Ngezi Platinum Stars captain <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Qadr_Amini">Qadr Amini</a> was on Friday night crowned as the 2023 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Soccer Star of the Year.
The 33-year-old former Zimbabwe international, who captained the club as it won its first-ever Premiership title, was accompanied by his two wives to receive the Soccer Star of the Year crown. Said Amini:

I’m speechless. I can’t express my joy right now but I want to thank my teammates and my coach Takesure Chiragwi; you are the best.
I also want to thank my wives who are here with me. I love you so much, guys. They have been very supportive throughout.
</blockquote>
According to a report by <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/qadr-rules-the-roost/">The Herald</a>, Amini pocketed US$7 500 for winning the Soccer Star of the Year award.
Dynamos midfielder Donald Mudadi, who finished as the first runner-up, received US$4 500, and Bulawayo Chiefs striker Obriel Chirinda who was the second runner-up, received US$3 750.
Ngezi Platinum Stars coach Takesure Chiragwi received the Coach of the Year award, for the first time.
Takunda Benhura won the Top Goal Scorer award after scoring 13 goals in his first full season. He received US$6 375.
Ngezi Platinum Stars were also presented with the league trophy by Guest of Honour, the Deputy Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Emily Jesaya.
For the second year running, they were also named the Most Disciplined Team of the Year.
The club had three players on the 2023 PSL calendar, with goalkeeper Nelson Chadya and 22-year-old forward Takunda Benhura also joining Soccer Star Amini on the podium.
Highlanders goalkeeper Ariel Sibanda won the Goalkeeper of the Year award for his 19 clean sheets.
Dynamos youngster Elton Chikona was voted the Most Promising Player of the Year.
Herentals forward Tinotenda Benza, for the second year running was the Fans’ favourite.
Brighton Chimene won the Referee of the Year for the third time, having previously won it in 2016 and 2019.

Qadr Amini Crowned 2023 PSL Soccer Star Of The Year

The Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) has announced eleven Soccer Star of the Year 2023 finalists as voted for by the coaches, captains and media selectors. The shortlisted players are:

There are people who strongly disagree with the selection of Tino Benza as one of the best 11 players of the season. They believe he didn’t deserve it and question whether coaches and journalists were bribed to vote for him. Tino Benza is a young Zimbabwean footballer who plays for Herentals Football Club, where his father is the owner and player. Tino’s father Innocent Benza is a Member of Parliament (MP) for Mutasa Central representing ZANU PF.
Some football fans feel that Tino Benza did not play well and suggest that Chinyengetere should have been selected instead. Some are expressing their doubts about whether those who voted for Benza actually watched the matches this season. Said one commentator:

ZIFA has released the following statement explaining the infamous substitution of Qadr Amini 149 seconds after kick-off in Cameroon yesterday. The Warriors were playing Mali last night when the historic substitution happened.
According to ZIFA Amini was substituted on medical grounds as the board noticed that he was playing despite his medical condition that had been picked during an MRI test:
<blockquote>ZIFA EXPLANATION REGARDING THE PARTICIPATION OF PLAYER QADR AMINI IN THE AFRICAN NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIP (CHAN) TOURNAMENT, CAMEROON 2021 
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has noted media inquiries regarding the substitution of Qadr Amini in the third minute of Zimbabwe’s match against Mali at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) finals in Doula, Cameroon yesterday (Sunday 24 January 2021).
ZIFA would like to categorically state that in line with CAF’s medical guidelines, there was a test that we were supposed to conduct on all players who had recently recovered from COVID- 19 called Cardiac MRI test.
Our medical team checked among radiology centres in the country and there was none in Zimbabwe conducting such a test.
ZIFA wrote to CAF to arrange and facilitate that the affected CHAN players be tested in Cameroon. All the affected players were tested upon arrival in Yaounde and the Board was notified prior to the commencement of the tournament that the player was not fit to play due to heart complications. A decision was made not to field the player until the recovery of the player and subsequent retests. The Board was shocked to see the player in the starting line-up without the player having undergone another test.
The technical and medical teams were engaged and could not give a convincing explanation on why the player was included. The Board then made a decision to order the technical team not to use the player until a retest had been conducted. The decision was made in the interest of the player’s health. 
The Board played its oversight role to protect the player from potential permanent harm that may have included death as well as to safeguard the reputation of the game of football.
The insinuations in some media platforms that such was interference with team selection therefore has no basis.
The ZIFA Board has set a commission of inquiry made up of experts to understand what exactly took place and whether it was proper to field the player.
ZIFA urges the public and media to respect the privacy of the health status of the player and we wish the player a quick recovery.
