It is during this period that we witness an increase in road traffic deaths and injuries that are way above average.
This is so because of increased vehicular and pedestrian traffic. All these factors increase incidences of fatalities on our roads.
As we travel on our roads, let us avoid the following transgressions among others:
Overspeeding: remember that speed thrills but it klis; Overloading: Disregarding Road signs; multi-tasking, such as drinking or chatting on the cellphone whilst driving; and Driving under the influence of alcohol;
Driving vehicles with defects and worn-out tyres: Driving vehicles fitted with illegal additional headlights; Road rage, Attempting to go past flooded rivers and bridges even with an empty bus; Driving public service vehicles [Those with licenses to transport members of the public] without valid certificates of fitness and other requirements such as valid route authority in terms of the Road Motor Transportation Act [Chapter 13: 15] and prescriptions of the Road Traffic Act [Chapter 13:11]
My Ministry shall deploy multi-stakeholder teams comprising the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, ZRP and VID officials for a full-fledged awareness campaign on road safety.
Enforcement agencies are urged to arrest all transgressors of road traffic laws and refer them for prosecution without fear or favour.
May I remind all transporters who violate Traffic laws that relevant authorities will be ready to enforce the law and if need be, withdraw their operators’ licenses in terms of the law.
We are in the rainy season. Rains can reduce visibility, make our roads slippery and year in, and year out, we have heard of vehicles being swept away by flooded rivers.
We must not attempt to go through flooded rivers and bridges. Let us all take responsibility for our lives and those of others.
We have also observed worrisome behaviour on our roads where when rain commences, drivers start disregarding road rules.
In urban centres, for instance, transgressions such as additional lanes, road jams at intersections, disregarding traffic lights and driving towards on-coming traffic, and creating human-induced gridlocks, are rampant. Let us guard against such tendencies!
As you may be aware, the Government is implementing the ongoing Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme 2 in terms of 51 47 of 2021. A
s you drive, you will witness several detours along our roads including highways. Kindly drive carefully along the detours, as some may be slippery due to rain. Further, observe instructions by those waving flags.
My Ministry made legislative interventions, in the form of Statutory Instrument 118 of 2023, on Speed Limiting and Monitoring Devices Regulations.
I, therefore, call upon all stakeholders, the TSCZ, VID, RMT, Enforcement Agencies, Operators, Operators’ Associations and all relevant players to ensure successful implementation of the regulations and adherence to the timelines set therein.
I wish you all a Happy, accident-free Unity Day, Christmas Day and a Prosperous 2024.

Transport Minister Urges Caution On The Roads During Festive Season | Full Statement

A road accident occurs in Zimbabwe every 15 minutes, the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) has said.
Most of the accidents are attributed to reckless driving, inadequate enforcement of traffic laws and use of defective vehicles, among other factors.
TSCZ said 14 600 people died and 74 000 were injured in road accidents between 2015 and 2022.
In the first nine months of this year, over 1 500 people were killed, and more than 7 200 injured from more than 38 400 accidents countrywide.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/zim-records-road-accident-every-15-minutes">The Sunday Mail</a>, TSCZ managing director, Munesu Munodawafa, said that most road accidents are recorded during major public holidays. Said Munodawafa:

It is disturbing that, as of September 30 this year, we had recorded 38 482 road accidents, a total of 1 545 deaths and 7 294 injuries on our roads.
These numbers are worrisome. Putting that into context, we have a road accident every 15 minutes in Zimbabwe and about five people die while 38 are injured in road accidents every day.
The highest number of accidents are recorded during major public holidays and days around major public holidays.
Most of the accidents, particularly those involving light motor vehicles, tend to happen during the early hours of Saturday, around midnight or just before sunrise on Sunday.
</blockquote>
He said there is a need to change TSCZ to a Traffic Safety Agency and give it authority to enforce arrests of those who violate traffic rules. Said Munodawafa:

The board insists on changing the Traffic Safety Council (of Zimbabwe) to a Traffic Safety Agency — the agency that will be able to enforce arrests of those who infringe road regulations, just like how the Environmental Management Agency operates.
There is also a need to put speed limits on buses because the problem with these vehicles is that they sometimes travel at speeds that are as high as 140 kilometres per hour, and most of them will be transporting more than 60 passengers.
We are working with the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the media and various stakeholders to raise awareness.
</blockquote>
Munodawafa said the Government also needs to operationalise the Road Accident Fund.

Zimbabwe Records Road Accident Every 15 Minutes - Traffic Safety Council

The Government is planning to establish a road accident fund in order to remove the burden imposed on the fiscus in the event of road accidents.
This was said by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development Felix Mhona in response to questions from senators. Mhona said:
<blockquote>
We are saying not only that we are putting measures, but we are also in the process of coming to this House and National Assembly to advocate for a road accident fund that will mitigate the burden being imposed on the fiscus as we speak so that we will be in a position to also cater for those dependents and also bury decently the deceased.
Indeed, that fund will then alleviate the burden that we are witnessing and it will also go the extra mile in trying to address some of the concerns of the citizens where we are also going to be administering, whether they are bills or paying for the dependents.
We are also seized as a Ministry in trying to benchmark ourselves with other countries within the neighbourhood on the issue of best practices.
</blockquote>
Calls for the establishment of a road accident fund followed a spate of road accidents that claimed more than thirty lives in the past few days.
On Monday last week, six people were killed in a road accident in Mwenezi, and three others in Chipinge in similar circumstances.
Barely 24 hours later, 22 people were killed when a South Africa-bound Toyota Quantum minibus crashed head-on against a truck.

Govt Mulls Road Accident Fund

Statement by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Nyathi on fatal road traffic accidents in Masvingo, Rusape, Esigodini, and Murewa:
<blockquote>
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 28th July 2023 at around 1530 hours at the 35-kilometre peg along Masvingo-Beitbridge Road where six (6) people were killed whilst six (6) others were injured.
A Nissan Caravan vehicle with thirteen (13) passengers on board veered off the road to the right and overturned before landing on its wheels.
Three (3) of the six (6) victims were positively identified by their next of kin as listed:-
<ul>
<li>Murenjekwa Tendai (76), a female adult of Silver City, Chivi,</li>
<li>Moyo Gracious (40), a male adult of Muera Village, Shumba, Chivi,</li>
<li>Muzondiwa Leonard (49), a male adult of Southerton, Harare.</li>
</ul>
The other three (3) victims are yet to be identified by their next of kin. The bodies of the victims were taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.
Meanwhile, six (6) people died whilst six (6) others were injured when a Mitsubishi mini-bus with eleven (11) passengers on board was hit on the left side by a Freightliner Columbia truck with one (1) passenger on board at the 158-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road on 28th July 2023 at around 1830 hours.
As a result of the accident, the Mitsubishi mini-bus which was overtaking a convoy of vehicles was dragged by the Freightliner Columbia truck to the right for about forty (40) metres.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Rusape General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.
In another fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 28th July 2023 at around 2000 hours at the 56-kilometre peg along Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road, four (4) people were killed when a Honda Fit vehicle with three (3) passengers on board was involved in a head-on collision with a Shacman F 3000 haulage truck with no passengers on board.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Esigodini District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
On 27th July 2023 at around 1450 hours at the 150-kilometre peg along Harare-Nyamapanda Road, two (2) people died whilst one (1) person was injured when a Nissan NP 300 vehicle with two (2) passengers on board veered off the road before hitting a tree.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Kotwa Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured person is admitted at the same hospital.
Meanwhile, one (1) person was killed whilst eleven (11) others were injured when the left rear tyre of a Nissan Vannette vehicle burst, resulting in the vehicle veering off the road to the right before overturning and landing on its right side at the 30-kilometre peg along Harare -Nyamapanda Road on 27th July 2023 at around 1600 hours. The vehicle had eleven passengers on board.
The body of the victim was taken to Murewa Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured were admitted at Chipfumbi Clinic, Juru.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that motorists should be patient on the roads and avoid overtaking when it is not safe to do so. Above all, drivers are urged to be observant and avoid speeding.

Fatal Road Traffic Accidents In Masvingo, Rusape, Esigodini, And Murewa

Six (6) people died in a road traffic accident that occurred in Rusape along the Harare-Mutare Road on Friday evening.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident to <a href="https://zbcnews.co.zw/2023/07/29/six-perish-in-road-accident/">ZBC News</a>, saying three people died on the spot while the others died on admission at Rusape General Hospital.
Asst Comm Nyathi said that a Harare-bound commuter omnibus side-swiped a haulage truck, as the driver tried to overtake at a sharp curve before Rusape tollgate.
Six other people who were in the commuter omnibus are admitted at Rusape General Hospital after sustaining injuries.

Six People Killed In Rusape Kombi Accident

Four people were killed along the Harare-Mutare Road near Mabvuku turn-off on Monday, 17 July, at around 5.30 AM following a head-on collision involving two Honda Fit cars.
Police said a Honda Fit vehicle with four passengers on board hit a pedestrian before veering to the right where it collided head-on with another Honda Fit vehicle with one passenger on board.
On Tuesday, ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi released the names of three (3) of the four (4) accused victims. They are:
<ul>
<li>Roseline Mudzimbasekwa (38), a female adult of Zimre Park, Harare</li>
<li>Sharon Chigwada (46), a female adult of New Mabvuku, Harare</li>
<li>Sharon Chigwada (46), a female adult of New Mabvuku, Harare</li>
</ul>
Asst Comm Nyathi said the other victim’s next of kin has not yet been located. He implored drivers to exercise caution on the roads to prevent the loss of lives.

Four Perish In Mabvuku Turn Off Head-on Collision

Police have released the names of six people who were killed in a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on 10 June 2023 in Dotito at the 181-kilometre peg along the Harare-Mukumbura Road.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the six victims have been identified by their next of kin. They are:

Romeo Nyapfere of Empowerment, Willovale, Harare,
Shamain Nyoka of Gorejena Village, Dotito, Mt Darwin,
Stella Chikadaya of Kabhareta Village, Kandeya, Mt Darwin,
Fackson Chiungu, a one-week-old infant of Kabhareta Village, Kandeya, Mt Darwin,
Kosva Nawero of Rujeko, Glendale,
Aurthur Nheta of Kararira Village, Chiswiti, Mukumbura
</blockquote>
Asst Comm Nyathi urged rivers to be safety conscious and regularly check vehicle tyres to ensure that they meet road conditions.
He also implored bus operators to ensure that public service vehicles do not exceed their stipulated load capacity to safeguard lives on the roads.
The accident when a CAG bus travelling towards Harare burst a front tyre resulting in the bus veering off the road to the left before overturning and landing on its right side.
