Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals has reportedly performed 41 successful heart surgeries in 2024, the highest number of such operations conducted in a single year since 2016.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/record-heart-surgeries-at-parirenyatwa">The Sunday Mail</a>, Terence Mautsi, the public relations officer for the hospital group, said that they aim to increase this number to between 100 and 150 in 2025. Said Mautsi:

Open-heart surgery has progressed this year. We have performed 41 surgeries in total. This is important, being the highest number performed per year in comparison to other years since 2016 and we are planning to double the number next year, resources permitting.
The aim is for the unit to become a fully fledged one, which is able to fulfil national obligations, including teaching specialists, and this can only be possible by increasing the number of procedures done at the hospital.
The hospital is aiming at having a 10-bed cardiothoracic ICU (intensive care unit) and HDU (high dependency unit); this will allow smooth functioning and we are engaged with at least three cardiothoracic units to train percussionists.
</blockquote>
Mautsi said they were unable to meet their target due to occasional shortages of essential consumables. He said:
<blockquote>
The ideal number of patients to keep a single cardiothoracic surgeon competent, of 150 per year, has not been reached.
There are many factors which contributed to us not reaching the target. There are times when we ran out of consumables and it took a long to procure due to the process involved. We had instances where the resources were available but patients failed to turn up due to fear.
The patients need to be admitted into ICU after the procedure; unfortunately, we have one general ICU for the whole hospital.
We should have an independent ICU for cardiothoracic surgery; this will allow us to function more effectively.
</blockquote>
Mautsi said that there are currently 200 patients on the Parirenyatwa waiting list, with the waiting period being six for those who agree to undergo surgery.
In addition to the 41 successful heart surgeries, two patients unfortunately lost their lives due to postoperative complications. He said:

One patient developed an infection and succumbed almost two weeks after surgery and the other patient was bleeding postoperatively and unfortunately we were unable to secure the relevant blood products due to shortages.
We aim to do at least 100 to 150 next year. We are engaging with the Ministry of Health and Child Care as our parent ministry, the hospital administration, sister hospitals, local industries and NGOs (non-governmental organisations) to reach our target.
Surgical camps allow us to do more patients; the last camp we did 10 patients in a week, so we are planning to do more camps. We are engaged with other units in Africa to get personal training as percussionists.

Mautsi added that 12 children underwent successful surgeries this year, with 11 of the patients diagnosed with congenital heart disease and one suffering from rheumatic heart disease.

A man who was admitted to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals following a road traffic accident has been located by his relatives after the hospital made a public appeal for assistance in identifying him.
In an earlier statement, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals said that the man was brought to the hospital by the police but was found without any identification.
Due to his injuries, he is suffering from memory loss, leaving him unable to recall any details about himself or the accident.
In a subsequent statement issued on Thursday, November 28, the hospital confirmed that they had located the man’s relatives following the public appeal. Reads the statement:

A man got hurt in a car accident and went to the hospital. He couldn't remember who he was. The hospital asked for help to find his family. After people helped search, the man's relatives were found. The hospital thanked everyone for their help. The man will now be able to reunite with his family.

Memory-Loss Accident Victim's Relatives Found

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals has appealed to the public for help in identifying a patient who was involved in a car accident and brought to the facility by the police.
In a statement, the hospital said that the patient was found without any identification and is currently suffering from memory loss, which has left him unable to recall any details about himself or the accident. Reads the statement:

The patient was brought in by Police Officers after being involved in a car accident. The patient is suffering from memory loss and has no identification particulars with him.

Parirenyatwa Hospital Appeals For Assistance In Identifying Car Accident Victim

The Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, Zimbabwe’s largest medical facility, is reportedly facing a severe shortage of essential drugs and medical equipment, putting millions of lives at risk as most patients cannot afford private medical care.
Many patients at the hospital are often forced to wait in long queues, only to be directed to purchase the necessary medicines from private pharmacies, as the hospital struggles to provide these essential items.
The Independent reported inside sources as saying the hospital is struggling to supply basic items such as gloves, syringes, and other critical equipment.
The hospital authorities have reportedly warned the staff against divulging any information about the ongoing crisis, further exacerbating the challenges faced by both patients and healthcare workers. Said a source who preferred anonymity:

It has become a nightmare for us as staff at Parirenyatwa. There are serious shortages of medication, needles, syringes, cotton, alcohol (medicinal), methylated spirit, sodium hypochlorite, and sometimes even latex gloves and stationery.
For example, the lift linking the ground floor to the third floor is frequently out of order, forcing us to carry patients up the ramp. It is torture. The lift gets fixed but only works for a few days.
Authorities have warned us not to speak out, but remaining silent affects our patients, who come with various illnesses.

Parirenyatwa Hospital’s public relations manager, Terrence Mautsi, admitted there were shortages but attributed them to erratic supplies. Said Mautsi:

Indeed, we have been having erratic supplies due to shortages from our suppliers.
This is a national problem affecting all public hospitals in the country. As the largest referral centre, Parirenyatwa is the most affected because we offer the widest spectrum of specialist services in the country.
That being said, we continue to provide services, with patients being given prescriptions for medicines and supplies that are in short supply after being seen by our doctors.

Over the years, Zimbabwe’s health sector has faced significant challenges, including the departure of medical personnel to other countries where the pay and working conditions may be more favourable.
Preferred destinations include Britain, Canada, the United States, and South Africa.
Broader economic factors, such as the rising cost of living, high unemployment, stagnant salaries, currency instability, and shortages of foreign currency and basic commodities like electricity and water, have created difficulties for many Zimbabweans.

The big hospital in Zimbabwe, Parirenyatwa, doesn't have enough medicine and equipment to help sick people. Patients have to wait in long lines and then go buy medicine from private stores. Parirenyatwa Faces Critical Shortage Of Essential Drugs, Equipment

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals (PGH) says it has always made efforts to safeguard the public from unscrupulous people who masquerade as its employees with malicious intentions to fleece unsuspecting members of the public.
This comes after three people were arrested at the hospital for impersonating doctors this month.
In a statement, PGH said that in 2023 alone, 33 offenders were picked up by its Security Department, while this year from January 2024 to date, 11 suspects have been nabbed. The hospital said:

Bogus Doctors, bogus tutors who extort prospective student nurses and thieves who steal from both staff members and patients are some of those criminals who have been picked up and handed over to the police.
Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals is a vast institution with close to 400 Doctors of all professional levels and a total staff establishment of close to 4000.
Unscrupulous people take advantage of our vastness and complexity to carry out nefarious activities. 
Fortunately, our Surveillance Teams remain vigilant and have always apprehended these unruly elements who try to penetrate and abuse our systems.
</blockquote>
PGH said investigations it has carried out so far have established that the 3 recently arrested fake Doctors did not manage any patient.
It vowed that surveillance teams shall continue to flush out criminals bent on abusing public trust in the institution.
The three fake doctors who were arrested at the hospital in April 2024 are Andrew Mapulanga (52), Blessing Nyanzira (24), and Douglas Garikayi Mutoredzanwa.
Mapulanga was caught by an alert security officer at Parirenyatwa Hospital on 15 April. His arrest followed the discovery of articles intended for criminal use.
Mutoredzanwa was arrested on 23 April after his bizarre behaviour revealed that he was bogus. It is alleged that while analyzing an X-ray in front of a patient, he held it upside down. His arrest at Parirenyatwa Hospital revealed an outstanding warrant related to a 2019 case.
Nyanzira was arrested on 25 April as he attempted to bypass a staff security checkpoint during the lunch hour break.
All three men appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court and their cases are yet to be finalised.

11 Fake Doctors Arrested At Parirenyatwa Hospital

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare says it is opening a new unit that will cater for patients with acute respiratory illnesses and relieve pressure on the hospital’s already existing intensive care and high-dependency care units.
The unit currently has eight beds which are expected to be expanded in due course.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/major-health-boost-as-pari-opens-new-high-dependency-unit/">The Herald</a>, pulmonologist and head of the respiratory unit at Parirenyatwa Hospital Dr Felix Manyeruke said the ward mainly deals with respiratory diseases. He said:
<blockquote>
We are opening up what is called a medical HDU and it has been operational for the past four months.
This is a 30-bed unit and we started with eight beds. We are expanding gradually to cater for up to 16 patients.
Mainly we deal with respiratory diseases which include pneumonia, patients with respiratory distress, asthma, silicosis, lung diseases, post TB lung diseases among others.
Parirenyatwa was set up with an ICU and an HDU which caters for both general and surgical patients but what is limited is the number of beds available.
The eight medical beds we have opened are separate from the current units which are there. This is a closed HDU unit which offers care to medical patients only.
We have also been taking in obstetric patients who need oxygen therapy. This is an extension of the services which were already there.

The Hunan Province People’s Hospital in China has provided equipment and the expertise to train local doctors to perform new medical procedures in the ward.
Last week, the Minister of Health and Childcare, Douglas Mombeshora received a batch of medical equipment and consumables valued at US$500 000 from the Chinese Government to support the development of the respiratory care unit.
Manyeruke said under the partnership with Hunan Province People’s Hospital, Parirenyatwa had also received three bronchoscopy machines and an automatic bronchoscopy cleaner.
He said a team of Chinese doctors will be coming to Zimbabwe for a simulation lab where local doctors and technicians will be trained. Added Manyeruke:

Our Chinese partners have brought up lots of models that will be used to train our staff to do intubations and other medical procedures.
We are going to set up a centre here to train doctors on how to do these procedures. We received equipment for training so that we can train our staff…
The burden of respiratory illness in the country is high and asthma is the most common. In the world Zimbabwe is number 14 in terms of asthma deaths so most of these respiratory deaths occur at home.
This centre will offer health services for acutely ill patients but we also have an outpatient clinic, a general respiratory clinic and post-Covid care, post-TB lung disease as well as silicosis which affects artisanal miners.

Over the years, China has made numerous donations to Zimbabwe in various sectors such as infrastructure development, healthcare, and education.

Parirenyatwa Hospital Opens New High Dependency Unit

The Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals (PGH) in Zimbabwe says it is taking steps to address a recent water crisis and sewer blockage that affected the facility.
Reports on social media had suggested that the hospital had cancelled all elective theatre lists for all disciplines and specialities of surgery due to a lack of water, while patients at the Annex were reportedly discharged due to dysfunctional toilets caused by blocked sewer. However, the Head of public relations for PGH, Linos Dhire, confirmed that the situation was under control, with the hospital experiencing unexpected pipe bursts that affected a few areas of the hospital in terms of water availability and coincidental sewer blockage at their Mental Health Hospital. He said:

We have had an unexpected pipe burst which has affected a few areas of the hospital in terms of water availability. We also had a coincidental sewer blockage at our Mental Health Hospital.
Both issues will be sorted out this weekend as the needed materials have already been procured. In the meantime, emergencies have been prioritized as usual in theatres and Annexe. The rest of the mega Health Institution is functioning as usual.

Dhire added that normal service will soon be restored, and hospital authorities are working to return the situation to normalcy.

Parirenyatwa Hospital Speaks On Water Crisis, Sewer Blockage

A team of local doctors and specialists recently conducted two successful open-heart surgeries at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
The team comprised three cardiothoracic surgeons, six anesthetists, two perfusionists, three student doctors, six theatre nurses, two laboratory specialists and six other specialists.
Open heart surgery is an operation to repair a fault or damage in the heart and requires the surgeon to open the chest to access the heart.
<a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/two-open-heart-surgeries-at-parirenyatwa">The Sunday Mail</a> reported that 29-year-old Blessing Bonda, who suffered from a rheumatic heart condition, was the first to undergo a six-hour-long operation a fortnight ago.
Last week, the team performed a second operation on another patient, who chose to remain anonymous, in three-and-a-half hours.
The last open-heart surgery in Zimbabwe was conducted in October 2018 and since then, patients have had to travel to India, Italy and South Africa for the procedure.
Cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon Dr. Simukayi Machawira, who was part of the team of specialists, said that they will begin operating on at least one patient weekly.
An estimated 700 people are on the waiting list for open-heart surgeries in the country.
Parirenyatwa Hospital is the only hospital that provides open-heart surgeries in Zimbabwe.

Doctors Perform Two Open-heart Surgeries At Parirenyatwa Hospital

The man who was found dead in a vehicle abandoned on Monday morning just outside Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare was a suspected armed robber, reported <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/details-emerge-on-robber-found-dead-near-hospital/">The Herald</a>.
The unidentified man found dead was believed to have been part of a gang of armed robbers.
The man’s body had wounds on the chest and stomach and was lying on the back seat of the vehicle which was parked along Mazowe Street.
The vehicle was reportedly stolen in Parktown, Waterfalls, on Wednesday last week.
According to The Herald, the owner parked his car on Wednesday at around 10 PM before retiring to bed after locking all the doors.
At around 5.30 AM the next day he found his vehicle was missing and reported the theft to the police.
Police suspected that the vehicle was being used as a getaway car in other crimes.
The vehicle had a single registration number plate (ADW 5062) attached on the front and no rear plate.
Police recovered several cellphones, housebreaking equipment, a crowbar, a golf stick, beer bottles and electrical cables, among other goods and clothes in the vehicle.
Police believe the suspected armed robber might have been seriously injured while committing crimes in the company of his accomplices.
It is believed his accomplices probably left the vehicle near the hospital hoping that it would be discovered in time to give the man medical treatment.

"Man Found Dead In A Car Near Parirenyatwa Hospital Was A Robber"

A government survey has established that only 1% of students seeking to be enrolled in Zimbabwe’s medical schools get placed due to an acute shortage of training facilities, resulting in limited access to such training programmes.
This emerged during a workshop organised by Zimbabwe’s <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ministry_of_Health_and_Child_Care">Ministry of Health and Child Care</a> titled the ‘Health Labour Market Analysis to Inform Health Workforce Strategic Planning and a Sustainable Health Workforce’ held on 7 February.
Reads in part the survey report tabled at the workshop:

With 397,185 applicants [queuing] for admission in the 2021 academic year, only 4,134 of the prospective health professions students were offered places – 1% of applicants got places to train.
There were an average of 89 applicants competing for every available seat for admission in 2021 – highly competitive. There is a capacity to train 4,476 health workers per year (theoretical capacity). Of the capacity, the production has been 3,334 per year (75% of the theoretical capacity).

The report said there is an average course completion rate of 80.6% for health or medical-related courses and a dropout rate of 19.4%. A total of 90% of those who complete their training obtain their professional qualifications and licences to practise.
The report also said 700 to 800 nurses are trained per year as well as 200 to 220 doctors, 90 to 110 pharmacists per year and between 27 and 31 laboratory scientists each year.
It said 34% of the registered trained health workers are not active and they have mostly emigrated, retired or changed jobs, <a href="https://www.universityworldnews.com/post.php?story=20230208112719437">University World News</a> reported.
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Council_for_Higher_Education">Zimbabwe Council of Higher Education (ZIMCHE)</a> chief director of health and life sciences, Professor Felicity Gumbo, said some of the qualifications obtained outside Zimbabwe do not match local standards, hence students end up stranded or spend up to two years writing local examinations to be able to use their degrees.
The reasons why some foreign qualifications are not recognised in Zimbabwe include that they lack practical training through internships and other work-based learning.
The report also said that there has been a growth in the number of doctors, nurses and midwives.
It was recommended that the private sector should be engaged to optimise expanded contributions to training and employment.
It was also recommended that there should be a collaboration between the ministry of higher and tertiary education to align training plans with the ministry of health in line with the projected needs based on disease burden.

"Only 1% Of Students Seeking Enrolment In Zimbabwe’s Medical Schools Get Placed" - Survey

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has announced the arrest of two suspects in connection with robberies which occurred in Harare between December 2022 and January this year.
In a statement seen by Pindula News, national police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said one of the suspects succumbed to gunshot wounds while admitted to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals. Reads the statement:

<h2>ARREST OF TWO SUSPECTS FOR ARMED ROBBERY CASES IN HARARE</h2>
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Alexio Mupamhura (29) and Deliverance Makomva (21) in connection with two armed robbery cases which occurred on 15th December 2022 and 07th February 2023 in Harare.
On 06th February 2023, detectives from CID Homicide, Harare, received some information which linked Alexio Mupamhura to a robbery case which occurred on 15th December 2022 at Prime Irrigation Company along ED Mnangagwa Road, Highlands, Harare where a security guard was attacked before a cellphone, 5 x 12 volts lithium batteries, eight solar panels, a 5KW Bluetooth generator and US$700 cash were stolen. 
The detectives acted upon the information and made a follow-up on the suspect, Alexio Mupamhura. On 07th February 2023 at around 0800 hours the suspect arrived at his residence along Chinhoyi Street, Zimre Park, Ruwa whilst driving a Toyota Wish vehicle, registration number, AFA 8576.
Upon seeing the detectives, the suspect sped off leading to a shoot-out and speed chase between the suspect and the detectives. The suspect drove into a maize field where he stopped the vehicle before fleeing while armed with an iron bar. Alexio Mupamhura was later arrested after falling on the ground and was found with gunshot wounds on the chest and leg. During interview by the Police, the suspect implicated Deliverance Makomva and five others who are at large. Alexio Mupamhura was referred to Parirenyatwa where he died on admission.
The arrest led to the recovery of the suspects’ getaway vehicle, a Nissan Caravan NV350, registration number AFY 9469, a pellet gun, five-bolt cutters, 2 x 14 pounce hammers, three crowbars, various clothes with price tags, four laptops, an HP desktop computer, two solar panels, 2 x 12 volts solar batteries, a lithium battery, three Samsung tablets, a solar light set, three invertors, 2 x 5-litre engine oil, eight pints of engine oil, a LED torch and a pinch bar.
Detectives later arrested Deliverance Makomva after he had contacted Alexio Mupamhura’s wife, Deliwe Makomva, to meet him at Mabvuku turn-off, along Harare-Mutare Road, where he wanted to give her unidentified property for safekeeping. Subsequently, detectives recovered various clothes with price tags and two lithium batteries from Deliverance Makomva.
The suspects were further linked to a robbery case which occurred on 07th February 2023 at business premises along Sam Nujoma Street, Harare where a security guard and his daughter were attacked before two cellphones, US$5 cash, a solar panel, a 48 volts solar battery, four Baofeng wireless communication radios and a laptop, were stolen.
Police are appealing for information which may lead to the arrest of the outstanding suspects, identified as Tendai Ruchiyo, alias Ti, Emmanuel Dylan Matiza, alias Big Dealer, Carlson Mabhonga and Lloyd Chinembiri.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police G appealing for information which may assist in the investigation of a robbery case which occurred on 070 February 2023 at a house along Shaneragh Road, Mandara Harare. Seven unknown suspects attacked a couple before stealing US$17 000 cash, a Ford Everest vehicle, registration number AFN 7615, a Mazda CX6 battery, three cellphones and three laptops.

FULL TEXT: Robbery Suspects Arrested, One Succumbs To Gunshot Wounds

Jacob Ngarivhume who leads the opposition Transform Zimbabwe has apologised for a Twitter post which claimed that his niece died after surgeons at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals mistakenly cut her intestines during a C-section.
His apology came after the medical institution had issued a statement dismissing the politician’s claims. Ngarivhume said:

I need to set the record straight. My remarks on the incident involving my late niece were misleading in that they the put the blame entirely on Pari. That was not my intention.
I was simply highlighting the challenges we are facing with our healthcare system, whether private or public. The doctors at Pari did the best they could under the circumstances but it was very evident they did not have the resources needed to save my niece’s life.
I’m grateful for all the messages that have poured in during this difficult time. And many people have used this opportunity to share their own experiences with our public institutions.
I am not ashamed to say I was wrong. My remarks should have been more clear for that I apologize to the hard-working men and women at Pari who do all they can to save lives under difficult circumstances.

His apology attracted backlash from commentators who accused him of deliberately lying to tarnish the image of the government.
In his initial Twitter post, Ngarivhume said:

For the past week I have been helping my sister look after her daughter. She passed on yesterday. She was 34. She died after going through a C-section operation to deliver her third baby at Pari. The doctors made a mistake and cut her intestines. She then developed an infection.
They took her for a second operation to correct the error this didn’t work. A 3rd procedure was planned to clean her up but sadly she suffered a cardiac arrest and died.
During her care she was put on an obsolete ventilator in the ICU at Pari. This country has gone to the dogs. 
Very sorry. Our healthcare system is under enormous pressures from a lack of resources, equipment, training. Sadly such stories will continue playing out until something changes.

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospital has dismissed a social media story which claimed that there is a female patient who died at the health institution after doctors mistakenly cut her intestines.
Social media reports suggested that the woman was operated on at Parirenyatwa but the institution says she came after an operation had been performed at a private institution in Harare. 
In a statement seen by Pindula News, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals said the woman died while health caregivers were trying to save her life. Reads the statement:

Parirenyatwa Responds To "Woman Dies After Pari Doctors Mistakenly Cut Intestines During C-Section"

Nurses at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals have said the medical institution is being rundown and people are normalising the rot.
Raw sewage flows unattended at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, NewZimbabwe reports. 
The publication also reports that the place smells due to “the filth, the countless number of dumpsites, strewn-about defunct equipment, fallen trees, damaged sports courts, falling and leaking ceilings in the wards.”
All these have been there for over three years, according to nurses who spoke to NewZimbabwe. One of the nurses is quoted as saying:

This place is now rundown and people have normalised it. Imagine, we talked to these people months ago but they did nothing. 
You would expect Parirenyatwa to be the smartest hospital in the country but when you get here all you see is old equipment in the corridors, rusty gutters and unattended dirt.”

Parirenyatwa hosts the country’s biggest nurse training school, housing over 5 000 beds, three major facilities that include the largest maternity hospital, 12 theatres and over a thousand health care providers.
The institution has three nurse training intakes for a three-year diploma, with all students staying within the hospital grounds.
It is the country’s largest referral hospital and, despite a shortage of equipment, personal protective clothing and medicines; the facility is still expected to serve tens of thousands daily from across the country.
In September this year, two patients undergoing treatment were injured after a ceiling fell on them during the examination. Government critics say the incident was just an example of Zimbabwe’s dilapidated health delivery infrastructure.
They blame the rot on negligent political elites who have over the years been going to South Africa, Singapore, Egypt and China for medical attention.

"Parirenyatwa Is Now Rundown And People Have Normalised It" - Nurses

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Harare_City_FC">Harare City FC</a> player Jerry Chipangura (24) has been jailed for 14 months for possessing 40g of methylenedioxymethamphetamine – commonly known as mutoriro.
Chipangura intended to sell in the city, <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/harare-city-player-jailed-for-mutoriro/">The Herald</a> reported.
He was jailed by Harare regional magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka.
<h2>What happened:</h2>
The court heard that on June 30 2022, at around 8 pm, police were informed that Chipangura was dealing in meth in Mabvuku, Harare.
Detectives went to New Mabvuku where they found him along John Tapedza Road.
The detectives identified themselves before searching him and found 40g of meth in a small Adidas black bag that he was carrying.
The drug was in two sachets.
Field tests on the drug carried out in his presence tested positive for meth.
Drug abuse has been on the rise in recent years to the extent that President Emmerson Mnangagwa had to <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/09/05/mnangagwa-appoints-task-force-to-deal-with-drug-abuse/">appoint a task force to hunt down drug peddlers.</a>
Most abused drugs include ganja cakes, a prohibited cough syrup called BronCleer (bronco), mbanje and illicit beers known as “musombodhiya” in street lingo.
Drug abuse has had severe effects on abusers’ health with some even dying.
A report released previously noted that <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Parirenyatwa_Group_of_Hospitals">Parirenyatwa Hospital</a> attends to about <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/09/25/psychiatric-units-overwhelmed-by-drug-abuse-linked-mental-health-cases/">800 mental health patients monthly with most of the ailments being related to drugs.</a>
Admission is only for those with serious illnesses that they cannot go back home while most of them are sent back home after treatment.
Most patients have complications arising from crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as “mutoriro”, “dombo” or “guka.”

Harare City FC Player Jailed For Selling Mutoriro

Doctors based at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, which is Zimbabwe’s largest referral hospital, have requested a meeting with authorities at the hospital over the deteriorating conditions.
In a letter addressed to the hospital’s chief executive officer Ernest Manyawu, the doctors said the hospital had no basic medicines, even for primary care. Part of the letter reads:

As healthcare practitioners, we spent innumerable years in school training to serve our people.
However, the critical lack of consumables in our hospital is rendering us ineffective as we can no longer deliver the services required at the tertiary hospital.
… We often run out of and lack basic sundries which should be available even at primary institutions.
To mention a few, there have been shortages or lack of yellow cannulas, 5ml and 10ml syringes, sterile gloves, betadine, cotton wool strapping, catheters, and urine bags.
Our U&amp;E machine (urea and electrolytes) is always down, the most common being no reagents, sometimes no water or it’s a mechanical issue.

In an interview with <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200004373/doctors-flag-pari-decline-as-on-call-doctors-sleep-in-cars">NewsDay</a> on Wednesday night, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals spokesperson Linos Dhire confirmed that authorities had received the letter. He said:

Doctors' Letter Exposes Deteriorating Conditions At Parirenyatwa Hospital

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals has threatened to conduct paupers’ burials for 32 bodies which have remained unclaimed at the health institution since March this year. 
A pauper’s funeral, also referred to as a Public Health Funeral, is a simple funeral paid for by the local council when the family of the deceased is unable to, or no family can be traced.
The hospital gave the next of kin 21 days to claim the bodies, saying they had clogged its mortuary facilities, NewsDay Zimbabwe reported citing a statement issued by the health institution. Reads the statement:

The hospital is requesting relatives or family members of the dearly deceased persons to come forward and claim the bodies and give them a decent burial.

The deceased are adults aged between 22 and 80 years.
Some of the deceased persons are said to have died at the hospital after being involved in road traffic accidents while others were found dead in different places and brought to the hospital by police.
In July this year, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals issued a similar statement saying twelve bodies were unclaimed since January this year.

Parirenyatwa Hospital Threatens A Pauper's Burial For 32 Unclaimed Bodies

Zimbabwe’s biggest referral hospital, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, has confirmed social media reports that a ceiling at the institution collapsed on Tuesday morning and injured two patients.
In a statement on Tuesday afternoon, the hospital said the two patients, who were receiving treatment in a ward, suffered minor injuries. It said:

We have come across social media reports of an accident in our hospital. We would like to confirm the occurrence of an unfortunate incident in the Physician’s Bay today (13/09/22) in the early hours of the morning.
A small part of the ceiling in one of the cubicles unexpectedly fell on two of the patients under observation in the cubicle. Both patients were immediately examined by our doctors.
They sustained minor injuries and got appropriate treatment. The patients were eventually discharged home following the completion of their initial observations.
We would like to unreservedly apologise to the affected patients and their families. The hospital has already started the process of repairing the ceiling.

Ceiling Collapses On Patients At Parirenyatwa Hospital

A picture of a makeshift wheelchair at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Parirenyatwa_Group_of_Hospitals">Parirenyatwa Hospital</a> has caused a commotion on social media with some saying the atmosphere at local hospitals was worsening the condition of patients.
Standard wheelchairs cost about R6 000, about US$366.50.
The pictures were shared by <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Hopewell_Chin%27ono">Hopewell Chin’ono</a>, an award-winning Zimbabwean journalist and documentary filmmaker who attributed the sore sight to the government’s failure to fund the health sector. Reads a post seen by Pindula News:

The pictures surface amid a controversy caused by remarks by South African medical doctor, Phophi Ramathuba, who told a bedridden Zimbabwean patient that <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/responses-to-dr-phophi-ramathubas-plans-to-bill-president-mnangagwa-for-zimbabwean-patients/">Zimbabweans ought to get treatment in their own country.</a>
Zimbabwe’s health sector has been collapsing in the last two decades with observers attributing the collapse to the looting of public funds by “heartless” politicians who have “nothing to lose” as they get medical attention abroad.

PICTURES: Makeshift Wheelchair At Parirenyatwa Cause Commotion On Social Media

Workers at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, Zimbabwe’s biggest referral hospital, have joined the growing list of government and state-funded institutions’ employees withdrawing their labour citing incapacitation.
On Wednesday, the workers wrote to the institution’s acting executive director Engelbart Mbengwa informing him that they were withdrawing their services with immediate effect. The letter, dated February 23, 2022 reads:

Reference is made to the above and subject that the health workers association having the negotiation space closed for almost a year have resolved to declare an incapacitation of its members.
Non-claimable health sector specific allowances as agreed in the CBA 2 of 2018 i.e. on call, call out /standby night duty, nurse managers and special health allowances have not been reviewed for two years now.
We need to remind the employer that these allowances are based on work done during odd hours with little compensation being offered to the employee. Uniforms allowance is now very negligible and cannot buy any soap or detergent.
</blockquote>
The employees also bemoaned the freezing of donor-funded nostro retention allowances a situation they said has heightened brain drain as there is little incentive to continue going for work in the health sector.
The workers said they are also not happy with their Covid-19 risk allowances which they said was last reviewed in 2020.
The health workers’ strike follows a similar move by teachers and universities workers who are also citing incapacitation.

Psychiatric units at Harare’s two major referral hospitals, Sally Mugabe Central Hospital and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, are overwhelmed by the rising number of mental health cases linked to drug and substance abuse.
Most patients have complications arising from crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as “mutoriro”, “dombo” or “guka.”
 Most abused drugs include ganja cakes, a prohibited cough syrup called BronCleer (bronco), mbanje and illicit beers known as “musombodhiya” in street lingo.
President Mnangagwa recently expressed concern over drug abuse in the country, and he <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/09/05/mnangagwa-appoints-task-force-to-deal-with-drug-abuse/">appointed a task force to hunt down drug peddlers.</a> 
Parirenyatwa Hospital attends to about 800 mental health patients monthly with most of the ailments being related to drugs.

The senior nursing officer at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital Mr Nelson Makore said mental health cases linked to drug abuse have since overtaken traditional causes like depression. He added:

Almost 70 percent of the patients we attend to, have problems related to drug abuse and mutoriro is the new drug that is selling more than anything else. It is highly addictive and it affects the mental health of the people.
</blockquote>
While some drug and substance abusers cite economic hardships in the country as push factors, Mr Makore said drug abuse also affects the haves as drugs are expensive. 
He said medical doctors, nurses, pharmacists, police officers, soldiers and officers from the central intelligence organisation, university and college students and pupils from boarding schools constitute a large part of affected people.  

The clinical matron at Sally Mugabe psychiatric unit Ms Enety Mahove said women were also among those with drug-induced mental ailments.
Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals spokesperson Mr Linos Dhire said the increase in the number of youths coming for assistance has caused a huge workload at the hospital because most of these patients present as psychiatric emergency cases, especially with aggression and suicide attempts. 
He indicated that there is pressure on the part of practitioners to urgently fill the knowledge gap on how to handle new forms of drug and substance abuse adding that there was a need for more staff.

Psychiatric Units Overwhelmed By Drug Abuse-linked Mental Health Cases

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals (PGH) has stopped booking people for COVID-19 vaccination saying the group will now operate on a first-come, first-serve basis. Pindula News present the Group’s statement that announced the development.
<blockquote>We would like to inform members of the public that we have stopped the booking system which the hospital had introduced to manage the huge numbers of people who came to be vaccinated. Prior to the 9th of July 2021, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals was one of the only 2 vaccination centres in the Greater Harare. This posed a number of challenges especially in the management of crowds.
Following the decentralization of the vaccination program to local clinics under the City of Harare, we are now administering the jabs on a first-come, first-serve basis. We now expect reasonable numbers of people to come to our hospital and encourage the public to get vaccinated at their local clinics.
We have also come across media articles claiming that our security personnel are getting paid by some members of the public in return for preferential treatment. We would like to reiterate that the hospital is against any form of corruption and notices to that effect are all over the hospital urging members of the public to report any form of corruption by any of our staff members. We have not received any report of corruption against our security personnel controlling queues at the vaccination centre. However, anyone who has encountered such unscrupulous behavior is free to report to the police or to the hospital management.

Parirenyatwa Update On Boy Mauled By Hyena At Church Service

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals has reported that a bogus doctor recently tried to infiltrate the institution but was eventually caught. We present the health institution’s press statement below.

Fake Doctor Infiltrates Parirenyatwa Hospitals

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals temporarily closed its Casualty Department this Friday for routine fumigation, the hospital said in a statement.
The hospital will be closed from 12 pm to 4 pm today, thereafter, only emergencies will continue to be attended. The statement read:
<blockquote>Please be informed that our Accident and Emergency Department (Casualty) is temporarily closed for routine fumigation from 12 pm to 4 pm today the 24th of July 2020.
Thereafter, only emergencies will continue to be attended to given the current 
circumstances.
Any inconvenience caused is sincerely regretted.</blockquote>

Parirenyatwa Hospital Temporarily Closes Casualty Department

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals has dismissed as false the “confessions” of an anonymous individual who claimed to have been a midwife at the hospital.
The individual, who said she was a midwife at the hospital’s Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital, alleged that she switched babies and gave her friend a physically challenged child to spite her.
However, in a statement, Parirenyatwa Hospital said after carrying out investigations into its archives, it found no records that Everjoy Mapako nor Juliet Kamotsi delivered babies at Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital on 13 July 1991 as claimed by the unnamed former midwife. The statement read:
<blockquote>Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals has taken note of an article allegedly authored by a former midwife at Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital.
The author narrates how in 1991 she exchanged babies belonging to Everjoy Mapako with another one belonging to Juliet Karnatsi.
The sensational article is widely circulating on both social media platforms and mainstream media, igniting deep emotions among many people who read it.
Parirenyetwa Group of Hospitals would like to set the record straight Mbuya Nelunda Maternity Hospital keeps records of all mothers who delivered at the hospital since before Zimbabwe’s independence.
The hospital took this issue seriously and dug into as archives where records for the period stated in the article were retrieved and analysed.

Parirenyatwa Hospital Responds To Reports Of Alleged Baby Switch In 1991

In a development that borders on favouritism, the Health Services Board (HSB) has offered Dr Chagumira employment as a supernumerary ahead of doctors in training who have been offering services at Parirenyatwa for free, for over 4 years.
The appointment of Dr Chagumira, a Retired Colonel from the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, has not gone down well with doctors at the country’s largest referral hospital.
The doctors have since written to the HSB, airing their grievances and threatening to go on strike if the appointment is not reversed in 72 hours. The wrote:
<blockquote>It has come to our understanding that one of the posts meant for our supernumerary registrars has been awarded to a Retired Colonel Dr Chagumira from the defence forces of Zimbabwe by the Health Services Board (HSB).
We have been fighting for SHO posts as well as for our supernumerary registrars to be recruited by the government for over 4 years now, as they can go for up to 5 years working without remuneration.
We are aware that these posts had been availed to us in the past two weeks, and it comes as a shock that a retired doctor has been called back from retirement to take up such a post when able-bodied doctors that are already working in the system have not been absorbed.
We have nothing against the above-mentioned doctor. We are truly displeased by these turn of events and we will withdraw our services in 72 hours if this anomaly is not rectified.
In short, we are requesting that our unpaid registrars be absorbed by the government and be remunerated accordingly, and the SHO posts be given to those who have applied for them in our department.</blockquote>

Retired Colonel Lands Top Post At Parirenyatwa, Doctors Threaten Strike

University Of Zimbabwe College Of Health Sciences (UZCHS) lecturers in the department of surgery have withdrawn their teaching services in protest against the unprocedural replacement of their Head of Department and ill-treatment of Part Five Medical Students (MBChB) and MMED students by the UZCHS dean Professor Rangarirai Masanganise.
Health Times claims that the department of surgery has in a letter informed the University authorities that lecturers were withdrawing their services.Part of the letter reads:
<blockquote>The department of Surgery UZ consultants have suspended their work services with immediate effect as they await for the Vice Chancellor to address them and give redress to the issues of unfair dismissal of their chairperson and the appointment of one Faith Muchemwa as substantive chairperson in total  disregard to the standing statutes of the University.</blockquote>
The Senior Hospital Doctors Association (SHDA) and Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA) claim that the dismissal of Dr David Muchuweti and Dr David Chimuka followed by the subsequent appointment of Professor Faith Muchemwa, contravened the University’s laws.
The associations also say that the suspension of the lecturers was a danger to the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and a South African company partnership on cardiothoracic surgery and to the country’s health delivery system.

University Of Zimbabwe College Of Health Sciences Lecturers Withdraw Teaching Services Effective Immediately

Senior Hospital Doctors are this Wednesday expected to March from Parirenyatwa Hospital to Africa Unit Square where their representatives will proceed and submit their petition to Members of Parliament.
This comes after the Zimbabwe Republic Police responded to the doctors’ application granting them permission to carry on with the march where police will provide escort.
Medical doctors in public health institutions have been on industrial action since the 3rd of September this year demanding sustainable salaries and better working conditions.
Negotiations with the employer did not yield any positive results as workers repeatedly turned down the government’s offers saying that they were insignificant considering that the economy in the country is inflationary.
Some doctors were fired for embarking on the “illegal” strike which has left patients stranded as there are no health caregivers to attend to them.
Patients have now resorted to other alternatives including mission hospitals which have since indicated that they are now overwhelmed by patients whilst private medical institutions are scaring off patients by their high charges.
The government has reported that of all the dismissed doctors, only 46 have returned to work following President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s moratorium which allowed fired doctors to return to work without reapplying.

Senior Doctors Marching To Parliament Today

University Of Zimbabwe (UZ) consultant have resolved to end their demonstration following the academic institution’s reversal of suspensions to paediatric surgeon Bothwell Mbuwayesango and consultant cardiothoracic surgeon David Chimuka.
The Zimbabwe Medical Association (Zima) last told the Daily News that the doctors who had downed tools on Tuesday this week in solidarity with the duo were no longer on strike. Zima said:
<blockquote>Senior consultants at the University of Zimbabwe are not on strike and will make everything possible to ensure continuity of teaching.
The university reconsiders its action in light of further information availed and submissions made during the discussions.</blockquote>
Zima had earlier called upon the government to reconsider its decision to suspend the two surgeons saying it had a very huge adverse impact on the healthcare delivery system.
Mbuwayesango who is the country’s first doctor to separate conjoined twins in 2014 had been suspended for allegedly inciting doctors to strike.
Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA) had called upon the Parliament to summon the Health Minister, Dr Obadiah Moyo over the suspensions which the association said would deprive many citizens of the right to health.
