Kenya national football team coach Engin Firat has heaped praise on the Warriors and tipped the Zimbabwe national football team to do well at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
Zimbabwe secured their spot in the finals with a game to spare, following an entertaining 1-1 draw against Firat’s side in South Africa on Friday.
Firat believes that the Warriors, who are under the tutelage of Michael Nees, a German coach, are in capable hands. He said:

Your coach is doing a really clever thing. He knows that Zimbabwe has a good defence and therefore he plays deep and goes for transition.
He has brought back Khama Billiat and now has a real playmaker who can keep the ball.
The team is now very competitive. If I look around they have players playing for good clubs in big leagues. This is a really strong team.
Even in our group Namibia has one point but in the World Cup qualifiers, they are second in their group.
So this group was very rough. This is the reality, Zimbabwe are going to the AFCON, and they have had really good results.
The football needed in Africa is fast transition and a very strong defence. I am sure Zimbabwe have a really good chance of going out of the groups something they have not achieved before. I think they have a very good chance this time.

Zimbabwe has never advanced beyond the group stage at the AFCON finals. Sunday Chidzambga (twice), Charles Mhlauri, Kalisto Pasuwa and Norman Mapeza all failed to lead the Warriors into the knockout stages at AFCON.
Nees became the second foreign coach to lead the Warriors to AFCON qualification, following in the footsteps of Croatian Zdravko Logarusic, who achieved the same feat in 2021.

Warriors coach Michael Nees believes that Simba Bhora striker Tymon Machope will add a new dimension to the team’s attack in the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Kenya and Cameroon.
Machope is a fresh addition to Nees’ squad, having earned his spot due to his impressive performance in recent weeks.
With 12 goals this season, he played a key role in helping Simba Bhora achieve a historic milestone by winning the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) for the first time.

However, Zimbabwean football commentators suspect that this decision is part of a strategy by the Brave Warriors to disadvantage Zimbabwe, which has many citizens residing in Johannesburg, South Africa.

CAPS United coach Lloyd Chitembwe has castigated Warriors coach Michael Nees and the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) after being barred from using his captain, Godknows Murwira, in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match against Dynamos at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday.
Both Murwira and Dynamos vice-captain Emmanuel Jalai were among the few locally-based players called up by Nees for the upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Namibia, scheduled for October 10 and 14. 
Neither player participated in the Harare Derby, which CAPS United won 2-1.
In an ironic twist, Dynamos goalkeeper Martin Mapisa, who is also part of the Warriors squad, was permitted to play in the match.
Chitembwe criticised the inconsistency, pointing out that players from around the world who were called up for international duty were allowed to compete for their clubs on Sunday. Said Chitembwe (via <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/chitembwe-blasts-nees-zifa/">The Herald</a>):

I don’t mind what people think of what I say but I’m extremely disappointed with what happened with Godknows.
He is our important player he is our captain and for that matter, we need him in important matches.

Look (Cameroon goalkeeper) Andre Onana; they are also participating in the same competition that Zimbabwe are participating but he played today (yesterday) for his club (Manchester United against Aston Villa).
Khama Billiat played yesterday (on Saturday). Jordan Zemura played; they all played. But someone thinks he wants to change the way we think and this is not the first time our national team has participated in these competitions.
What irks me most is the fact that, when coach Jairos Tapera was in charge, the PSL refused to release the players and they had the right to do that because it was within the rules.
People now tend to listen to an expat coach more than they listen to a fellow Africans. We don’t need those things in our football.
We don’t want someone who comes in and thinks he is a big elephant in the room.
What is more embarrassing is the fact that they went on to threaten players, that if you don’t listen to this call up then we will not consider you for future assignments. What is that?
This is clowning and people are grandstanding and it’s just unfortunate.

Chitembwe Slams Nees, ZIFA Over Murwira's Unavailability For Harare Derby

Warriors coach Michael Nees has said England-based forward Tawanda Chirewa will not face any punishment for expressing his frustration about being substituted during Zimbabwe’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Kenya in Uganda last month.
The 20-year-old, currently on loan at Derby County from Wolverhampton Wanderers, was unhappy with the coach’s decision to take him off in the 58th minute.
Chirewa was so upset that he declined to speak to the media before the subsequent match against Cameroon.
In that game, he did not start and only came on as a substitute in the 86th minute for Walter Musona.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/nees-speaks-out-on-chirewa/">Zimpapers Sports Hub</a>, Nees revealed that Chirewa has apologised twice for the incident, and the matter is now resolved. Said Nees:

(What happened) is a normal thing in football, although It’s not a good thing.
There are no ill feelings from my side and the boy mustn’t be worried about being punished whatsoever. I am not a dictator.
There will always be hiccups in team development. The only thing is that this cannot happen always and the players need to understand why it should not happen.
The good thing is that he (Chirewa) apologised two times, what else must he do now? That’s more than enough, it’s now over.
He was angry because he was substituted, he was very angry with himself maybe.
And everybody expresses emotions differently, but that is over.

Chirewa has started only once in Derby County’s seven league matches since joining the club on a temporary deal in August.
Nees also clarified the reasons for benching Chirewa during the goalless draw against Cameroon on September 10. He said:

Tawanda is a very talented player, but look at how much game time he had in the last two, or three months.
So, for him to start the game against Kenya and then play about 60 minutes in an international match was in itself an achievement and a sign of trust from the technical team.
But against Cameroon, we needed to have a different approach, because it was a different team, and I thought, we needed a little bit more physical presence.
That’s why another player (Douglas Mapfumo) came in and it proved to be good. It was not like a punishment for Chirewa.

Nees compared Chirewa’s situation to a 1970s incident in German football involving player Gunter Netzer, who, after starting the 1973 DFB Cup final on the bench, substituted himself into the match during extra time and scored the winning goal.
Nees said both the coach and the player faced no issues from this occurrence, adding that such events are not uncommon in football.

The coach said Tawanda Chirewa won't be punished for being upset when substituted during a game. Chirewa apologized and the matter is resolved. It's normal to feel this way in football. The coach benched him in another game for a different strategy, not as punishment. Chirewa is a talented player who needs more game time. It's like a story from the past when a player subbed himself and scored a winning goal. Both coach and player are okay with what happened. A club coach always has a lot of time; they have six weeks of pre-season; they have this and that. But when you work in association football with federations there is always a lack of time and time pressure. So, I have to make use of every minute available.
I have developed my strategies, and my training. It starts even in the training. When you have a team for six weeks together, yes you can do whatever you can, but when you have only three or four sessions before the game you must probably think what can we do which is related to our formation?
I think I had to learn the hard way because I have always been under time pressure because I have worked more in association football, and not so much in club football.
I am very confident that I can say that I can use time very efficiently. But of course, we are also a brand-new team.
The staff and the players don’t know me so we must get the message very quickly over to them and that is not easy.’

The German tactician also warned Warriors fans against setting unrealistic targets or demanding quick results. He said:

We are under a lot of time pressure. The ideal case would be we go into camp tomorrow with the local team until departure and then I will have a week to assess the players.

Nees said he will not select players who are not currently affiliated with a club, arguing that match fitness and regular team training are essential requirements for players to be considered.
ZIFA revealed that its technical committee was still finalising the candidates to assist Nees.
Reports suggest a technical committee chaired by former Highlanders chief executive Nhlanhla Dube had shortlisted four names, from which Nees can select his assistants in the coming days.
Nees, who agreed to work with local personnel as part of his contract, was clear on the desired calibre of assistants he wanted to have. He said:

On July 30, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Normalisation Committee announced the appointment of the 57-year-old German tactician as the new head coach of the Zimbabwe Men’s National Team.
Nees will be tasked with leading the Warriors in the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He is the first substantive Warriors coach since Croatian national Zdravko Logarusic was fired a couple of years ago.
While Nees’ resume may not include major achievements in Africa, Warriors “number one” supporter Chris “Romario” Musekiwa believes the best fans can do is get behind the new coach. Said Musekiwa:
