Over 130 deaths were recorded in road traffic accidents during the festive season in Zimbabwe, as reported by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP). The period covered was from 15th December 2023 to 8th January 2024. In a statement seen by Pindula News, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the police national spokesperson, stated that although the number of deaths decreased compared to the previous year’s festive season (15th December 2022 to 8th January 2023), there was an increase in the number of injuries this time around.
Accident statistics for 15 Dec 2023 – 08 Jan 2024 are as follows:

The ZRP emphasised the importance of cautious driving, particularly when facing flooded rivers and bridges to prevent drowning incidents. The public was advised to report any instances of reckless driving to the nearest police station or through the provided contact numbers. The police assured that they would continue enforcing road rules and regulations without bias.
The final statistics for the 2023-2024 festive season accidents will be released on 16th January 2024.

Police Say Over 130 People Died In Festive Season Accidents

Four people died in a road accident on 21 December 2023 along the Harare-Bulawayo Road around 6:30 am. A police report seen by Pindula News says a Honda Fit car carrying four passengers and travelling towards Bulawayo, collided head-on with a Toyota Aqua car coming from the opposite direction. Sadly, three people from the Toyota Aqua, including the driver, and one person from the Honda Fit died instantly. Five others sustained injuries. Read the police report:

The ZRP reports a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 343 km peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road on 21/12/23 at around 0630 hours, where a motorist who was driving a Honda Fit vehicle with four passengers on board towards Bulawayo collided head-on with a Toyota Aqua vehicle which had three passengers and going the opposite direction. As a result of the collision, four people, three from the Toyota Aqua vehicle, including the driver and one from the Honda Fit vehicle, died on the spot while five others were injured.

Police said the names of the victims will be released at a later time.
In another accident that occurred yesterday along the Harare-Masvingo Road, three people died on the spot when an Isuzu Rigid truck collided with a Jaguar. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the fatal road accident adding that the Isuzu Rigid truck which was carrying two passengers and heading towards Harare, collided head-on with a Jaguar car carrying three passengers going towards Masvingo at around 1:00 am.  Three people in the Jaguar were trapped and died at the scene.

Accidents: 7 People Die Along Harare-Bulawayo And Harare-Masvingo Roads

The Government is planning to establish a road accident fund in order to remove the burden imposed on the fiscus in the event of road accidents.
This was said by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development Felix Mhona in response to questions from senators. Mhona said:

We are saying not only that we are putting measures, but we are also in the process of coming to this House and National Assembly to advocate for a road accident fund that will mitigate the burden being imposed on the fiscus as we speak so that we will be in a position to also cater for those dependents and also bury decently the deceased.
Indeed, that fund will then alleviate the burden that we are witnessing and it will also go the extra mile in trying to address some of the concerns of the citizens where we are also going to be administering, whether they are bills or paying for the dependents.
We are also seized as a Ministry in trying to benchmark ourselves with other countries within the neighbourhood on the issue of best practices.

Calls for the establishment of a road accident fund followed a spate of road accidents that claimed more than thirty lives in the past few days.
On Monday last week, six people were killed in a road accident in Mwenezi, and three others in Chipinge in similar circumstances.
Barely 24 hours later, 22 people were killed when a South Africa-bound Toyota Quantum minibus crashed head-on against a truck.

Govt Mulls Road Accident Fund

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed four deaths resulting from two separate road accidents along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Highway and Bulawayo-Victoria Falls road.
According to police reports obtained by Pindula News, the first incident involved a trailer detaching from a Ford Ranger vehicle, causing the death of two pedestrians and injuring three others at the 36-kilometre mark on the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road. Reads the report:

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident in which two pedestrians were killed whilst three others were injured after being hit by a trailer which had unhooked from a Ford Ranger vehicle at the 36 kilometre peg along Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road on 04/08/23 at about 1730 hours.

The second accident occurred this Saturday when a Toyota Hilux vehicle with foreign number plates experienced a tire blowout, resulting in one fatality and ten injuries at the 200-kilometre mark on Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road. Police reported:

Police Report 4 Deaths From Bulawayo-Beitbridge, Bulawayo-Vic Falls Road Accidents

Statement by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Nyathi on fatal road traffic accidents in Masvingo, Rusape, Esigodini, and Murewa:
<blockquote>
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 28th July 2023 at around 1530 hours at the 35-kilometre peg along Masvingo-Beitbridge Road where six (6) people were killed whilst six (6) others were injured.
A Nissan Caravan vehicle with thirteen (13) passengers on board veered off the road to the right and overturned before landing on its wheels.
Three (3) of the six (6) victims were positively identified by their next of kin as listed:-
<ul>
<li>Murenjekwa Tendai (76), a female adult of Silver City, Chivi,</li>
<li>Moyo Gracious (40), a male adult of Muera Village, Shumba, Chivi,</li>
<li>Muzondiwa Leonard (49), a male adult of Southerton, Harare.</li>
</ul>
The other three (3) victims are yet to be identified by their next of kin. The bodies of the victims were taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.
Meanwhile, six (6) people died whilst six (6) others were injured when a Mitsubishi mini-bus with eleven (11) passengers on board was hit on the left side by a Freightliner Columbia truck with one (1) passenger on board at the 158-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road on 28th July 2023 at around 1830 hours.
As a result of the accident, the Mitsubishi mini-bus which was overtaking a convoy of vehicles was dragged by the Freightliner Columbia truck to the right for about forty (40) metres.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Rusape General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.
In another fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 28th July 2023 at around 2000 hours at the 56-kilometre peg along Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road, four (4) people were killed when a Honda Fit vehicle with three (3) passengers on board was involved in a head-on collision with a Shacman F 3000 haulage truck with no passengers on board.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Esigodini District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
On 27th July 2023 at around 1450 hours at the 150-kilometre peg along Harare-Nyamapanda Road, two (2) people died whilst one (1) person was injured when a Nissan NP 300 vehicle with two (2) passengers on board veered off the road before hitting a tree.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Kotwa Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured person is admitted at the same hospital.
Meanwhile, one (1) person was killed whilst eleven (11) others were injured when the left rear tyre of a Nissan Vannette vehicle burst, resulting in the vehicle veering off the road to the right before overturning and landing on its right side at the 30-kilometre peg along Harare -Nyamapanda Road on 27th July 2023 at around 1600 hours. The vehicle had eleven passengers on board.
The body of the victim was taken to Murewa Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured were admitted at Chipfumbi Clinic, Juru.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that motorists should be patient on the roads and avoid overtaking when it is not safe to do so. Above all, drivers are urged to be observant and avoid speeding.

Fatal Road Traffic Accidents In Masvingo, Rusape, Esigodini, And Murewa

More than 1 500 people have been killed on the country’s roads between January and September this year, a cabinet minister has revealed.
Speaking at the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDR) in Bulawayo on Saturday, Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Felix Mhona expressed concern over the high number of people killed in road traffic accidents. He said:

This year alone, from January to September 2022, we had 38 776 crashes, 1 559 killed and 7 851 injured.
This translates to a traffic collision every 15 minutes, an average of 45 injuries per day, and an average of five deaths per day.
Friday nights, Saturdays and festive seasons are the worst.
</blockquote>
Mhona said the government is committed to reducing road traffic accidents by 50 per cent under the National Development Strategy 1. He added:
<blockquote>
The carnage on our roads must stop! Surely, it can only be through us that we put an end to the silent killer on our roads.
This is a war we can win as roughly 94 % of road traffic accidents are directly attributed to human error.
A change in human behaviour could therefore easily result in lowering the worrisome statistics.

1 500 People Killed In Road Accidents This Year - Minister Mhona

An accident in KwaZulu Natal South African claimed the lives of an entire Zimbabwean family last weekend – a woman aged 36 years, her husband of 38, and their two children aged 10 and 5.
The family was traveling in a Toyota Fortuner that collided with a Porsche Cayenne.
Said Transport, Community Safety, and Liaison MEC Bheki Ntuli:
<blockquote>I’m deeply saddened at the continued loss of lives. Losing an entire family in just one accident is such a great tragedy. In this particular accident we have lost two families.
We once again extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and our officials will continue supporting the families as the make arrangements to bury their loved ones.</blockquote>
4 people also died in the Porsche Cayenne, which burst into flames on collision.

Entire Zimbabwean Family Dies In SA Road Accident

Six people died and seven others were injured when a commuter omnibus they were travelling in caught fire, after veering off the road before hitting a tree along Mvurwi-Guruve road on Saturday morning.
Police Spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi told Star FM News that the commuter omnibus which was carrying 13 people, was travelling from Guruve to Harare. He said five of the dead were burnt beyond recognition while the other died upon arrival at Guruve hospital.

5 People Burnt Beyond Recognition In Mvurwi-Guruve Road Accident

Matabeleland North provincial medical director Nyasha Masuka confirmed that 30 survivors of the Tsholotsho road accident which occurred at the weekend and killed 21 people, have been discharged from hospital after they were certified to be in a stable condition.
He dismissed social media reports that the death toll had risen. Said Masuka:
<blockquote>We only have one male who is in a very critical condition at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo. He sustained a head injury and is still in the intensive care unit. We have so far discharged 22 at Mpilo, five at Tsholotsho and three at United Bulawayo Hospitals. The death cases haven’t risen, those social media claims are not true.</blockquote>

30 Tsholotsho Jimila accident victims discharged from hospital

At least 5 people are feared dead after a Toyota Granvia which they were travelling in was involved in an accident with a Bercam bus just outside Zvishavane on the highway to Bulawayo.
Eye witnesses told ZBC News that the car turned right in front of the bus as it sought to avoid a roadblock ahead. The bus then reportedly crushed into the kombi and dragged it for approximately 50 metres. ZBC News is however yet to get the exact number of fatalities and the circumstances leading to the accident.

5 feared dead in Zvishavane accident

A Government official who preferred anonymity told The Sunday Mail last week said that they are drafting an instrument that will prohibit cross-border and inter-city bus from travelling between  9pm and 5am as a measure to reduce road accidents.
Said the official:
<blockquote>The draft proposes that driving for public transporters stop at 9pm and resume around 5am. Discussions around the issue are still underway as some are opposing the idea, arguing that it is not good for business. The proposal has been taken from other countries such as Zambia, which prohibit public transporters from operating after 9pm.</blockquote>
When contacted for comment, Civil Protection Unit director Mr Nathan Nkomo confirmed the proposals and said:
<blockquote>A Cabinet Committee on Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Management came up with a position paper that contains a raft of measures which will try to address the carnage issue. We have realised that most road carnage is being caused by human error. So, we are working on how best to curb speeding, overloading and removing unroadworthy vehicles from the roads. We have also included stiffer penalties for urban transport such as illegal taxis as they are contributing to deaths.</blockquote>

Buses to be banned from travelling at night

Five people died on the spot while nine others were seriously injured when a Mutare bound Inter Africa bus came off Harare-Mutare Highway in the early hours of Wednesday (26 April) and hit a tree at Shamu near Odzi.
Officer Commanding Police in Manicaland Isaac Tavengwa confirmed the accident and attributed it to speed and fatigue. He said those that were injured were taken to Mutare Provincial Hospital and Rusape General Hospital. He did not release the names of the deceased as their next of kin have not been notified yet.
According to sources interviewed by The Herald, the driver was dozing at the wheel and at one point took a nap at Nyazura before abruptly starting the engine with the bus getting involved in an accident 30 km after he had resumed the journey.

Just In: Inter Africa bus accident kills five, nine seriously injured

Speaking to Sunday News, Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe spokesperson Mr Ernest Muchena said new traffic signs stipulating minimum speed limits will be set up on certain stretches of highways after it was discovered that some accidents were caused by slow drivers. Those caught driving below the minimum speed limit will be fined. At the moment regulations to do with speed was focusing on maximum speed only.
Said Muchena:
<blockquote>The upgraded Highway Code also has minimum speed signs. We were used to regulatory signs but we now have prohibitive and command signs. The minimum speed sign is white with a blue background and tells the driver to travel for example at 50 km/hr or above. If you are caught driving bellow 50km/hr that will be an offence. You will not find that sort of sign in Bulawayo urban but maybe on the road from Bulawayo to Nkayi where there may be a continuous stretch. When you are traveling at 100km/hr on such a stretch then you come across someone driving at 30km/hr, such scenarios may contribute to accidents, especially when you are coming from behind.</blockquote>

Drivers caught driving below the minimum speed limit to be fined as Govt moves to curb road accidents

ZPC Kariba coach Sunday Chidzambwa was involved in a car accident in Kariba on Wednesday morning.
It is yet unclear what caused the accident but Chidzambwa is said to have escaped unhurt. <a href="https://twitter.com/Dembare_DotComs/status/852095992711270401">According to Dembare Dotcom</a>s Chidzambwa hit a pedestrian who was badly injured.The Chronicle reports that ZPC Kariba manager Partson Ndabambi was not available for comment.

Sunday Chidzambwa involved in car accident, injures pedestrian

National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba told Sunday News that drivers who will be caught speeding during the Easter Holidays will not be ticketed on the spot but arrested, barred from continuing with their journeys and prosecuted. The maximum speed allowed on Zimbabwe’s roads is 120km/hour on highways for small cars while trucks and buses are allowed to go up to 80 km/hour.
Said Charamba:
<blockquote>The major cause of accidents on our roads is speeding. We are going to be serious about this and arrest speeding drivers. Yes, the law says we must give tickets, but we are going to be tough. We won’t let you drive if you are caught speeding. Let me issue a stern warning to all public service vehicle operators against overloading passengers. We will be tough and not allow you to proceed. All unroadworthy vehicles will be impounded. Drivers should make sure that their vehicles are not defective, before taking them onto our roads.</blockquote>

Drivers caught speeding to be arrested & not fined this Easter holiday

Last Thursday, a police officer, who’s name was not provided, drove into a hardware located along Herbert Chitepo and 14th Avenue in Bulawayo’s Central Business District after he overshot the kerb and smashed the hardware’s display window.
Witnesses who spoke to The Chronicle said the police officer accelerated instead of applying the brakes. Last month a police officer who was doing driving lessons crashed into FarmBiz Shop.

Four pupils were injured when a commuter omnibus carrying 18 school children crashed into a ditch following a 5km high speed chase by motorbike cops in Bulawayo.
 
Witnesses who spoke to The Chronicle alleged the police chased the kombi from Baines Junior School in Northend to Sauerstown suburb. The incident occurred on Tuesday at about 5PM and the kombi driver who was involved in the high speed chase was ferrying pupils from Townsend, Milton and Eveline High schools to their different destinations.
The four injured pupils were rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital where they were treated and discharged. The police officers allegedly escaped from the scene after realising that the kombi had plunged into a ditch. A parent who identified herself as Patience said although the driver’s behaviour cannot be condoned, she was disappointed with the police’s response. Speaking to The Chronicle, the kombi driver, Mr Mzingaye Ncube said:
 
<blockquote>It happened at about 5PM while I was being chased by the police. When we reached Beech Road in Sauerstown suburb I lost control of the vehicle and it plunged into a ditch. I admit that it was wrong to escape from the police. What however I don’t understand is that when the police saw that I was involved in an accident, they made a u-turn and fled instead of assisting us.</blockquote>
