The Zimbabwe Banks and Allied Workers Union (ZIBAWU) on Tuesday, September 3, said that it is challenging the alleged sexual harassment and subsequent dismissal of a female employee by the People’s Own Savings Bank (POSB).
In a statement, ZIBAWU revealed that the unnamed employee was terminated after she rejected sexual advances from a senior executive.
The union also shared a screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation between the POSB manager and the employee, in which the manager solicited sexual favours. ZIBAWU said:

This is not fiction. It happened. The worker then lost her job and the executive was promoted. We have done all we can to make sure that POSB management and board deal with such extreme forms of sexual harassment of junior staff by senior executives. We are fighting back now…
Today we ask Israel Ndhlovu .The POSB Board Chairman If he is aware of this matter and what steps his esteemed Board has taken to address this grave injustice. If no steps have been taken or are being taken is this acceptable in POSB? We demand JUSTICE!

According to Mywage.org, the Labour Act prohibits sexual harassment in the workplace. Sexual harassment is considered one of the “unfair labour practices” and an employer can be held liable for civil remedies only.
It says the Labour Act strictly prohibits asking for sexual favours for the recruitment for employment; or the creation, classification or abolition of jobs or posts; or the improvement of the remuneration or other conditions of employment of the employee; or the choice of persons for jobs or posts, training, advancement, apprenticeships, transfer, promotion or retrenchment; or the provision of facilities related to or connected with employment; or any other matter relating to employment.

ZIBAWU is upset with POSB for firing a female worker who refused a senior executive's sexual advances. They shared proof of the harassment. ZIBAWU Challenges POSB Over Alleged Sexual Harassment And Unfair Dismissal Of Female Employee

Workers at People’s Own Savings Bank (POSB) are on strike over poor remuneration, with reports claiming that each worker takes home between ZWL$2 000 – ZWL$3 000 per month.
In US dollar terms, this is less than $40 and the situation has left the workers disillusioned as they can no longer afford the basics such as food and rent.
The Zimbabwe Banks and Allied Workers Union (ZIBAWU) confirmed the strike action by POSB employees. It said:
<blockquote>POSB workers are on strike from today and customers are stranded in long queues they are among the worst remunerated and are now failing to pay rentals, buy food and other necessities.
Dear POSB customers, we regret to announce that workers are on strike as you can see branches are not yet opened.
Workers would love to serve you as always but management is refusing to give workers a fair deal.</blockquote>
Workers across various sectors have downed down over the past few weeks, notably, those in the health sector who are demanding US dollar salaries and adequate personal protective equipment (PPEs.

POSB Employees Down Tools

Bank workers have bemoaned the erosion of their salaries and have, as a result, declared incapacitation. A letter dated 20 June 2019 and written by POSB workers to their management reveals the shocking state of affairs obtaining with bank employees.
Reports indicate that the problem has affected workers at most of the banks and there is a high likelihood of other banks following the POSB employees’ decision.
Below is the full text of the letter written by POSB employees.
<blockquote>We write to advise you of the dire situation that your workers are in. You are fully aware of the economic crisis we are in. Most of the employees are now unable to buy food enough for a week from their salaries let alone paying rent and rates risking the possibility of evictions.
The majority are failing not only to meet committed school fees payment plans for their children, but the situation is being further worsened by the top up requests in foreign currency. Other basic necessities are now beyond the reach of many.
In addition, the majority are no longer able to pay for transport to and from work. Those able are not able to buy lunch and in most days work without eating anything. The majority of the families of your workers are now living on one meal a day.
The situation is now unbearable. We, therefore, advise that from now POSB workers will report for duty as and when they have transport fares and or breakfast and lunch.
Alternatively, most of your workers will start sleeping and staying at the workplace from Mondays to Saturdays in order not to abscond from work.
We hope you find this in order. Please note that this is not collective job action but a measured response to the challenges your workers are facing.</blockquote>

POSB general manager in charge of finance Patience Shuro was asked to step down at the expiry of a 6-month renewal the board had offered her after her inital 5-year contract had expired. This follows POSB’s failure to note that it had been prejudiced of well over $8,2 million plus interest by ZimPost. This comes after Zimpost failed to remit the excess of deposits over withdrawals, totalling $8 226 155,65, since 2009. POSB won an arbitration to recover the funds from ZZimpost last year after they discovered the anomaly.
<blockquote>Grant Thornton did the audit but the details are yet to be made public. Ms Shuro’s five-year contract expired but the board decided to renew it by only six months. She then offered to serve her three month notice but the HR committee told her to leave. There is a strong belief among board that as the head of finance, she was supposed to detect the problem early.</blockquote>
