South Africa’s Health Department is warning of a spike in COVID-19 infections in four provinces.
Experts say cases are of less severe Omicron sub-variants.
In Gauteng, the number is rising, eNCA news reported citing Dr Harsha Somaroo, a Public Health Medicine Specialist at Wits University.
Somaroo said a higher number of tests have been performed in Gauteng since 2020. She said:

In terms of the recent increase in the number of Covid-19 cases, I think the one thing we think might be associated with it is the recent school holidays at the beginning of October.
I think usually the Covid cases —  when you consider the incubation time of the virus — it increases about five to ten days after transmission occurs so that’s when we start seeing the increase in the numbers.
As much as we’re slightly concerned about the increase, the numbers are low-level increases and we’ll continue to monitor it.

South Africa has as of 31 October 2022 recorded over 4 million cases and over 102 000 deaths.

South Africa: COVID-19 Spike In 4 Districts

The President of The Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, has ordered the arrest of unvaccinated people who will violate stay-at-home orders aimed at curbing rising coronavirus cases in the Asian country driven by the Omicron variant.
On Friday, The Philippines reported at least 21 819 new COVID-19 infections, raising the country’s positivity rate to a new record of 40 per cent out of 70 049 tests conducted.
On 1 January 2022, there were just 3 617 new cases reported, and the cumulative cases since the pandemic approach three million.
There are now 77 369 active cases officially recorded in The Philippines, the highest since 17 October 2021.
On Friday, the country reported 129 new deaths, bringing the official death toll to 51 871, although the actual number of deaths could be higher.
In a pre-recorded message, Duterte on Thursday ordered the arrest of unvaccinated people who break stay-at-home orders. Said Duterte:

Because it’s a national emergency, it is my position that we can restrain.
I am now giving orders to the [village chiefs] to look for those persons who are not vaccinated and just request them or order them, if you may, to stay put.
And if he refuses and goes out of the house and goes around in the community or maybe everywhere, he can be restrained.
If he refuses then the [official] is empowered to arrest the recalcitrant persons.

Vaccination against COVID-19 is voluntary in the nation of 110 million people, and less than half the population have so far been fully vaccinated.
Duterte said he was “appalled” at the large numbers of Filipinos yet to be vaccinated.
The Government loosened lockdowns in October last year in order to revive the struggling economy.
However, stricter measures were reimposed following the emergence of the highly transmissible Omicron variant.
Under the new tighter restrictions, in place until mid-January, unvaccinated residents have to stay at home unless buying essentials or exercising.
The Government has also ordered restaurants, parks, churches and beauty salons to operate at lower capacity, while in-person classes and contact sports are suspended.

Unvaccinated Filipinos Face Arrest For Violating Stay-at-home Orders

The United States of America will on 31 December lift restrictions on travellers from Southern African nations, imposed last month in a bid to slow down the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant.
White House’s assistant press secretary, Kevin Munoz, said that the restrictions will be lifted in line with a recommendation from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Munoz <a href="https://twitter.com/KMunoz46/status/1474373042000195587?s=20">tweeted</a> on Friday:

On Dec. 31, [President Joe Biden] will lift the temporary travel restrictions on Southern Africa countries. This decision was recommended by [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention].
The restrictions gave us time to understand Omicron and we know our existing vaccines work against Omicron, [especially] boosted.

The US ban applied to South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi.
Al Jazeera quoted a senior White House official as saying with Omicron present across the US and globally, international travellers from the eight affected countries would not have a significant effect on US cases. Said the official:

US To Lift Omicron-related Travel Ban On Southern African Countries

The United Kingdom (UK) has removed all 11 African countries from its red list, which severely restricted travel between those states and the UK.
Under the measures which were imposed last month, only British or Irish nationals or those with residency in the UK could re-enter the country.
The UK imposed the draconian measures to slow down the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant that was first detected in South Africa and Botswana.
The restrictions will be lifted at 6 AM (Central African Time) on Wednesday (tomorrow). Speaking in Parliament, UK Health Minster Sajid Javid said:

Now that there is community transmission of Omicron in the UK and Omicron has spread so widely across the country the travel red list is now less effective in slowing the incursion of Omicron from abroad.
Whilst we will maintain our temporary testing measures for international travel we will be removing all 11 countries from the travel red list effective from 4 AM (GMT) tomorrow morning.

UK Removes All 11 African Countries From Red List

The United Kingdom (UK) is set to remove the travel red list as soon as this week, the Daily Mail reported.
The UK imposed the draconian measures following the emergence of Omicron, a more transmissible variant of the novel coronavirus that was first detected in South Africa and Botswana.
Travellers to the UK from several African countries on the red list were forced into hotel quarantine at a cost of £2 285 per person for ten days.
The move angered the listed countries, with Nigeria reportedly mulling plans to ban flights from Argentina, Britain, Canada and Saudi Arabia from this week in retaliation.
Africa’s most populous nation was added to those countries’ red lists over the detection of the Omicron coronavirus variant last month.
Meanwhile, UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps is said to have convinced Cabinet it should be replaced with testing for the fully vaccinated.
At Wednesday’s COVID-19 briefing, Prime Minister Boris Johnson promised to re-examine the policy amid claims it was unfair and ineffective.
While several countries have banned travellers from some African nations, the Omicron variant has since spread to at least 57 countries.

UK Set To Scrap Red List, To Be Replaced With Testing For The Fully Vaccinated

The Government of Russia has announced that foreign visitors from nine African countries and Hong Kong are completely banned from entering the east European country to curb the spread of the Omicron variant.
Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed the decree announcing new travel restrictions which were published this Saturday.
The new measures effectively cancel all earlier exceptions for diplomatic passport holders, travellers on a business visa, and some other categories of visitors.
The countries affected are Botswana, Zimbabwe, Hong Kong, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Eswatini and South Africa.
Initially, Russian authorities said the entry of foreigners residing in Hong Kong or in some African countries would be “restricted” due to the spread of the new strain of the infection.
Russia joins a long list of countries around the world that have restricted visitors from south Africa where the Omicron variant was initially detected.
Other countries to have adopted the draconian measures include the United Kingdom, Israel, Australia, the United States of America, New Zealand, among others.
The Omicron variant was first reported in South Africa but later found to have been detected in the Netherlands at an earlier date.
On 26 November, the World Health Organisation (WHO) designated the B.1.1.529 coronavirus variant as a “Variant of Concern” and assigned it the Greek letter Omicron.

Russia Completely Bans Travel From 9 African Countries, Hong Kong

Thailand has denied rebuked a local newspaper for its choice of words in describing the Government’s attempts to track down travellers from African countries to test them for coronavirus amid fears of a new strain, Omicron.
This comes after a widely-read Thai newspaper, The Bangkok Post had run the headline “Government hunts for African visitors” on its front page and website.
A spokeswoman from the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), a government agency tasked with managing Thailand’s COVID-19 response, rebuked the newspaper during a press conference on Friday. She said:

Let me state clearly and unequivocally that this headline does not in any way reflect the government’s policy and or approach nor does it characterise any of the procedures the government has put in place thus far.
In fact, it was a very poor choice of words and we hope the editors will take good note of the negative feedback it has already elicited.

According to BBC, the spokeswoman did not mention the paper by name, however, images on social media showed the Bangkok Post had run the headline on its front page on the morning of 2 December.
Meanwhile, the newspaper has since changed the headline to “searched for” instead of “hunted”. <a href="https://www.bangkokpost.com/learning/easy/2225403/govt-hunts-for-african-visitors">The report reads</a> in part:

The Immigration Bureau and the Ministry of Public Health are tracking about 783 African travellers who have entered Thailand since Nov 15.

Thailand has imposed a travel ban on visitors from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
