The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested seven individuals involved in illegal gold mining activities at the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/National_University_of_Science_and_Technology/">National University of Science and Technology (NUST)</a> in Bulawayo. A police report seen by Pindula News read:

Police in Bulawayo have arrested 7 illegal miners for conducting mining activities at Nust Campus on 14/11/23. The arrest led to the recovery of three cement sacks of gold ore.
</blockquote>
This is not the first time such arrests have been made at the NUST campus, as in July of this year, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/07/15/nine-people-arrested-for-illegal-gold-mining-at-nust-campus/">nine people were arrested for engaging in illegal gold mining</a> there. According to reports, the arrests were made at both the NUST campus and the Bulawayo City Council Khumalo pit. Along with the arrests, the police were able to recover 85 kg of gold ore, as well as various mining tools and equipment including a generator, picks, shovels, a hammer, water pumps, an axe, and a machete.
The issue of illegal mining and the invasion of properties by gold panners is not new in Zimbabwe. Earlier this year, a family from Kwekwe narrowly escaped a potential tragedy when part of their house collapsed into an underground mining tunnel beneath their home. The Rusike family had been unknowingly living above the tunnel until they detected noises caused by underground mining activities and evacuated the premises. In March, several learners at Globe and Phoenix Primary School in Kwekwe were injured when a classroom block collapsed into a mine shaft. The school had already decommissioned some of its classroom blocks due to illegal gold panning within the premises.
Kwekwe, located in the Midlands Province, has a significant number of artisanal and small-scale miners who engage in gold panning. The prevalence of such mining activities increases the risk of accidents and property damage caused by unauthorised mining operations.
The ZRP’s efforts to crack down on illegal mining activities are commendable, as these activities not only pose risks to the individuals involved but also undermine the integrity of educational institutions and public infrastructure. It is crucial for authorities to continue their vigilance and take appropriate measures to deter and prevent illegal mining, ensuring the safety of communities and protecting valuable resources.

7 Illegal Miners Arrested For Mining Gold At NUST Campus

The Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Zimbabwe has created an inexpensive device called a spacer specifically for children with asthma. The spacer is made from a recycled water bottle and an inhaler. It assists children who struggle to use the inhaler correctly by ensuring that the medicine reaches their lungs.
Professor Elopy Sibanda, the Dean of the NUST Faculty of Medicine, came up with the idea of using spacers after observing that many children under the age of five were having difficulty taking their life-saving medication through the inhaler alone. He told The Herald:

As a doctor I would prescribe medicine for children and their parents would buy it, but still the children due to their age could not master taking in the medication. So all the medication would go to waste and the condition of the child would not improve. Even asking the parents to demonstrate how they give it to children, it became clear that there was a challenge.

Professor Sibanda used a discarded water bottle, cut it and attached an inhaler. This idea was supported by the Zimbabwe Allergy Association and the Paediatric Association of Zimbabwe.
The South African Allergy Association initially laughed at the invention, but eventually donated funds to produce spacers using custom-made containers. The spacers are plastic bottles with two openings, allowing children to inhale medicine easily. They will be distributed to children in Bulawayo and other areas. The spacers will save lives and money, as the ones available at pharmacies are expensive. Asthma is a condition that causes breathing difficulties, and the spacers will help improve the lives of affected children and their families.

NUST Develops Asthma Spacer Device For Children

Zimbabwean scientist Dr. Phylis Makurunje is leading a team at Bangor University Nuclear Futures Institute in Wales to develop a nuclear system for powering rockets. The technology aims to significantly reduce travel time to Mars, potentially cutting it from nine months to four to six months. The team is also working on nuclear fuel cells, the size of poppy seeds, to provide energy for sustaining life on the Moon, supporting NASA’s goal of establishing a lunar outpost by 2030.
The university intends to test the nuclear fuel in the coming months. The microgenerators developed for the Moon could also have applications on Earth, such as providing electricity in disaster-stricken areas.
Dr. Makuranje, a graduate of the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), stated that the new technology has the potential to reduce the travel time to Mars by almost 50%. She told BBC News:

It is very powerful – it gives very high thrust, the push it gives to the rocket. This is very important because it enables rockets to reach the farthest planets.
With nuclear thermal propulsion – you’re looking at about four to six months getting to Mars. The current duration is nine months plus.

Dr. Makuranje joined the Nuclear Futures Institute in mid-2020 contributing her extensive expertise in ceramic materials manufacturing. She obtained her PhD from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, in 2020, focusing on ceramics for aerospace applications. Prior to that, she completed a Masters in Materials Engineering and a Bachelors in Chemical Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand and NUST, respectively. She humorously refers to herself as the “odd girl who made wire cars.” She said in a previous interview:

A lot of people around me took me so seriously that parents in my neighbourhood would come to my mother to ask for me to make wire cars for their kids.
One day, I saw an older boy who had made a helicopter which rolled on wheels, and I said to myself, ‘I want to make a helicopter too’. My career path since then did not take a straight line; I startlingly leaped back into my dream when I got the opportunity to study aerospace materials at the University of the Witwatersrand.

She is actively involved in various space-related organizations and committees, working to advance Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and space education in rural Africa. Dr. Makurunje’s innovative work has earned her recognition, including a Space Generation Leadership award from the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC). Her research and contributions contribute to the advancement of space technology and energy solutions.

The police posted on Twitter that the arrests took place at the NUST campus and the Bulawayo City Council Khumalo pit. Along with these arrests, the police recovered 85 kg of gold ore, a generator, two picks, a hammer, two water pumps, two shovels, an axe, and a machete. Reads the tweet:

The issue of invasion of properties by gold panners is not new in Zimbabwe. The NUST incident comes in the wake of a related incident that occurred in May, where a family from Kwekwe narrowly escaped death after part of their house collapsed into an underground mining tunnel beneath their home. The Rusike family had been unknowingly living on top of a huge mining tunnel for years until they detected some noises due to mining activities underground and vacated the house. Part of the house then collapsed into the tunnel after the family had moved out.
In March, at least seven learners at Globe and Phoenix Primary School in Kwekwe’s Central Business District, Midlands Province, were injured after a classroom block collapsed into a mine shaft. The school had previously decommissioned some of its classroom blocks due to illegal gold panners randomly digging within its premises.
Kwekwe, a city in Midlands Province, Zimbabwe, has many artisanal and small-scale miners who engage in gold panning, leading to such incidents of illegal mining.

Nine People Arrested For Illegal Gold Mining At NUST Campus

Lecturers at the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/National_University_of_Science_and_Technology">National University of Science and Technology (NUST)</a> have said they will not be reporting for duty citing incapacitation following the removal of transport allowances.
The lecturers cited incapacitation in their letter to NUST Vice Chancellor after their transport allowances were removed on Thursday. 
In a letter seen by NewZimbabwe, NUST Educators’ Association (NUSTEDA) president Mlamuli Dlamini, said:

 This letter serves to inform your office of the resolution by the NUSTEDA constituency in a general meeting held on campus this morning (9 March 2023). 
All NUSTEDA members are incapacitated to report for duty with immediate effect.
The NUSTEDA membership highlighted that this incapacitation results from the unilateral removal of the transport allowance by the NUST management and the depreciation of the buying power of the salary.

Civil servants in Zimbabwe, such as teachers, doctors, and nurses, have gone on strike many times in recent years to demand better pay and working conditions. 
The strikes have caused disruptions in public services. 
The government has responded by threatening to fire striking workers and hiring temporary staff, but the strikes continue because the underlying issues of low pay and poor working conditions remain unresolved. 
These strikes reflect the economic and political challenges in Zimbabwe, including high inflation, low economic growth, and government corruption.
Recently, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/govt-pay-hike-offer-to-civil-servants-revealed/">workers rejected the pay hike offer</a> the government made at the National Joint Negotiation Council (NJNC) meeting that was held in Harare in the first week of March. 
The civil servants’ demand through ZCPSTU was US$840 salaries, an increase on the US$540 that they have long been clamouring for.

NUST Lecturers Down Tools Citing Incapacitation

Nine people, including five <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/National_University_of_Science_and_Technology">National University of Science and Technology (NUST)</a> students, died after they were involved in a road accident along the Masvingo-<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mbalabala">Mbalabala</a> road on Thursday.
In an obituary seen by Pindula News, NUST’s Chaplaincy Office said the accident occurred near <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Filabusi_District_Hospital">Filabusi</a>. Reads the obituary:

Dear All,
The Chaplaincy Office wishes to notify the NUST community of the passing on of five (5) of our students. A dark cloud has fallen upon our horizon. We have been thrown into deep mourning. We are troubled, devastated, and left bereft of words. We cannot ask God WHY? We do not have answers either. May the Lord comfort the NUST Community and the families. This is a disaster and may God help us. The following students were confirmed dead after a road traffic accident and their next of kin were informed by the Zimbabwe Republic Police at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Filabusi_District_Hospital">Filabusi</a> station.

4. RUTENDO NYANGANI (NO2215878L, BSc Degree in Quantity Survey Part 1) (The family has since collected the body of their deceased daughter and travelled to Mhondoro Ngezi, for burial on Sunday, 05.03.2023. The family originally comes from Mutare, Manicaland).
5. MASIMBA MUSHAYIKWA (NO2213504H, BSc Hons Degree in Accounting Part 1) (Family has planned for service at 09:00hrs on Saturday, 04.03.2023 at 14026 Anaboom Road, Thorngrove, Bulawayo. After the service, the family departs for Renko Mine, Masvingo to lay their beloved to rest on Sunday).

The accident occurred at around 4.30 pm when the students were travelling back to Bulawayo after attending a funeral. 
The bodies of the victims were taken to Filabusi District Hospital awaiting post-mortem.

5 NUST Students Die In An Accident

The father of the 9-year-old Tsholotsho girl who recently gave birth at United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH), has been released from prison.
The 29-year-old was <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/update-9-year-old-pregnant-girl-doesnt-know-shes-pregnant-father-arrested/">arrested on 29 August 2022</a> when it was discovered that his daughter was pregnant.
He was accused of raping and impregnating her after she allegedly told social workers that her father told her that “goblins will visit her at night and insert something in her private parts.”
He has been languishing in remand prison since his arrest.
However, DNA tests conducted by the National University of Science and Technology revealed on 25 November <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/dna-test-show-that-father-of-9-year-old-girl-is-not-responsible-for-the-pregnancy/">that he was not the father.</a>
The results said the girl’s 13-year-old cousin had impregnated her.
The father wept in the dock after Prosecutor Mr Acumen Khuphe <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/magistrate-frees-father-of-9-year-old-tsholotsho-girl/">announced that he was a free man.</a> He said:

The state has decided to set you free since the DNA results have proven that you are not the father of your daughter’s child.
</blockquote>
In his ruling, Bulawayo regional magistrate Mark Dzira said the court has no reason to hold him as the recent DNA results from NUST exonerated him.

Father Of 9-year-old Tsholotsho Girl Has Been Released From Prison

The College Lecturers Association of Zimbabwe has said the issue of lecturers leaving the country for greener pastures abroad has become a trend.
This has left Zimbabwe’s tertiary institutions facing acute staff shortages, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200004316/staff-shortage-hits-zim-universities">NewsDay</a> reported citing College Lecturers Association of Zimbabwe president David Dzatsunga.
He said the brain drain at universities intensified this year. Dzatsunga said:

The issue of lecturers leaving colleges has been happening for some years and has become a trend.
</blockquote>
It is said that some universities and colleges recruited underqualified lecturers to replace skilled personnel which left the country for greener pastures a development that is reportedly compromising the quality of learning.
Some institutions are reportedly relying on part-time lecturers. 
Students’ representatives told NewsDay yesterday that the lack of lecturers at the institutions had disrupted learning, resulting in longer semesters.
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/National_University_of_Science_and_Technology">National University of Science and Technology (NUST)</a> was forced to postpone some of its examinations scheduled for last week because students had not completed their modules due to a shortage of lecturers. 
University and college workers have in recent years embarked on periodic strikes over poor salaries and risky working conditions.

“The Issue Of Lecturers Leaving Zimbabwe Has Become A Trend" - Lecturers Association

Bulawayo City Council (BCC) blames poor supervisory duties for the death firefighter who was burnt while fighting a veld fire at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST).
The local authority has also partially attributed the accident to the late firefighter – Fanyana Dick Shuluma – for failure to properly use some of the firefighting protection equipment. 
The firefighter, who is survived by a wife, two sons and a daughter, died two days after the incident at Mater Dei Hospital.
Retired Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer Mr Richard Peterson said it was impossible for a firefighter of Shuluma’s calibre who served for nearly a quarter of a century to have been burnt by a veld fire to the extent of dying, according to <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/firefighter-death-inquiry-results-out/">The Sunday News</a>. 
According to findings of the internal inquiry, it was established that the Fire Brigade crew, among other issues, failed to use provided radio communication equipment among themselves. Reads the report in part:

The committee noted that the supervisor, Mr Manob Zhou did not execute his duties conscientiously. He worked on an assumption of the trainee that the late Mr Shuluma had joined the other group and withdrew one from the deceased’s crew without consultation. Upon realising that one employee was missing, procedurally the supervisor was supposed to suspend operations until the missing employee was accounted for.
Non-use of the face visor by the deceased contributed to the severity of the injuries on face. Failure by the brigade crew to use the provided radio communication equipment also hindered effective distant communication among the teams.
As a result, the deceased was unable to signal distress early for rescue. The strength and the unanticipated shift in the direction of the wind may have impaired the employee’s judgement of the fire direction and also the presence of tall dry grass in the area of operation fuelled the fire. Furthermore, the thicket may also have been a hindrance to the employee’s safe escape from the fire.

<h2>The report further notes that:</h2>
The firefighters were divided into three groups with three members each.
Shuluma was assigned to command the third group which was to do controlled burning moving towards the road leading to NUST’s second gate. The other members of his team were Ms Buhlebethu Ngwenya, a trainee firefighter and Mr Khohlwani Moyo, a firefighter. 
Mr Moyo led, followed by Ngwenya while Shuluma was at the tail end of the formation. 
A few minutes later Mr Monab Zhou summoned Moyo to leave Shuluma’s team and come and assist him.
Zhou later decided to leave Moyo to go and monitor the progress of the other teams. 
On his way, he met trainee firefighter Buhlebenkosi Ngwenya and enquired about the whereabouts of Shuluma to which Ngwenya said they assumed Shuluma had joined the other team.
The team was later informed by the NUST security personnel that they had heard screams for help which upon investigation turned out to be Shuluma.

Supervisor Blamed For Death Of BCC Firefighter At NUST

Nqobile Ngwenya, a National University of Science and Technology  (NUST) student has narrated how his family was attacked by 10 armed robbers on Monday morning at home in Cowdray Park.
The 23-year-old who is a final year Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering student at NUST still had his face covered in scars, bandages and stitches when he spoke to <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/10-armed-robbers-attack-survivor-tells-of-ordeal-from-hospital-bed/">Chronicle</a>.
He said his family went to bed at around 10 PM on Sunday after he was done with his presentation that he was supposed to submit the next day.
At around 2 AM, the armed robbers pounced.
He was axed eight times on the head. He narrated:
<blockquote>
At around 2 in the morning, I was awakened by my mother screaming. I then rushed to her room to see what was happening and surprisingly I found a man in her room who was choking her and pointing a knife at her. When my younger sister heard our mother screaming, she ran and hid behind a couch in the sitting room. The moment I tried to talk to the man to let go of my mother, the other men came from behind me and axed my head and I fell down. They did not give me any chance at that moment as they also hit me with sticks, planks and one of them took a garden fork that was in the house and plucked out my eye and left it hanging.
</blockquote>
He also has injuries on his neck, shoulders, arms and hands that he used to try and defend himself with.
He said every time he told the robbers to leave his mother alone, he was struck with an axe on the head and beaten up. He said he was struck about eight times on the head.
His mother, Mrs Nokuthula Ngwenya (46), said the men were not wearing any masks to cover their faces but they couldn’t identify any of them.
Mrs Ngwenya said she thinks the armed robbers came with a car as they were passing goods they stole from the house over the fence.
She said they took her passport and national identification card, cooking pots a 42-inch plasma television, a Huawei P9, a mobicel and Nokia 1280 phones and a 12 volts light solar battery.
The armed robbers went and came back for the second time after about 20 minutes demanding that she gives them her daughter who is 12 years old but she refused and they went away. 
Mrs Ngwenya said her daughter is traumatised by the whole incident and does not want to stay in the family house that they were attacked in anymore. 
She said neighbours heard them screaming but they were afraid to come out as most of them were ladies and there was nothing they could possibly do. 
Nqobile was taken to Mpilo hospital at around past three. From Mpilo Central Hospital, he was referred to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) for further treatment.

NUST Student Narrates How His Family Was Attacked By Armed Robbers

State universities in the country have raised their tuition fees for the August to December 2022 semester citing the need to cover operational costs.
Lupane State University (LSU) released its new fee structure effective 1 August 2022 with the fees ranging from $179 000 to a high of $472 500. Read a notice to students:

The fees as contained in the LSU Fees Ordinance Number 1 of 2022 effective from 1 August 2022 to 31 December 2022. The fees are charged per semester. Students are required to pay 60 percent fees and register.

<h2>Fees per Faculty:</h2>
<blockquote>
1). Faculties of Agricultural Sciences and Engineering and Applied Sciences – $285 000 per semester 
2). Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences – $279 750 
3). Diplomas – $298 000.
4). Faculty of Commerce – $179 750 for this semester
5). Post-graduate degree students – $472 500.
6). Students in conventional programmes – $100 000 for accommodation 
7). Students on block release – $40 000 before residence allocation.

LSU director of marketing and public relations Mr Zwelithini Dlamini said they had adjusted levies and not tuition fees, according to <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/universities-adjust-fees-structures/">Sunday News</a>.
The University of Zimbabwe has, however, proposed that students who are unable to pay tuition fees must be enrolled in a work-study programme that caters for students unable to cover the costs. 
UZ also introduced payment plans to ensure that students can pay their fees in a convenient and flexible manner.
Discounts for tuition fees have also been introduced at UZ with those that pay 100 percent of fees enjoying a 12.5 percent discount, those that pay 75 percent will enjoy a 10 percent discount while those that are able to pay 50 percent will get a five percent discount, only if all these payments are made by 31 October. 
They, however, maintained that no student was going to miss out on learning time or fail to write examinations due to non-payment of tuition.
The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has requested that students pay between $270 420 and $284 700 for undergraduate degrees while post-graduate degree programmes will see students parting with between $360 000 and $714 000 per semester. The university also announced that students can make payment plans to clear their fees with a requirement of 60 percent of total fees being paid in order for them to register.

State Universities Raise Fees, UZ Introduces Discounts

The government has reportedly seized the farm belonging co-owned by the son of the late former Chief Whip of ZAPU, the late <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Sydney_Malunga">Sydney Malunga</a> and is set to subdivide it and give it to some members of the public.
Malunga’s son, Siphosami Malunga, an international human rights lawyer co-owns the farm together with the director of the National University of Science and Technology’s (Nust) Applied Genetics Testing Centre Zephaniah Dhlamini, and Charles Moyo.
Siphosami Malunga, the Open Society of Southern Africa (OSISA) executive director in Johannesburg, South Africa announced the development. He said in a statement:
<blockquote>_Today we received a call from Mr Dodzi at the Lands Office in Bulawayo to tell us that the Zim Govt has acquired our privately owned farm &amp; tomorrow they are coming peg it &amp; give it to people they have allocated it to. This isn’t about land reform &amp; we will fight it in every way._

Malunga and his colleagues registered the land in question under a deed of transfer 1980/90, under the name of Kershelmar Farms (Private) Limited.
They grow tomatoes, cabbages and other vegetables and employ 45 full-time workers at the highly productive farm in Nyamandlovu near Bulawayo.
Bulawayo24 was told by some senior government officials that the seizure was clearly political and vindictive against the Malunga family which has always been outspoken on democracy, human rights and accountability issues.

Laws and policies prohibit the state from taking farms from black Zimbabweans, especially those who bought the properties.
Moreover, the farm was not gazetted for acquisition until 18 December 2020 after a frantic campaign by local politicians to seize it from the Malungas.
The government led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa has since dethroning Robert Mugabe in 2017 seized farms belonging to a number of former senior government officials, a move that is also viewed as vindictive.
Some of the politicians who lost their land are Jonathan Moyo, Saviour Kasukuwere, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/06/17/mugabes-nephew-loses-farm-dispute-with-kirsty-coventry/">Robert Zhuwao,</a> and Grace Mugabe.

Farm "Owned" By OSISA Director Malunga Seized

The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has appointed Dr William Msekiwa Goriwondo as Pro-Vice-Chancellor in charge of innovation and business development.
Dr Musekiwa has been the institution’s Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.

The Pro-VC post fell vacant following the departure of Dr Gatsha Mazithulela, who was last year appointed deputy director-general in the President’s Department. NUST announced the development in a statement that reads in part:
<blockquote>_The National University of Science and Technology (Nust) Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr William Msekiwa Goriwondo as Pro-Vice-Chancellor — Innovation and Business Development with effect from May 2021._
_Dr Goriwondo has 24 years of experience in technical, engineering, operational and strategic leadership in industry and academia._</blockquote>
The statement also notes that Dr Goriwondo started his working career as a graduate engineer in 1997 at BP and Shell marketing services where he rose through the ranks to positions of plant engineer, continuous improvement manager, and health safety and environmental manager.
In 2002, he was appointed engineering services manager for BP &amp; Shell marketing services and Castrol Zimbabwe. Two years later, Dr Goriwondo joined Turnall Fibre Cement as a production manager before leaving the industry in 2006 to join the Nust as a lecturer.
Dr Goriwondo is a registered professional engineer with a Master of Science degree in Manufacturing Systems and Operations Management attained from the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) and a PhD in Business Administration (Nust).
He is a member of the Institute of Directors Zimbabwe Engineers (IoDZ), fellow and board member of the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers (ZIE).
Dr Goriwondo is also a member of the Zisco Steel Advisory Committee on technical issues.

NUST Fills The Pro-Vice-Chancellor Innovation & Business Dvpt Post

Three students at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) tested positive for the coronavirus on May 29 amid plans to reopen tertiary institutions next week.
The development was confirmed by Dr Welcome Mlilo, the provincial medical director for Bulawayo who however said could not reveal the identity of the patients due to patient confidentiality regulations. Mlilo said:
<blockquote>I can confirm that we had three positive tests on May 29, but I’m bound by patient confidentiality not to discuss their locations and other specifics that can lead to their identification. We have had cases where patients have been identified leading to some unsavoury public lynching, and that’s not helpful.</blockquote>
Higher and Tertiary Education Minister Professor Amon Murwira said he had not been briefed about the three cases, but insisted that universities would still re-open as scheduled as the said cases are no longer a threat to other students since they are now in isolation.
Tertiary institutions were slated to reopen next week in phases starting next week and NUST is scheduled to re-open on June 8 for final year students from the faculties of Applied Science; Commerce; Engineering and The Built Environment.
Meanwhile, teachers are resisting government plans to re-open schools later this month, starting with final year classes in Grade 7, Form 4 and Upper Sixth.

3 NUST Students Test Positive For COVID-19

Recently, a students’ representative association, the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/04/16/students-representative-body-rejects-e-learning-proposals/">Zimbabwe National Students’ Union (Zinasu), through its spokesperson Allan G Mawaya, rejected the proposal by most institutions of higher learning to roll out e-learning programmes during the 21-day lockdown</a> on the grounds that it is impracticable given the acute digital divide between the “haves and have-nots.”
Learning institutions suggested the holding of lectures virtually since the emergence of coronavirus resulted in the banning of gatherings.
Nkosilathi Lesley Ngwenya, a columnist for The Standard says that rejecting the proposal in toto was illogical. Ngwenya said:
<blockquote>Therefore, instead of resisting all e-learning initiatives, a better approach is for the lecturers and students to look for such innovative ways, which will facilitate learning through appropriate digital means at a more affordable cost…
Indeed there is danger in reckless change, but there is even greater danger in blind conservativism, hence, to that end, maintaining the status quo will not benefit local universities and polytechnic colleges in the long-term.</blockquote>
Other learning institutions have before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic been offering online courses giving students from other countries the opportunity to learn from the comfort of their homes.

"There Is Even Greater Danger In Blind Conservativism," As ZINASU Rejects E-Learning Proposal

The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has dismissed reports which suggest that two 2nd year  Journalism and Media Studies students who fought last week during a lecture were fighting over a lecturer.
The academic learning institution also said that it will take disciplinary measures on the duo describing the two students’ behaviour as childish.
The Chronicle reported on the 22nd of this month that the two female students are said to very close friends and the cause of the messy fight is still unknown although speculation has it that they were fighting over a lecturer.
Witnesses, however, said that one of the girls had claimed that her friend had dropped her phone resulting in it cracking the screen.
When allegedly confronted her over the issue while uttering some words, her friend slapped her thereby triggering the fight.
