The National Aids Council (NAC) has warned that Zimbabwean men may soon need to include condoms in their budgets, as donors are starting to scale down support for HIV response measures, reported NewsDay.
Speaking at the recent Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Minerals Workers Union’s Gwanda regional meeting, NAC representative Abraham Ncube cautioned that free condom distribution may not be sustainable soon.
Ncube explained that 3% is currently being deducted from workers’ salaries as an Aids Levy, with 50% of these funds going towards the procurement of antiretrovirals (ARVs). He added:

This is not enough and it is being supplemented by donors who then come in such as Global Fund and other international donors who come with other funds to procure ARVs as well as some prevention commodities like condoms.
Maybe we need to be aware that donors are now scaling down in general in terms of supporting the HIV response.
Meaning to say where we thought we were entitled to free condoms, maybe it’s about time we should start thinking of having a condom budget as responsible people.
If you are a man and say at my home there are no condoms, well that is food for thought. We need to come out of that dependence syndrome and think in terms of us being independent.

Ncube said part of the Aids Levy was used to acquire ARVs while the remainder was used for other response programmes such as prevention activities.

Free Condom Distribution In Zimbabwe Under Threat

The National Aids Council (NAC) has donated more than ZWL$300 million to the Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM).
The donation was handed over by NAC chief executive officer Bernard Madzima to Deputy Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Lovemore Matuke on Friday at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF).
He said the money is for the payment of school fees and covering expenses for the vulnerable children so that they continue attending school thereby reducing the risk of contracting HIV. Said Madzima:

I am honoured to hand over our contribution towards BEAM for 2023. This financial assistance is coming from the Nac Trust fund generally known as Aids levy.
As a country, we have achieved the 2025 95-95-95 targets and we are so proud of that milestone.
Despite this achievement, we are looking at around 500 000 affected children who are orphaned or now vulnerable due to HIV and AIDS hence this donation will ensure they have access to shelter, education and food.
This donation is part of our comprehensive approach to HIV prevention.
For over a decade now we have been contributing towards BEAM and I can safely say we cater for at least 10 per cent of the BEAM’s yearly budget.
We work towards the reduction of HIV and addressing education needs helps us reduce new infections.
This will help us achieve our target of ending AIDS as a public health concern by 2030.

95-95-95 means that 95 per cent of infected individuals know their status, 95 per cent of those infected are on medication and 95 per cent of those on medication achieve viral suppression.
BEAM is a Government-run programme aimed at providing financial assistance to vulnerable children who are in need of support to access education.
BEAM supports orphaned and vulnerable children aged between six and 19 and about 1.8 million children are being assisted under the programme.

National AIDS Council Donates $300 Million To BEAM

The fishing camps dotted around Lake Kariba and have become hotspots for fish for sex which involves sex workers trading sex for fish.
This was said by National Aids Council (NAC) chief executive Bernard Madzima on Monday.
<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200010025/kariba-fishermen-in-sex-for-fish-trade">NewsDay</a> reported Madzima as saying the sex for fish trade was hampering efforts to reduce the prevalence of HIV and AIDS in Zimbabwe.
Madzima noted that prostitution in fishing camps was leading to a new wave of HIV infections as well as sexually-transmitted infections. He said:

In Kariba, fisheries have been identified as hotspots where there is rampant trade of fish for sex.
There is a new phenomenon where sex workers now cohabit with male fishermen in exchange for fish.
As an organisation, we have trained 10 female peer sex workers and 10 male peer fishermen to conduct HIV and AIDS peer education and condom distribution in Kariba where this issue is rampant.

Some of the fishing camps affected by the sex-for-fish practice include Gatshe Gatshe, Ndomo, Musamba, Muchenga in Kariba and Kalulwe, Simatelele and Chibuyu in Binga.
Last year, Zimbabwe became the first African country to approve injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medicine to help reduce the rate of new infections.
PrEP is for people who don’t have HIV and are at risk of getting HIV from sex or injection drug use.
According to CDC, injectable PrEP with CAB is highly effective at protecting patients from HIV and is for adults and adolescents who weigh at least 35 kg and are at risk of getting HIV through sex.
The US Embassy in Zimbabwe said that in 2020, 1.23 million adults in Zimbabwe were living with HIV. This constituted 12.9 percent of the adult population.

Lake Kariba A Hotspot For Fish For Sex Trade - NAC

There has been an increase in the uptake of condoms in the Gweru District where over 600 000 condoms for both females and males have been distributed from January to date.
388 030 condoms were distributed during the same period in 2021.
Petros Mazengwa, who is Gweru District HIV and Aids co-ordinator at the National Aids Council (NAC) told the Chronicle that this is mainly attributed to the role played by Condom Champions (CC) who are supporting the distribution of condoms. Said Mazengwa:

Gweru district has recorded a surge in condom use after over 600 000 condoms both female and male were distributed from January to date. Condoms distributed are 581 709 males and 24 716 females.
A total 388 030 condoms were distributed last year in the district meaning we have a surge in condom distribution this year.

He said the CC volunteers are based in the wards and are involved in condom distribution, monitoring and information dissemination on “combination HIV prevention”. Said Mazengwa:

The district currently has 19 Condom Champions covering all wards. The Condom Champions also support other combination prevention programs by way of creating demand for services like HIV testing services (HTS), voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC), prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT), cancer screening and others.

He said condoms are usually distributed at hotspots like beer outlets, clubs and other public drinking facilities as well as at universities and colleges.

Gweru Records Surge In Condom Distribution

Seke District, in Mashonaland East Province, has a quarterly uptake of 200 000 male condoms while female condoms have a range of 5 000 to 10 000, a National AIDS Council (NAC) official has said.
Speaking to <a href="https://healthtimes.co.zw/2022/12/07/seke-district-uses-200-000-condoms-every-three-months/">Health Times</a> in a recent interview, NAC District AIDS Coordinator (DAC) for Seke District Florence Nyandoro said:

Our quarterly average uptake for male condoms is 200 000 and the female condoms are in the range of 5 000 and 10 000.
What happens is that the awareness on female condoms came way later than that of male condoms.
Otherwise, awareness on the female condom is increasing which has resulted in the improved use of the female condom.
We are telling our community cadres to promote the female condom as much as they do the male condom.
We are hoping with time, the uptake of the female condom will be as high.

Nyandoro also said they have noted that in discordant couples, males would take female condoms for their partners. She said:
<blockquote>
The other commendable thing we have observed is females are also taking male condoms.
There are very few cases in discordant couples where males take the female condom for their partners. This is very interesting.
We are encouraging and promoting the use of condoms because of their dual protection against STIs and HIV.

A discordant couple is a couple in which one partner has a sexually transmitted disease (STD), such as HIV, while the other partner does not.
Nyandoro also dismissed as false claims that some condoms are small because they are manufactured in China. She said:
<blockquote>
That condoms here in Zimbabwe are too small as being made in China is misinformation and a myth.
Alongside our partners, we tell communities that there is no truth in that. Condoms are manufactured in a one size fits all technique.
There is no such thing as condoms being small and unusable. We don’t encourage such mindsets.
If we give people accurate information, this promotes the usage of condoms thus protecting people from unwanted pregnancies, STIs and HIV.

Nyandoro discouraged the use of herbal sex-enhancement drugs, saying people should seek medical advice.

Seke District Uses 200 000 Condoms Every Three Months

Nearly 5 000 babies were infected with HIV in 2021 due to the mothers’ unwillingness to get antiretroviral therapy during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Addressing journalists at a National Aids Council media training workshop in Chinhoyi on Friday, Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) Deputy PMTCT and Paediatric HIV Care and Treatment Coordinator, Dr Precious Andifasi said 4 750 babies got infected during pregnancy and breastfeeding last year alone. She said:

As a program, we collect some data every year just to try and see where the new infections are coming from. So, for 2021, we had about 4 785 new infections. So, these are babies that had HIV transmitted from their mothers.
</blockquote>
Fundira said during pregnancy, 1 345 women did not receive Antiretroviral therapy, and 445 during pregnancy and this resulted in babies getting infected.
She said stigma, discrimination and denial are some of the barriers to accessing PMTCT services. She said:
<blockquote>
Another one of our interventions is to keep the women who are negative, negative. If we look at the barriers to accessing PMTCT services, we can see that stigma, discrimination and denial are significant barriers.
Stigma around people still thinking that HIV only infects those who are immoral or sexually deviant. That they must not be doing something right.
Denial. Not accepting the risk of contracting HIV applies to them. And also shunning those who are infected or perceived to be at risk.

Fundira added that as part of their initiatives to prevent the transmission of HIV from mothers to their children, they are testing every six months if the mother is seroconverted.

5 000 Zimbabwean Babies Infected With HIV In 2021

The National AIDS Council (NAC) says new HIV infections continue to increase among adolescent girls and young women while they are going down in other groups.
Addressing female learners at the commemorations of the International Day of the Girl Child on Tuesday, NAC Bulawayo Provincial AIDS Manager, Sinatra Nyathi said:

Imagine, in all age groups HIV is going down but adolescent girls and young women are getting new infections.
We realise young girls attend vuzu parties, where unplanned pregnancies, HIV, STIs, and other diseases emerge.
As NAC, we are on the path to achieving epidemic control, but we must also prevent further HIV spread.
However, new infections continue to be identified, with adolescent girls and young women being disproportionately affected.
</blockquote>
Nyathi urged young girls to practice abstinence as it is important in HIV prevention. She said:
<blockquote>
You can’t sell your life over that red box of chips yet you can be a Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) girl who is educated and empowered and buy as many of those red boxes as you want.
We can abstain from sex, it’s not necessary to destroy your life. Even if you have started indulging in sexual activity as NAC we have what we call secondary abstinence where someone realises that they are not going anywhere with having sex.
You need to stop having it today and start planning for the future because you will start dying prematurely.
We want girls to take over but girls cannot take over because of the decisions they make. You can still abstain from sex and plan your life.
I always thank God that I didn’t destroy my life over five minutes’ activity of risky sexual behaviours.
