The General Secretary of the Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Minerals Workers Union (ZDAMWU), Mr Justice Chinhema has said the union is shocked by RioZim’s decision to ban The World Day for Decent Work commemorations. In a statement sent to Pindula News, Chinhema said they had scheduled to commemorate the day this Friday at RioZim Cam &amp; Motor Mine in Kadoma. Reads the statement:

ZDAMWU PRESS STATEMENT ON BAN OF THE WORLD DAY FOR DECENT WORK COMMEMORATIONS AT RIOZIM 
The Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Minerals Workers Union (ZDAMWU) notes with utter disbelief the disdain being displayed by RioZim management of its workers by banning commemorations of The World Day for Decent Work. We arranged to commemorate this day today 7 October 2022 at RioZim Cam &amp; Motor Mine in Kadoma a mine owed by RioZim.
The choice of RioZim did not come as a coincidence. Following consultations with our members and other stakeholders, RioZim was ideal for hosting this year’s commemorations but the message is designed to remind all employers in the mining industry in Zimbabwe that Decent Work is a Right which we must all practice all the time.
We had made a deliberate choice to commemorate the Word Day for Decent Work at RioZim because our members there are facing a plethora of challenges across all its mines and the recent closure of Dalny mine and threatening to retrench all permanent workers at ENR we then felt these workers and their families requires solitary in their hard times. The challenges include late payment of salaries, poor working conditions, disregard of known workplace engagement platforms like the works council, poor safety and health standards, rampant casualisation of labour and the recent termination of employment contracts for all fixed-term contracts.
To add salt to injury the community of Chakari where they closed down the mine is currently in darkness because Zesa switched off the power.
There is no hope of continued employment of workers currently working for RioZim Mines namely Cam &amp; Motor and Renco Mine. Families of these workers are now facing economic distress.
For two (2) years workers were made to understand that the Biox plant was going to be a game changer for everyone, months down after the commissioning of the Biox plant, things have remained the same.
Against this background, we want to make it very clear that ZDAMWU will not seat back when the survival of our members, their families and communities are under threat for economic survival. We are saying the mining industry is the backbone of this country and workers working in this precarious sector need to be protected.
The objective of this campaign is to address employers and workers on the need to promote decent work all the time.
We believe that-
<ol>
<li>Every person on earth should be able to have a job that enables them to live a good life in which their basic needs are met.</li>
<li>We believe that employment is a crucial factor for achieving this and after working every employee is entitled to a salary paid in full on time.</li>
<li>The women, men, and young people who are working in the mining industry need employers that take adequate measures that:</li>
</ol>
<ul>
<li>Ensure social protection and workers ‘rights are fully respected in labour laws and in practice.</li>
<li>Living standards and economies need productive employment to develop.</li>
<li>Create jobs for women and men that are linked to standards and rights as well as social protection that gives workers the security they need to face the future with confidence not the current situation mine workers face today which is causing some workers to fail to send their children to school or have a decent life of a worker.</li>
</ul>
We are fed up with the attitude and practices of some companies currently operating in Zimbabwe big and small. We want prioritization of safety and health, living wage linked to the PDL and value of minerals mined. We want to see mines that complement government policies on job creation and job security. We have taken a deliberate position that No more closures of mines under our watch. Any mine that fails to pay its workers on time, or that fails to operate in terms of the law to the extent of affecting communities that survive through them will be inviting corporate rescue which is meant to resurrect failing entities like Rio Zim.
In our view, we should not wait until another mine collapse and jobs are lost like what happened to SMM, Zisco Steal. Diligence requires that we act now.

Mine Workers Criticise RioZim For Banning The World Day For Decent Work Commemorations

Diversified mining group RioZim Limited has reportedly failed to pay retrenchment packages to 191 workers whose contracts it terminated at short notice last month.
Solidarity Mine Workers Union of Zimbabwe (SOMWUZ) secretary-general Prince Mpala told NewsDay that RioZim was treating its workers “as slaves”. Said Mpala:

The miners are being treated as slaves and we as a trade union are pushing to help them. 
A few months ago we were happy to hear that President Emmerson Mnangagwa went to commission a BIOX plant at Cam and Motor Mine, but we are perplexed to see that they are failing to pay their workers.
The workers are in a tight situation because some of them had to settle debts, loans and rentals.
We have tried to meet the management and show them what was taking place.
They said that they had no authority to explain why the workers were not being paid.
</blockquote>
One of the affected workers, who requested anonymity, said that they had not received their packages since July. Said the former employee:
<blockquote>
We were contract workers and were retrenched in July on short notice but we were supposed to be given a two-week notice. So, our packages have not been paid since July.
Our representatives were supposed to meet with the management, who refused to meet with them.

RioZim spokesperson Wilson Gwatiringa refused to comment on the matter.

Former RioZim Workers Cry Foul Over Packages

Midlands-based miner RioZim is mulling slowly taking its operations off the national power grid, in a bid to stop interruptions caused by constant power outages, Business Times reports.
This was revealed in the company’s full-year results for the period to December 2019. The chairman Saleem Beebeejuan said:
<blockquote>To mitigate this risk, the company has invested in generators that will be commissioned at Dalny and Renco Mines. In the long term, through its solar projects the group is expected to be fully independent of the power utility.</blockquote>
Constant power outages have forced the ZSE listed miner to buy generators and solar panels to mitigate power shortages that hinder production.

RioZim Mulling Weaning Off Its Operations Completely From The National Power Grid

Minister Chitando was this afternoon sentenced to three-months after he disobeyed two court orders issued by Justice Munangati-Manongwa on RioZim, Mining Zimbabwe reports.
The document about his sentencing was posted by Mining Zimbabwe and it reads in part:
<ol>
<li>The first respondent (Minister Chitando) has been found in contempt of the orders granted by this honourable court on the 6th of June 2018 and the 10th of October 2018 as ordered by (case numbers provided)</li>
<li>That the first respondent be and is hereby committed to Harare Remand Prison for a period of 3 months. The warrant for committal is however suspended on condition that the 1st respondent shall faithfully and dutifully comply with the orders of this court</li>
<li>The 1st respondent shall pay for the cost of this application.</li>
</ol>

Finance Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube has said that the availability of power is expected to increase in Zimbabwe as more power producers have stepped up.
Ncube also revealed that the government had set aside $8,5 billion to support electricity generation and imports this year as part of efforts to ease load-shedding. He said:
<blockquote>Availability of power is expected to increase as more independent power producers (IPPs) come on line.</blockquote>
He also said that companies which were going off-grid and install solar were to be incentivised. Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (Zera) on Friday announced that it had received applications from RioZim Limited to construct, own, operate and maintain a 68,4MW solar plant at Murowa Diamond Mine in Mazvihwa Communal Lands, Zvishavane District.
The Herald further reports that RioZim also intends to set up another 38,04MW solar plant at Renco Mine in Nyajena Communal Lands, Masvingo Province, and two 54MW solar plants at Cam &amp; Motor Mine; and Dalny Mine, both in Kadoma, Mashonaland West Province.
Zimbabwe has an acute power shortage at a time when fuel, petrol and diesel, which could have been used as an alternative is also in short supply due to shrinking water levels at Kariba Dam and ageing equipment at Hwange Power Station.

Finance Minister: Availability Of Power Is Expected To Increase

RioZim has resumed operations at its three gold mines after receiving arrear payments from the central bank.
The company announced last week that it was shutting down operations at its Renco, Cam and Motor and Dalny mines for the second time in four months.
The move came after the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) had failed to pay for part of its gold deliveries in United States dollars.
A statement released by the company concerning the resumption of operations read as follows:
<blockquote>… the company’s gold operations have resumed full production as normal. This development follows the fruitful discussions held with the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe which facilitated the clearance of all arrear payments thus allowing the company to resume its normal operations.</blockquote>

RioZim Restarts Operations At Three Gold Mines

Zimbabwe Stock Exchange-listed miner, RioZim, has once again involuntarily suspended operations at three of its gold mines due to foreign currency shortages.
Rio closed Cam and Motor Mine in Kadoma, Renco Mine in Masvingo and Dalny Mine in Chegutu in October last year citing a shortage of foreign currency needed to import critical consumables and spare parts. Operations at the three mines resumed after the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe in November made commitments to support all gold producers’ operations by allowing them to maintain 55 percent of their export earnings in foreign currency nostro accounts. Said RioZim:
<blockquote>Notwithstanding these commitments, the board of RioZim Limited regrets to advise that the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe through its wholly-owned subsidiary Fidelity Printers and Refiners (Private) Limited has been failing to meet these commitments.
“As of date, the company has experienced significant and persistent delays in payment of its foreign currency allocation for deliveries made to Fidelity Printers and Refiners since December 2018 and this has severely affected the viability of the company’s operations and consequently, the company has been recently forced once again, to involuntarily suspend production across all three of its gold mines pending full payment foreign exchange proceeds.</blockquote>
