The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of two men in connection with a spate of unlawful entry into premises, robbery and theft cases which occurred in and around Mt Darwin from 29 July 2023 to 27 January 2024.
In a statement issued on 06 February 2024, ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the suspects, Shepherd Kamhandu (19) and Douglas Kaingidza (39), were apprehended by the public in Rushinga, Mt Darwin whilst selling 8 bricks of cigarettes.
Asst Comm Nyathi also appealed for information which may lead to the arrest of Nelson Batsirai Makwengura (30) who allegedly stole 330 tonnes of Polypropylene HKR102 worth US$442 000.
Makwengura’s alleged accomplices, Lesley Nyasha Makaka (30) and Mercy Muza (44) have since been arrested. Reads the statement:

ARREST OF TWO SUSPECTS FOR UNLAWFUL ENTRY INTO PREMISES, ROBBERY AND THEFT CASES – MT DARWIN
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Shepherd Kamhandu (19) and Douglas Kaingidza (39) in connection with a spate of unlawful entry into premises, robbery and theft cases which occurred in and around Mt Darwin during the period extending from 29th July 2023 to 27th January 2024.
On 27th January 2024, the two suspects were apprehended by the public in Rushinga, Mt Darwin whilst selling 8 bricks of cigarettes and were later referred to CID Mt Darwin for further management.
The detectives managed to link the two suspects to a case of unlawful entry and theft which occurred at Kandeya Township, Mt Darwin in which the suspects broke into a shop and stole 100 bricks of Pacific Storm and Breeze cigarettes, 45 bricks of Everest cigarettes, one brick of Madison cigarettes, three crates of Carling Black Label Quarts, one X 750 mls Hunters beer and one X 750 mls Mayfair beer all valued at US$ 1 286.00.
The arrest of the suspects led to the recovery of 70 bricks of cigarettes, various clothes, blankets, a 32-inch television, five gas tanks, jewellery, cell phones and accessories all valued at US$ 1 787.00.
Investigations carried out unearthed that the two suspects were linked to 24 counts of unlawful entry into premises cases, seven counts of robbery cases and four counts of theft cases.
In an unlawful entry into premises case which occurred in Madziwa, Mt Darwin on 06th August 2023, the suspects broke into a shop before stealing a wallet containing US$300.00 cash, various clothes and groceries all valued at US$ 1 000.00.
In another robbery case which occurred in September 2023, the suspects attacked a juvenile (14) who was walking along a footpath from Kandeya Township to the Ridgeview location, before stealing a cell phone and a satchel.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police is appealing for information which may lead to the arrest of Nelson Batsirai Makwengura (30) who is being sought in connection with a case of theft which occurred during the period extending from May 2023 to October 2023.
The suspect allegedly stole 330 tonnes of Polypropylene HKR102 worth US$442 000.00 in connivance with his two accomplices, Lesley Nyasha Makaka (30) and Mercy Muza (44), who were since arrested.

Two Men Arrested Over A Spate Of Break-ins, Robberies In Mt Darwin

Police have barred CCC from holding cluster rallies at Kandeya Village business center and Dotito in Mt Darwin, which were scheduled for 18 August.
In a statement, CCC said they were advised by the Police that the rallies cannot go ahead because the venues have already been booked. Reads the statement:

Our cluster rallies, which were scheduled to take place on Friday, August 18, 2023, at Kandeya Village business center and Dotito in Mt Darwin, have been denied by the [Zimbabwe Republic Police].
These denials come under controversial reasons, as they claim that the venues are already occupied on the same date.
It is evident that this is a systematic approach employed by the regime in Harare to prevent the Citizens movement and its President, Nelson Chamisa, from engaging with the people.
Sadly, these are just some of over 105 rallies and meetings that have been banned on false pretenses and yet we are in the election season.
ZANU PF is running scared and can never win a free and fair election in Zimbabwe.

Police Block CCC Rally Scheduled For Mt Darwin

The Pfura (Mt Darwin) Rural District Council says the hosting of Independence Day celebrations in Mt Darwin has brought with it a lot of benefits to the community.
All the feeder roads in Mt Darwin Township are undergoing maintenance by the local authority and the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA), formerly the District Development Fund (DDF).
Also, the community has seen load-shedding hours being restricted to about four hours daily.
The curtailment of load shedding hours has resulted in improved water supply from ZINWA as it requires a minimum of 18 hours to pump water to all the reservoirs, which supply the eight locations in Mt Darwin.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/independence-celebrations-bring-benefits-to-mt-darwin/">The Herald</a> on Wednesday, Pfura Rural District Council chief executive officer Stanslous Nyachowe, said:

Mt Darwin will never be the same again as the hosting of the celebrations has brought with it a number of infrastructural developments, chief among these being the construction of a new stadium which will be the main venue.
It has changing rooms, public toilets, a tartan athletics track, a security fence, a solar-powered borehole for irrigation and some flood lights are to be installed.
Terraces for the stadium are on the cards as well.
Pfura Stadium is also having a face-lift as the surrounding precast wall, and changing rooms are being upgraded.
The much-needed public toilets, which were non-existent, are under construction and will be ready for use when the children’s party is held on 17 April 2023.
The local authority has also written to all business owners to spruce up their buildings and this is improving the aesthetics of the centre.

Mt Darwin is home to more than 10 000 people, who will benefit from the activities associated with Independence Day celebrations.
The Independence Anniversary Celebrations will be held on 18 April at Mount Darwin High School, Mount Darwin Centre.
The Mt Darwin community will also be treated to Zimbabwe’s biggest football fixture dubbed the Battle of Zimbabwe pitting Dynamos and Highlanders in the Independence Day Cup.
An estimated 45 000 people are expected to attend the Celebrations.
Alick Macheso and Paradzai Mesi will provide entertainment for the main Independence celebrations.

Independence Day Celebrations Expected To Benefit Mt Darwin Community

Veteran <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Broadcasting_Corporation">Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC)</a> journalist, Tinashe Rupende has died.
Rupende (38) who was the Midlands Bureau cameraman, succumbed to kidney failure at Gweru Provincial Hospital on Monday night after a long battle with renal disease.
Scores of journalists, dignitaries and others who worked with the late Rupende gathered in Gweru where they paid their last respects.
Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister, Senator <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Larry_Mavima">Larry Mavima</a>, described the late Rupende as a dedicated and patriotic journalist who was prepared to serve. The Chronicle cites Senator Mavima as saying:
<blockquote>
We lost a dedicated journalist who was always ready to serve his nation despite being down. We always came to pick him up to go long distances like Gokwe and anywhere in the province and he was always there. He was a dedicated journalist who was always there when we needed his services. I am pleased to say he served his nation with pride up until his untimely death.
We call upon all journalists to emulate the late Rupende who was a patriotic and dedicated journalist. This is not a loss to the Midlands fraternity alone, but the nation as a whole. He was someone who had a nose for news, especially his passion to report on issues affecting the rural community.

Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) national executive member, Michael Magoronga, described Rupende as a unique breed of journalist, one not easy to replace. He said:
<blockquote>
He was an experienced journalist who was easy to approach for advice. His shoes are just too big to be filled. We are with his family in this time of mourning.
</blockquote>
His father, Wilson Nyika Rupende said he was yet to come to terms with the loss.
He said the body will be taken to Mt Darwin today, Wednesday, for burial tomorrow. 
Rupende, also known as Bit T, is survived by his wife and two children.

Veteran Journalist Tinashe Rupende Has Died

An 11-year-old girl from <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mount_Darwin">Mt Darwin</a> was found buried in a shallow grave after her mother had sent her to collect debts from two women in the neighbouring village.
In a statement seen by Pindula News, the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Republic_Police">Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)</a> said the girl went missing on the 18th of July and her remains were discovered on the 5th of August. Reads the report:

The ZRP is investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a female juvenile aged 11 who was found buried on the banks of Mutondwe River in Munhondo Village, Mt Darwin, on 05/08/22. 
The victim, who resided in Mun’ando Village, reportedly went missing on 18/07/22 after she was sent to the neighbouring Village by her mother to collect US$10 and US$3 cash owed to her mother by two women, aged 37 and 31. The Police recovered a blood-stained axe handle about 60 metres from the shallow grave.

The police appealed to members of the public who might have information on the case to contact any nearest police station.

An 11-year-old Girl Found Dead After Being Sent To Collect Debts

A police officer stationed in Mt Darwin has been dragged to court for posting a WhatsApp status in which he was singing along to Blessing Shumba’s song “Munyu Hauchavava.” The gospel song which means the “salt is no longer sour/tasty” is used by some to describe the deteriorating state of affairs in Zimbabwe. Police Officer In Trouble Over "Munyu Hauchavava" Song

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has warned serving members against using social media platforms to express discontent over poor salaries.
Videos of police officers protesting economic hardships on social media have gone viral, prompting the ZRP to threaten to take action against its members, whom it says were denigrating the government.
In one 15-second video which is making rounds on social media, an unidentified police officer displays cash in local currency (Zimbabwe dollars), with lyrics in the background song implying that his earnings were no longer enough to meet the cost of living.
In a leaked internal police memorandum dated 3 October 2021, ZRP Mt Darwin district officer commanding ordered all officers-in-charge to identify the members in the videos and take disciplinary action against them. The memo read:
<blockquote>
This headquarters has noted with concern the proliferation of photos and videos on social media platforms where police officers are openly seen denigrating the government, uttering political statements and improperly dressed with some female officers posting sexually seductive photos and videos in full Zimbabwe Republic Police uniform.
This conduct is tarnishing the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s image and is contrary to the dictates of the disciplinary code as espoused in the Police Act [Chapter 11:10.]
Commanders are implored to immediately identify such members and take decisive action which includes disciplinary trials and boards of inquiry (suitability).
</blockquote>
Insiders told NewsDay that low-ranking police officers were earning between $28 000 and $30 000, which is not enough to meet their family monthly needs.
Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch director for southern Africa, Dewa Mavhinga, urged the government to address its workers’ grievances instead of penalising those who spoke out.

ZRP Warns Officers Against Complaining On Social Media

A 41-year-old Mount Darwin man died after consuming too much illicit beer (musombodhiya) at a local shop on Thursday.
Musombodhiya is a cheap and highly addictive street brew that is said to include harmful substances such as cleaning detergents, bicarbonate of soda, thinners, methylated spirit and sugar to make its impact stronger and last longer.
Reports indicate that the now-deceased Stanley Gomo of Zindoga village’s health deteriorated and died on his way to a local hospital.
Acting Mashonaland Central provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Naison Dhliwayo confirmed that Gomo died after drinking beer excessively. He said:

His friend Talent Chaurawa tried to render first aid services and ferried his friend to the hospital, but he died along the way. His body is at Mount Darwin hospital awaiting post-mortem.

In a sad incident that was first reported by the permanent secretary of the Information, Broadcasting and Publicity ministry Ndavaningi Nick Mangawana, 6 people reportedly died after they were mowed down by 2 racing cars as they were on their way for prayers.
Nick Mnagwana used microblogging site Twitter to share the unfortunate incident and had said:
<blockquote>Mt Darwin. 2 cars racing each other mowed down 7 people to death in an RTA at Goora Business Centre on the Bindura- Mt Darwin Highway. All seven were pedestrians who had just alighted from a Kombi, on their way for prayers. A well-known gold buyer is involved.</blockquote>
However, ZRP has released a report on the incident and said 6 people died and one person was severed injured they were taken to Mt Darwin hospital while the bodies of the deceased were taken to a nearby morgue at Mt Darwin Hospital.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is investigating the death of Wendy Chinomungu (25) of Rushinga, who went missing from Mt Darwin Hospital on 20 October and was later found in Concession, some 136km away, two days later unconscious and with her hands tied.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi revealed that it was Chinomungu’s aunt, and not the hospital, who reported the case of a missing person. Said Nyathi:
<blockquote>The matter was reported to the police on October 22 by Feriya Musandirire. We want to establish what really happened.
The post-mortem results indicated that she died from severe head trauma and we want to know whether she was assaulted at home, at the hospital or at Concession where she was later found.</blockquote>
Prior to her hospitalisation at Mt Darwin Hospital, Wendy had been staying with her uncle, Chikuya Chikuya, a brother to her late mother.
Chikuya stays in Mudimu village under Chief Dotito and is married to Fariya Musandirire who was the first to report Wendy’s disappearance to the police while the hospital administrator followed up later.
Reports indicate that before Wendy vanished, some expensive juices and other foodstuffs would be seen on her table daily but no one knew the source.
Musandirire told The Herald that her niece disappeared on October 20 and that the hospital officials were trying to cover-up for their delay in making a police report. She said:
<blockquote>On October 15, we received a text message from Mr Makamba, the matron, telling us that our niece’s health was improving. We asked if we could visit her and he agreed. On that day, we failed to go due to transport challenges.
On October 22, in the morning, we received a text message from the matron again, advising us to go to the hospital and see a nurse called Karasa. Coincidentally, we were planning to visit our niece on that same day.
At first, I thought she had been moved to another bed. I then approached a nurse who was in the ward and she referred me to the sister-in-charge, Mrs Karasa.
We sat down and she told me that my niece was missing from the hospital from October 20. It was so unbelievable and I was hurt.
She indicated to me that the hospital had not made a police report for a missing person, some two days after her disappearance.
She asked me to go and report to the police that my niece was missing from the hospital. Is this how Government hospitals handle issues of this nature?
At first, I refused to go to the police, but I later decided to comply. Police officers treated me well and asked me to bring my niece’s photos to assist in the search. Later in the day, we heard she had been found at Concession.</blockquote>
Some farmworkers in Concession found Wendy lying unconscious and told the farm owner who immediately reported the case to Glendale Police Station.
She was rushed to Concession Hospital and was immediately transferred to Parirenyatwa Hospital where she later died.
A post-mortem report shows that the death was due to “severe head trauma” and there are indications that she was sexually abused.

Police Probe The Death Of A Patient Who Vanished From Mt Darwin Hospital

A senior official at Mt Darwin District Hospital has confirmed the disappearance of a 25-year-old female patient who had been admitted at the institution since the 30th of September.
Wendy Chinomungu of Rushinga was suffering from melancholia (severe depression) and disappeared from her ward on October 20 and was found at Concession, some 136km away, two days later unconscious and with her hands tied.
Some farmworkers in Concession found the woman lying unconscious three days after she left the hospital and told the farm owner who immediately reported the case to Glendale Police Station.
Chinomungu was rushed to Concession Hospital and was immediately transferred to Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare where she later died.
A post-mortem report shows that death was due to “severe head trauma” and there are indications that she had been sexually abused.
Mt Darwin District Hospital senior nursing officer Forbes Makamba confirmed Chinomungu’s disappearance but said he was away when the incident took place. He said:
<blockquote>Yes, I know of the incident. When it happened, I was in Bindura attending a workshop. She was admitted here on September 30 after she was brought in by her relatives.
The relatives had a recommendation letter from a Roman Catholic priest called Father Simoko.
She had melancholia. She was easily irritable and withdrawn. She could hardly walk, talk, bath herself and even eat on her own. She could not do anything on her own.
Her aunt wanted to stay here but I refused because we wanted to examine her and try to establish what could have caused the depression.
We suspected the depression could be a result of some family problems, hence we advised the relatives to stay away a bit and allow her to recover.
After a few days, we noticed some improvements to her health. She was now able to walk and do her laundry.
She was also able to eat, but she still had challenges in walking.
I informed the relatives that they could now visit Wendy. The day they visited, that is when she had absconded from the hospital. I was away.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Makamba’s narration of events contradicted other staff as he insisted that the patient disappeared on October 22, the day when the police report was made.
However, other Hospital staff said Chinomungu vanished two days before when Makamba was still away and the official post-mortem and police documents show that she went missing on October 20. Added Makamba:
<blockquote>I was told that the nurse on duty that night noticed the patient was missing and she informed the security department.
The security details were supposed to immediately report to the administration but they waited until the following morning.
That is when they informed the administrator who later went to the police</blockquote>

Hospital Speaks On Patient Who Vanished And Was Found Motionless 100km Away

Villagers in Mt Darwin have reported 9 returnees from Mozambique and South Africa who had evaded quarantine and hid in their homesteads in Mt Darwin, The Herald reports. The 9 have been returned to Madziwa quarantine centre after they were caught by the authorities.
The incidents were confirmed by Mashonaland Central provincial development coordinator Mr Cosmas Chiringa who thanked the villagers for coming forward with such information:
<blockquote>This is an indication that people understand the situation and taking awareness seriously. We continue to encourage the communities to be on the lookout of people who are escaping from quarantine centres or in hiding.
Quarantine is a necessary process for our returning citizens to curb the spread of the disease. There is no need to be afraid or panic, the majority of people who test positive to Covid-19 recover.</blockquote>
The governmental urged communities to report returnees to authorities as they risk spreading the disease to other community members. The government is also naming any returnees who escape from quarantine facilities.

Mt Darwin Villagers Report 9 Returnees Who Escaped Quarantine To The Authorities

A former ZBC Newscaster Musorowegomo Mukosi has been arrested on allegations that he hired men to assault his employees at a mine in Mt Darwin, The Herald reports.
Musorowegomo is said to have first accused his employees of stealing his gold before hiring bouncers to assault them.
The incident was confirmed by ZRP National Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi who said:
<blockquote>We can confirm that Musorowegomo Mukosi has been arrested over violence incident which occurred at his mine claim in Mt Darwin over the weekend.
We are still investigating the case. So far we have received three reports of assault. We are however still in the process of verifying those that were attacked and injured as part of the ongoing investigations</blockquote>

Musorowegomo Mukosi Arrested

President Mnangagwa has ordered the minister of Commerce to remove a company from being a mining company to a manufacturing company category. He said that the company was mistakenly entered into the mining category which has seen it exposed to taxes and penalties that it is not supposed to pay.
He was speaking yesterday after touring Southern Granites (PVT) Ltd in Chitungwiza which is into the processing of granite. The president said:
<blockquote>This is a factory, a manufacturing plant not a mining entity at all. But it is classified as a mining entity and then the penalties and taxes are different. We should promote beneficiation. I have directed the minister (Minister Ndlovu) that he must remove this company from being a mining company to what it is, which is a manufacturing company.</blockquote>
The President also called on companies involved in the extraction of granite to carry out their operations in an environmentally friendly manner and empower local communities. Granite is mainly extracted in Mutoko and Mt Darwin.
