President Emmerson Mnangagwa officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for a new 720MW coal thermal power plant, developed by Titan New Energy in partnership with ZESA Holdings in Hwange.
According to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/president-launches-us1bn-energy-plant/">The Herald</a>, Titan Energy has invested US$1 billion in the 720MW Phase 1 project, along with plans for an additional 200MW solar plant to be constructed in Gweru as part of Phase 2.
Construction is set to begin immediately, with some units expected to be operational by the end of next year.
The Hwange power station will utilise lower-quality coal from mining operations that would otherwise go to waste.
In his keynote address at the event on Monday, November 02, Mnangagwa said that electricity is essential for industrialization and plays a critical role in sectors such as mining, agriculture, and manufacturing. He said:

The Titan Thermal Power Plant being embarked upon will see the remarkable generation of 720MW, whilst Afrochine will contribute 100MW through a solar PV project in Selous.
Furthermore, the same investors from Titan will undertake the Jinan 200MW solar power plant in Gweru. These projects are expected to be completed by December 2025.

Mnangagwa said local communities in Hwange, Chivhu, and Selous should benefit more from investment projects by creating jobs, stimulating economic activity, and facilitating skills transfer and development.
He urged investors to fully integrate environmental, social, and governance considerations into their projects, promoting a comprehensive approach to development.
The President also condemned the vandalism of electricity infrastructure and called for swift action against those responsible.
The new 720MW project is part of the agreements reached during President Mnangagwa’s recent visit to China for the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit in Beijing.

Titan New Energy Partners With ZESA For 920MW Power Plants

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to officiate the groundbreaking ceremony for a new power station in Hwange, where a plant capable of generating over 700MW of electricity will be constructed.
The 720MW project is a partnership between Titan New Energy and ZESA Holdings, and Mnangagwa is scheduled to lead the ceremony on Monday, December 2, at Tutu Ingagula, located along Chaba Black Road in Hwange.
In an interview with the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/700mw-power-station-for-matabeleland-north/">Chronicle</a> earlier this week, Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Richard Moyo said that the project is one of the major agreements secured by President Mnangagwa during his recent visit to China. Said Moyo:

Titan is working in Hwange and has made a joint venture with a company in China after being invited by the President to explore investment opportunities in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe is one of the countries that signed investment agreements, and they plan to build an electricity power station that will generate 900MW, plus a 200MW solar system.
This will be a mega station, bigger than Units 7 and 8, and we thank President Mnangagwa for being open for business and inviting investors into Zimbabwe.
We are excited as a province because this creates jobs for our people and boosts the provincial economy.

The construction of the new power plant in Hwange will boost Zimbabwe’s power generation capacity, reducing the country’s reliance on imports and helping to alleviate the ongoing challenges of load-shedding.
This development is expected to provide much-needed relief to households, businesses, and industries that have been grappling with frequent power outages.
Hwange, which hosts some of Zimbabwe’s largest coal reserves, is also home to the country’s biggest power plant.
The Hwange Colliery Company, which operates the region’s oldest coal mine, has proven reserves estimated to last over 1,000 years at the current production rate.

The Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) says it is at various stages of repairing four units at Hwange Power Station after a series of breakdowns in recent days.
The breakdowns at the thermal power plant, which is the country’s second-biggest plant, literally plunged the country deeper into darkness as it is now operating at just 10 percent of its 920 megawatts capacity.
According to a general supply summary report produced by ZPC, between February 15 and 23 this year, four units at the Hwange thermal power plant were switched off, leaving the plant operating with one.
ZESA spokesperson George Manyaya promised to provide comment to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zpc-attends-to-faults-at-hwange-power-plant/">The Herald</a> after “getting a status update from the technical team” on Tuesday, but he had not done so by the time of publishing.
According to ZPC, a unit of ZESA Holdings responsible for generating electricity, Unit 4 was switched off on 15 February after developing a boiler tube leak.
Unit 1 was taken off on February 24 after a high-pressure fan got damaged.
Unit 3 was stopped on February 24 after developing a tube leak while Unit 6 was switched off on February 23 after developing a similar problem.
The damaged units are at various stages of being repaired, said ZPC. Unit 5 tripped in October 2021 due to excessive turbine vibrations.
On Wednesday, 01 March 2023, Kariba hydroelectric plant was generating 280MW.
Kariba’s Unit 4 was taken out on July 20 2022 due to a damaged turbine runner.
Generator 1 was switched off on February 2 2023 for turbine runner inspection. The inspections have been completed and the unit has been placed on annual maintenance.
Unit 8 tripped on 20 December 2022 due to GTx 8 fault and is being replaced.
Unit 6 was taken out on December 16 2022 for an annual overhaul and machine cooling water pipework replacement. Kariba dam level has slightly improved to 13,75 percent.
Meanwhile, Hwange was generating only 72MW this Wednesday while the small power stations, Munyati and Bulawayo are currently switched off for boiler maintenance.
Zimbabwe is importing 50MW from Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa; 180MW from Eskom, between 130-200MW from Electricidade de Moçambique and 1 00MW from Zambia’s state-owned power utility ZESCO.
The country is exporting up to 80MW to Namibia.

Several Units At Hwange Power Station Break Down

Zesa Holdings subsidiary, the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) is reported to have shut down the Bulawayo and Munyati Power Stations. The two power stations have currently been deemed surplus to requirements as there is an oversupply of electricity. However, Zimbabwe’s three power stations which are currently in operation, Hwange, Kariba and Harare are producing just over 1216 MW which is still a shortfall as Zimbabwe needs at least 1450 MW. This means that the difference is being met through imports from South Africa and Mocambique.
The two power stations which have been offline for the past two weeks can generate 190 MW, and lessen the amount of foreign currency needed to pay for imports.
