Six <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/RioZim_Limited">Riozim</a>‘s Renco Gold Mine employees have been arrested by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in connection with a case of unauthorized entry and theft in which 7 kg of calcine, worth US$120 000 was taken from the mine’s gold room.
According to the ZRP, the incident was caught on camera by the mine’s CCTV, which led to the arrest of six suspects and the current whereabouts of the other three.
The police recovered property worth US$4 960 and ZAR 25000 which had been bought by the suspects using the proceeds of the heist. In a report seen by Pindula News, police said:

Police in Masvingo have arrested a Rio Zim Renco Mine worker, Davison Chivungani (23) and the mine’s five security guards, Lackson Museka (34), Vincent Mazorodze (25), Joyce Maneswa (39), Leonard Mujeri (42) as well as Chiduke Solomon, in connection with a case of unlawful entry and theft in which 7kgs of Calcine valued at US$120 000, were stolen from a gold room at Rio Zim Renco Mine on 08/01/23.
The heist was captured by the mine’s CCTV. The arrest led to the recovery of property worth US$4 960 and ZAR 2500 which had been bought by the suspects using the proceeds of the heist.

The report added that the suspect’s accomplices identified as Sam Sibanda, Ben Wellington and Godfrey Totamu were still on the run.

Six Riozim's Renco Gold Mine Employees Arrested For Stealing Calcine Worth US$120 000

RioZim has bought Sperrgebiet Diamond Mine in Namibia as the Zimbabwean group seeks to expand in Africa.
Without disclosing the amount paid for the mine, Tawanda Andrew Chiurayi, RioZim’s group company secretary told Bloomberg News that they also want to diversify their assets. Said Chiurayi:

The group has been trying to broaden its footprint in the mining industry in Africa and this acquisition was part of the strategy.
We also want to diversify our assets and geographies.
</blockquote>
However, people familiar with the matter who spoke to Bloomberg on condition of anonymity said that the acquisition cost US$58 million.
Sperrgebiet holds two onshore and two offshore mining licences, within Luderitz’s protected diamond zones, according to the company’s website.
Chiurayi said RioZim is also planning further investments in base and precious metals in Zimbabwe, after spending more than US$150 million at its gold mine and a new plant at the Murowa diamond mine.
He said Output at Murowa tripled in September following the investment. 
RioZim, which also has interests in coal and a nickel refinery, said rules that oblige miners in Zimbabwe to switch 40 percent of their income into local currency are proving a drag on its operations.
Chiurayi said forex shortages and power shortages are seriously hampering progress, but remained hopeful that their long-term plans won’t be inhibited.

RioZim Buys A Namibian Diamond Company

The General Secretary of the Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Minerals Workers Union (ZDAMWU), Mr Justice Chinhema has said the union is shocked by RioZim’s decision to ban The World Day for Decent Work commemorations. In a statement sent to Pindula News, Chinhema said they had scheduled to commemorate the day this Friday at RioZim Cam &amp; Motor Mine in Kadoma. Reads the statement:

ZDAMWU PRESS STATEMENT ON BAN OF THE WORLD DAY FOR DECENT WORK COMMEMORATIONS AT RIOZIM 
The Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Minerals Workers Union (ZDAMWU) notes with utter disbelief the disdain being displayed by RioZim management of its workers by banning commemorations of The World Day for Decent Work. We arranged to commemorate this day today 7 October 2022 at RioZim Cam &amp; Motor Mine in Kadoma a mine owed by RioZim.
The choice of RioZim did not come as a coincidence. Following consultations with our members and other stakeholders, RioZim was ideal for hosting this year’s commemorations but the message is designed to remind all employers in the mining industry in Zimbabwe that Decent Work is a Right which we must all practice all the time.
We had made a deliberate choice to commemorate the Word Day for Decent Work at RioZim because our members there are facing a plethora of challenges across all its mines and the recent closure of Dalny mine and threatening to retrench all permanent workers at ENR we then felt these workers and their families requires solitary in their hard times. The challenges include late payment of salaries, poor working conditions, disregard of known workplace engagement platforms like the works council, poor safety and health standards, rampant casualisation of labour and the recent termination of employment contracts for all fixed-term contracts.
To add salt to injury the community of Chakari where they closed down the mine is currently in darkness because Zesa switched off the power.
There is no hope of continued employment of workers currently working for RioZim Mines namely Cam &amp; Motor and Renco Mine. Families of these workers are now facing economic distress.
For two (2) years workers were made to understand that the Biox plant was going to be a game changer for everyone, months down after the commissioning of the Biox plant, things have remained the same.
Against this background, we want to make it very clear that ZDAMWU will not seat back when the survival of our members, their families and communities are under threat for economic survival. We are saying the mining industry is the backbone of this country and workers working in this precarious sector need to be protected.
The objective of this campaign is to address employers and workers on the need to promote decent work all the time.
We believe that-
<ol>
<li>Every person on earth should be able to have a job that enables them to live a good life in which their basic needs are met.</li>
<li>We believe that employment is a crucial factor for achieving this and after working every employee is entitled to a salary paid in full on time.</li>
<li>The women, men, and young people who are working in the mining industry need employers that take adequate measures that:</li>
</ol>
<ul>
<li>Ensure social protection and workers ‘rights are fully respected in labour laws and in practice.</li>
<li>Living standards and economies need productive employment to develop.</li>
<li>Create jobs for women and men that are linked to standards and rights as well as social protection that gives workers the security they need to face the future with confidence not the current situation mine workers face today which is causing some workers to fail to send their children to school or have a decent life of a worker.</li>
</ul>
We are fed up with the attitude and practices of some companies currently operating in Zimbabwe big and small. We want prioritization of safety and health, living wage linked to the PDL and value of minerals mined. We want to see mines that complement government policies on job creation and job security. We have taken a deliberate position that No more closures of mines under our watch. Any mine that fails to pay its workers on time, or that fails to operate in terms of the law to the extent of affecting communities that survive through them will be inviting corporate rescue which is meant to resurrect failing entities like Rio Zim.
In our view, we should not wait until another mine collapse and jobs are lost like what happened to SMM, Zisco Steal. Diligence requires that we act now.

Mine Workers Criticise RioZim For Banning The World Day For Decent Work Commemorations

Hundreds of families in Chakari, a mining settlement located about 33 kilometres from Kadoma, in Mashonaland West Province, are experiencing terrible hardships following the temporary closure of Dalny Mine, operated by RioZim Limited.
The mine was operated by Falcon Gold Zimbabwe Limited for many years until 2013 when it was closed and eventually sold to Rio Zim.
As a predominantly mining settlement, an estimated 90 per cent of employed people used to work for the mine and the rest for TelOne and shops.
When Falcon Gold closed the mine, the majority of the working population was left jobless and many resorted to illegal mining in the belly of the mining, eking out a living from deep tunnels.
The majority of the houses in the area were built by and belonged to the company and as a result, the closure of the mine by Falcon Gold left workers technically homeless.
However, the situation was not as hopeless since they could still stay in the houses for free, use water for free and electricity was also available for free.
The acquisition of Dalny Mine by Rio Zim naturally excited the former mine workers but it soon turned out that their optimism was misplaced.
Rio Zim brought its own workforce from Eiffel Flats and wanted to evict the former Falcon workers from company accommodation and this created tension.
Moreover, Rio Zim shunned operating the tunnels and resorted to open cast mining thereby causing untold environmental issues.
The open pits have also become a hazard to the local community and a child reportedly fell into a pit and died recently.
The closure of the mine by Rio Zim in February this year has exacerbated the challenges faced by the Chakari community.
The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has switched off power leaving the former miners in darkness.
The cutting off of electricity by the power utility has also caused water challenges for the community and the sewer system has clogged up.
There are a few community boreholes and they are not enough to meet the needs of the people.
Some have now resorted to defecating in the bush due to the clogging up of the sewer system while others are using pit latrines and blair toilets.
The former workers are now relocating to the village as it is not clear when Rio Zim will reopen Dalny Mine.
Those relocating to rural areas are probably the fortunate ones as most of the workers are second-generation immigrants from Malawi who now have nowhere to go.
