The Ministry of Health and ChildCare has removed the prerequisite of passing O’ Level Mathematics for nurse training qualification.
In recent years, Zimbabweans pursuing the three-year Diploma in Registered General Nurse Training needed a minimum of five “O” Level subjects.
These subjects included English Language, Mathematics, a Science subject, and two additional subjects (excluding practical ones like Fashion and Fabrics, Metal Work, Graphic Art, Art, and Woodwork). The minimum grade required was a C or better, obtained from no more than two sittings.
Yet, an advertisement placed by the Ministry of Health in the Sunday papers on April 7, 2024, regarding the General Nurse Training May 2024 Intake, does not mention the Mathematics requirement.
As per the advertisement, applicants for the three-year Diploma Nurse Training must possess a minimum of five ‘0’ Level subjects.
These subjects should include passes in English Language, a Science subject, and three additional subjects (excluding practical ones like Fashion and Fabrics, Metal Work, Graphic Art, Art, and Woodwork). The required grade is C or better, obtained from no more than two sittings.
Additionally, the Ministry specified that applicants must be between 17 and 30 years old by May 13, 2024.
Medical professionals who spoke to <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/ministry-of-health-scraps-o-level-maths-as-requirement-for-nurse-training/">ZimLive</a> expressed their apprehensions regarding the decision. A doctor who chose to remain anonymous said:

This lowering of standards appears to be a targeted move to get people who don’t qualify to join the nursing profession, God knows for what reason.
Nurse training involves a wide range of mathematical concepts and skills, including number sense, measurement, and data analysis. A nurse recruited on what appears to be a purely political formula will be a danger to patients
</blockquote>
The advert says applicants must drop their application letters at their nearest general nurse training schools.

Nurse Training In Zimbabwe No Longer Requires O’ Level Mathematics

The Ministry of Health and Childcare has invited applications for the national online recruitment of Registered General Nurse Training. A notice published by the Ministry on its social media channels reads:

Applications for the three-year Diploma in Registered General Nurse Training to be conducted by the Ministry of Health and Child Health Care (MOHCC) are invited from suitably qualified holders of the following qualifications

<li>A minimum of 5 “0” Level Subjects with passes in English Language, Mathematics, and a Science subject and two others (that exclude practical subjects such as Fashion and Fabrics, Metal Work, Graphic Art, Art and Woodwork) at Grade C or better obtained from not more than two sittings with full certificates as Examination Result Slips are not accepted.</li>
<li>Must be aged between the ages of seventeen (17) and thirty (30) years on the date of commencement of training which is 05/09/2022</li>
</ul>
NB: Candidates should not be less than 17 years and not more than 30 years by 5 September 2022
The portal for applications is open from 25 July 2022 and applications must be submitted not later than 7 August 2022 using the following MOHCC Electronic Platform: www.mohcc.gov.zw and click on the e-nurse link which will take you to the registration page “Register on the website to start your application. Please do not forget the ID number that you used to register as well as the password.”
For the shortlisted candidates, the following should be presented at the interview: original and certified copies of Birth Certificate, National Identity Card, Ordinary Level Certificates, Marriage Certificate where applicable, Advanced Level Certificate if attained and 2 passport size pictures with the applicant’s name at the back.
Submission of two references of which one must be from the Headmaster of the school where the “O” Level Examinations were undertaken will be required from the selected candidates.
Manual verification of the academic and identification certificates will be done on the day of interviews.
The cost of accessing the Electronic Application Form is $500 ZWL and applicants should follow the instructions on the website for payment (No additional payments are required as this is the only fee to be paid).
The invitations for interviews which will be held at specified interview venues will be through the MOHCC e-Recruitment Platform.
Only candidates who meet the recruitment criteria will be shortlisted for interviews. 
Successful candidates will be informed via the MOHCC Electronic Platform and are required to have a satisfactory Medical Examination conducted by a Government Medical Officer.
Accepted candidates will be deployed to where training posts exist throughout the country

Ministry Of Health Commences Online Recruitment Of Student Nurses

The government has extended the deadline for the nurses’ e-recruitment application from the original 30th of November to 08 December.
This follows a technical glitch that affected the payment portal for over a week last month.
The deadline extension was confirmed by the publications relations officer in the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ministry_of_Health_and_Child_Care" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Ministry of Health and Child Care</a> Donald Mujiri. He said:
<blockquote>We have extended the deadline to 8 December and prospective applicants can visit our website for more information on the application process.</blockquote>

Nurses' E-recruitment Application Deadline Extended

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ministry_of_Health_and_Child_Care" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Ministry of Health and Child Care</a> has defended the e-recruitment of nurses saying it is not region-based and the process is credible as the selection is done on a random basis.
In a statement, Health Minister <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Obadiah_Moyo" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Obadiah Moyo</a> said the e-recruitment method was introduced to eradicate corruption in the recruitment of nurses. He said:
<blockquote>The government wishes to inform the public that there was no favouritism in the recruitment of student nurses and that students from Matabeleland provinces were also considered to train in the just ended e-nursing recruitment processes.
The e-recruitment process was not conducted on a regional basis but on a national basis and it offered credibility in that it administered the selection on a random process, no one knew who was to be selected and who was not to be selected as the process was done electronically.</blockquote>
The online portal for nursing applications was opened this year and was open to aspiring nurses throughout the country.
However, the process caused outrage in the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Matabeleland_province" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Matabeleland</a> provinces as more than 80 per cent of student nurses enrolled at Bulawayo’s two major hospitals came from Mashonaland provinces.

Obadiah Moyo: No Favouritism In E-recruitment Of Nurses

Aspiring nurses can now send their applications for training to the Ministry of Health and Child Care.
This comes after the Ministry flighted an advertisement in the media over the weekend.
The latest date for submitting applications is August 31, 2019. The applications are being submitted using the Health Ministry’s electronic platform <a href="http://enurse.zimrbf.org:8083/cc/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">hh://mohcc.go.zw</a>. The advert read:
<blockquote>The cost of accessing the electronic application form is RTGS$10 payable to MoHCC’s merchant code 334085 (no additional payments are required as this the only fee to be paid).
The invitations for interviews which will be held at specified venues will be through the MoHCC e-recruitment electronic platform. Only candidates that meet the recruitment criteria will be shortlisted for interviews.</blockquote>
Aspiring nurses now need to have passed Mathematics at Ordinary Level, unlike in the past when Maths was not a requirement. English Language and a Science subject are still required.
Overall, 5 O’ Level subjects are a prerequisite including the three mentioned above.
Only those who are aged between 17 and a half years to 30 years are eligible to apply.
Health Minister Obadiah Moyo has warned those bent on taking advantage of spiring nurses that they will be dealt with severely. He said:
<blockquote>We are aware that a lot of our people are going to fall victim to both cybercriminals and some hospital workers into believing that they will be assisted to get training vacancies, but I want to warn that we will deal decisively with such rogue elements in our hospitals.
No monies must be paid to anyone and this new recruiting method was made to avert corruption. Prospective candidates must utilise our platform and make sure it is the official platform.
Individuals who are caught duping people will face the music. We are saying ‘zero tolerance to corruption in student nurse recruitment’.</blockquote>
