A trainee police officer, Vengai Chikurungeni, was discharged from the job after he was deemed unfit for policing duties for stammering.
The ex-constable has since approached the courts to appeal against Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) senior officials, and the appeal was squashed by the High Court for approaching the court late.
Chikurungeni, who was attached at Morris Depot, took police Commissioner-General <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Godwin_Matanga">Godwin Matanga</a> and the Police Service Commission to court challenging unfair dismissal.
<h2>What happened:</h2>
Chikurungeni was undergoing training at Morris Depot.
In September 2021, he was called by Inspector Gwaka who told him that he was not fit to be a police officer since he was a stammerer.
In October 2021, he was called by the Depot Commandant who asked if he was a stammer, and he confirmed that.
In December 2021, he was summoned by Dr Nyakudya who said that he wanted to examine if his condition would allow him to remain in the police service.
He was duly examined and told results will be communicated later.
On January 31 2022, Chikurungeni was called by Inspector Gwaka who gave him a letter of termination of employment which was “backdated or dated” 28th December 2021 and was asked to sign it.
He complied but later decided to challenge his employer’s decision to discharge him under the stated circumstances.
His employer opposed the application and said he was supposed to file his appeal within eight weeks from the day of his dismissal and did not seek condonation.
Chikurungeni denied that he was discharged in December 2021 and claimed that he was asked to sign a backdated document but could not provide proof.
Therefore, the application was dismissed for failure to comply with the Rules and the Chikurungeni was ordered to pay the costs of the suit on the ordinary scale.

Stammering Trainee Police Officer Approaches Courts Challenging Unfair Dismissal

Five police recruits are set to be expelled from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), for violating police Standing Orders, after they were found to be pregnant during their training.
The police trainees are Recruit Constables Mambwe Peace, Mzumala Grace, Nzvege Ashwny, Jachi Gina, and Kutesera Delyn Fungisai. They were undergoing training at Morris Depot in Harare. Part of the police internal codes read:

Should a married or unmarried policewoman fall pregnant, she can apply for maternity leave in terms of the police ‘leave’ regulations.
Police woman who falls pregnant under recruit training will be discharged from the force.
</blockquote>
The ZRP conducted routine tests using urine samples on 162 female recruits on 30 and 31 August this year and 5 tested positive.
To confirm their pregnancy status, it was recommended they undergo an Ultrasound scan on September 5 and they tested positive.
The pregnancy status of the five was as follows: Mzumala Grace (5 weeks, 2 days old); Nzvege Ashwny (15 weeks and 3 days), Jachi Gina (14 weeks, 2 days), Kutesera Delyn Fungisai (11 weeks 6 days old) while Mambwe Peace, an incomplete miscarriage was noted.
The five were recruited into the Zimbabwe Republic Police and posted to ZRP Morris Training Depot for initial training in 2021.

Five Police Recruits Face Dismissal After Falling Pregnant During Training

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission is reportedly investigating whether Harare businessman, Tonny Sarpo, conducted his community service or not after the police reportedly issued two contradicting reports over the matter.
The Herald reports that Sarpo had been given the community service as an alternative to imprisonment for vehicle theft.
The police alleged in the first report that Sarpo had not reported for community service, while the second report said he had reported, but giving some work dates that fell on weekends. 
Sarpo was supposed to perform his community service at Morris Depot but when monitoring officers from the Department of Community Service visited the Depot in January, they were told that Sarpo had never performed community service since his sentence in December last year.
The Harare Magistrates’ Court issued a warrant of arrest against Sarpo following a letter by the director of community service in the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Ms Loice Majonga. 

In response to the warrant, police said that Sarpo was performing community service at the depot workshop and submitted signed roster sheets which showed that Sarpo performed unpaid work even on weekends against court directive for him to perform the service during week days.
