A truck driver, Cosmas Kazuzu, is in trouble after he allegedly posed as “Matinyadze” from Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga’s office and threatened Douglas Zimbango, the CEO of Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC), to reinstate the suspended human resources manager, Lavet Wadawarewa.
As reported by <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200034555/trucker-in-trouble-for-name-dropping-chiwenga">NewsDay</a>, Kazuzu is accused of making multiple calls to Zimbango, threatening to expose ZCDC officials’ alleged involvement in diamond theft if the suspension was not lifted.
He appeared before magistrate Tapiwa Banda and was remanded in custody, with a bail application expected this Tuesday.
On August 5, Kazuzu allegedly contacted Zimbango, claiming to have documents incriminating him in theft and fraud involving diamonds at ZCDC.
On August 12, he reportedly sent a text message to Zimbango, threatening him with dismissal if the charges against Wadawarewa were not dropped.
Kazuzu is being represented by lawyer Scott Panashe Mamimine.
It is further alleged that on August 16 Kazuzu contacted Elias Mvere, the chief security officer at ZCDC, identifying himself as Matinyadze from Vice-President Chiwenga’s office to inquire about the suspension of human resources manager Lavet Wadawarewa.
During the conversation, Kazuzu claimed to have a document detailing criminal activities at ZCDC involving the complainant and other senior managers. He threatened to take the document to Chiwenga if the disciplinary charges were not withdrawn.
Kazuzu sent a document titled “Developments @ ZCDC” to Mvere via his mobile phone, instructing that it be forwarded to the complainant.
The document allegedly contained allegations of theft and fraud against the complainant and other senior managers at ZCDC.
Mvere raised a complaint with ZCDC CEO Douglas Zimbango, sharing the document via WhatsApp.
Investigations by the police led to Kazuzu’s arrest.

Truck Driver In Trouble For Posing As VP Chiwenga's Aide

A five-man gang of armed extortionists, who allegedly posed as military intelligence and police officers, is accused of extorting mining companies in the Matabeleland region while invoking the name of the First Family.
As reported by <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200031845/eds-son-is-our-boss-armed-robbers">NewsDay</a>, three of the suspects—Munyaradzi Charakupa, Victor Jaja, and Tawanda Mangi—appeared before Bulawayo Magistrate Evelyn Madzikatire on Tuesday. They face charges of impersonating public officials, attempted extortion, and extortion.
The suspects, who are being represented by Bryan Sengweni, were remanded in custody to Thursday.
Superintendent Edmore Runganga, the investigating officer, opposed their bail, arguing that they were a flight risk since their accomplices remained at large.
The suspects were exposed after they targeted some mines in which prominent Bulawayo lawyer Dumisani Dube is an interested party.
It is alleged that the suspects resorted to extorting money from the complainants to challenge a corporate rescue certificate that was held by Dube.
Runganga argued that if they were granted bail, they would interfere with witnesses since the racket seemed to be involving police officers and government officials.
The gang was apprehended after Dube sought assistance from President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s son, Sean, and the Attorney-General’s Office, following persistent extortion attempts targeting mining firms associated with Dube.
In his statement, Dube said Sean disowned the gang and he told him to report it.
It is alleged that in February 2024, Jaja visited Dube’s office, falsely presenting himself as the former Officer-in-Charge of Beitbridge police now assigned to the President’s Office as part of the Police Protection Unit.
Jaja purportedly claimed he was on Sean’s security team, with Mangi as his superior.
Jaja and Mangi were allegedly accompanied by Charakupa and Pemba, who falsely identified themselves as military intelligence members assigned to protect the late War Veterans permanent secretary Clive Mphambela’s interests in Matabeleland.
Prosecutors also alleged that the suspects possessed a file containing special grant applications for Matabeleland South, including those of three of Dube’s mining clients.
They reportedly threatened to cancel these applications unless a protection fee of US$300,000 was paid to Sean, their purported boss.
Dube, in a statement signed at the CID Law and Order section, confirmed his refusal to pay the extortion fee. He said:

A month later, on April 24, 2024, I was appointed corporate rescue practitioner of Fools Investment (Pvt) Ltd by the Master of High Court under CRPB 1/24.
The accused subsequently came to my office claiming to be directors of Fools Investment and demanded US$ 200,000 each. Jaja showed me an official card from the Office of the President as his identification.

On the third count, the court heard that they attempted to extort Dube’s client of US$ 800,000.
The prosecution alleges that in the fourth count, the accused and their accomplices, who remain at large, on July 23, 2024, threatened to kill Dube unless he complied with their demands.
Following these threats, Dube was coerced into surrendering US$40,000 to Mangi.
In the fifth count, the four individuals allegedly compelled Dube to cover their accommodation expenses for three months during their purported special operation.
Under duress, Dube paid them US$4,000 and US$1,800 in the presence of Pemba and Daka after they threatened his life.
In total, they extorted US$55,300 from Dube on several occasions. A report was subsequently made to the police, leading to the arrest of the three suspects.

A group of bad guys pretended to be military and police officers to extort money from mining companies in Matabeleland. They used the name of the President's son to scare people. The gang demanded a lot of money from the companies. They were caught after one of the companies asked for help from the President's son and the Attorney-General. The gang also tried to force a lawyer to pay them money. They threatened the lawyer many times until he gave them over $55,000. Finally, the police caught three of the gang members.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Sunday warned against the propensity by some people to abuse their proximity to high ranking officials to seek favours and benefits.
Mnangagwa was speaking at the burial of Major General (Rtd) Clever Shadreck Chiramba at the National Heroes Acre in Harare on Sunday. He said:
<blockquote>We have lost a selfless team player and a true revolutionary cadre. He was also a God-fearing man. Chiramba remained astute, versatile and a responsible cadre who served for and looked after strategic armaments in the fight for our revolution.
Although he trained and deputised commanders who occupied high positions, he never claimed such associations to be a right to access privileges or benefits.
Under the Second Republic, proximity or relations with those holding public positions should never be a basis whatsoever to access favours or benefits.</blockquote>
At one time, Chiramba was deputy to now Vice President Constantino Chiwenga who was the commander of the Five Brigade in Gweru in the 1980s.
Last year, ZANU PF Secretary for Finance, who was Acting Secretary for Information and Publicity, Patrick Chinamasa, described “name dropping” as a disease. He said:
<blockquote>Name dropping – it’s a disease. The ZANU PF revolutionary party is declaring war on name droppers.
Here at ZANU PF, we have fired some of these name droppers, conmen and con-women who abuse the name of the party leadership.
They allege they are relatives of senior leaders and go about conning people in the name of our leadership. That should stop forthwith.</blockquote>
At the time, Chinamasa also criticised Mnangagwa’s relatives for attempting to influence and interfere with the president’s duties.

Mnangagwa Warns 'Name-droppers'

The ruling ZANU PF party says it has fired several officials for name-dropping with more expected to be axed.
The party’s acting spokesperson, Patrick Chinamasa, told the media on Wednesday that conmen and malcontents who abuse the name of the First Family and the party will be named and shamed. He said:
<blockquote>We have noted with concern that these name-droppers are abusing the names of senior leaders in the party, Government and the First Family.
They allege that they are relatives of senior leaders and go about conning people in the name of our leadership.
That should stop forthwith. Here at the party, we have fired some of these name-droppers, conmen and con-women who abuse the name of the party and leadership.
We challenge all media players to expose these fraudsters and extortionists whenever you come across them.
In the next press conference after full investigations, we will name and shame them.</blockquote>
ZANU PF has reportedly fired four employees and suspended another four from various departments for abusing the names of the party leadership.
Recently, suspended Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF) president Henrietta Rushwaya claimed that members of the First Family were involved in her attempted 6kgs gold heist.
