Twitter is considering suing Meta over its new application Threads, which is linked to Instagram but works as a standalone app.
Threads, which is similar to Twitter, was launched on Wednesday, and by Thursday, more than 30 million people had signed up for the new app, according to Meta.
Meta Platforms, formerly named Facebook, is an American multinational technology company that owns and operates Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp, among other products and services.
Twitter’s Elon Musk said “competition is fine, cheating is not” – but Meta denied claims that former Twitter employees helped create Threads.
According to BBC News technology reporter James Clayton, the look and feel of Threads are similar to those of Twitter, adding that the news feed and the reposting were “incredibly familiar”.
BBC reported that US copyright law does not protect ideas, so for Twitter to be successful in court it would have to prove that its own intellectual property, such as programming code, was taken.
Twitter attorney Alex Spiro sent a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday accusing Meta of “systematic, wilful, and unlawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property” to create Threads.
He further alleged that Meta had hired dozens of former Twitter employees who “had and continue to have access to Twitter’s trade secrets and other highly confidential information” that helped Meta develop the Threads app. Part of the letter reads:

Twitter intends to strictly enforce its intellectual property rights, and demands that Meta take immediate steps to stop using any Twitter trade secrets or other highly confidential information.
Twitter reserves all rights, including, but not limited to, the right to seek both civil remedies and injunctive relief without further notice.

However, posting on Threads, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said “no one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee – that’s just not a thing”.

Twitter Threatens Legal Action Over Meta's New Threads Application

Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has sacked over 11 000 employees and is set to extend the hiring freeze.
Meta had overextended, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/nov/09/why-mark-zuckerberg-announce-11000-job-cuts-meta">The Guardian</a> reported citing Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
Like many of its competitors, Meta believed the rise in online activity during the coronavirus pandemic was a permanent shift which could continue even yonder the lockdowns.
As Meta’s revenue surged during the lockdowns, the company invested accordingly. 
However, Meta’s revenues contracted, leaving the company, with almost 90 000 employees, financially exposed.
Zuckerberg also said wider “macroeconomic downturn” hammered all tech stocks equally, as profit today started to look tastier than growth tomorrow in the eyes of investors facing the end of the western world’s zero interest rate policy. 
He also said there has been “Increased competition,” which hurt further, as did “ads signal loss”.
Although Zuckerberg did not name Facebook’s rivals, it is believed he was referring to competition from TikTok, a trendy app stealing users and dominating the zeitgeist and a change of policy at Apple. 
In 2021, Apple limited the amount of data, or “signals”, Facebook could gather about the behaviour of iPhone users, which made it harder for small businesses to use Facebook adverts to profitably acquire new customers.
In 2021 alone, Meta spent more than $12bn (£10bn) on research and design (R&amp;D) at its Reality Labs metaverse wing and brought in barely a sixth of that in the few metaverse products it actually makes revenue from.
 Those losses are growing: in 2019 Reality Labs lost $4.5bn with $500m in revenue, and in 2020 $6.6bn with $1.1bn in revenue. In an earnings call in February, Zuckerberg said he expected the losses to “increase meaningfully” over 2022.
Shareholders panicked. Brad Gerstner, the founder of Altimeter Capital, and a long-term shareholder in the company wrote an open letter to Zuckerberg in October, calling on him to radically scale back. 
If Gerstner’s estimate is even remotely accurate, Meta could pay every single employee who is losing their job a $9m severance fee, and still spend less than it is expected to invest in building out the metaverse business.

Facebook's Parent Company Meta Has Sacked Over 11 000 Employees

WhatsApp, the popular instant communication app owned by Meta that is used by many for quick texting is down. 
WhatsApp users in some parts of the world, including Zimbabwe, are currently unable to send and receive messages.
It currently seems impossible to send a message on WhatsApp groups, but personal chats also seem to be largely affected.
Outage detection website DownDetector confirms that WhatsApp is not working for thousands of users. 
WhatsApp Web also appears to be affected by the outage, and we can confirm that the app’s web client is simply not connecting anymore. 
WhatsApp Web is also not working, as people continue to wait for a fix for the outage.
WhatsApp is yet to share an official statement on the matter.

WhatsApp Is Down For Thousands Of Users

WhatsApp group admins will now be able to delete messages by group members from the group.
Meta, the company behind WhatsApp made an announcement of several improvements to groups in the app. The changes, the company said “are rolling out in the coming weeks.”
Here is the list of improvements to WhatsApp:

Meta made the WhatsApp Groups improvements announcement as part of a larger announcement of a new type of group called “Communities”.
Communities can be understood as a group of groups. Admins will be able to group, say, 24 groups together in a community and be able to send announcements messages to all those groups at once. WhatsApp Group Admins Can Now Delete Member Messages

WhatsApp today announced that it has launched a new type of group called Communities. 
According to the company, Communities on WhatsApp will enable people to bring together separate groups under one umbrella. A community is therefore a ‘group of groups’.
Screenshots of the new feature from Meta show that a single Community could have as many as 24 groups inside it. Assuming each group would have 256 members, that would mean a community can contain at least 6,000 members.
Said the company:

Communities on WhatsApp will enable people to bring together separate groups under one umbrella with a structure that works for them. That way people can receive updates sent to the entire Community and easily organize smaller discussion groups on what matters to them. Communities will also contain powerful new tools for admins, including announcement messages that are sent to everyone and control over which groups can be included.

Meta said the Communities feature is targeted at organizations like schools, local clubs, and non-profit organisations who “now rely on WhatsApp to communicate securely and get things done.”
There was no mention of Buy &amp; Sell groups which are a typical use in Zimbabwe and other markets.
The WhatsApp group size limit has for long been a complaint and this in some way could be a solution to that.
Other chat apps already have much larger group size limits. Telegram, the main competitor to WhatsApp for example, has a group size limit of 200,000 members.
Meta, the company behind WhatsApp, said the new features will be rolling out gradually and are not available to everyone immediately.
