Bulawayo police are investigating an attempted murder case after a man was shot in the stomach by someone seeking a room to rent in Pumula.
The victim, Nhlanhla Nkomo, 45, had informed the visitor that there was no vacant room available.
According to Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube, the incident occurred around 7 pm on Tuesday. Ncube said in a statement:

The accused asked the complainant for a room and the complainant told him there was no room to rent. The accused person then asked the complainant if he knew where he can get a room to rent and the complainant replied him that he had no idea.
The accused person was infuriated and pulled out a pistol from his trousers pocket, pointed at the complainant stomach, and fired one round and shot the complainant once the right side of the stomach.
The complainant screamed for help and the accused person fled away into the darkness.

The victim sustained a stomach bruise, and a spent 7.6mm cartridge was found at the scene by the police.
Firearm crimes, including armed robberies and violent attacks, became a significant concern in Zimbabwe since 2018. Firearms are often smuggled illegally, leading to inconsistent implementation and enforcement of gun laws. The government last year initiated programs to encourage the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/08/08/ed-grants-presidential-amnesty-on-voluntary-surrender-of-firearms-and-ammunitions/">voluntary surrender of illegal firearms</a>.
While about <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/09/30/police-say-over-540-firearms-voluntarily-surrendered-as-the-firearms-amnesty-ends/">450 firearms were voluntarily surrendered,</a> cases of crimes involving firearms are still high which means more guns are still in the wrong hands.

Home-seeker Shoots Owner After Being Told There's No Room To Rent

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has warned members of the public against abuse of firearms to settle scores or threaten others during disputes after a motorist drew a gun and threatened to shoot a fellow driver for stopping in the middle of the road.
A police report seen by Pindula News says the incident happened in Mufakose, Harare. Read the report:

On 27/11/22, Police in Harare received a report of pointing a firearm in which a motorist only identified as Mapondera, pointed an unidentified pistol at the victim before threatening to shoot him.
The victim had stopped the vehicle he was driving in the middle of the road to greet a friend along Mutondo Road, Mufakose.

Reports of abuse of firearms in Zimbabwe have been increasing in recent years to the extent that ZRP contemplated raiding targeted homes and business premises in search of illegally held firearms.
President mmerson Mnangagwa even declared a 53-day amnesty in August on all illegal gun owners to voluntarily surrender their weapons without any prosecution. Some paid heed to the call and surrendered their firearms while some ignored it.

Motorist Threatens To Shoot Fellow Driver For Stopping In The Middle Of The Road

A 25-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday in Harare Central Business District (CBD) after he was found selling a firearm. A police report seen by Pindula News says the police got a tip-off that Tanaka Rujuwa was in possession of a gun. Reads the police report:

On 05/10/22, Police in Harare swiftly reacted to a tip-off and arrested Tanaka Rujuwa (25) at Markert Square Bus Terminus for possession of an unregistered Plainsman 175 Pistol and a Mossberg round. The suspect was arrested while selling the firearm for US$1 500.

The arrest comes a week after the expiry of the <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/ed-grants-presidential-amnesty-on-voluntary-surrender-of-firearms-and-ammunitions/">Presidential Amnesty on Voluntary Surrender of Firearms and compliance with the police verification exercise.</a>
545 firearms were surrendered as of 29 September 2022 under the amnesty.
Amnesty was announced against the backdrop of an increase in crimes such as armed robberies and other forms of crimes of passion. 
Illegal possession of firearms is a violation of section 4(4)(b) of the Firearms Act and may attract a jail sentence of about 24 months, depending on the circumstances.

Man Arrested In Harare CBD After Being Found Selling A Gun

A suspected robber died in a shootout with <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Republic_Police">Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)</a> officers at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Birchenough_Bridge">Birchenough Bridge</a> Business Centre on Saturday 01 October 2022.
A police statement seen by Pindula News says the gang was comprised of seven (7) armed suspects. Reads the report:

The ZRP confirms a shooting incident which occurred on 01/10/22 at around 2000 hours at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Birchenough_Bridge">Birchenough Bridge</a> Business Centre and the subsequent arrest of seven suspects and the death of another suspect in a conspiracy to commit an armed robbery.

Cases of armed robberies have continued to rise countrywide despite President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/ed-grants-presidential-amnesty-on-voluntary-surrender-of-firearms-and-ammunitions/">presidential amnesty on voluntary surrender of firearms and ammunition</a> without any prosecution.
Police say a total of 545 firearms and 260 rounds of ammunition were voluntarily surrendered to the Police throughout the country on the operation, “Firearms Amnesty,” as of 29 September 2022 when the amnesty came to an end. 
Nevertheless, crimes such as armed robberies and other forms of crimes of passion continue to be reported in Zimbabwe. 
Meanwhile, police are set to raid targeted homes and business premises in search of illegally held firearms commonly linked to rampant violent crimes involving the use of dangerous weapons in the country.
This follows the Friday expiry of the 53-day amnesty declared in August by President Mnangagwa.
