<p><span>Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has removed his son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, as commander of Uganda’s land forces, the military said on Tuesday.</span></p>
<p><span>This was after Kainerugaba repeatedly threatened on Twitter to invade neighbouring Kenya.</span></p>
<p><span>Kainerugaba, widely regarded as the de facto head of the military and his father’s chosen successor, later said the comments were made in jest. He posted on Twitter:</span></p>

<p><span><em>It wouldn’t take us, my army and me, 2 weeks to capture Nairobi (Kenya’s capital).</em></span></p>
<p><span><em>Union is a MUST! No honourable men can allow these artificial, colonial borders anymore. If we our generation has men then these borders must fall!.</em></span></p>

<p><span>The military issued a statement announcing his replacement as land forces commander saying Kainerugaba had been promoted from lieutenant general to full general and would remain a senior presidential adviser for special operations. It gave no reason for the decision.</span></p>
<p><span>On Tuesday, Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement pledging its “peaceful co-existence” with neighbouring Kenya. Without mentioning Kainerugaba, the statement read in part:</span></p>

<p><span><em>The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has noted the debate on social media in respect to the relationship between Uganda and Kenya. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to clarify that the government of the Republic of Uganda does not conduct its foreign policy and other official business through social media.</em></span></p>

<p><span>A Kenyan government spokesman said he had not read Uganda’s statement and would respond later.</span></p>
<p><span>President Yoweri Museveni yesterday <strong><a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/president-museveni-apologises-to-ruto-after-his-son-said-uganda-could-capture-nairobi-in-2-weeks/">issued an apology</a></strong> to the recently elected president of Kenya, William Ruto over the matter. </span></p>
<p><span>This is happening when there has been reciprocal violence between pastoralist groups in the Kenyan-Ugandan border region due to livestock raiding and competition for water and pastures. </span></p>
<p><span>More frequent and severe droughts as well as the accumulation of weapons from war-torn neighbouring countries are further worsening this situation. </span></p>

President Yoweri Museveni's Son Fired From Military Role Over Tweet On Invasion Of Kenya

<p><span>Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has issued an apology to the people of Kenya and Uganda after his son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, posted a series of tweets where he joked about invading Italy and neighbouring Kenya. He said on Twitter that his country’s land forces could capture Nairobi in two weeks, a comment that has angered Ugandan opposition leaders and many Kenyans. In a statement seen by Pindula News, Museveni said he had spoken to the recently elected president of Kenya, William Ruto over the matter. Reads the statement:</span></p>

<p><span><em>Dear Ugandans, the brotherly People of Kenya and all East Africans. I greet all of you. Again, I hail the peaceful elections that took place in Kenya recently where H.E. William Ruto emerged winner. I, again, congratulate him on that victory.</em></span></p>

<div><span><em>I ask our Kenyan brothers and sisters to forgive us for tweets sent by General Muhoozi, former Commander of Land Forces here, regarding the election matters in that great country. It is not correct for Public officers, be they civilian or military, to comment or interfere in any way, in the internal affairs of brother countries. The only available legitimate forum is the Peer Review Mechanism of the African Union or confidential interactions among us or EAC and AU fora –not public comments. </em></span></div>
<div><span><em>Why, then, promote him to full General after these comments? This is because this mistake is one aspect where he has acted negatively as a Public officer. There are, however, many other positive contributions the General has made and can still make. This is a time-tested formula –discourage the negative and encourage the positive. Very sorry, ndugu zetu Wakenya. Also sorry to the Ugandans who could have been annoyed by one of their officials meddling in the affairs of brother Kenya. I know for a fact that General Muhoozi is a passionate Pan-Africanist. However, the correct method for Pan-Africanists is confidential interactions or using the available fora (EAC and AU), especially if you are a Public officer. </em></span></div>
