The Sesame Bridge which links Nembudziya and Gokwe South District, was recently destroyed by heavy floods. As a result, travellers on both sides of the bridge were left stranded and unable to cross. 
Ms Netsai Mushauri, the chairperson of the civil protection committee in Gokwe South District, confirmed the unfortunate incident and warned travellers about the dangerous conditions. She said:

Please be advised that Sesame Bridge (after CMB, on way to Nembudziya) has been swept away cutting passage of vehicles and pedestrians. Please do not attempt to cross the flooded river by any other means as it is very dangerous. You are therefore advised to use the Kadoma Sanyati Road to access Nembudziya.

Information Secretary Nick Mangwana also verified the destruction of the Sesame Bridge.
The incident sparked discussions on social media, with some people blaming corruption for the failure to properly maintain public infrastructure. They argued that substandard work was often a result of government officials awarding construction contracts to their friends, who prioritised personal gain over quality.
Concerns were raised about the time it would take to repair the bridge and the need for regular inspections and maintenance. Many people highlighted the importance of proper infrastructure management and the consequences of neglecting such responsibilities.
Every year in Zimbabwe, heavy rains cause significant damage to roads and bridges, rendering certain areas inaccessible. This poses a serious problem for travellers and residents who rely on these infrastructure networks. Unfortunately, some people even lose their lives while attempting to cross flooded rivers where bridges have been destroyed.
The destruction of roads and bridges by rains has a profound impact on the affected communities. It disrupts transportation, making it difficult for people to access essential services such as schools, hospitals, and markets. This isolation can have severe consequences, especially in emergency situations when timely access to medical care or supplies is critical.
Furthermore, the destruction of infrastructure hampers economic activities in the affected areas. It becomes challenging for farmers to transport their produce to markets, leading to financial losses and food shortages. Businesses may struggle to receive supplies or deliver their products, negatively impacting local economies and employment opportunities.
The recurring nature of these incidents highlights the importance of investing in resilient infrastructure and effective maintenance systems. Proper planning, regular inspections, and timely repairs can help mitigate the impact of heavy rains and prevent the loss of lives and property.
Infrastructure development is an important focus area in the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), which aims to help Zimbabwe achieve its Vision 2030 of becoming an upper-middle-income country. The government started repairing and improving major roads across the country in recent years. However, the progress of these works was halted because there was not enough money available.

Sesame Bridge Which Links Nembudziya And Gokwe South District Destroyed By Heavy Floods

Rural district councils in Zimbabwe have been urged to work diligently and efficiently to deliver quality services to rural communities, while also promoting transparency and accountability. The Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Winston Chitando, made this statement during the 17th Association of Rural District Councils Chief Executive Officers Forum Annual Conference in Nyanga. Minister Chitando emphasised the vital role that local authorities play in achieving Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 of becoming an upper middle-class economy.
In his address, Minister Chitando stated that the goal of transforming the country into an upper middle-income economy by 2030 requires the active participation and cooperation of rural district councils, <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/local-authorities-urged-to-foster-accountability-culture/">Manica Post</a> reported. These local authorities are responsible for implementing various development projects and programs that contribute to the overall vision of the country. He said:

The local authorities must devise strategies to ensure that every city, town and rural district council achieve the desired outcomes. The aim should be to support the President’s Vision 2030 as he has urged everyone to collaborate and provide quality service to the majority of the people. This requires teamwork and therefore the need for everyone’s contribution and commitment.
There is nothing you achieve without a plan. The right tone has been set by President Mnangagwa who established a national blueprint that guides local authorities and helps enhance their performance and service delivery.

Vision 2030 aims to improve the accountability, transparency, efficiency, and effectiveness of local authorities. It also encourages a culture of innovation, collaboration, and citizen participation. The document is aligned with the National Development Strategy (NDS1) and the devolution agenda, which aim to empower local authorities to address the needs and aspirations of their people.
Minister Chitando assured the Association of Rural District Councils that the ministry would support their people-centred programs in implementing the President’s blueprint, thereby ensuring quality service delivery to the voters. The permanent secretary of the ministry, Dr. John Basera, also emphasized the importance of teamwork in achieving the objectives of the ministry and the President’s vision. He called for effective collaboration among local authorities to ensure the successful implementation of the blueprint.
Most rural areas in Zimbabwe are poor as depicted by the infrastructure found there or lack thereof. There is a huge divide in development, income, and opportunities between rural and urban areas. Analysts worry that even if Zimbabwe becomes a middle-upper-income country by 2023, rural communities will still be very poor. Although the constitution says that power should be given to local areas through devolution, services are still centralised because of a lack of resources and political willingness. This slows down progress and makes it harder to provide important things like healthcare and education to rural areas.

Rural District Councils Urged To Deliver Quality Services To Rural Communities

The government has begun a consultative process with key stakeholders leading to the formulation of a comprehensive Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Formalisation Strategy.
Under the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), the blueprint that guides the country’s development between 2021 to 2025, unlocking the potential of SMEs is one of the critical steps towards fostering inclusive economic transformation.
SMEs have become dominant economic players in Zimbabwe but a majority of them still operate informally hence the need to prioritise the development of SMEs and facilitate their formalisation.
This would be achieved partly through the provision of decent workplaces, facilitating access to finance, skills training and information sharing, among others.
The interventions, which are coordinated by the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, are expected to increase both incomes and productivity of the informal sector workers. Reads the ministry statement shared with different stakeholders:

The Government of Zimbabwe through the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprise will be conducting public consultative meetings with all stakeholders in the informal sector on the development of the formalisation strategy and the consultations will be held in all provinces from 22 to 26 November 2021.

The consultative processes began Monday in Gutu in Masvingo province and Hwange in Matabeleland North.
Today the teams will be in Masvingo Central followed by Lupane tomorrow and Bulawayo on Thursday.
Nyanga in Manicaland and Plumtree in Matabeleland South will be covered on Friday. Input from these platforms will be used to guide the formalisation process.
While the informal sector is already contributing much to the economy, experts say the hard-to-tax sector can contribute more towards the transformation of the economy if it is formalised.
