Over 90 people were killed and 50 others injured after a fuel tanker overturned and sparked an explosion in Jigawa state, Nigeria on Tuesday.
According to police spokesperson Lawan Adam, the accident occurred past midnight when the tanker driver lost control of the vehicle while travelling on a highway close to a university. He said:

At about 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Majia Town, Taura local government area of Jigawa, the tanker driver lost control near Khadija University and it exploded.
The driver left Kano and was heading to Nguru in Yobe when the accident happened.
We are worried that in spite of police warnings for people to steer clear from scenes of accidents involving fuel tankers, they still engage in such acts.
People gathered around the accident scene, which is the reason for the mass casualty.

As reported by <a href="https://www.africanews.com/2024/10/16/nigeria-gasoline-tanker-explosion-kills-90-injures-50-police/">africanews</a>, deadly tanker accidents are common in Nigeria, where traffic regulations are not strictly enforced and there is a lack of efficient transportation infrastructure like railways to move cargo.
It is also common for people to rush to the scene of such accidents to salvage fuel, especially given Nigeria’s high fuel prices.
Residents rushed to the overturned tanker to scoop up fuel, which “sparked a massive inferno that killed 94 people on the spot,” according to the police spokesperson.
Videos from the scene showed a massive fire and what appeared to be bodies scattered across the area.

We Have To Give Credit To The Warriors Of Zimbabwe - Alex Iwobi

Commander of the Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) Air Marshal Elson Moyo has reportedly travelled to Nigeria to ask his counterpart for technical assistance, including in the operation and maintenance of F7 and Mi-35 aircraft.
According to a report by <a href="https://www.defenceweb.co.za/aerospace/aerospace-aerospace/zimbabwe-air-force-asks-nigeria-for-technical-assistance/">Defence Web</a>, citing the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Moyo visited NAF Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, at NAF Headquarters in late March.
Moyo is reported to have said he would like to pursue technical assistance in the areas of research and development, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology (drones) and the operation and maintenance of F7 and Mi-35 aircraft.
He said areas for collaboration are of common interest to Zimbabwe and Nigeria as their respective air forces operate some similar aircraft (including F7s and Mi-35s).
Moyo noted that the Nigerian Air Force has within a short time recorded “remarkable feats” in its transformation effort to develop indigenous capacity.
He said the Air Force of Zimbabwe’s ability to acquire basic aircraft parts and other equipment was being hampered by sanctions imposed on the country by Western powers.
Zimbabwe’s Air Chief commended the NAF for its support in the past, including training given to the first batch of Zimbabwe pilots in the 1980s.
Amao said that the NAF is ready to forge a mutually beneficial partnership with the Air Force of Zimbabwe.

Air Force Of Zimbabwe Asks Nigeria For Technical Assistance

Former Lagos governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu (70), has won a tight race to succeed Muhammadu Buhari as the next president of Nigeria.
Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), announced early on Wednesday that Tinubu “… is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected”.
<a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/3/1/bola-tinubu-wins-controversial-nigerian-presidential-election">Al Jazeera</a> reported that Tinubu polled 8.8 million votes to defeat former associate-turned-foe Atiku Abubakar and surprise frontrunner Peter Obi, who scored 6.9 million and 6.1 million, respectively.
However, three opposition parties have since called for a cancellation of what they called a “sham” of an election.
Tinubu represented the ruling Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar (76), stood for the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while Peter Obi (61) represented the Labour Party.
Addressing supporters soon after his victory was confirmed, Tinubu said:

This is a serious mandate – I hereby accept it. To serve you… To work with you and make Nigeria great.
I appeal to my fellow contestants to let us team together. It is the only nation we have. It is one country that we must build together.

Tinubu is a former two-term governor of Lagos and is considered the most influential political godfather in current Nigerian history.
He is set to become Nigeria’s fifth president since the return of democracy in 1999.
Earlier on Tuesday, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and African Democratic Congress (CDC) called for the cancellation of the election results.
The losing parties alleged the poll was a “sham” and merely “vote allocation and not collation”.

Ruling Party Candidate, Bola Tinubu, Wins Disputed Nigerian Presidential Election

Millions of Nigerians were expected to cast their votes on Saturday, 25 February 2023 in the most competitive presidential election since military rule ended.
<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-64749942">BBC</a> reported that since 1999, Africa’s most populous country has been dominated by two parties – the ruling Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
APC is represented by former Lagos governor Bola Tinubu (70), while former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar (76) is standing for the main opposition PDP.
There is also a strong challenge from a third-party candidate – the Labour Party’s Peter Obi (61), who is backed by many young people.
There are a total of 18 presidential candidates. Parliamentary elections are also taking place.
Reports indicate that election officials and voting material arrived late at some polling stations, including where Tinubu cast his ballot.
Voting machines also malfunctioned at some polling stations, with voters told to return later.
The period preceding the elections has been overshadowed by a cash shortage caused by a failed attempt to redesign the currency.
The new notes were introduced ahead of the elections in order to tackle inflation, and also vote-buying.
There is also high youth unemployment, and widespread insecurity which saw 10 000 killed last year.
A third of the 87 million eligible voters are below 35. In the previous election held in 2019, voter turnout was 35%.
A candidate needs to have the most votes and 25% of ballots cast in two-thirds of Nigeria’s 36 states to be declared the winner
If no one achieves that, there will be a run-off within 21 days – a first in Nigeria’s history.
Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy and as of 2021, its population was 213.4 million. Africa’s second most populous nation, Ethiopia, had 120.4 million people.

Nigeria Holds Election; 87 Million People Eligible To Vote

Nigerian officials will be barred from withdrawing cash from government accounts from March 1, 2023 in an attempt to curb money laundering.
The new rules, which will apply to federal, local and state officials, are in line with government efforts to move Africa’s most populous nation toward a cashless economy, Reuters reported citing a statement by the head of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) Modibbo R. HammanTukur. Read the statement:

Civil servants are becoming more and more vulnerable to money laundering and its predicate offences due to their exposure to cash withdrawals from public accounts,” NFIU director and chief executive Modibbo R. HammanTukur said in the statement.

In the unlikely event that a public official feels he may need cash withdrawal, he may apply for approval for waiver from the presidency which may be granted on case-by-case basis.

NFIU analysis found that from 2015 to 2022, officials withdrew nearly 1.1 trillion naira ($2.45 billion) from government accounts – most of it exceeding previous withdrawal limits.
Last month, Nigeria’s central bank began circulating newly designed 200, 500 and 1,000 naira notes and limited weekly cash withdrawals in order to curb inflation and move towards a cashless economy.
Almost 85% of the 3.23 trillion naira ($7.2 billion) in cash in circulation is now held outside of banks.

Nigeria Moves To Ban Officials From Withdrawing Cash From Government Accounts

Nigeria, which is Africa’s most populous nation with an estimated population of 211.4 million as of 2021, has abolished the English Language in junior school.
Under the country’s National Language Policy that was recently approved by the country’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) or Cabinet, the first six years of basic education should be undertaken in the mother tongue of pupils.
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, briefed journalists on the policy after the cabinet meeting on Wednesday, November 30, 2022. He said:

A memo on national policy was approved by the council. So, Nigeria now has a National Language Policy and the details will be given later by the ministry.
One of the highlights is that the government has agreed now that henceforth, instruction in primary schools; the first six years of learning will be in the mother tongue.
Theoretically, this policy starts today but the use of the mother tongue is exclusive but we need time to develop the material, get the teachers and so on.
Since the first six years of school should be in the mother tongue. Whereby the pupil is, the language of the host community is what will be used.
Because we have 625 languages at the last count and the objective of this policy is to promote and enhance the cultivation and use of all Nigerian languages.

On 12 November, INEC called for the deployment of army and police teams to its offices countrywide following the attacks, which the US and UK have expressed concerns about.
Political analysts like Jibrin Ibrahim, a senior fellow at the Center for Democracy and Development, previously said attacks on facilities coupled with Nigeria’s general security challenges and separatist calls in two areas will affect polls.

Unknown Assailants Destroy Election Materials In Nigeria

The US and the UK have warned their people to “avoid all non-essential travel or movement” to Nigeria over the risk of terror attacks in Nigeria.
BBC News reported that the US embassy in Abuja said there was a long list of potential targets, including:

Government buildings, places of worship, schools, markets, shopping malls, hotels, bars, restaurants, athletic gatherings, transport terminals, law enforcement facilities, and international organizations.

The US also said Abuja is at special risk of being attacked.
In a security notice, the embassy told people to stay alert and avoid crowds to keep safe.
Meanwhile, the UK government warned that “attacks could be indiscriminate and could affect western interests, as well as places visited by tourists”.
Nigeria is facing rising insecurity. Back in July, more than 400 prisoners went missing after a prison break which Islamist militants claimed responsibility for.
At the time Defence Minister Bashir Magashi told reporters that 64 jailed jihadists had escaped from the prison.
The government of outgoing President Buhari is facing increasing criticism for its failure to tackle the country’s widespread insecurity with armed kidnapping gangs and militant groups unleashing violence.
Just last week, the First Lady apologised in an interview with the BBC, saying that her husband’s administration tried their best, but may not have lived up to what people expected.
Following his victory in Nigeria’s presidential election in 2015, General Muhammadu Buhari singled out the threat of the militant Islamist group Boko Haram as the biggest problem facing the country.
Gen Buhari, who was a former military ruler, said he needed the cooperation of other countries to tackle Boko Haram more quickly.
Boko Haram continues to be a threat to the West African country.

UK, USA, Warn Against Travelling To Nigeria

China has refuted claims it opened and operates police stations in Nigeria and other countries where its nationals work and reside.
This follows a recent report by a rights organization, Safeguard Defenders, titled “110 Overseas Chinese Transnational Policing Gone Wild” which claimed that the Chinese government established a police station in Nigeria.
However, in an exclusive interview with the Nigerian publication, <a href="https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/10/china-opens-police-station-in-nigeria/">Vanguard</a> on Wednesday, a top Chinese official who spoke on condition of anonymity dispelled the report.
The official said diplomatic relations cannot allow any government to open police posts in another sovereign country outside its borders. Said the official:

There is no such station in Nigeria or everywhere. This is because no sovereign country may allow other countries to establish their own (police) stations on their territory. Isn’t this common sense?
</blockquote>
The Chinese official, however, revealed that there are outreach programs in countries where Chinese residents live to assist and protect them from terrorism, abduction, and other crimes that could risk their lives. He said:

Also, there is only one category of outreach services for Chinese communities, therefore China has no intention or spare energy to run police stations outside its borders.
You know in Nigeria, there are a lot of insecurity issues happening almost every day. I cannot remember, maybe September or August or July or June, there were terrorists, bandits, they had kidnapped a lot of innocent persons, and also among these innocent persons, there were some Chinese nationals.

Another Chinese official said what they can only do is help assist Chinese nationals without violating Nigerian sovereignty. He said:

What I mean (by the outreach services) is that every nation has its mission to care for and help its own nationals.
So they have no right, they have no power to decide or command the Nigerian government or police forces, what they can only do is assist or play the outside role to help the Chinese nationals.

China Rejects Report Of Running Police Station In Nigeria

Islamic religious police in northern Nigeria arrested a man who put himself up for sale to escape biting poverty, a local official said on Wednesday.
Aliyu Idris, 26, was arrested on Tuesday by the morality police in Kano after pictures emerged on social media showing him holding a placard indicating he was up for auction at 20 million naira (US$49 000). Said Lawal Ibrahim Fagge, a spokesman for the religious police called Hisbah:

We arrested him for putting himself up for sale, which is illegal under Islamic law. 

</blockquote>
Fagge added that the man is in their custody and also blamed the man’s action on poverty and ignorance.
Last week Idris, a tailor from neighbouring Kaduna, went around the city last week with the placard inscribed with the sale offer. Residents posted pictures of him online, turning him into a sensation.
The young man told reporters he was “selling” himself out of “excruciating poverty” and that he intended to give half the money to his parents and two million naira to anyone who could facilitate the auction. 
He had also promised to be a “loyal servant” to his buyer.
While Nigeria is regarded the second largest economy in Africa, after South Africa, some sections of society live in abject poverty at the backdrop of rampant corruption and looting by political elites. 
The Nigerian National Bureau of Statistics said in 2020 that 40% or 83 million Nigerians live in poverty while the World Bank’s income poverty threshold of $3.20 per day suggests that Nigeria’s poverty rate is 71%.

A Nigerian prison was raided by gunmen who went on to free 240 inmates.
A spokesperson of the Nigerian Correctional Service confirmed the attack, which is reported to have started late on Sunday:

RwandAir has announced that passengers originating from Nigeria will not be allowed to enter Dubai. Below is the statement. 
<blockquote>Effective 1 February 2021, the United Arab Emirates will only allow passengers travelling from Nigeria to fly on direct flights to Dubai. Passengers originating from Nigeria to Dubai via any transit point will not be allowed to enter Dubai.
As a result, RwandAir will not lift passengers from Nigeria to Dubai from 31st January 2021 until further notice. Affected passengers will be offered the option to rebook and fly at a later date at no additional cost or request for a refund.

A Nigerian official, the acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Prof Daniel Pondei, fainted where he was seated after the members of the House Committee on NDDC grilled him for about 45 minutes.
According to Nigerian online publication <a href="https://nairametrics.com/2020/07/20/just-in-nddc-acting-md-faints-during-public-hearing/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Nairametrics</a>, Pondei was rushed out of the Conference Room 231, venue of the investigative hearing on illegal spending and mismanagement of funds.

Describing Zimbabwe as cash strapped country, the article went on to say, Nigeria, Africa’s second-largest economy is yet to make good on its obligation to pay the UN fees 10 months into 2019.

The United Nations is facing a serious cash shortage crisis with the secretary-general admitting that if other countries don’t pay their member fees they may not be able to meet their salary obligation for next month.

Nigerians have angrily taken it to the streets to register their displeasure and stand in solidarity with their fellow Africans who are under attack in South Africa. Looting and vandalism cases have been recorded at MTN, Shoprite and other SA businesses operating in Nigeria. The Chief Of Police in Nigeria told AFP that they had increased security for South African businesses:

Billowing smoke from the bonfire paralysed vehicular traffic on the Expressway as security agents mounted guard over the shopping mall which failed to open for fear of being attacked.</blockquote>

Super Eagles Of Nigeria To Play Zimbabwe Warriors Before AFCON

Nigerian workers belonging to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) stormed the Zimbabwean Embassy in Abuja on Friday.
Reports from Nigeria indicate that the workers were demanding the immediate unconditional release of workers and labour leaders arrested during the ShtDownZim campaign.
President of the NLC, Ayuba Wabba warned that if the Zimbabwean authorities failed to release the ZCTU leaders, his organisation will mobilise workers across the world to shut down Zimbabwean embassies worldwide.
Wabba also asked the United Nations to invoke relevant international conventions to protect the right of workers in Zimbabwe. Said Wabba:
<blockquote>…the protest is against what many Zimbabweans perceive as insensitive policy choices by the government of Zimbabwe. The Nigerian working class family is sad that what should have passed as a civil action in democratic climes was met with disproportionate use of force by the Zimbabwean military and security forces.
The brazen show of force culminated into widespread suppression and violation of the fundamental human rights of ordinary Zimbabweans, who were exposed to an orgy of violence, bloodshed and acts of state cruelty.
The NLC is particularly concerned about allegations of home raids, killings, rapes, robbery and physical assaults against workers, women, children and civilians generally, during the so-called crackdown of protests by the Zimbabwean security forces.</blockquote>
The government of Zimbabwe attracted a lot of condemnation after it deployed heavily armed soldiers to deal with protestors. More than 12 people reportedly died, most of them from gunshot wounds.
