Econet Wireless Zimbabwe is set increases voice, Data, and SMS tariffs and bundle prices with effect from 20 April 2023.
Econet, which is by far the country’s largest mobile network operator (MNO) by subscriber base, has notified its customers about the impending tariff adjustment.
A notice published on the company’s social media pages this Wednesday reads:

Dear Customer, This serves to notify you of the planned changes on our Voice, Data, and SMS Tariffs and Bundles Prices effective Thursday, 20 April 2023.
To access Voice and Data bundles, dial *143#
To Access SMS bundles, dial *140#
</blockquote>
This comes after the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (POTRAZ) approved tariff increases in February and April.
State-owned mobile network operator NetOne increased tariffs on 7 April 2023.
Telecommunications companies in Zimbabwe face various challenges that affect their operations and profitability.
These include a complex and often unpredictable regulatory environment, high inflation rates, currency fluctuations, shortages of foreign currency, frequent power outages, and fraud and cybercrime which has led to financial losses.

Econet Announces Planned Tariffs Hike

At a regional meeting for the Communications Regulators Association of Southern Africa (CRASA) which is being held in Harare, Zimbabwe, the regional body said that it is considering introducing standard mobile data tariffs.
This means that Zimbabwe and other countries in SADC could soon be setting mobile data tariffs in line with regional guidelines following plans by a regional telecoms body to enforce universal data tariffs across the region by 2019. A uniform mobile data pricing framework will involve the regulatory persuasion of mobile operators to set tariffs which strike a balance between consumers’ access of the internet and managing the service providers’ viability.

Zimbabwe & other SADC countries set to adhere to standard mobile data tariffs by 2019

In a press statement released on its website, the <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Postal_and_Telecommunications_Regulatory_Authority_of_Zimbabwe">Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe </a>has responded to questions on why it increased mobile data tariffs among other questions.
Responding to questions on mobile data the regulating authority said:
<blockquote>Q3. Does setting a floor price not stifle innovation in the telecommunications sector and put the burden of reduced revenue on the consumer by making them pay more for data services?
A3. One of POTRAZ’s mandates is to promote innovation. Therefore, the Authority has a duty to capacitate innovation drives in line with global technological developments by creating an enabling environment for the sector to provide innovative services, failure of which there would be no innovation to talk about.
Q4. Some members of the public have complained that the new floor prices make data specifically more expensive for example a 250mb daily bundle from Econet would essentially be priced at $5 and NetOne’s One Fusion package is likely to become more expensive. Why then would POTRAZ opt for tariffs that will make data more expensive for the consumer particularly in the prevailing economic climate?
A4. POTRAZ’s aim is to keep is the price of data as low as possible while ensuring sustainability of the sector and protection of consumers. The Authority’s intention in setting floor prices is, therefore, to maintain a delicate balance between service affordability by consumers and operator viability.
Q5. Last year in October, there were reports that POTRAZ intended to reduce the data tariff but now the opposite seems to be the case. How does POTRAZ reconcile the intention to reduce data tariffs, the third most expensive in Africa with these new floor prices?
A5. The Authority is currently carrying out studies to review the cost models used in tariff setting which were designed in 2014 to ensure fair pricing. The results of the study will guide any tariff changes.</blockquote>
