Energy and Power Development minister, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Soda_Zhemu">Soda Zhemu</a>, has said Zimbabwe’s power situation is set to improve at the end of March when an additional 300 megawatts of power are obtained from the refurbished Hwange Unit 7.
Responding to questions in the National Assembly last Wednesday Minister Zhemu said:

We are getting a capacity of around 170 megawatts from South Africa and the contract still subsists despite the power supply situation that is in South Africa. We are still able to obtain power from South Africa. As for the mitigation measures that the Government of Zimbabwe has put in place in the event that South Africa one day gets to a situation where they will not be able to give us power, already the expansion of Hwange Power Station will give additional power supply of around 600 megawatts from Unit 7 and 8. I indicated the readiness of Unit 7 from which we will be getting 300 megawatts before end of this month (March) and another unit will be following after a month to give us a total of 600 megawatts being fed into the grid.

He said there are plans to rehabilitate the existing units at Hwange Power Station, that is, Units 1 to 6 to get them back to the installed capacity of 920 megawatts.
The Hwange units are generating a combined 387 megawatts coming from Hwange Power Station.
Acting Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) Managing Director Engineer Howard Choga is on record as saying the country’s electricity consumption is at 1 850 megawatts.
Analysts say due to constant breakdowns at Zimbabwe’s largest coal-fired power station, which has seen output falling to less than 9 per cent of its designed capacity of 920MW in recent days, there is little hope that units 7 and 8 will change anything.

Energy Minister Says Power Situation To Improve End Of March

Numerous businesses battling to survive owing to an electricity crisis that caused the Workington neighbourhood of Harare to endure almost a month without power have laid off hundreds of workers.
Companies have been using generators since December 28 when one of power utility ZESA’s sub-power stations blew up.
The retrenchments are meant to cut down on wage bills.
Owner of Wood Take Alan Dreyer told NewZimbabwe that some companies were eager to pay their remaining employees even though they had not been productive for the entire month. Said Dreyer:

I have about 30 employees and the same number at my sister company. There has not been any power since we opened this year but I assure you they will be expecting their salaries at the end of the month despite the situation.
If only we could get communication as to when ZESA expects to reconnect us for planning purposes.

According to NewZimbabwe, the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) does not have all components needed to fix the station.
The components can be found in South Africa but have not yet been ordered.
The location under question is home to one of Harare’s largest sugar refineries, as well as mills for wheat and maize.
A power crisis in Zimbabwe has been going on for months, leaving the majority of the country without electricity for up to 18 hours daily. <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/severe-load-shedding-looms-as-zra-tells-zesa-to-shut-down-kariba-power-station/">Depleting water levels</a> at the Kariba Hydropower facility are blamed for power outages.
Due to the site’s outdated equipment, Hwange Thermal Power Station’s contributions have been unreliable. 
Hwange Thermal Power Station’s Unit 7 could not be added to the national grid as promised late last year, according to recent comments made by Energy Minister Zhemu Soda. He said there were some challenges.

Power Crisis: Hundreds Of Workers Laid Off As Companies Try To Survive

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Elisabeth_Valerio">Elisabeth Valerio</a>, a politician and businessperson who founded the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/index.php?title=United_Zimbabwe_Alliance&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1" title="United Zimbabwe Alliance (page does not exist)">United Zimbabwe Alliance</a> (UZA) party has said the current power crisis could be resolved if political elites were not choosing the “blame game.”
Valerio who is a presidential aspirant urged the government to invest in clean and safe energy. In Twitter posts seen by Pindula News, Valerio said:

It’s sad that political elites have chosen to play the blame game at a time when the nation needs working solutions to redress the #ZESAwoes! #VoteForChangeZW Energy minister Zhemu Soda attributes the current electricity crisis to the wheat bumper harvest alleging that most of #Kariba Dam’s water allocations were used during the winter wheat cropping season.

Zimbabwe has a huge power deficit as it is generating about a quarter of the required electricity. 
The southern African country is generating about 500MW against a peak demand of 2 200MW.
Authorities attribute the crisis to ageing power generators, declining levels of water in Kariba Dam, and reduced imports.

Zimbabwe Power Crisis: Presidential Aspirant Says "Political Elites Chose Blame Game"

South Africa’s power utility, Eskom, has escalated load-shedding to level 5 citing faults at power generation plants.
In a statement seen by Pindula News, Eskom said load-shedding will be at level 5 until further notice. Reads the statement:

 Due to unusually high demand and the breakdown of a generating unit each at Hendrina, Kendal and Kriel power stations, loadshedding has unfortunately been escalated to Stage 5 until further notice.
 Koeberg Unit 1 has been taken offline this morning for planned refuelling and routine maintenance. Eskom will give a full update in due course.

South Africa’s energy grid experienced a notable collapse in generating capacity in mid-September 2022 that resulted in up to half of Eskom’s generating capacity being lost.
Resultantly, Eskom which produces about 95% of the country’s electricity, is implementing scheduled, rolling blackouts in an attempt to save electricity while struggling to keep its ageing and poorly maintained coal-fired power stations operational.
With South Africa’s economy already struggling to rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic, economists have given stark warnings on the effect of the blackouts.
It has been estimated that load shedding has led to the economy losing R500 billion (just over $28 billion) since 2018, working out to about R1 billion per stage, per day. The crisis has a trickle-down effect on Zimbabwe which imports electricity from South Africa.

South Africa: Eskom Escalates Load-shedding To Stage 5 Until Further Notice, Cites Faults

Government has prevented a potential electricity crisis by issuing a R500 million ($35 million) guarantee to South Africa’s power utility, Eskom to back up power imports from the neighbouring country. Eskom, which supplies <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Electricity_Supply_Authority_Holdings">Zesa Holdings</a> with 300 megawatts, recently wrote to the power utility threatening to cut supplies over a $12 million debt.
Sources interviewed by The Chronicle yesterday said the guarantee to Eskom was issued last week,
<blockquote>A looming disaster has been averted, but that does not mean Zesa has to relax because still the debt has to cleared. In the event that Zesa fails to pay, Eskom will simply call up the guarantee and Government will have to pay the money. This is a burden if Zesa does not pay up. Because in the national budget, that guarantee is not factored in, it means something budgeted for will have to suffer. Legally, Government is saying I am standing behind Zesa.</blockquote>
Zesa also owes Mozambique’s Hydro Cahora Bassa $10 million. Zesa chief executive Engineer Josh Chifamba yesterday declined to comment on the guarantee, referring questions to the Ministry of Energy and Power Development. He, however, said the power utility was putting in place measures to avoid load shedding,
<blockquote>We are working hard to ensure there won’t be any load shedding. We are going to be talking this coming week with our customers who are into exports with a view to see if they can give us part of their allocation such that we have foreign currency and are able to pay for power imports.</blockquote>
