Professor Ngwabi Bhebhe, the founding Vice Chancellor of Midlands State University (MSU), has died at the age of 81. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared him a national hero.
Prof Bhebhe was a highly respected academic who received numerous awards and honours for his contributions to the field of history. He served as the Vice Chancellor of MSU from 1999 to 2014 and played a crucial role in its growth and development into a diverse institution. President Mnangagwa, along with the late Vice-President Simon Muzenda and national heroes Richard Hove and Cephas Msipa, were part of the committee that established MSU.
Prof Bhebhe was actively involved in various academic and professional associations and authored several books and articles on Zimbabwean and African history. The president responded to the news of Bhebhe’s death:

The news of the passing on of Professor Ngwabi Bhebhe today left me devastated. An academic of international renown, and a founding, long-time Vice Chancellor of Midlands State University, MSU, the late Professor Bhebhe was an outstanding teacher and scholar through whom successive generations of historians passed, all to subsequently make great names for themselves in their own right, and at various institutions in our Sadc region and the World at large. 
“I worked very closely with Professor Bhebhe at every stage from the inception to the development of Midlands State University as a full-fledged, multi-departmental institution which grew steeped in the national ethos. Together, we transformed MSU from being a pre-eminently academic-orientated institution as was the tradition then, to being research-led and solution-driven. Today, thanks to the late Professor Bhebhe, MSU is right in the forefront of transforming higher education into a catalyst for National Development, by generating durably-tested solutions in line with our Vision 2030. We forever will be indebted to him for this outstanding Vision which was always tempered by a bend towards the urgent practicalities of our nation.

President Mnangagwa said Professor Bhebhe’s research projects and publications helped redefine and rebuild the nation’s collective identity. He specifically mentioned Professor Bhebhe’s leadership in compiling the Zimbabwean chapter on the history of the African Liberation Struggle, which is considered an essential read for citizens of the continent. The President also acknowledged Professor Bhebhe’s research on national icons such as Benjamin Burombo and the late Dr Simon V Muzenda, as well as his work on the Ndebele State and the role of the Presbyterian Mission in the Midlands Province during colonial times. President Mnangagwa expressed his condolences to the Bhebhe family and the nation, and announced that Professor Bhebhe would be conferred with national hero status.

MSU Founding Vice Chancellor Professor Ngwabi Bhebhe Dies, Declared National Hero

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Great_Zimbabwe_University">Great Zimbabwe University (GZU)</a> has lost 50 members of staff through a brain drain since January this year.
GZU vice-chancellor <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Rungano_Zvobgo">Rungano Zvobgo</a> said the mass staff exodus was affecting the successful implementation of the Education 5.0 policy, NewsDay reported. Zvobgo said at the institution’s graduation ceremony recently:

This year alone, we lost 50 members of staff through resignations, five of them were PhD holders. This has negatively impacted our critical mass of specialised human resources.
</blockquote>
The trend is said to be common amongst state institutions as educators, and non-academic staff, are leaving the country in search of greener pastures.
The president of the Association of University Teachers of UZ, Zvakanyorwa Wilbert Sadomba and secretary-general Rekopantswe Mate wrote to UZ vice-chancellor Paul Mapfumo in July complaining over poor salaries and working conditions. The union leaders said in a memo:

Your non-consultative and non-participatory approach to administration has caused an unprecedented decline in morale leading to an exodus of experts in vital fields such as medicine.
</blockquote>
College Lecturers Association of Zimbabwe president David Dzatsunga said lecturers at State institutions have turned destitute. Dzatsunga said:

Quite a number of lecturers are leaving for the diaspora especially because of the low salaries and poor conditions of service incomparable with counterparts in the region and internationally.
</blockquote>
Workers in state-owned higher learning institutions are among several groups of workers who have periodically embarked on industrial action in recent years.

Great Zimbabwe University Lecturers Resign En Masse

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Midlands_State_University">Midlands State University (MSU</a>) has reportedly approved a 407% tuition fee increase amid reports that many students are already struggling to make ends meet.
In a notice seen by Pindula News, the higher learning institution informed students about the upward review of the fees.
The notice signed by Doctor K. Mudzingwa shows that undergraduate students will pay between ZW$285 000 (US$453) to ZW$359 212, with Medicine and Engineering degrees being the most expensive.
Converted to foreign currency equivalency based on the official exchange rate, the new fee structure ranges between US$453 and US$571 per semester.
The hike is significant considering most degrees were averaging ZW$50 000 last semester.
Postgraduate students, who were initially paying about ZW$81 000 last semester, will now pay between ZW$318 472 and ZW$573 360 up to the Masters’ level with some doctoral students paying ZW$1 million.
At least 50% of the fees are expected to have been paid by the close of registration on November 4, 2022, with the remainder expected by November 25, 2022.
Other institutions like the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) urged students to pay just 10% of the fees to register for classes.

MSU Hikes Tuition Fee By More Than 400%

The government says fees at local tertiary institutions were lower compared to their regional counterparts, despite the <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/state-universities-raise-fees-uz-introduces-discounts/">recent tuition fee hike by over 450%.</a>
Leader of government business in Parliament and Justice Minister, Ziyambi Ziyambi, Wednesday told legislators that the hike was justifiable considering that tertiary education fees had not been increased for almost two years when inflation was rising.
Ziyambi was responding to Magwegwe MP, Anele Ndebele who had raised concern about the increase of tuition fees by institutions, about a fortnight ago.
Ndebele asked:
<blockquote>
State university fees have gone up 450% with the ministry’s approval, which is really insensitive. I want to check with the leader of government business if there is a deliberate policy thrust by our government to cushion the majority poor, who cannot afford to finance higher education because it must not be a preserve for the rich?
</blockquote>
In response, Ziyambi said:
<blockquote>
 State university fees have not been increased for over one and half years. Honourable Members are quite alive that a lot has happened within that particular period.
If you compare when the fees were pegged at the current structure that has been reviewed and the cost of living that was there including salaries, you will realise that there was a need for a review to be done.
When you compare the fees with what is obtaining in the region, we are the cheapest. Be that as it may, our State universities have come up with programmes to ensure that our students are cushioned in terms of having payment plans, access to loans and other support services that can be given.
</blockquote>
When President Mnangagwa made similar remarks about a fortnight ago, critics said the government must not compare fees with those of institutions in the region considering that there is a huge variance between salaries of local workers compared to their colleagues in the region.

Midlands State University (MSU) has cancelled the 22nd graduation ceremony that was scheduled for next Friday citing the spike in new coronavirus infections recently.
MSU registrar Tinashe Zishiri said graduands who had already paid graduation fees should keep their receipts for use in the collection of graduation regalia and invitation cards once a new date has been set. Said Zishiri in a statement:
<blockquote>_MSU wishes to advise its valued stakeholders that due to circumstances beyond our control, the 22nd graduation ceremony that was scheduled for Friday, July 16, 2021, has been postponed to a date to be advised._</blockquote>
Zishiri also urged graduands who are yet to pay graduation fees to do so to avoid inconveniences once the new date is announced.
The announcement is made a week after the tertiary institution ast week, MSU had suspended face-to-face lectures after close to 100 students tested positive for COVID-19 at its Zvishavane campus.

MSU had to close its Gweru and Zvishavane campuses following the incident.
Last Friday, the government also suspended contact lessons at all tertiary institutions following a surge in coronavirus cases.

MSU Has Cancelled Graduation Ceremony

54 Midlands State University (MSU) students at Zvishavane Campus tested positive for coronavirus, Acting Midlands provincial medical director Dr Reginald Mhene has confirmed.
University authorities have since suspended face to face lectures at both the Main Campus in Gweru and the Zvishavane Campus.
A number of students at the Main Campus are reported to have also tested positive to COVID-19 but Mhene could not say how many were affected.
In a notice, MSU registrar Mr Tinashe Zishiri said face to face lectures at the campuses have been suspended with effect from 30 June until the situation improves.
The university will now conduct online classes until the situation improves. Said Zishiri:
<blockquote>Midlands State University wishes to advise all its valued stakeholders that the University has resolved to suspend face to face lectures at the Gweru Main Campus and Zvishavane Campus from Wednesday, June 30, 2021, until further notice.
This is part of preventive measures and coordinated efforts being taken to mitigate the spread of coronavirus.</blockquote>
Zishiri said online classes will continue as scheduled adding that the university will also continue to offer electronic library services.

54 MSU Students Test Positive For Coronavirus

The Midlands State University (MSU) has backtracked on plans to construct a medical school at the corner of Harare Road and Cecil Avenue next to Glengarry suburb in Bulawayo.
MSU had earlier this year made an application to the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) requesting land to establish the third medical school in the country.
A recent council report notes that the university has since backtracked and instead said it will just be establishing a university campus not the initial medical school. Read the report:
<blockquote>“The director of housing and community services (Mr Dictor Khumalo) reported that council on 4 March 2020 had resolved to sell Stand Number 19828 BT, as depicted on TPB 823 measuring 3.45 hectares in extent to Midlands State University for the establishment of a Medical school and ancillary use only at a selling price of $1 987 500 plus an additional sum of $288 187.50 being 14.5 percent value added tax. The purchase price had been paid in full.
The applicant later on had advised the department that their wish was to construct a University campus and not a Medical school as previously reported. The engineering services department had no town planning objections to the change of use from a Medical school to a University campus as it fell under the same use group as a Medical school.</blockquote>
MSU would become the fourth university to have a campus in Bulawayo others being the National University of Science and Technology, Lupane State University and the Catholic University of Zimbabwe.

MSU Backtracks On Bulawayo Medical School Project

A student at the Midlands State University has appeared before Masvingo Magistrate accused of stealing a bucket of paint worth $500 from his uncle.
The student, Rukudzo Tarupiwa who is 25-year-old and from Masvingo was recently sentenced to perform 70 hours community service.
Magistrate Conceptor Ngwerume sentenced the accused to four months imprisonment but conditionally suspended two months for five years and the remainder on condition he performs 70 hours of unpaid work at Rujeko Primary School.
It is reported that police officers on patrol spotted Tarupiwa selling the acrylic PVA white wall paint for a song on March 4 around 11pm and at Exormart Complex. The police got suspicious and arrested him.

The police then investigated the matter and discovered that the student had stolen the paint from his uncle, Victor Mafuku, who kept it in his room.
Crime rates have been increasing in the country with some noble people caught doing things society does not expect them to be doing.
For instance, a Science teacher was caught stealing green mealies, an act that degrades the teaching profession.
Some attribute the rise in crime to the deteriorating state of affairs. There is a highunemployment rate and those who work are complaining about the erosion of their salaries.

The Midlands State Univesity has released its proposed fees for students on Block programmes.
The development comes when the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Professor Murwira has announced that Universities must not raise fees without the approval of the government.

This was revealed by students representative council president Gift Sibanda, who said the bus will help cushion students from exorbitant transport fares. Said Sibanda:
When we were campaigning, we promised to stand with students in all the problems faced and we are hoping to tackle every problem despite the economic challenges. Students should, however, be patient as the institution is not spared of the economic challenges.
Commuter omnibuses reportedly charge ZWL$ $3 to 4 for the short distance from the city to senga. The fares go up after 7 pm making life difficult for the students.
